really glad I found this video, if I'm honest I always steered clear of prescription shooting glasses in the misconception that they were price prohibitive.
Glad it was of use! Some of the premium options do come with a higher price point, but there are some decent budget options too 🤓💥💥
Wow. That is very much helpful. Thanks a lot. I am long sighted, which you may find okay when shooting trap. However, I am practicing IPSC. That requires my eye focus on the sight of a handgun. I am currently wearing reading glasses coupled with a polycarbonate wrap-around safety glasses. It works but it is not ideal. I am definitely looking into a better approach and your video gave me a lot of options and inspiration. Thanks!
Helpful. Thank you.
Thanks for the videos. I learned of you through the video you did with TGS. I've been running both Oakley and RE Ranger glasses for years in my RX. I find Oakley FlakJacket and now Flak option very good from an eye protection standpoint when used for many activities. I mainly wear them when on the rifle and pistol range for several weeks a year. They also work well for cycling with the Flak frames being better than the FlakJacket for my face shape. You hit on a good point about some of the lens tints being discontinued with VR-28 being the one I miss the most for being adaptable.
I've owned my 2 pairs of Ranger frames for over 20 years and they have been shockingly durable. When I ordered them I also ordered several different lenses thinking each tint would be used a good amount. THAT was a mistake and there are some of the tints that I don't think I've taken out of the case in 10 years. The default tint that I DO keep in each frame is the light purple and dark purple for my area which is Upstate NYS. Thanks again!
A pleasure - I’ll be recording more this year, if there are any specific topics you’d like to see covered please mention them below👇
You’re dead right, the build quality of the RE products is fantastic. Oakley has gone off the boil a little since their acquisition by Luxottica but hopefully they can come back with some strong offerings next year. Shoot well!
Thank you.!
Hope it’s useful!
Great information! Can you add some links to the products/companies mentioned? I'm an archer in need of good glasses and want to investigate further. Thank you!
Thank you. Certainly one of the most knowledgeable and helpful videos I have seen on this topic. I am in the States and mostly shoot handguns at both indoor and outdoor targets. I am near-sighted (OD/OS both -1.50). Wearing prescription spectacles, I cannot see the pistol sights. Without correction, I cannot see the target. Do I run prescription for one eye and plano for the other?
That’s a great question! So I would experiment with some daily disposable contacts, cheap and super comfortable.
I would try full rx in one eye for distance and maybe -0.50 in the other.
You could then experiment with subtle variations depending on success and “feel”. I’ve had some really positive results with Multifocal contacts too!
Oakley used to make some corrective lens that were "welded" into the single lens of sunglasses. I liked it better than an insert, and owned a pair for golf. They are now at the bottom of the Atlantic (long story)... Did they/do they have these for shooting?
They were great! They used to be available in the Mframe and Radar. They still offer two Radar versions but only in clear and polarised grey, would be great if they could bring all the colours back!
Thxs
awsome knowledge
Thank you! I’ll do some more soon😎💥💥
Can post a link to the glasses you talked about. I wear prescription glasses with progress lenes and would like to see my options. Thanks
Hello John - if you could send me your prescription I can help directly
Ed@ed-lyons.com
Can you talk about the magic dot please. I need it on my left eye especially on left to right targeting
Dang dude, you want to make my glasses??? You know it all!
Would love to!
Really good video moor on eye care please.
Thank you! I’ll be adding lots more later on this year, planning to write and record a series covering lots of visual topics - if you have any questions you’d like answering please post them!
My shooting friend has a floater on is eye the options said you have to put up with it they said is brain will soon ignore it is this true thank you 👍
@@iantunnicliffe4509 good question - it depends whether the floater or floaters cause enough visual problems to warrant the risk associated with surgery. I made a short video about floaters somewhere on the channel and will make some more this year 👍
Very informative video, thank you. What are your views on progressive lenses for shooting glasses? I currently use an old '90s pair of Armani 186 721 frames with progressive transitions lenses for shooting.
Thank you! They’re useful for those who have a need to score and read whilst shooting, but can be something of a visual compromise as with a progressive lens the periphery is blurred. As a shooters eyes are often elevated and laterally displaced with a mounted gun, this can create blur when looking for the targets.
I have made offset Bifocals in the past which allows the user reading vision but creates no peripheral aberration
@@edlyonssportsvision9197 Very helpful, thank you Ed
@@rastacountry you’re welcome!
