  • Mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato and Kenyatta Hughes perform Hughes’s song, “A Place for Us,” at Sing Sing Correctional Facility on December 18, 2015.
For the past eight years, men at Sing Sing Correctional Facility have been participating in Carnegie Hall’s Musical Connections program. As part of a year-long learning experience, they engage in a series of workshops led by professional musicians that focus on composition and instrumental skills, leading to regular concerts that feature new works by participants performed for the facility’s general population.
In fall 2015, as a part of The Somewhere Project-Carnegie Hall’s citywide exploration of West Side Story-Sing Sing’s musicians were asked to reflect upon themes found in West Side Story to incorporate into their own music. In addition to a performance at Sing Sing in December 2015, some of these songs were presented in free Neighborhood Concerts taking place throughout New York City this season.
This project is part of Carnegie Hall’s Musical Connections program, a set of community-based projects that link people to a variety of musical experiences created in partnership with city agencies, ranging from standalone concerts to intensive creative workshops designed to have a powerful impact on participants’ daily lives.
