How do become comfortable with being yourself? How do you quit negative self-talk?
Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are taking a look at Aladdin’s journey from insecurity and low self-worth to self-acceptance and integrity. They talk about Aladdin’s negative self-talk and why he keeps hurting people. Jonathan explains why insecurity makes us unable to accept love from others. Aladdin does this a lot! And Alan relates to this a lot... send him praise in comments! And they can’t watch Aladdin without talking about Robin Williams’s unforgettable performance as the Genie.

Wow. I wish my ex could have been less critical of himself.
I love how Alan and Jono interact with each other. The moment when Jono commented about Aladdin not being muddy and Alan asks "do you know why that is?" clearly excited to share his knowledge. Jono just very lightly says "No, but I want to watch this part." It's so wholesome how he doesn't completely shut Alan down, he answers his question, and indicates that this is a conversation he's open to having but not in that exact moment, Alan is respectful of that and not offended, and Jono returns to the topic once the scene is over, showing Alan that he wasn't just blowing him off and does want to continue the conversation. Such a small moment but such a good show of good communication.

That's really interesting, because many people unconsciously do specific things/have 'tells', when they lie. So to use an external 'prop' to characterise that kind of behavior is pretty clever, and very Disney.

Seeing a movie set in middle eastern / south Asian culture meant so much to me as a little girl who only ever saw negativity about my culture on tv. Sure, now that I’m grown I can see how it’s problematic and mixes a lot of cultures but it felt like the world to me as a toddler. It was the first time I picked up a veiled Barbie instead of the traditional blonde one. Or stopped seeing my nose as ugly. I could see myself in a princess. My mom also grew up hearing “it’s a shame you’re so dark” and when she saw me admiring Jasmine and her features, she stopped hiding from the sun. It was small and maybe even stupid, but little stupid things can break cycles.

I think something worth noting, is the Sultan having a small arc himself. He has no real will himself throughout the movie, until the end. He clearly wants his Daughter to be happy, but he is unable to overcome what I can only assume is tradition, and Jafar of course. It's nice to see the moment when he gains the backbone to change things so his Daughter can be happy.
Yeah and I assume that Jafar has been using that hypnotising staff on him the whole time to get him to do what he wants.
In a more realistic sense, the sultan was likely weighing his daughter's happiness against the political advantages of marrying her to another kingdom (to end a war or establish a powerful alliance). Some leaders would definitely see it as a worthy sacrifice if it means saving the lives of thousands of young men by avoiding bloody conflict. Mulan 2 explored this a little where the emperor's three daughters were aware of the political environment and were willing to make this sacrifice to avoid a repeat of the war of the first movie.
@@lilarrin1220 That's a fair point, though it doesn't quite work here as he was literally only doing so because of the law that was in place. It is an interesting point to explore though. It's too bad Mulan 2 went the way most Disney direct to video media went.
"The pain of staying the same becomes greater than the pain of changing." is a great way to describe that feeling of rock bottom. Both painful, both difficult, but one door looking just slightly more open and welcoming than the other.

To he honest, that whip thing more than the bread part convinced me that Aladdin was legit a great person. He was willing to take a beating with a whip to defend those kids.
That's one of my fave parts of the whole movie! I love when he's kind and sweet like that! lol.

I love how Genie's first thing after his freedom is another joke. "Ask for the Nile", under certain affectations that's "de nile", ie "denial". So in effect, Genie grants the wish by rejecting it XD

