Great vid. Recognizing Grapevine is an important skillset - glad to see it here!
Got some large-ish grapevines around my yard. Never thought of them as a water source. Cool info.
grapes will put roots down as deep as the top soil. That is location dependant if your soil is 24 inches that is what you get. If it is 60 plus inches like it is here, you get more. You rarely see an established grape vine suffer for drought conditions. Established means more than 5 years old. That vine in the video was decades old. Dont be surprised if the rootstock buds out below the cut and grows a new vine.
Very cool Mike and Dave, many thanks for showing. All the best, Sepp
The problem is that you cut the vine on the bottom first. If the lower end is cut first, the water contained within the vine is drawn up by capillary action and far less water will drain out by the time that the upper end is severed.
Try sawing the vine at a point where the vine takes a downward turn (if possible) - or find another vine that does that. Gravity & the vine pointing downward toward the earth help the flow of water.
nice vid dave and friends never got my vine to shed water now I know it needs be a bigger vine my dad showed me that trick but never got it to work
good eyes, yes it is a a recon scout. This is the carbon V model slightly modified and has been my blade for about 15 years.
wow that's worth the price tag. how has the kraton handle hold up?
Any water source is a good one to know even if it's not 100% reliable. Most grapevines won't put out when you need them to.
Cutting a vine in two will kill the vine - so only do this in a survival situation. One vine a friend of mine cut ended up flooding a big area underneath some trees. Also, remember there's sugar in that water - so drink sparingly from the vine.
You can do this with maple and walnut trees as well 💚
I've had this knife for about 15 years and the handle is fine. I was blesed and found the carbon v at a gun show for $65. If you can find a carbon v version it is the best, it made in America. If you want one like it but bigger you want the trailmaster. They also made a tanto style in th carbon v. These knives are vey strong and durabl.
Excellent.
PLEASE TAKE NOTE!!! Make sure you are tapping Grapevine.. and NOT Poison Ivy or Virgina Creeper. We got about 1/2 quart of fresh water out of this vine over the next 45 mins or so.. and it continued to drip all night!
Yes.. cutting through the vine totally will kill it.. this vine was already almost dead.. there was a HUGE portion of the center missing.. so I didn't feel too badly about taking it for the demonstration
This vine was so majestic that we didn't want to destroy it.. but as we cut through it.. we found it was totally hollow in the center. That's when we decided to cut it off.
These vines though they can provide water in a survival situation, after destructive to trees and will eventually kill them by shading them out or weighing them down so they get uprooted easily. The vines are invasive and are destroying forests in the north east of the US. I use my hand saw to rescue trees by cutting these vines just like the guy in this video ua-cam.com/video/Xhh-A2sCTSw/v-deo.html
doesit kill the vine?
cool vid thanks. is that a CS Recon Scout?
Very nice! Thanks
True that. You should have 100% positive ID on ANY plant you use for food in the wild. Study those plants!
neat trick thanks man
Watch this video if you really want to see the water dripping out of a grapevine in the woods. Interesting that the cut is only at one level of the vine, no upper cut. It is possible a cut an a higher cut would make the water drip out of the vine even faster.
Sorry I forgot to paste the video in. Here it is ua-cam.com/video/Xhh-A2sCTSw/v-deo.html
how do you identifie grapevine
Good eyes Brother.. And I wasn't right there when Mike did that.. or I probably would have said something
Vines on vine violence?
Good info and good lesson on how to adapt and overcome....
Great video BUT..........
DIDN'T like the way you pulled that knife towards your chest when drilling the lower part of vine. BE SAFE! safe = survival
Apparently. I thought it was a tree branch.
