I’ve received my HP Reverb G2 1,5 weeks ago and was really worried about the tracking. I play Onward in competition so I can’t afford having my controllers lose tracking at all... I am happy to inform you all I tested, practiced and even played the Onward Championship finals with these controllers, and it went flawless. Not a single hickup!!! I must inform you though, lighthouses will always be better, cause you need to consider the shortcomings of inside out tracking and adapt your playstyle to the lack of lighthouses with the Reverb. 1. I always play with a gunstock from ProtubeVR, so my controllers are always at the same distance of my headset, making sure I don’t accidentally bring them too close to my head(and of course improved accuracy to freehanding) 2. I tried using new 1,5V regular AA batteries(cheap brand) and had quite some tracking issues. Switched to my 1,2V recheargable high quality AA batteries and not a single hiccup 3. I can’t keep my hands all the way down next to my body to run, cause after a few seconds that the cameras don’t see the controllers, it’ll freeze and directions won’t work correctly anymore, so I keep my hands a little in front of me so cameras can capt at all time 4. Throwing nades is perfect as long as you remember this freeze thingie. If you hold your hands behind you, ready to throw, it’ll lose the connection and when throwing you’ll just drop it at your feet. However, if you just hold your nade in front of you just before you do your throw, it’ll manage to predict perfectly the movement you made and you’ll be able to pinpoint your nade on any target. So my conclusion: are there better controllers out there? Yes. Are these one worthless? Definitely not!!! You just need to adapt your playstyle. I came from original Rift(which had the best tracking and controllers out there imo) but the visual advantage BY FAR outweigh the ‘lesser’ controllers from the HP Reverb G2. I’ve spent over 1000hours, building musclememory on how to play Onward competitively. And I managed to adapt in less than a week to the Reverb, playing high stakes in the championship finals.
Literally watching this with the G2 sitting the chair next to me, ready to unbox and set up. This was a looooong wait but it's finally here. Tonight's the night. Thanks for all your awesome vids Sabastian.
You're going to love it. The image quality is *insane*, and I have both Quests. My Quest 2 looked great to me, but now it looks "blurry" compared to the clarity of the G2.
@@johnaharren7348 It's extremely clear and the controllers tracked just fine. It is definitely worth the money imo. The FOV though sucks. The index 120hz and 130 deg is hard to beat in those areas. I'm def not selling my index. I have a feeling I'll go back to it.
Noticing that this video does not answer the question in the title I wanted to tell you my exp as an actual owner that has had it for a business week. So being that I am a repair tech with a focus on deep tech repair/smt/smd I decided I would apply logical troubleshooting to my issues. The tracking was bad out of the box with the batts they provided. Remembering that there is a strict requirement for 1.5v batts I promptly replaced them batts that suit the requirements of HP. Tracking was still an issue but It didn't seem to be as apparent. Troubleshooting further I obviously noted that the tracking was based on the visible light spectrum. To increase the chances of the sensors tracking the controllers and environment I (using smart lights) turned off my bulbs directly above my play space, turned off all led accent lighting, and dimmed the offset top down light diffuser to variants of 4%-35% brightness. Oh and I turned off my led keyboards back lighting. What happened was the following. Tracking felt like it improved however it felt slight and unquantifiable. It wasn't like using better batts.. I just "felt" a little better.. the thing is that with the batts I had random hands drifting way off in the distance for seconds on end and that had stopped along with the stuttering of tracked movements within the movements of arms reach. These are the things that had been fixed with that. as for the lighting adjustment it was an improvement however unquantifiable unlike the batts. The persistent issues that I still have are the following: Throwing items that require movement obtusely above your head (basketball, boneworks) will be hurled kinda forward maybe. Your movements in this way are not even tangentially coordinated to your irl movements. Its bad.. movement from the sides in like pitching a baseball are better than this however you must adapt to the unnatural learning curve. anything within a foot to a foot and a half of your waist while looking straight forward will not be tracked. Note: I am 5ft 7in and 185lbs. chubby however not on the higher end of it. Throwing like a softball like pitch can be wild because the hands will register some odd movement in which they drift up to your chest. The best way I can describe this is that if you are pointing at something in steam VR home or Microsoft home from your waits the accelerometers will note the point, it will feel off bc acetometers are like that and the source of the beam will not be at your waits. it will be high in your chest. its wild. once you look down it all snaps back. predictive tracking = bad. This is what you can expect and its honest of me to say that. Given I am not here to review I will just tell you that this headset purchase meant a prompt investment into the index lighthouses and knuckles. you must do this to have an immersive experience. You may be able to enjoy and look past these shortcoming and if so I am genuinely happy for you bc its a great device if you can! I however want to leave this terrible covid world behind and live in VR so I need at least "good" tracking for it to happen. HP, decompile the quest 2 tracking, rewrite it and push the fw update to us for it. thats the answer for this product as it stands. Ps. I wrote this rather fast and I do have some actual issues with dyslexia. Please forgive me for my poor writing. If you have questions about the product please feel free to ask and I will answer as I can.