What I like about Aladdin being kind to the orphan children is he knows what it’s like to grow up on the street and no one has ever shown him kindness so now that he’s in his late teens, early 20’s, he wants to give them kindness so they can grow up knowing they are not alone. That goes to show anyone of any status has good in their heart, regardless of what they lack. He doesn’t believe he’s worthy of Jasmine because she’s a princess and he’s a peasant but she already likes him because he’s kind and resourceful and charming. She’s mad that he lied to her, but she sees the good in him and how he cares about her and others, and she doesn’t care that he’s not a prince, especially after all the snobby, stuffy princes she’s met before
Yeah, I really like when Aladdin gives his bread, which he worked hard to get, to the orphan children, that is having a big heart and it was one of the first examples of compassion that I learned as a child in Disney movies
Something I think kept getting lost or downplayed was the fact that Aladdin pretending to be a prince was done primarily because of a political barrier; he had no choice if he was ever going to even be _able_ to see Jasmine again. That being said, his real mistake was in thinking that status was at all important to her, especially when she makes her disdain for stuck up princes quite clear. He doesn't appreciate the fact that she's gotten to know and like him for who he is _before_ he took on the facade.
I just don't like that he totally lied and she was like "yeah that's cool, lets get married." I think there is a line where an apology is not enough

With the wish thing, you're not wrong. Someone once pointed out that if Aladdin had wished that Jasmine had the power to change the law herself, say by her becoming Sultana, he would've successfully solved the issue he tried to address with his prince wish but in a way that was both honest/made with integrity for himself and which would've empowered Jasmine and shown he respected her integrity/personhood too. I always thought that was spot on.
Yeah but that would be out of Aladdin's character up until the end of the movie. For majority of the plot, Aladdin was unsatisfied with HIMSELF. He already saw Jasmine as empowered - hence, it would not make much sense for him to even think of such a solution.
Oh man, that beginning part when Johnathan said, "We make poor choices trying to make people accept us, instead of accepting ourselves and finding that right people." that hits so hard for me, because that me my whole life before I met my best friend. All my life I was bullied and outcast for looking and acting different and being into different subjects from everyone else around me (I was diagnosed later in life as Autistic and I've always been a geek). I did so much trying to get people to accept and include me and it hurt so bad every time I was rejected. Then in 2009, I started talking to someone online, who would go on to become my best friend, as close as a sibling, and who accepted me for who I was and taught me to love and accept myself. It's been 15 years and we're still very close besties!
Loving this analysis on how Aladdin keeps with the lies without realizing the harm he’s causing onto others.
If you focus on the gem on his headpiece as he’s “Prince Ali”, the gem is typically blue when he’s honest, but then shifts to a more purplish hue when he’s being dishonest (leaning towards red, which this film tells us means DANGER like in the prison when Jafar leads him out).

@@matityaloran9157 I learned about the movie's color theory and what the colors mean in Aladdin thanks to a film podcast called "School of Movies", you should really check them out, they're very informative and entertaining.
I never realized the change in the gem’s color before. To add to this, I do remember someone pointing out that the feather drops whenever he lies :)
Learning the color change of the gem AND the feather drop adds extra emphasis through what Aladdin's mental state is going through, which is critical to communication. @@KickinSapphire

I have a vulnerability kink. I like to see people being themselves and for every weakness shown I love them more. (Seemingly) perfect things and peolpe are just cold, lifeless and unreachable. We need warmth, closeness, flaws to be able to connect, and without connections we are just lost in our lives.
I have been rejected so much in my life (and bullied) that at this point I kinda gave up and have this "I will be my true, weird self inside and out and I don't give a damn what you think"-mentality, which ironically has made me more popular than I ever was before. In essence: be yourself and the right people will gravitate to you.

Even if they don’t, you will be happier. People haven’t really gravitated to me from deciding to be myself not caring what others think, but I am more happy
One thing I realized when I was very young was that telling the truth makes everyone incredibly more lenient (in cases where authority is involved) and people are more likely to also tell you the truth.
I always joke with my friends that I missed out on high school drama because nobody could make up assumptions or gossip. What you see is what you get.
It made for a peaceful, yet quite boring high school experience tbh.
Aladdin is so close to my heart. Being from the Arab culture, it goes hand in hand with the culture. You have to be the best at everything whether looks, career, status and so on. Anything less isn't good enough. For Jasmine, she goes through what a lot of the females go through in the culture too. She has to be perfect, quiet and not stand up for herself but she is ahead of her time. Genie is the "therapist" we didn't know we needed as kids. Aladdin had to let go of that negative self talk and actually listen. He was amazing all along. But, I will say... One Thousand and One Nights (Arabian Nights) is really one of the most fascinating books if you get a translation closest to the original. What Shahrazad goes through dealing with Shahryar. That in itself is something else.
There’s an outtake between Robin and Scott where Scott says the line “How do I look?” and Robin complete deadpan says “Like a vampire with a day pass.” 😂😂😂 (Love the line, Still trying to figure what that means… does he look ashen or like death warmed over?)