Hi Ed. I assume you can get the Sporter with progressive lenses? How much are the Zeiss clip ons for the Sporter. Thank for the video. Very useful.
Hi Dan - yes you can, although progressive lenses can be a little off-putting for some people due to the peripheral aberrations in the lens. For those that want to have some functional reading aspect, a small bifocal is a cheaper and easier solution.
The clip on lenses start about £75 or so, Randolph Engineering have produced some new lenses which I’ll be receiving soon so will review them!
Great video. In your proffesional opinion is it better to wear contact lenses or have prescription glasses. Thanks in advance.
Thank you! Sometimes contact lenses can be excellent, and there is a big difference between the vision that can be achieved with a generic lens and a custom made design, especially if the user has some astigmatism (a difference in the curvature of the cornea or lens)
I wear Gas Permeable lenses myself and find them excellent. As my prescription is -7.00 diopters, prescription shooting glasses for me would be heavy and cumbersome.
If someone struggles with Dry Eyes or lenses that move around too much, prescription glasses will often be better 🤓💥💥
would you recommend the pilla 540s for single vision prescription ? ball park figure for said glasses ? tia
Yes for a higher fitting product, or the 580’s for a larger face.
Ballpark figure from £539 👍
thank you , will be in touch .@@edlyonssportsvision9197
Wow. What helpful video. Currently my challenge is pain from thick arms from the frames, and wearing over the ear hearing protection. Of those frames mentioned, or any other recommendation, which frames my have lowest frame arms profile that might not compromise hearing protection? Thoughts? Thank you.
Thank you! Glad you found it useful. What do you wear currently and could you tell me what your prescription is please? That way I can give you some tailored advice 👍
@@edlyonssportsvision9197 Awesome. Yes. I am wearing Oakley Mainlink frame. Had them for a few years now and got my prescription filled by a company called sportrx. My prescription I believe is -1.75 both eyes, and I have a slight astigmatism (very slight that I do not require special contact lenses when I do wear them). I was really looking for a more wrap around frame if possible as I do a lot of shooting activities in the outdoors in variable conditions. Thoughts?
Thoughts on Oakley Detcord?
@@s940867 they’re ok, a tweaked version of the old Fuel Cell style. Some people get on with them, others find they sit too low and the choice of lens colours isn’t particularly extensive for clay shooting
For game shooting, especially Grouse, they’re a decent choice
@@edlyonssportsvision9197 Any other recommendations for a more active shooter style, let's say tactical both night and day shooting?
I live in the states, where can I get a pair of shooting glasses with the insert I have prescription glasses, it is a pain to shoot with just my regular glasses, I need something with more of a bigger frame. I like the Unser idea!
Where in the USA are you Koby? I’ll look to see who may be able to help. Alternatively you could send me your prescription and we can make some for you 😎💥💥
@@edlyonssportsvision9197 In Northern lower Michigan.
Do you have any experience with prism in shooting glasses? Thank you.
Yes absolutely!
Oakley arms are straight and do not stay in pisition
They can be adjusted to fit more securely but agree they don’t suit everyone
I have the Edge Ranger glasses. What does it cost to get some prescription lens for this?
Approx £359 per set of lenses
Is it possible to use “safety glasses “, my dad had some that he used for work . The ones with the wings on the side, I’m now old like him & use bi-focus lenses. Any suggestions plz
Yes absolutely! They’ll be impact resistant and inexpensive, your local optician will be able to help
@@edlyonssportsvision9197 thanks Ed , one day I’ll get some from you
Hi love the video.
But are Pilla ballistic safe
Absolutely yes. The less costly options are too (Ranger, XSight, top gun, evolution etc)
Anything made of polycarbonate or polyamide is fine
Awesome but are they also usa mil spec for shrapnel etc.
And how would they stack up against Outlaw's ,Gatorz,Wiley's
@@jermainejacobs9962 absolutely fine - we do lots for military operatives too
Can I go to a regular optometrist eyeglass place and get these glasses or is there a special places that I need to go?
Hello! Where are you based?
How much are the prescription lens for the RX580
Hello Michael. £359 for the 580, 540, Raptor, Ranger Edge and DeLaRo styles.
From £260 for the Ranger sporter and from £310 for the new Edwards Eyewear Hiroki2 frame 😎💥💥
@@edlyonssportsvision9197 Thanks for that but I think I'm going to have to look at others if a set of lens are over £350
@@mrsplashboy1 No worries. All the quality optical lenses are around that these days.