These are my exact experiences as well and I'm pretty disappointed, even though I'm coming from a system as bad as the original Rift. No youtuber seems to have quantified how bad the tracking was.
I have now owned my G2 for one week. It is my very first VR headset. Because of the crisp and clear video, the visual immersion is fantastic. The field of view is more than adequate to me. The comfort is so good, after a few minutes, I totally forget I have something on my head. Yes, if I hold my hands down to my sides I will lose tracking. But I've learned to hold my hands at belt height and a little away from my body, and I experience no tracking issues. I'm sure some who have experienced other headsets will see it differently because they will have a different reference set than I do. I don't have the experience of using other headsets. As a newcomer to VR, I am extremely happy with this headset.
Ive had mine for a little under a couple of weeks now and I have no problems with the G2 Tracking. I love the overall performance of the G2 and the biggest thing for me is the image. It's now longer just wow - its WOWWWWWWWWWWWWW .......
Hi Steve! Thanks for your comment! Yes, I simply thought it is important to show tracking again and also its weak points so people get a better idea and can judge for themselves! :) Looking forward to talk to you soon. :)
Did you watch a different video to me, the video i just watched showed that the tracking is subpar, light temperamental, suffers from occlusion. The G2 is a great headset for Flight simms using hotas, but realistically the controllers are trash and will only cause frustration for people trying to get the right levels. Not even talking about lack of capacitive touch or battery life, lousy haptics, or the ergonomics due to the big rings. I hope we see Microsoft announce a new revision that use infrared, have capacitive touch and fixes all the issues, then ill buy one.
@@LightningAussie Let me guess. You own an Index. Of course, it's not going to compare well with that. Plenty of gameplay videos out there with the G2 and it seems perfectly usable, but far from perfect. It has the occasional glitch here and there and when dropping arms to the side it can freak out. As far as I can tell it doesn't break the gameplay, but isn't what you'd use in competitive games if you want perfect tracking.
Good analysis and proof that it works behind your back with the motion sensors. I couldn't believe they made a faulty product, and appearently the didn't. Thank you very much. I find this acceptable together with the lighting explanation.
Thanks for the insights. I was getting worried based on those other reviews, but you did a wonderful job of explaining and showing how to make things work properly
Thanks so much for the rec room example. First good true overview that doesnt just highlight the bad. I ordered of of these on black friday and knowing the tracking isnt as bad as people say and that the screens are better than my quest2 i think ill be very happy with this headset
I’ve got a dome light up on the ceiling when on makes the controllers go crazy in game. Opened it up and there is a ring of LEDs in it. Question is what type of bulb, tungsten or fluorescence. I also have a lamp on the desk with an LED screw in bulb so that gets replaced. RGB lights on the Ring fans in my PC, a mirror behind me in a very small play area.
LED lights work fine, if it is having issues, you're probably using super cheap ones that flicker. (Human eye can't see it but WMR can). Get some flicker free ones.
@9:32 So in shooters like pavlov where you often pick up guns from the ground, you need to look down to pick gun up..otherwise hands wont reach the ground? Could you test?
I've got one and can confirm, that you'll need to look down almost directly at your hands to maintain tracking. I got used to it, but it's a bit annoying
Been playing with mine over the weekend. Tracking was perfectly fine for me, even in a pretty dark room I didn’t really have any issues. The only issue I had was when I was facing the window on a sunny day where the controllers seemed to glitch a bit (head tracking still worked fine). After some initial pains getting the headset setup (it’s not as intuitive as say a vive or oculus), I’ve been having a blast.
I think in that logic, the darker it is, the better it should work too. But I've been hearing from everyone that you need a good light in your room, which conflicts with the way it works. What do you think?