Your kindness, your sense of humor, your encyclopedic knowledge of filmmaking, your wit, and your charm, are all so dazzling that your hair is noticed far and away the least. You are a good man and a good friend and those are both such rare things that you are not a diamond in the rough, but a fully polished one, and your sparkle lights up the lives of everyone around you. Be yourself and be proud of your journey and how many people you have helped along theirs.

I love the theory that Aladdin is set thousands of years in the future because how else would Genie know all the pop culture references, actors, & what a submarine is.

That a cool idea I started playing tale of arise and tho silly I like that because of magic you can be a guy with a sword but still can take down people with assault rifle also at one part you walk into a ruin that is an advance building with sliding door and computer like what you see in Star Trek the game is a mix of fantasy with some sci fi elements

Thank you for doing this movie. It was my favorite as a kid, alongside the Lion King. And as a currently unhoused person living in a tent going on 9 months now after a house fire last summer, it means so much more to me these days. You betcha i was singing along, always will.

11:09 when Jono started talking about how he dealt with his insecurities I felt so seen. So much of my insecurities take the form of believing my worth isn’t inherent and all of the things I’ve accomplished would go away in an instant if all my mistakes were revealed. That there is an imposter and because of that I wouldn’t be accepted and would be rejected because who I inherently am is not lovable, worthy, and acceptable. It truly hit a part of me that felt my own dishonesty to myself and it has me crying. Even though I am well aware of all of my good qualities, worthiness, lovable traits and such. But truly believing it is an everyday practice and today is one of those days.
Even today on what feels like a rug has been ripped out from under me. I know that I’m worth it and I will be better. Thanks Alan and Jono, you gave me things to work on and the feeling of being seen. ❤

Alan beating himself up has made me so sad!! I’ve been watching you guys since 2020 and I was pregnant with my first son (he turns 3 in May). You both have supported me through my parenting so much that you’ll never know, it makes me so sad when Alan beats himself up, even as a joke. Last year I saw the Broadway version of Aladdin. I noticed the stage Aladdin is even more of a fast/smooth-talker than the movie version, and he's consistent with that from the beginning, from trying to swindle some people and trying to woo Jasmine when they first meet. In that version, I felt like he wasn't just scared to tell Jasmine the truth, but he was literally so used to lying that he couldn't stop himself.
And ultimately, it's that same quick thinking and fast talking that traps Jaffar in a lamp, which feels like a very Arabian Nights way of dealing with things.
Aladdin definitely had the classic case of low self-esteem. That feeling that you can be a good person but if it doesn't seem to be paying off, if karma doesn't seem to be rewarding the goodness, you will feel frustrated to the point where you're looking at other ways to get people to see you as you deserve to be seen. Aladdin is a good person. He knows he's a good person but there's also, I think a frustration
Idk if this is a bit too cynical to say but thats also something a lot of ppl have been saying about modern-day men, where they feel even if they try to be nice there’s really no positive reception to it, there’s just a blank wall and you revert to being bitter because you tried and ppl rejected you anyways. And sometimes ppl genuinely are decent and do their best and they just don’t get anywhere, they dont make friends or find a partner, that shit sucks and it absolutely can make you feel like whats the point and hit rock bottom and you go into more negative directions to try and be seen

