The orchestra plays so sensitively and colourfully here (and they know it, notice their faint smiles), it's as if DiDonato's accompanying them, not the other way around! My ears are drawn, every time I listen to this performance, to the exquisite sounds of the orchestra.

Just wonderful - what control Joyce shows all the way through. Excellent.

The legato that comes out from her throat is so up high in the sky and yet beautifully effortless and seamless. I can't wait to hear her sing more Strauss' orchestral songs and lieder.

This is why she is one of the world's leading mezzos ! Sa voix est vraiment merveilleuse. Incroyable :)

Haha, her tone is unsteady and the high pianos are stiff and not on the air flow. But todays audience is deaf, as are the people who have power in classical. Listen how her higher notes at the end are trembling and she sounds like a goat! HORRIBLE! Are you deaf? This is as bad singing as it gets, if she would have any honesty she would go ashamed from the stage.

In quel vibrato ; cosi' dolce
    E trattenuto e' quello
    Svolazzare che si sente
    Mentre ci si avvicina
    Al momento di quella diastasi
    Opalescente.

I scratch my soul out imaging Lady Ludwig laugh loud about it... which language she sing it? The orchestra hold sound all the time. Where the exuberance of Strauss?

JDD is mistaken in thinking this (or any other Lied) is a mere vocalise. There are words in this after all. Also notice how Sir Simon how to turn down the volume to a whisper so she could be heard. It certainly worked as it nearly put me to sleep. Must be that JDD is in competition with one Schwanewilms for who can produce the lowest volume (at the expense of so much).

Strauss wrote this for piano first before orchestrating it. The opening instructions in the piano score are “ppp, una corda, sehr leicht und fluchtig”. The dynamics hardly change throughout, they go up to p, then back to ppp, there is a mf at the climax, and ends ppp. The orchestra is supposed to play that softly. That’s the effect he was going for.

I honestly don't get the hype. Her voice is a mess , the grotesque bleating vibrato, often out of tune, nasal and doesn't project, runs short of breath and her oft written about "artistry" is so calculated, pretentious and affected as to make Schwarzkopf blush.

Out of tune, goat vibrato, almost inaudible, affected and disingenuous performance.