@@mtnsaray I wouldn’t say darker is better, just that it can work pretty well in dark environments. The biggest thing with head tracking is ‘contrast’ not ‘lighting’. It needs features to track so it’s not going to work very well in a room with nothing in it and the walls painted one colour, but I don’t imagine that many people would be trying to do this anyway. Secondly, for hand tracking I have found that as long as your controllers (in relation to your head) aren’t in front of a window with direct sunlight coming through, then I have never lost tracking once.
I didn't wait for this one and I'm glad about my decision. I chose to buy what's available - a HTC Cosmos Elite + Base Stations + Index Controllers. I'm pretty happy, I have almost zero screen door effects, vivid colors, crisp clarity and a good sound. The Knuckles are absolutely awesome, the tracking is flawless. I can live with the 110° FOV and the only thing that's kind of annoying is the small sweet spot the Elite has, but the more I use it, the easier it is to find. I might still do lense upgrade later one, but overall it is a good package and wasn't THAT expensive because I was able to catch a demo model headset for about 140 Euros cheaper with warranty. I wouldn't even want to try the G2 tracking anymore, even though I'm sure the picture quality is great.
Thanks for the tips, my G2 will hopefully arrive soon so I'm excited to test it out. I'll be following your tutorial to get the Index controllers working with it as well, so I'm not too worried about the G2 controllers.
Got my G2 last week and can confirm Index controllers work great with G2, they don't work well with my quest 2. Just make sure you launch steam vr from your desktop instead of windows app, I made that mistake and had to recalibrate the controllers.
It’s not ideal but as long as the tracking is ok in the area specified here it wouldn’t be a major problem for me. This was a great demonstration and actually made me realise this issue isn’t a deal killer.
These tracking shortcomings are a deal-breaker for me. I would spend an extra 200$ on body trackers and finger sensors on the controllers. Striking G2 off of my list. I'm willing to pay upwards of 1k USD for VR. One shortcoming and I'm out. The only valve index killer for me is the outdated resolution situation and rgb dots.
Then use the G2 with Knuckles controllers and lighthouses. That would put you right around $1K. Plus, the Index is like an 8-week wait, although the G2 isn't exactly "run into Best Buy and pick-up" either.
I have the HP Reverb G2, I improved tracking with black paper with white sticky tape crosses on them and stuck it on the wall. Now tracking is amazing.
I sold mine unopened for a nice profit for a number of reasons. 1) I couldn't find a damn 3080 to buy and my current pc isn't up to spec to enjoy this headset. When I preordered this my plan was to buy a new gpu and cpu and have everything ready before it arrived. Thanks to the bots/scalpers that didn't happen and probably won't for a few more months. 2) Too many reviewers and guys on reddit complaining about the tracking volume. Losing tracking ruins the immersion IMO. 3) The controllers still need improvement. The tracking rings are huge, lack of capacitive touch and the poor haptic feedback are all negatives. I really wanted this to be my next VR headset, but I'm going to hold out upgrading until a headset comes out that checks more of the boxes that I'm looking for. I'm sure Valve is working on a new product to bring to the pc market. At least I hope so!

I think you're going to regret buying into the Facebook-paid hype against these controllers. Each to their own, though.
@ I couldn't use it anyway until I found a new GPU and I wasn't going to buy a prior generation gpu. No point on looking at it sitting on my desk. I can always buy a new Reverb G2 a few months down the road when they should be readily available if I change my mind.
@@Jaysun1 I expect to make the very same call - similar reasons. No pre-ordered RTX 3080 on the horizon - and the G2 controllers - in the hands of other reviewers - have burst the bubble.
I received mine last Thursday and was willing to live with the tracking issues. Unfortunately the buttons (A,B,X,Y) on both controllers did not work at all. I called about a replacement and was told it would be a couple of months before I would see a replacement. I was also told that they are receiving a lot of these back. I asked for a return authorization and ordered a Quest 2. It’s too bad, because the visuals were so good. I’m hoping something better comes out in the future.
If you try Ironlights with Quest 2, you will see amazing clearity as G2 . I tried many quest games but thats the only game full utilize on quest 2 native display.I think all native quest 2 will be like that in the future title
Just got my Reverb G2. Tracking works just fine for me. I would say it's roughly equivalent to my Rift S, but with much greater clarity. DCS is fantastic. I can read everything!
Hi. Great informative info. I have just got my G2 but having problems. I only do Sim Racing. Do you have to have both controllers on and close to the head set for it to work correctly. Many thanks.
