The episode with Courtroom Etiquette was the very first Late Night I ever watched. I was hooked. I didn’t get much sleep in high school after that. Thanks for posting these!
I haven't seen a lot of the 1982-1985 Late Night era, other than highlights that were shown on anniversary specials, and clips that I've started watching recently on this channel and on the Letterman channel. And even though I was a frequent viewer of Late Night from about 1986 or 1987 onward, I never realized just how unbelievably funny Calvert DeForest (Larry 'Bud' Melman) was in the earliest years of the show. The clips in this video from 1982 are some of the funniest Letterman clips I've seen, and it's largely due to DeForest's, um, let's say "unique" acting style. I get the sense that he probably had no idea why people found him so funny. Thanks, Mr. Giller, for posting this wonderful collection!
@@CJ-uo5cl I have always wondered this about all past things. Are we just lucky some people have, say, every single episode of Walker Texas ranger taped on vhs??
Classic compilation. Greatness from Dave and Don Giller... Don for doing the archiving awesomeness this material truly deserves. Great stuff Don! Watched hundreds of hours of your posts. Brilliant presentation! Peace from Montreal.
I have been looking for ‘Lifeboat Etiquette’ for years. I finally searched ‘Larry Bud Melman’ and found your etiquette mix. Thank you. My son is doing a project on choosing survivors on a lifeboat for a college assignment.
Great show, before he became just another Democrat mouthpiece bashing President Bush. MY president...don't entertainers see that they stand to lose 50% of their demographic the minute they start bashing either party? I truly loved this show,so thanks for putting these collections together.
I have been looking forever for the segments where David Letterman would answer viewer's mail in person. That was HILARIOUS! The segment that I'm especially anxious to find is the one where they got a letter from a young boy who was complaining about all the shoes his older sister owned. Sure enough, Letterman showed up (unannounced) to the kid's home and proceeded to invade the girl's bedroom (with her kid brother grinning ear to ear) and started pulling out ALL the girl's shoes, while the film crew sat on her bed! When the girl got home and found out what was happening it was one of the funniest things I have seen in all of my 63 years, lol!
Chris Elliott LAUGHING was the funniest thing about this LMAO hahaha omg I was dying cuz you can HEAR him giggling too! He even tried to nudge LBM with his elbow beforehand hahaha
Thank you for this!!! Great memories of late nights! I remember in college, I had an Oral Interpretation class, and I literally read some of Dave's etiquette. The prof wrote, "Interesting selection". 😂😂😂😂😂
Those early days on NBC were the best for Letterman. Everything was new and fresh, the band really rocked as a small ensemble, and the relatively tiny studio put the audience right in front of Letterman where he could feed off their raucous energy. The CBS show was too big in every sense, and it weighed him and his comedy down.
After the first show, I told my girlfriend that I believed this guy would be around a while. He's still here, and we're still together.. 41 years.. Ha! Love Dave
unless you were too young and didn't catch the show until it was on cbs then you would've had no idea what the nbc show was like and could only judge it on its merits at the time. this was my situation. after watching these nbc shows i'd say the later cbs stuff was a more mature kind of thing. still funny though.
It’d just build on what you wrote: except for the Opening Remarks, it’d be more videos from the book. Though I’ve already uploaded a few of them (Frank and Fred Collection, They Took My Show Away).
So glad they showed that there was actually a plate of donuts backstage. Of all the busted gags in the bit, they made damn sure to have a nice variety of donuts.
As if it wasn't funny enough, you've got Larry Bud Melman saying his lines at the wrong time and mispronouncing No Doze and Tater-tots. Thanks Don, for posting stuff from the early episodes! I didn't start watching until 85/86, and only caught a handful of the older episodes during the writers strikes.
Hilarious!! I didn't pick up the show much before 84 or 85 (Anton Fig year) and I missed a lot of this! I think I remember Talk Show Etiquette from the book....
Chris was an SNL cast member during the 1994-95 season. Likely a writer as well. But his lasting legacy will always be his eight-year employment on Late Night, 1982 to 1990.
Two things (as of now.. I'm still going through these.. 1) That "Hyperventilating" Larry Bud was something I've never seen. Did he do that often during his early appearances? 2) Was "Dave" an actual periodical?
Regarding the end of Airplane Etiquette, do you happen to know what lines were cut off, or other instances of Dave being upset at Pete for a premature applause signal?
Everyone thinks Calvert was just reading cue cards, but that was Larry Bud, it was part of the act just like his genius lack of timing. He had to have at least been a vaudeville star at some point and the rest was just way over our heads!
At 23:51 Larry Bud is behind Dave on the subway car. Then, without a break in the taping or editing, at 23:54 he has changed into someone else and appears soon after farther up in the car. How did they do that?
Calvert was not a good actor, but he always approached his parts with such gusto that it was always funny even when the jokes were bombing. Also, it's funny to see that there was someone who could make Chris Elliot break character, too.