Women respond that way because we’re trying to stay safe. It’s not personal, I wish we could take kindness as kindness! But there’s far too many men that fake nice to manipulate us into a relationship or into compromising our safety. The other reason we don’t respond is because if we do respond positively some men interpret it as flirting. Basically some men wouldn’t be nice or friendly if they weren’t attracted to us, so they assume we’re the same and interpret our behaviour through that lens. So if we’re friendly to the wrong man they get the wrong idea and then we have to turn them down more obviously. And that means we have to deal with an angry man who’s just been rejected which is literally the biggest threat to our safety that exists on this earth. So we try to avoid that possibility because there’s no sure way to tell who’s nice and who’s pretending.
And sometimes men think they’re being nice because they’ve let other men inform their ideas of what women like, when actually it’s not nice at all. A bit like how Aladdin thought Jasmine would want a Prince who acted like the other Princes, but she didn’t lol.
I know being a man can be lonely, this is just a small part of it. And I know loneliness isn’t a minor issue, it’s really taxing on people’s health. But women are usually just trying to stay safe.
@@EmL-kg5gn of course, I only meant it how one side perceived that rejection, but women should not have the responsibility of having to comfort every guy that might be nice to them or always react positively to it. It's no one's responsibility to solve another person's loneliness, and its frustrating that a lot of narratives do seem to set the blame on women in more ways than one, that either they're superficial exploitative ppl who use men, or they are horrible for not consoling the loneliness in men and being nicer to them. People can be very decent but a lot lot of people just aren't and also every time one of those manosphere, masculinity podcasts show up it shows that they do not have any of the basic grasp of what different experiences are like. There's that imbalance of men get no compliments and no affection on default, and women get constant attention, constant compliments, constantly people approaching them, and so much of it usually very dishonest and just tactics to try and date them, plus any time some of those malicious ppl get a response it leads them to go too far, or they get violent if rejected, so there's always danger as you said. idk if i'm describing it accurately but the thing is, one side gets way too much attention, the other not at all, and either side don't understand the others experience, there's still so many of those influencers and whatnot who just have no grasp of why flirting or harassing every girl you see is bad becuz they dont experience getting that much attention ever as a guy. Anyways, its pretty clear nowadays considering the amount of research and studies and books being written that this problem of self-esteem and the way it corrupts ppl is only going to get worse, influencers exploit that low confidence and steer ppl towards extremist views to solve it. Honestly Andrew Tate preaches like the way darker version of an Aladdin type story, from rags to riches but then never realising that having money and fame and cars and buying everything isn't the true happiness nor does it get you lasting relationships or love.
@@GuineaPigEveryday Yes I agree!! One of the great things about social media is that it lets you hear other perspectives. It’s too bad algorithms have been designed to create the opposite effect. The more I hear about men’s friendships the more I understand why men look to women to address their loneliness. Men can be pretty hostile to other men too even though it’s not usually as extreme as what they sometimes do to women. But I don’t think any of these things are inherent to men, I think it’s cultural and it can change with a lot of time and effort.
Also what you said about Andrew Tate is so true! I grew up in a borderline cult and people like him remind me of it. The kind of reasoning his followers use is identical to what I experienced growing up, even though the subject and behaviours are usually different. Unfortunately it’s extremely hard to get out of that mindset once you’re in it

If we count the sequels and series into the analysis Aladdin might be one of the most developed heroes in the entire Disney canon (I actually grew up way more familiar with the series than I did the original movie and actually saw the first film after already watching the show -- which is probably why Robin Williams being replaced by Dan Castallaneta as genie never bothered me as much as it did everybody else)
I've always had a soft spot for the show... if only the animation were better tho

I love this one quote (cannot remember which famous married person said this). He said about his still wife “she motivates me to be a better man” citing things like “I can be myself around her” and that is always an indicator of real lasting love. Never change yourself to win over someone else. If someone didn’t appreciate you when you were yourself they don’t value you. Jasmine not only values but prefers Aladdin when he is a poor street rat and not the handsome princes she frequently refuses. And she won’t be treated like property!