Thank you so much for making these videos Sebastian. We need more informative people to help out. Other UA-camrs just kind of brush off the G2 too quickly based on low level information and don't do enough research and tests. As for the part where the G2 loses tracking when the controllers are up close, I think a software update would fix that. I own a Rift S and I remember even though it had IR tracking, it lost it when the controllers were up near the headset until software 1.39 update came out. So maybe HP is aware of it and fixes in the next update. I'm still waiting on my pre-order to come and can't wait to see what SkyrimVr looks like after I added 300+ mods to it!
Great video as always. Still waiting for my Reverb G2 to arrive, been told December 10th at the latest (In the UK). Decided to splash out for my birthday and bought the Index controllers and 2 lighthouse base stations. Turns out they're actually going to be here before the headset haha.
I've had my Reverb G2 for a full week and I've been using it non stop. I've only had minor tracking issues. I would buy this headset again in a second and I don't plan on using my Rift S ever again.
@@georgetav77 I've played 5 hours of zero caliber. The only issue I really had was accidently bringing a controller too close the the HMD while aiming. You can still kinda aim with your other arm but its not ideal.
@@georgetav77 Not Pavlov, but I did play Onward for a couple hours. The tracking would get a little sketchy up close but I adjusted my stock and it was ok. I'm sure a software update will take care of that in the near future.
@@georgetav77 Only tracking issue I've ever had was bringing it right in my face but that's pretty much it. People like VRO paint a really bad picture of the headset
Hey ChickenBuiscuits, i currently have a lenovo explorer, and i am doubting between upgrading to either valve index or G2, my only problem with the WMR i have now is that when i plays shooters and use a sniper i can’t aim at all, do you have any feedback on wether you can aim with snipers without the tracking going apeshit? Thanks in advance!
I had my Reverb G2 for about 10 days now and I will return it tomorrow... After it arrived, I plugged it in, then struggled to get it working for 2 days. I used all the USB ports on my motherboard (ASUS TUF x570 Plus) and tried all the Display ports on my GPU (RTX 2080 ti) and unfortunately WMR Portal kept giving me Error Code 7-14 and did not want to see the Headset, even after multiple widows updates and driver updates and uninstalls, BIOS flash, Windows update roll back and every suggestion on online support forums. My last idea was to buy a USB-c extension slot on the PCI-E and so I waited for it to be delivered in 2 days. Got the USB card, and plugged the headset and surprise ... it worked!!!... But then... my computer started to reboot randomly when idle... I thought that maybe there are some driver issues again and tried all the solutions online with no success... My last idea was to roll back to the previous windows update and that seemed to work... But with that, the HP R2 headset had to be setup again, I ran through the setup process again and for some reason it got stuck after it finished the setup, so i gave it a restart. Turned everything back on and now the headset turns on but when I put it on my head, it keeps rebooting (windows logo and startup sound on and on and on)... Looked up online for solutions, and tried all the driver updates and restarts and uninstalls again even went back to the latest windows update and now the headset just keeps rebooting. The 3 or so days it worked, it was great, with minor tracking issues that you explained in this video, but I am all out of energy trying to make this work. I also have an Oculus Rift S that i only had to plug in and play... I don't know how to fix this anymore... I think that it is embarrassing that they release a great headset that has this many issues running. And from what I read online I'm not the only one with these kind of problems. It is just too much to hope that they will fix this with an update someday after my 30 day return period. I will have to request a refund and maybe wait for the next gen of Oculus or Index because WMR is just a lost cause for me. Absolutely disappointing.
I also have an X570 motherboard which is why I'm cancelling and I've already gotten a quest 2 2 days ago. I don't particularly like Facebook but quest 2 rn is my only other affordable upgrade path.
I finally went with the Index instead. I don't want to play around the tracking all the time and wait forever until HP finally delivers to Europe in 2050. I want to forget the tracking when ingame. Delivery took half a week and I'm happy now. Index controllers are a blast.
For just a little extra, you could get G2 with Index controllers and lighthouse. I think it would cost about $1200 instead of the $1000 you spent on Index. But it would come with the additional clarity while retaining the same tracking as Index.
