Lol the way you stared after saying "They will become Loong and leggy" Like you spoke out of experience. cracked me up. Also my Portulacaria Afra has been thriving thanks to you for the knowledge you shared.
I don't promote any company but as strong as you can find. Under 100w is just maintaining a Portulacaria.. if you want it to grow you need to go higher
Love your plants. I have a question about a 3 weeks ago i bought a Porulacaria Afra tree off Amazon. They say is 3 years old but im not sure cause 12in hight and they said it would be between 5-7 in. The directions told me to put it in a darker spot of my house for 2 weeks and not to water it to the leaves start to curl. So i dead what they said and a day after i watered it i put it under a grow lite and now after a week of it being under the lite i lost about a 100 leafs. Im not using so high power lite its just a 8watt Great Value lite frow wallmart. Its One of those annoying ones that is blue and purple😂. At first I had it 6 inches from the top of the plant and I noticed it burning so I moved it up to 12 inches and I'm still having problems with the leaves turning crispy. Also I noticed in the soil that there are a lot of small roots that I can see coming out of the soil. So do you think this is a light problem, or something with soil? I have only water 1 time so far that was about 8 days ago. Sould i be watting more. If you could give me some pointers i'd greatly appreciate it don't want to kill this little guy. Thanks in advance...
Definitely a light problem. You need much much stronger lights for Portulacaria. I am using 277w lamps and I feel it's not enough for what I want 😁 Soil can be a big problem for them also. Portulacaria wants and needs a very free drainage soil. And I have no schedule for watering.. I water when I see sighs of the leaves losing their plumpness.
hello I bought a sansi light 2 days ago of 10W pointing to my portulacaria at 5cm the plant live indoor at 21° from end of october (when I bought it) and has still some loss of wrinkled leaf, I give some water (each 15 days), and the substrate is not completely granular, I remove the plant from the bonsai vase and add below the soil a strate of akadama to help areate the roots. But still I have some wrinkled leaf, can be considered normal?
I have different mixes for most of them. It depends on what is available. But i try to use as little organic as possible. Pumice/ lava / akadama would be ideal.
Thanks, I think that'll help a lot. Why exactly do you have to wire portulacaria especially tight though? I had the impression they're rather soft compared to more woody tree species so that's why I'm confused. Am I wrong about that? I'm completely new to "Bonsai from scratch", got a small portulacaria as my first, so I probably just missed something. Lastly, doesn't it leave marks if wrapped tight?
It takes longer for the branch to hold it's position. And it will not scar the brash the same way it does on "normal" trees. It will leave a scar but it will "pop" back after a while
I have 2 inch small ones and I have it in 50/50 organic/mineral mix under lights. The leaves are wrinkly and I water them but they stay wrinkly. I just soak the soil until it comes out of the bottom. I've watered it twice since buying. Once a week. Do you think I need to water more often or soak it longer?
@@TreeVibes I only have one light on it, I feel it's strong enough but I'm really not sure how to measure that. I ended up watering them a lot and they bounced back. I have them in a well draining soil and I'm thinking I might need to add some more organic substance to it so it retains a bit more moisture. Thanks for replying!
There is a app called Protone that can help you measure. It's not 100% accurate but close enough. I use no organic material for my ports. They grow much better and healthier.
I use osmocote bloom and urea. High in nitrogen and all year around. You can NOT over fertilize a Portulacaria 😁 My Portulacarias has never been outside and they grow under LEDs indoors all year around.
I like to keep osmocote into my cactus soil then fertilize with a liquid succulent fertilizer (20/20/20) once a month April-September. I keep them in full sun and move them in my garage Under lamps October to February they do well in Northern California
First time I have Portulacaria Afra ( Mediopicta), It's in a small pot. I just moved it from outside to Indoor near window ( west ) because it's getting cold outside. Now I don't know what to do. Should I buy grow light or just leave it alone?.
There wasn’t really anything about how you are growing these plants indoors. it looks like you’re doing a great job, but you didn’t mention what type of lighting you use or the nutrients that you put in the soil, when you prune them, etc. You mentioned number of other things that was good information, but didn’t tell us how you grow them indoors. Can you tell us what type of light you use and what are the nutrients that you put in the soil? Also what is it you do indoors that are good for growth? That would be great. Even better do another video.
I don't go into details because I am not sponsored by any company and I don't want to promote any products because all products are not really available everywhere in the world. I said how the soil structure should be. I said Don't be afraid to Nuke it with nutrients (add as much nitrogen as possible). I said how strong lamps should be 😁 and pruning depends on what you want to achieve 😉

🤣 yes I started out growing them without lamps in a window and guess what happened 🤣
I really appreciate your kind works 🙏
Thanks, nice video, well explained 👍
Great info and video…love these plants…thanks
Thank you 🙏😊
Great video man! Subbed!
🙏🙏
Very informative. Just received some of these. Getting a lot of leaf drop on repotted ones. Rooted ones are doing great though.
Thank you 😊 and best of luck to you
What lights do you recommend?, thanks

Hi, superb trees, I get yellowing of leaves and the drop off - is this overwatering please?
It is usually low light or too much water
Thanks, I think that'll help a lot.

What soil are you using for these? And what nutrients are you adding when you say you can’t overdo it?
Mostly depend on what is available . For fertilizer i use osmocote bloom and urea. High nitrogen
@@TreeVibes when I google this name, I come up empty. What source do you use for this fertilizer.
@@markolp8206
When i Google osmocote bloom i get a lot of results. It's a very big brand and can be found in a lot of countries i think.
what grow light do you use?
I don't use any brand names. But the LEDs are all Samsung and Osram leds

How strong are the lights? Sounds like problems with roots if the leaves do go back to normal when you water.

@@TreeVibes Good to know on both things. I'll try to change out my soil before winter and I'll check out the app 👍🏼
Can you share with us what type of fertilizers you use and do you only feed in the spring or other times throughout the year as well? Thanku😊

Definitely buy a growlight 100%. But not the cheap pink ones from amazon/aliexpress They will do nothing for a portulacaria
How long before I see roots after placing in water?
Depends a little bit on the conditions you give it but from a week to a month
Where do you get those square plant pots from ??? i love them
Ordered from china 👍
