      Actually...the real magic is that no one would notice it. The brain would be processing the effect with the viewer not even realizing its impact. So yeah, that's the reason to "put in all this effort". ;)

      CG is not sterile, but it's also not 2D. For better or worse CG has (and by that I mean: the trend is) to look more like a "live action movie" where fantastical things can happen while 2D can have more stylistic liberties.

      @@felixrogers9569 Good point! Spiderverse definitely takes creative freedom in their all the animation, even adding 2D in some portions (wait a...). Spiderverse is an amazing CG film but sadly it's an exception, not the rule.
      But to that you may answer that toystory 4 is _also_ an exception with how much detail they put in, when most 3d films compare to Source film maker animations, and not professionally shot films.
      I guess I do have a personal bias in the subject, oh well.

    • @jadeberry2402
      @jadeberry2402 4 роки тому +24

      yeah, I'm super biased toward 2D animation, I always prefer it, so much so I refuse to watch new Disney princess movies. If I do watch them, you can bet I'm gonna insult the animation at least oncr., But I gotta admit, the toy story animation looks absolutely beautiful, you can see how much effort they put into it and hating on that just feels mean.

    • @averyk7
      @averyk7 4 роки тому +30

      Sugar2000galaxy We got so far with the design of Andy as well! After watching Toy Story 1 after seeing some of the scenes from Andy’s childhood in Toy Story 4 during the beginning, you can see an amazing difference between how realistic he looks and how much better he looks as well.
      In Toy Story 1, you can see how simplistic Andy looks in general without much hair, clothes, skin, eyes and lighting detail as well. Toy Story 4 has a lot more attention on the way he looks overall.
      Of course, the difference is all because of the 3D animation processes and such they use. They’ve come a long way since 25 years ago, so you can’t blame Toy Story 1 for not having as much attention to detail as some of the newer animations. Though, Toy Story 1 was probably by far the best animated film of its time back then.
      Anyways, kudos to the team and everyone who had their part in contributing to this film. I’m not so much for the story, but the visual design is amazing and wonderful.

    I've had a theory that part of the reason people reject 3D animation as if they're cartoons is partially because we've grown with 2D cartoons all our lives. For example: If someone wants to make 3D characters for a Japanese Anime look like their 2D hand drawn version, everything from lighting, line weight, and even timing/smoothness needs to be adjusted. So even though you can 3D animate a character with sweeping sleek 60/120 fps, it'll "look" wrong because it's almost "too perfect." So reverting to 24 fps and classic 2D animation techniques becomes important to create the illusion. Did you know many of Naruto's animations are done with 3D characters? They've just gotten so darn good at hiding/convincing you it's still 2D.

    I love how on the Toy Story movies, they use cameras at the size and proportion of the toys. But when they are filming humans handling toys, they use "normal" sized cameras and suddenly the toy characters just become plastic toys.

    This video not only expresses how great cinematography can be insightful storytelling but casually informs people of the technical decisions in filmmaking. Furthermore, I enjoyed the elegant details in your editing, if it's either masking the right side of the split diopter shot, to playoff "Forky's" dialogue as part of a joke or the simple cut to the cat with beautifully shaped specular highlights flowing down its body as you bring up the cinematographers use of light. I enjoyed the experience, such a well-crafted video.

    I think they simply wanted the left character stand out through shallow depth of field. This would, however, make the right character be blurry. That's why they rendered the whole thing a second time and combined the shots. This technique is actually less surprising than the older diopter technique. I didn't know that this existed.
