when i trained my boxer as a kid to use the bell,, i used to pick up his paw, and smack the bell, then we would go outside.. took about a week.. I remember the day he did it himself.. we new he wanted to go out because he was running back and forth from us to the door in the other room. then all you heard was a loud clash of bells and he came running back in the room with a look like "DONT YOU GET IT!!!" we all cheered and were so happy..
As much as I wish I had sent my dog to Brandon for training before bringing him home ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU I am so grateful for this down-to-earth, practical guide. His training techniques and tips really work. Thank you as well for dedicating your life's work to rescue dogs, and to rescuing those of us who want the very best for our 4-legged family members.
I taught this to our Maltese, Lola, 15 years ago. And as Zak said, dogs may start ringing the bell just to go outside without needing to potty. That she did. The funniest thing is our cat, who never goes outside, started ringing the bell too. I think it was just to get my attention or maybe to show Lola that cats are smart too! 😂
because of you i got my stubborn yorkie to sit and give me her paw. i thought she would never be trainable since she hasn't been trained for over 6 years. she is getting better. thank you so much!
Can you do a vlog to see what your daily life with inertia is like. Even the boring things like time lapses of her in the crate and you taking pup on a walk as well as the basics that you may practice daily
Wait... how did you teach that to your puppy😂 I might need that because I live in a very big house so I might not hear the bell but still can hear her voice
@@yararaffoul4242 Well I guess it would be more accurate to say he tried it, it worked and so he decided to keep doing it. At first when he was very young he would be crying near the bedroom door in the morning, I would wake up, run to the door to the outside, make him sit and let him out. To him me waking up and taking him outside was like a reward. Also sometimes during the day he would just hang around the door to the outside and I wouldn't open the door but when he sat I would run to the door and open it as a reward. Once he learned that and did it but I didn't notice him, he would cry and whine and "yell" and I would notice it and think he wants to pee and run to the door to let him out and now I suffer listening to him crying at the door every single day. Good luck.
We’ve used these bells on our doors since our dogs were puppies and LOVE THEM! The door they go out isn’t immediately visible from our family room where we spend so much of our time so they are indispensable! We also have a set of them on the back of our master bedroom door so they can let us know when they want to go out at night too! We like them so much so that we take them on vacation with us!
I have officially had Riley for one week and granted, the poodle gene has definitely helped with her training as she is so intelligent, she has been so easy to train and it's 100% thanks to Zak! She is like 90% potty trained within 1 week of being home and only being 10 weeks old, she knows sit, leave it, stay, settle, and she is good about going to the door when she has to go #2. We are working on #1 and hoping to introduce the bells to really cement her potty training. Huge thank you to Zak and his team for EVERYTHING. She is even doing great with the cats and we are preventing reactivity to the scary outside world through the various series.
Hey Zak, you said that there are three reward options, 1) treats. 2) play. 3) access to environment. Those are all true but what about praise and attention. That is a very underrated reward. Some dogs aren't very food or play motivated but almost all love praise and attention from there family!!
People overestimate praise and attention as a reward-- and most people give it as freely as oxygen, so the dogs rarely have to work for it. An effective reward is one the dog is willing to work to earn. Human babies are wired differently, and praise and attention from their mothers is a big reward. We erroneously attribute the value of that to dogs and other animals, and then take it personally when they don't give the behaviors we want in the situations we want.
I taught my dog to do this at 9 weeks of age and so glad I did, she's now 8 months old and she only took about two weeks after i got the bell to be fully accident free, and has been since :) she isnt the type to whine or bark and I also didn't want to encourage barking so the bell was perfect
That's cool. Yea my pup is 8m. Now and he wines to go out. But he will do this thing then play. Come in for a few then bk again to play he loves to be out. Drives me crazy lol. But going to get a bell so he can let me no to come bk in. He likes to jump on the door. But I really want to stop that. 😏
I'm so glad to see this video. I'm a breeder and I give a large puppy care package that includes everything you need for their puppies, including bells. I always send my puppy parents to your page but didn't know that you also have an app! So, I will be telling them about that now! Your videos are informative and well explained. So, they don't feel like they need to be a professional dog trainer to accomplish the same results!! Thanks for all you do!! 😁🐾💞🐶
I got a border collie-blue heeler mix He got it so quickly and I'm so proud. Every day when he wants to go potty he place the paw on the bell. 🐻 It's a really loud bell so I can hear it.
