Great video! Just a note: 5:17 Portulacaria afra Bonsai - I don't think this is an actual variation, just a very old elephant bush that has been fertilized for many years
Absolutely wonderful presentation! I must admit, I'm a bit envious of all the amazing varieties you have. I recently saw the pink variegata type being sold commercially in Korea, and it was truly astonishing! The way they showcase the new pink sprouts makes them look like flowers. Such creativity in presentation!
*_Fantastic compilation of Elephant Bush Varieties my friend. +40. Excellent and informative video !!_* *_Thank you very much. Have a nice Sunday. Best regards :-)_*
Most insightful video I’ve seen on elephant bush, my shopping list has grown significantly but that’s great because it means I have to spend more time looking around garden centres
Portulacaria afra f. Variegata Pink is def more rare and has more pronounced pink color. It is also more rare than the standard variegated elephant bush. The variegata tips will show signs of pink with stress of sun or cold. Hope that helps!
Wow absolutely gorgeous plants : ) Great tips and info : ) Like # 82 : ) Excellent work : ) Fantastic presentation and Video Mary Ellen : ) Full Watch : ) Gorgeous colors : ) Thank you so much for sharing this awesome presentation and video : )
hello my friend.wow amazing plant.beautiful and cute plant.thanks for sharing my friend.thanks for the informations too..new friend here.stay connected🤗❤️👌
I have a variegated variety called 'Kaleidoscope', not sure if it’s just a cultivar of the standard _P. afra_ or _P. afra variegata_ or what, or the minima, etc. It seems to grow more vertically like the standard species. But unlike the variegated form, it’s much more neon and has pink edging to the white- and green-striped leaves. I also have the minima 'Liliput', I guess because its leaves are so tiny. Lol. I like the minima a lot, it seems to be much more of a creeping, cascading variety.
WOW what a wonderful upload dear Mary Ann !! Thank you for this really interesting sharing !! Warm greetings from the "GoA" in Austria ...have a great new week my beautiful friend....Saderé💜👍53💕😘....👋

Hi Mary Ellen, I don't mean to be argumentative but they are actually related to Crassula. They are in the same plant family Crasulaceae. But they are not the same species.
Thanks for the video! I love the Aurea; it seems to grow as fast as the normal variety, but looks great with the gold tips. I agree with you on the Pink Variegata - I'm going to find one somewhere!
@@moodyblooms to tell the truth, I'm trying to get them to grow as fast as I can. I'm going to make them into bonsai, and I've been feeding them like mad! Thanks for your reply and happy growing! 😊
@@moodyblooms these Portulacaria make nice ones too. And seeing I should have started growing bonsai 40 years ago, the quick growth means I can hopefully get some reasonable ones without having to wait for ever!
Hello Moody Blooms, Just watched your video and I really enjoyed listening to your very informative video. I heard you mention that the tricolor pink is a wish-list plant for you, and I would be happy to share it with you by sending a cutting.
I have so many questions! Wish I could send pics! I have a plant I found in my apt trash room that I bought back to amazing health! It's huge now. It looks like 3 of these varieties! Is that possible?
Thanks for the information on this lovely plant. I just bought a tiny pot of Portulacaria “Kaleidoscope” but it looks exactly like Afra Medio Picta. Do you happen to know if they are similar? Thanks for your lovely videos!
Hi, I have a portulacaria afra variegata pink(tricolour) and no matter what i do, it seems to be dying. I'm not over watering it. Please tell me how to save it and how i should look after it. Many many thanks ❤
you missed the cork bark is named "frank yee" after the creator of it. the rainbow variety with the heavy variegation that grows lots of full moon/all white leafs. different from the one rainbow you named. also the new "candy" portulcaria. thats chemical induced i think. its just now reaching the us markets. its been in asia for a year or 2. probably was not available anywhere in western countries when you made this video. they just started to be sold in cali and florida ive seen the last month or 2. great break down tho
Thanks for the additional info Mike! I appreciate it. Yes, I have heard about the "Candy" variety, but did not know it was chemically induced. Thanks for stopping by!
You can technically grow any of them as a bonsai. But there are lots of different styles and looks within the world of bonsai, based off of the natural growth of trees and shrubs. If you ever see a cool tree growing somewhere and you like the shape of it, or it just looks unique, chances are there is a Japanese word in bonsai terms to describe it. Whether it’s straight and vertical (chokkan), creeping (kengai), mounted on a rock (ishiguki), branching slightly sideways (moyogi), etc. Luckily, Portulacaria, and also many types of Crassula (jades), are great at this. They do better than traditional trees…when it comes time to repot, it’s actually better to completely remove a succulent’s roots and let it start over. This makes growing in a tiny bonsai pot so easy. Of course, root pruning happens with regular bonsai, but it’s slightly riskier with non-succulent plants if you don’t know what you’re doing. Succulents don’t even hardly need their roots. They have everything they need in their leaves. That’s the part you should try not to break! 😂
I have grown the variegated portulacaria before. I don’t think I’ll be able to grow a hedge of them here, but it is amazing the sizes they can reach in their native environment.
Why talk about portulcaria afra a African plant and show Asian elephants mostly ( Indian elephant) making out were dummy's then .get you facts straight you try to lead me a stray no chance sonshine😂
I apologize that she says portulcaria is mistaken for crassula ovata I don't think people are that thick film makers straying from the truth again saying people don't know what they really do know😂
I get a lot of questions if this is in fact a jade plant or a Crassula plant. I’m not straying from the truth in any way shape or form. I love plants and I love caring for them. I have learned some things through trial and error and thought I’d share. In no way am I trying to be dishonest or stray from the truth Lee. I am sorry to have upset you so much. I hope you have a beautiful day. 💚
Yeah, I completely agree. It is confused by a lot of people! I regularly let people know what they think is a jade is in fact an elephant bush. Not every one is versed in the two and they don’t know what they don’t know. We all start somewhere!😊

It needs to be in well draining soil, and only water when the soil is dry.
@@moodyblooms Thank you...❤
Of course! Hope it’s doing better 💚🌳💚
I have a couple that were absolutely huge. Then my goats ate them. Had to cage the plants and they are growing back nicely
Oh no!! Silly goats!! Glad to hear they are growing back.
What nutrients do they like in their native habitat ?
Good question... I actually don't know. My guess would be some nitrogen.

No, not at this time.
Its not called portulacaria afra "bonsai" . . . But what variety? Obviously one that grows tall. Could i get a ssp name?
You are correct. It is just the portulacaria afra grown as a bonsai, so technically not a variety, but a different way of growing it.