I usually listen to these in the background. Something about hearing Robin's delivery isolated to audio made it hit different. His talant to pivot so fast and remain genuine is completely unmatched.
There's a song cut from the movie that's restored in the stage version and segues directly out of the clip at 2:44 - it's called "Proud of Your Boy." Would love to hear what our Internet Dads think of that song, which is Aladdin promising to turn things around and live in a way that would make his mother proud - the lyrics are a blend of accountability, determination and a dash of self-loathing, and seem like pretty fertile ground for therapy.

And what you were discussing when Aladdin freed Genie is the reason why Robin Williams was my favourite actor. Most actors can do dramatic, a lot of actors can do comedy, few actors can do either, but no-one could do both like he did.

I still love the fact that the writers for the screenplay made the Genie with Robin Williams in mind and part of what got him to agree was having been sent a video of his joke about multiple personalities as the Genie
i think the fact that Aladdin didnt use his third wish to free Genie when its brought up (despite promising) indicates at that point in the movie. Genie was a 'safety net'. If people realized he used magic to become a Prince, Aladdin wanted that third wish to maybe change people's mind or rewrite history so he could 'stay on top' (aka be 'worthy' of marrying Jasmine); cause it seemed magic that is used by a Genie doesnt cease to exist if a Genie is freed (Aladdin lost his Prince outfit due to Jafar using his sorcerer magic to remove it) so Aladdin wanted something to go back to if things turned out bad. (even if it meant breaking his promise and leaving Genie enslaved)
Of course. Aladdin grew up poor and starving. Anyone in a situation like that would go for a safety net, even if they wanted to make the better choice when it came down to it, out of sheer survival instinct. It's when Aladdin gets to a point where his morals become more important to him than his desperation that he makes the choice to free the Genie.

Absolutely. My best friend has been in my life since the fifth grade. I was a bridesmaid in her wedding and I am still convinced that she will decide that she doesn't want anything to do with me. It just doesn't connect sometimes.
I value honesty because I was forced to lie as a child and I never liked it. Being honest just feels so much better. Valuing myself and loving myself was a long hard battle, and there can still be moments of doubt where my abuser's voice is in my head. Thanks for this episode! I was needing it.

Disney's Aladdin has always been my favorite Disney movie, and Aladdin my favorite character
Something I’ve recently noticed after yet another rewatch (don’t judge me I’m Disney obsessed :), is that every time Aladdin is showing his true self, his prince hat is off. However, every time he is lying or concealing his true identity, he has the hat on. We can see examples of this when he tries to come clean to Jasmine (hat off), but instead she dismisses him and places his hat back on. Or when they are sitting on the roof and talking, Jasmine takes his hat off, she wants to know the truth, but before lying yet again, Aladdin takes the hat back and places it right back on his head.
Aladdin has always been one of my favourites from Disney's movies. Even if Aladdin had a lot of self-growth to do, I've related to him and believed in him like he was always a prince at heart. I also believe in you, Cinema Therapy, and yes, Alan, your hair is amazing. I was born in 88 so I was at the perfect age when this movie came out. My friends and I could literally quote every line of dialogue and we would do it quite often while we were playing. We would seriously do the entire movie from beginning to end.

I rewatched this movie recently. Like a few weeks ago.
You both are excellent people not only for being awesome in general, but for sharing yourselves, your insecurities, and talking about all these emotions and openness in a world where people are belittled so easily for showing themselves honestly. Sensitivity and emotional intelligence is downplayed so much, but it is such a core part of being human. You both bring more into these movies and the discussions around them. Thank you for always bringing great insight and awesome commentary into these rewatches!

I love Aladdin the way he is, because at his core he’s a selfless young man who cares and that’s who Jasmine fell in love with, and she would’ve loved him for who he was just like we do. He was perfect just the way he was

As a child, and even more in adulthood, I never understood why Aladdin thought that genie wouldn’t do anything for him after being freed. I always thought that their friendship was solid enough that genie would help Aladdin out with some magic here and there. I guess that’s just me thinking Aladdin and Genie are soulmate bffs.
This is my childhood movie, Aladdin was my first role model as a kid, and I still feel this movie so much, 30 years later.