I love how, when your dog suddenly gets what you want her to do, you are always full of wonder and so happy LOL! As a trainer myself, I absolutely got it when you said "I feel like such a dog trainer right now". There are times when I've taught a dog to do something and it feels just like that, even though it's what I do for a living LOL :-)
This vid made me laugh so much, I love how, after all these years of dog training, Zak still gets excited about Inertia’s 1st achievement and is so enthusiastic. I’m currently doing the 30 day training with my pup and loving it. Keep up the fab work! ❤️🐾 x
I taught my dog the touch command. Then I got her to touch the bells. Took about three weeks, but she has far fewer accidents for a puppy that is four months. I did it because I live in an apartment and we don't have a backyard.
I trained my puppy at 9 weeks to use bells he got it right away 2 days by just ringing them each time we took him out to potty and said potty but took him out on a leash to his potty spot trained him to use the bathroom in one spot in the yard and by using the leash and not letting him go out to play when the bell rang he doesn't constantly ring it to go out, to go out to play we say lets go outside and dont ring the bell
If my puppy has to go outside he just sits next to the back door, looking outside until i open it. If im not fast enough he comes to me and let’s me know he has to go outside.
You're lucky, my youngest dog will sit at the front door quietly until you notice. If you don't he won't make a sound, won't come over to you or anything. He'll just go to the bathroom next to the door.
I love your videos, I have learned so much! But what I really do miss is the information about the importance of harnesses vs collars, and how to make sure you dont end up giving your dog spine/back problems. Please give us a video about this!🤗
Thanks for this. Some of us have a much bigger challenge. Our "outside" is hallway, elevator, hallway, outdoors. And half the year the drill is: put on layers, boots, etc on me, and jacket/harness on her...then hallway-elevator-hallway-outdoors... so the association process is not so easy. Good thing I have dogged determination! I think I need to get our gear all on, THEN ring the bell... maybe you could comment?
I just got a desk bell for my puppy. I don’t want him clawing up my door. But with potty training I think we will do our schedule and on the way out have him ring the bell whether we help him to do it or he does it on his own. He is 5 months old and is still having a few accidents by the door if we don’t catch his signal. Sometimes he has the zoomies during play and other times the zoomie is panic and he needs to go outside. But our biggest problem is when the temp drops and he really doesn’t want to go out! I’m in Michigan and Boston terriers are notably cold temp haters! The coats really help.
I have a 5 month old German Shepard pup and i must say I was only able to convince my parents to let me get one because of your videos! They noticed your skill and professionalism and I watched your videos all the time and took tons of notes and stuff and now my puppy is one of the most well trained dogs I know! Thank you so much! 😁❤️
I have tried to teach this to my dog but she was always afraid of the bell. Thank you for showing me how to do It properly so she’s not afraid any!! You have made my life so much easier!
I’m getting a new puppy soon and I’m watching all of ur videos and I feel like I’m learning so much so thank you for making all these amazing training videos 🐶
I needed this video 3 months ago haha!!! I have managed to have her jingle the bells to let us know her water bowl is empty. The desk bell was a nightmare. Untill I watched one of your videos where you show how to turn shake into turning a light switch on. So I worked out how to teach it to her. So hopefully this one will work out. I'd love a really detailed luring video on teaching bow. I want to teach bow and sit pretty. She will lure up to sit pretty but straight up and down. Not sure how to get her holding it. And bow I just can't work out how to lure the position.
I taught my puppy to ring the bells early on in potty training, but I quickly found that he would ring the bells to get my attention for any reason. He often rang the bells to go outside, sure, but he would also ring them and then walk to his food bowl, sit, and look at me. Like "Mom it's 5:33 you're 3 minutes late for dinner time hellooooo" Sometimes he rings the bell, waits for me to come over, and asks for tummy scratches. Sometimes he grabs one of his bedtime stuffed animals, rings the bell, and tries to get me to follow him up to bed. Honestly, he seldom rings the bells to ask to pee anymore, he mostly uses it to remind me that it's time to eat or sleep or play.
Yeah I have the same challenge now. We would go a few rounds and he wouldn’t go. Then I ignored my chi, then he “made” an accident. As is he tried to “punish” my “bad” behavior to not take him out again. Any one has suggestions to solve this?
Love, love, love! I’ve always thought this was such a cool trick, and so useful! She’s just getting so good at everything! She always takes to new things so well! You guys are just great together! Thanks for another awesome, fun video! God bless and hugs to you, Bree, and all of the fur babies!☺️❤️
When I got my border collie as an 8 week old pup, I already had a bell there ready to teach her. After a few days I started teaching her to use it. She was sitting at the back door, waiting to go out, so I picked her up and bumped her nose into the bell, then praised her and let her out. An hour later, she rang the bell herself and I let her straight out. Never had to show her again. ... although, little did I know that I had created a monster at that point. She started using the bell to summon me to play with her. She's too damn smart!
