As a kid, my bedtime was 8pm during the original Late Night run. I would sneak out into the living room every night after Carson and watch the show with the volume turned low, so my folks wouldn't catch me. Tuning into Letterman was like learning a secret handshake, an invitation to join an exclusive club of renegades, luminaries, and outcasts, most of whom were the smartest people in any room. Thanks for contributing to my juvenile delinquency, Dave.
I did the exact same thing. I missed so many days of 7th grade my mom cut the plug on the TV. Almost set the house on fire bare wiring into the socket after that.
Calvert DeForest was comedy gold in such an odd way. Letterman and his team knew how to break the rules of TV and created something special. I love these clips!
Can somebody help me with a memory? It would have been around the late 90s. Dave used to do his monologue, then towards the end and old guy used to walk out and interrupt, but not say anything, then walk off. Was that Larry Bud Melman?
How was this level of improv from Calvert / Larry-Bud achieved? I don't get that his background was in improv / standup comedy. He must be reading off of cue cards, so all the audience questioners were pre-planted with their questions? They all look so genuine and not faking it.
The humor of Larry 'Bud' Melman was that he was so obviously reading cue cards. He wasn't trying to hide the fact. It was his innocent, amateurish delivery that was his genius.
I guess Bob Rooney Day didn't go so well the previous year (ua-cam.com/video/eqIporswtAU/v-deo.html&ab_channel=DonGiller). He was back to handing out T-shirts in this segment 🤣
More than likely this "kid" was an intern or writer on the show who was planted in the audience specifically for this bit - as were all the other ones. These staff members usually had made-up stories about where they were from or what they did, and Dave liked to catch them off guard with random questions.
After they had been doing this segment for a few months, Dave finally asked what was on the T-shirts. He thought they were probably "Late Night With David Letterman" shirts. or something affiliated with NBC...Nope...Just plain white "Fruit of the Loom" type underwear T-shirts ...That made it even funnier! Eventually, they started giving away two shirts per question, and Larry's new catch phrase became "Bob Rooney, please give this nice person two T-shirts. Those were the days, my friend!
When Dave was on NBC it seemed like he had free reign to do whatever he wanted to do. It was low budget gold. When he moved over to CBS they threw loads of money at him and the show became too polished and choreographed for my taste. I quit watching.

You must be living in the west…

Luv the Larry laugh! That hilarious laugh is a punch line in itself.
I always loved it when Larry was on the show.
Man, am I laughing... But pardon me to say my favorite with Bud is when he's at the bus station interviewing arriving passengers.
OMG - YES!!! I am crying laughing at these clips. Oh, man, good times. 😂
I can relate to other comments. I was constantly tired in the morning before school because Letterman would keep me up. The days before DVR!
Thank you LETTERMAN for these awesome clips when LATE NITE was fun!😁👍🏻
Loved Larry Bud.
🤣🤣🤣 Your X boyfriend is bluffing, just go ahead date as many men as you want. I love you Mr. Melman.
Ask Mr Melman was awesome back in the day. That was a fine question ah ha ha
This channel is chock full of Dave’s best clips that are far better than he contemporaries or anything now. How does he not have more subscribers?
I so often wish we could find out whatever happened to there kids that were there .. I love that aspect of the old shows and wondering
One of the best parts of the early days.
We miss ya BUD!!!
I miss Mr. Melman. Good times
Please caption these or set the video language to enable auto captions. These classic clips deserve it!

This pure Late Night brilliance, Nowhere to be seen on late night any more.
My interest in late night shows ended May 2015 when Dave went off the air. All the guys doing it now do not compare.
I wonder if Claudia ever got into the publishing business.
Fact: off-camera, Calvert DeForrest sounded just like James Earl Jones.
Calvert and Paul Reubens attended the same voice training program. It made them the legends they are.
Was this guy the inspiration for Hans Moleman on the Simpsons?
Everyone loved this guy

Right. The questions were pre-cleared before the show started. They quickly wrote responses up on cue cards for Calvert.

Long live Larry !
With apologies to Carson and Conan, Dave was the GOAT.
This episode had Michael Hampton-Cain doing standup. Still looking for footage.
God I miss Late night with David Letterman !
"Afez of da hot." Oh, Calvert.....
good comedy!
love dave miss him

I totally remember Bob Rooney day.....lol
alecian islands???
Fun Fact! Larry "Bud" Melman's real first name was actually Lawrence.
HAHAHA - It's AMA, decades before Reddit did it
The most uncomfortable man when he's in front of a camera ever! Was this an act?
His lack of comfort just made him genuine.
No. Everything on late night tv is totally real.
You wanna see the world trade center now.... you'll have to invent a time machine buddy😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
The kid that completely botched the location in Texas where he was from; was there an explanation for that other than the school system?

The T-shirts- were they anything? Looks like they were just plaiin white shirts..

Nothing on tv today can top these videos. It’s was great time long ago. Today’s talk shows Bore the hell out of me.

@@riverraisin1I still watched but he was much better on NBC.
Poor bud, no acting abilities at all.
Why is everyone wearing sweaters?
Dave kept the studio cold. Mariah Carey mentioned it.
Claudia Lewis. Cute.
making fun of the handicapped is all this was. Shameful
