Starting my apprenticeship tomorrow. Thank you ladies! I’ve been a cable tech for the past few years and it was definitely a boys game. But I always let my work speak for me and earned their respect.

If it wasn't for my slightly bigger hips, no one would have known I was a female in the trades(carpentry) in the mid-80's. "Reject women"....BITE ME. I was a carpenter first and a woman last. I was always told to slow down cause I was making the guys look bad. I NEVER needed nor asked for special consideration even working when I was pregnant because I HAD to. No special treatment here! It made me who I am today and helped me find out how tough I was. Raised 6 kids alone after my husband died. Not every job is made for everyone...male or female and it takes certain types of people to do certain things. I've known a lot of men who could never have handled the work of being a carpenter. It's just about who you are and how badly you want to do something.
Porta potties never bothered me (some great graffiti in there) and there were times we only had a corner to pee in!
On shit, never thought about the porta pottie aspect. Literally could never. Those things are disgusting. I’d rather cop a squat outside .

I've been considering a career in the trades for a few months now, leaning towards carpentry, and this was super inspiring. Thank you to all the women who've come before me - you make me believe this is possible for me personally, and not just a pipe dream!! (Also, thanks to Dan & Sue Schultz for some great directing/video editing, and everyone else who worked behind the scenes - as a former graphic designer, I super appreciate the quality of this video)

Illegals make $46.77 an hr. as Union carpenters in Chicago & I'm not referring to DACA ppl. That is almost $100k a yr. add up to $30k with overtime. Illegals work in all Union trades! The Unions love it because the illegals can't collect the Pensions & the Companies don't care. That is why E-verify & ICE audits are necessary. Some people actually lend out their personal information for a fee. A guy once tried using a woman's name. We Americans must regularly compete with these illegals because the Unions want them & the Companies don't care. On non-union jobs, General Contractors hire a Subcontractor who is legal, then he hires Illegals!!! Combined we are talking millions of jobs. As for the money they make, most is sent back to Mexico.
This is my dream job. I've had my application approved and now I'm waiting to find out when my pre-apprenticeship starts. I cant wait.

I love these women so much. They are the back bone of this country. I can't praise them enough. God bless everyone of them. Mothers, Carpenters and Craft Women are the best. I observed their hard work and ability to work around some men who tried to get them fired because they are women. These women are smart and intelligent people. Love em all.

I'm hoping to start an apprenticeship in carpentry at 27 years old! I've worked in retail, hospitality, community and had an office job at one point too. I haven't found any of them very satisfying but when I think about building and fixing things, that gets me excited! Thank you all the ladies who shared their stories in this video. I'm feeling motivated and inspired!
I started at 25/26 best decision I've made! I went into the electrical trade. But you can't go wrong is you go union!

I'm really drawn to carpentry because I'm the happiest when I'm outside, when I have clear goal with whatever I'm doing, when I'm making something look nice, when I feel productive and useful. I'm 24 and want to go to school for something, because everything I thought I wanted to do I no longer want (pursuing art/creative hobbies). But I'm scared of carpentry because of the risk of injuries... I know that's a dumb reason to not give it a chance.. but i know there's some good odds of getting real hurt in this field :/

I did construction for 35 years. I built numerous house and a lot of barns for dairy and poultry. I did lots of form work. I only ever had one female carpenter for about 5 years. She had good skills, great work ethic, fit in great, could climb like squirrel and was a very good worker. She was great on house construction, she found the barn stuff tougher as everything you touch is heavier. A 60 ft truss is a different matter than a 30 ft truss. 30 ft up is different that 15 ft up (although she could climb) However she NEVER quit. I used to tell her sometimes don't kill yourself here. No quit in her at all...I suppose she felt she had to prove herself every day. Stave silos were tough for her ...she could climb and had no fear of heights but was really not quite strong enough for heavy materials at height, Great young woman and a dandy employee. She gravitated to finish after a while and did great. On top of it all she was fun to have around...she could take it and give it right back. All the crew respected her. Electrician is a great trade for women. Lighter work but still very skill and neatness oriented. Guys I know in heavy construction LOVE female excavator operators. They are diligent, careful and do not beat up the gear.
Carpentry is such a great occupation, can't wait to call myself a carpenter in August when I'm finally out of school and become a carpenter apprentice. In about 2 and a half years, if it all goes well, I'll be a licenced female carpenter. Can't wait.

I’m a woman in the trades. I joined the trades right out of high school and It’s been nothing but hell. Covid screwed up my apprenticeship program. My first crew I worked with was sexist and told me I’ll never be as strong as a man. Ran into health issues that has screwed up many opportunities. Now I struggle to find work. I even had a guy tell me “I didn’t know you were a girl, I don’t want to hire you, I want to hire a big strong man.”
This is what I am worried about. I am considering carpentry but I’m afraid I will experience sexism.
Just have a little faith and keep searching for opportunities. I'm just 5'6, with a smaller frame and I joined a great crew of guys who took me on for a demo project at a University science hall. I was the only female and it was heavy demo work: cinder blocks, steel security doors, piping, hvac teardown...all wheelbarrow'd or carted out of the building. Hard work but breakfast on the house and breaks every two hours, it was a great experience. There are unions/companies out there that will happily except a female on their team.

Was looking for a career change. 25 year old female.. so my choices were either college, trade school, or military.
I think I'll try for an apprenticeship with a union.
Women comprise of 50% of the population, yet only 2-15% of workers in construction. I’m so glad my company Soulful Design and Builds is changing that by being the only, largest all-minority women construction company in all of the US and probably the world.