I taught my 6 and 7 month old pug puppies to go outside when we ring the bell but I want them to ring it instead of them jumping at the door. It’s the only stump we’ve had with potty training. Pugs are notorious for not letting you know when they have to go so I want them to associate the bell with potty time
This is such a helpful video! My cavoodle has learnt that if she scratches at the windows fly wire she will quickly get put outside 🙄😬 whereas when she wants to come in, she barks a couple of times, which is interesting since I never taught her to do that.. I’m pretty keen to give the bell method a go! 🔔
Yea for my 6 ye old she will do the 1 bark 2 bark to come in. But my 8m old he's a wild one. He jumps on door. Like hello I ready to come in now. Smh lol. He got me train to run to door lmao. Have a good one. I'm going 2 try the bell. Wish me luck lol
I love your videos it’s amazing how you can train dogs IWatched your videos from my first dog you really helped us your videos really help us people like me and my family thank you for doing what you do
Hey Zak i just wanted to say how much I love these videos. I’m getting a dog soon and me and my family watch your videos on a daily basis. Your videos are brilliant and informative, keep up the Exquisite work
My cats ring the bell to go outside, but I can't get my dog to do this. I think with this explicit explanation I will be able to teach her to finally ring the bell!
I'm trying to teach my 3 month old Australian Shepherd puppy this. She's a smart cookie but she only wants to acknowledge the treats, so she's paying attention to me instead. She picks up tricks and commands really quickly but roll over and this are a chore for her. LOL. But she's smarter than her brother who may sister has.
If we want the bell sound (ie bell ringing behavior) to always predict "Owner will come open the door for you to go out" it is problematic to attach the bells to the doorknob. Why? because every time we go in and out that door in OTHER contexts (where the dog isn't asking to go out) the bells will ring and it weakens the cue. So hang the bells NEXT to the door on a cup-hook or something so they ONLY ring when the dog MAKES them ring-- not every time the door opens and closes.
when i trained my boxer as a kid to use the bell,, i used to pick up his paw, and smack the bell, then we would go outside.. took about a week.. I remember the day he did it himself.. we new he wanted to go out because he was running back and forth from us to the door in the other room. then all you heard was a loud clash of bells and he came running back in the room with a look like "DONT YOU GET IT!!!" we all cheered and were so happy..

Maybe the cat genuinely would like to go outside. Poor thing.
Yes. Trying to train our new puppy and our 3 year old dog this. Left one day and heard our Cat playing with it.
That is so hilarious and made my day. So maybe I shouldn’t use the bell 🛎️
She looked so cute while ringing the bell and trying to figure it out! 😍
Ya
she started KNOCKING THAT BELL OVER FOR THAT TREAT! I LAUGHED SO HARD

Tiredly awaiting incorporating my 7 week pup’s bell AFTER she’s fully potty trained😩💖#ZombieStatus #NoSleepGang #EveryTwoHours #MyBabyThough
My design for this would be a ribbon with bells and a soft toy or ball that they can grab and shake - something that they probably already do.
I was gonna start teaching this to my dog 😄
I’ve literally just trained my dog this in like a week then this video comes up😂
i love these series
My border collie learned this when he was 3 months old🥰 Love ur vids soooo much😊
This is just what I needed! I just got my puppy and really want to teach him to use the bells
You should make a video of you and Inertia’s bloopers 😂
Best teaching technique ever! thanks for this one.
Inertia is so cute!
Shes so smart!
I'm 100% my border collie mix, Indy, will do this just to get me to walk away from my snack so he can sneak in and take it. Clever!
I love your videos it’s amazing how you can train dogs IWatched your videos from my first dog you really helped us your videos really help us people like me and my family thank you for doing what you do
wow, this was really amazing to watch.
Hey Zak i just wanted to say how much I love these videos.
I’m getting a dog soon and me and my family watch your videos on a daily basis.
Your videos are brilliant and informative, keep up the Exquisite work
Can you start a new series on how to train a Yorkshire Terrier?
My cats ring the bell to go outside, but I can't get my dog to do this. I think with this explicit explanation I will be able to teach her to finally ring the bell!
I'm trying to teach my 3 month old Australian Shepherd puppy this. She's a smart cookie but she only wants to acknowledge the treats, so she's paying attention to me instead. She picks up tricks and commands really quickly but roll over and this are a chore for her. LOL. But she's smarter than her brother who may sister has.
We need a video on the speech buttons that some owners are using now! I'd love to see your reaction or maybe trying it with Inertia!
