Hey Carl, love your videos man, keep it up ;) On a side note, the low E riff at 8:15 I think you are making it way too complex than it is. I find that a simple 0---0-0-0-0-0--0-0-0-0-0--0-0-0-0-0 sounds much closer to the recording. A basic low E followed by repetition of 0-0-0-0-0(12345)
Yeah, I was confused about this all night. He’s got the notes right, but the 8th notes are swung, which gives the pattern you mention. He’s just not swinging them (which results in a totally different, and much more difficult, riff)
True, I was wondering if anyone would mention. Do you know if Hetfield actually downpicks all those 5 strokes? (I do the first down, and the first of the group of five down but then alternate)
@@geompon6505 Nope, I don't think he downpicks that. It wouldn't sound right. On a side note, ppl who don't play guitar or the trolls, like to exaggerate his downpicking. For sure there's a lot of downpicking in Metallica, but almost all fast songs except Master of Puppets include plenty of alternate picking. Battery, Damage inc, Dyer's eve, Fight fire with fire, Whiplash, Metal militia etc etc all include heavy alternate pickings.

I was buffled cause I can clearly hear alternate picking on many riffs (I mean the triples cannot sound better but with alternate) and I even watched a video titled "James Hetfield downpicking" and there was clearly alternate picking (ie on That was just your life). I ve been practicing downpicking for the last 2 years and I ve reached a pretty decent speed (not endurance though) and thinking that I should reach a speed where the triplets had to be downpicked as well was outrageous. I did found a death metal guitarist though (a bodybuilder) that downstrokes up to 290bpm! THough impressive it gets that fast that it s almost indistiguinshable from tremolo picking.
@@geompon6505 Im sure there are nuts out there who can downpick everything, but it just wouldn't sound right. That was just your life is the basic triple with alternate picking. For example I find it atrocious when people alternate pick MoP, but other songs its just natural to alternate pick it, and also they were written like that. Just as MoP sounds bad with alternate picking, That was just your life would sound bad to downpick it imo.
I remember starting my guitar journey with carl on Welcome Home Sanitarium, Its been about 3ish years and I hadnt played my guitar a lot during those times up until about four months ago and I came back harder than ever and Im learning so many new things, I even got my downpicking up to tempo with master of puppets. Thank you Carl, you helped me start and now your helping me keep going. :)

0:11-0:26 I'm having trouble playing this riff. I can play it with the A string solely with the swing rhythm. But when I try to add in that low E string, it just sounds sloppy and harder to keep rhythm. Any tips?
That really fast part after the second chorus 8:33 is basically just the same picking pattern as in Children Of The Grave just playing a lot faster. (Just the palm muting. Obviously the riff itself is different)

So, as I’m envisioning what you’re saying, for it to be easier that way - for me anyway - is for it to be upstroke, downstroke x2. Because, to me anyway, alternating upstroke, downstroke, upstroke seems like it would be harder. I always struggled to play that triplet at full speed using downstroke x3. We’d either slow it down a bit or do a doublet instead of the triplet

im having the same issue too, try not picking and just finger the strings and pick the low e string, then try moving onto picking

One heck of a song to comeback with!
Tip: The riff that starts with a triplet 0-0-0 and then E5 D5 D5, is much easier if you start with an upstroke on the E string.