Hard work feels good! That's right!!! But what makes me upset about this film is how it makes it seem as if OUR labor industry is TOO HARD. It's hard for some PEOPLE- Man or woman.... if you're tough/determined or if you just Really want MONEY then you're tough.!!! Most women can do this type of work and they make it seem like you have to be special or extra hard to work hard. But men can just do it naturally?? I've outworked /outsmarted many men without trying very hard. Women can do this work if they can learn any type of work ethic.( the beauty about union work? They TEACH hard and smart work ethic) We can work hard, just as hard as anyone and on that same token, Women can fuck up just as much as a man. Most importantly we can also work the same... HARD work is HARD WORK there isnt any fucking female stipend(you'll see once you're on a job and you have to pick up 10 11'#5 bars in ONE trip because if you dont pack that much you gotta beat that boy who did back to the pile.... We dont need anything different in the end, but we need it now. we need it in the beginning because we need exposure.
We need the opportunity to be spread to women more often and the SAME standard of tests given to us as the men. I wish more women knew what they were capable of and IGNORED what they were taught by status quo. it's a crime to tell someone they cant do something and an even bigger tragedy for them to believe it.

If your considering a career just remember you have to work at least 8 months out of a year for 5 years to get a pension , or no pension and your always being laid off, I made 3 good years and trying to get to 5 yes to be fully vested has been difficult, they usually don't keep a woman and especially if you're a journeyman. So it's not all chopped up like this is portraying at all. Yes great money but if you work 2 months out of the year it's not a career you can count on. Real talk .

Go get them girls. It is good to see you out there practicing a craft which will continue to pay you well. Back in the 70's and 80's back in New York it was unheard of to see a woman carpenter or plumber or other craft person who was a woman. Men thought that women where capable of working like men did. Now I see women on the worksite doing everything from carpentry to electrical work and making really good money. Good job girls. Once again you have proven that a woman can do anything that a man can do, and in some cases even better. Keep up the good work and laugh your way all the way to the bank.

This is so inspiring. I'm not a tradeswoman but Ive been gardening growing veg for years so I've now got myself an allotment (plot for gardening in the UK) and it's requiring me to learn a lot of new skills to prep it for gardening like building raised beds, fixing the shed and other woodwork projects as well as all the manual digging. I've been feeling v tired doing it and a bit overwhelmed when I go to places like the timber merchants as its out of my comfort zone. I'm single so have to do it all myself and sometimes I feel envious of women who have husbands to do all the woodwork. Seeing these women reminds me I can do it, I just have to pace myself. I'm loving learning the skills.
It's common to see women and young ladies in the building industry here in New Zealand.
I am a roofer in MO and I love this job it’s my favorite job I’ve ever had and all the dudes I work with respect me and I work my ass off and it feels good!
loved this film so much! It is very, very inspiring. I just wonder how union type trades affect family life. I hear stuff that some projects require tradespeople to be away from their families weeks on end.
I am a carpenter myself. I have faced a lot of harassment, death threats, bullying, multiple rape attempts, threats and etc. I reported these to my union president and he said "what did you expect when you got into it". I can't take it anymore. It's been years of subhuman conditions, I just want to die. I the world, it is a lonely and cruel place and I don't see why I would live in it anymore.

we have minds, limbs and muscle for a reason. to be able to be free and decide what we want to do with OUR lives, whatever that is, just like men.
we're not animals and this isn't caveman days anymore, which means our existence shouldn't revolve around breeding like a bunch of rabbits.
Excellent. (I think you made a mistake showing that picture of the Porta potty, it's definitely more fun watching people figure that one out themselves) but there is one thing that is worth adding. The trades have been marginalized as lower paying jobs for people that couldn't hack it in school. Formal education works for some people but not all. Ask yourself a simple question, did the work being shown in this video strike a chord and wake something up in you? If yes give it a try. If it's not your thing then go to college or do whatever else calls you but I would caution about starting with college. Once you get locked in to debt pursuing an interest it turns out you hate, you're kind of screwed. I tell people this way, I would rather have a deed to a house that a Certificate of Smartness. And now to piss people off. If you hate high school, quit. Start working with your hands. An education on the job site is far more valuable for many of us then wasting time on facts, theory and whatever. You will never use algebra unless you teach it and you will never need to know how disected frogs work unless you're going to be a biologist. But but but it's important!!! No it isn't. It's a hobby. Watch videos about it at night after work if it's interesting then go back to supporting yourself and your family. People that disagree with this are the same people that think college is the only way to be a complete person and don't recognize swinging a hammer as an 'education'. It Damn well is.

@@NIRoseI Building structures out of wood. IE: stairs, cabinets, floors, walls, etc.
If you start as an apprentice carpenter under a union, you can get paid working with benefits and going to carpentry school for free.
This is cool in the arab world, women are not allowed to do hard work. Very encouraging though ladies.

It good that women have the choice to work in the construction industry, but in my experience as a carpenter, women produce an equal quality of work but im afraid to say they are at least 20% slower than guys. Its not their fault as its mostly down to physical strength, but if i was hiring, i would worry about time limits a lot more.

2. Every woman working, is a woman not at home, taking care of the home, children and preparing for her husband's arrival home, to care for his every want, needs and desires.

I worked as a carpenter for 35 year's, it takes a very strong man to do most of it. But sure they could build cabinets or fences and light jobs, but not where a mans gods given strength is needed.
Did you not even watch the video? These women were not just building fences and cabinets. Women are not incapable of gaining muscle and being strong.