Mine is being returned. Bottom line: the tracking is bad. I demonstrated this in AltSpaceVR where I raised my hand in front of people and my hand stuck in a specific place when my real hand got to a specific height. I could recreate it each time. Constantly moving your hands is not a solution. Seriously. If you've used the touch controllers or index knuckle controllers for any length of time, these controllers are a very hard pill to swallow. The batteries in my Quest 2 are still the same ones that it came with back in October. I have yet to need to replace them. The G2 controllers last a day and a half, and take two of them making them heavy. They're also so big, that you'll more than likely clank them together playing Synth Riders or FitVR. No capacitive touch is a bad decision as well. That should be standard on every VR controller now. It's compromise every step of the way. Even the pass-through system is stupid. Flashlights? Really? Great, so you can't put down your controllers to do do anything in the real world using pass-through. I can change the battery in my Quest in less than 30 seconds using pass-through, but since you need a battery in your controllers, and youy need to hold the other controller, you can't do that in the Reverb. It's too bad because the image is incredible. Unfortunately VR is also about immersion and the controllers and the tracking pull you right out of it. When I went back to my Quest 2 after a day in the Reverb, it was a relief.
People are talking about how it's just people complaining and that it's fine, but from what I've seen it's a big issue, you can't even put the controllers to your sides without losing tracking.
Reading articles about the G2 and most would just say the headset tracking is bad, thank you for explaining the "how and why" of the tracking shortcomings.
Thanks, this was a very neutral and objective review. I guess the tracking is gonna work just fine with me since I always have a very dim light in my room. Its a shame they didn't invest a little bit more to controllers though. Still a good starting point to get as a headset.
I've been hearing all this great stuff about the G2 but I'm a little concerned about whether or not the controllers will be frustrating, since I'm wanting to play Half-Life Alyx, and also about if the cable will be a safety concern. My room has no ceiling lights, just a couple track lights on one wall, which might possibly help.
I have hp reverb g2 and they can work well a good amount of the time, howeveryou will definitely get tracking issues from time to time as your hands start to go above your head and below your waist, and too much to the side. General motions it kind of works well enough but there will be times that your controllers get caught on a certain area. As for the cord, it generally isn't a safety concern, you learn to move around it. I would reccommend buying a cord management kit from amazon. You install pulleys on the cieling, or if you want create a post, then run the cable along the cieling using multiple bade reel like pulleys which will move according to your movement. That way the cord is allways above your head and you can spin around with without runnning into the cord.
Across all the reviews and including the livestreams, the main issue I've seen pop again and again is failing to properly do the "unpocketing" motion, aka grabbing something on your hip, which tons of games use, unless you're looking at it. It's a widespread motion and tbh one the G2 would need some major update to support properly.
That's problem with all inside out tracking headsets. That's just how their all designed.

No update needed from the G2 if controller inertia is involved - the G2 knows where the controller/s are during a sweep movement - so a sweep back, click to grab, and continue sweep forward to aim then throw. If the controller is allowed to remain stationary in any blind spot...well, the player is asking for trouble. --> The Devs MUST code "unpocketing" with these blindspots in mind so that the correct action MUST involve controller inertia. As a programmer myself, this is very simple to do. Very few headsets involve knuckles controllers - and the Devs know this!!
@ But very many headsets involve fully tracked roomscale controllers, see CV1, Vive/pro, Pimax, and Index numbers on steam hardware survey, which BTW totals 54% of all VR headsets used with steam. That doesn't include any of the WMR or even Oculus headsets that are paired with knuckles or Vive wands for better tracking. But is also a simplification with regards to the number of oculus, vive, and index sets used solely for simming where tracked controllers are never used.
Have they fixed the below the waist tracking yet? The walking dead is terrible when it can't see the controllers by your sides when you try and grab your weapons by your hips
Thank you for your channel, Do you think is it possible to use HP Reverb connected on a thunderbolt 3 dock? Or the output video connexions have chance to block it at 60Hz? Yea I do VR on a laptop, and till now it's perfect for my use. Thank you.
If you can set up base station controller tracking without a faceplate on the reverb g2 why cant you do it with the vive cosmos? They want something like $300 on the cosmos for a faceplate to use for tracking. Why doesnt the g2 need that?
So, if the controllers aren't completely up to par, but the res and image is fantastic, then later on as our computers become more powerful, and we purchase different controllers - should I expect this to be a reasonably well future proofed unit ? Purchased almost exclusively for msfs2020.
So it's mostly a question of whether your setup is correct or not. Thanks for the video! :) I'll use the G2 for sims first and everything else second. Means I can live with these minor tracking issues.
With your recommendations on the G2 I decided to pull the trigger and order one. Now that I have it, I can confirm that the headset has the best visual quality of any VR set by a pretty wide margin. However, I am seriously disappointed in the controllers and consider them to be a huge downgrade from my first gen Rift system. They really needed another camera looking down because any time I drop my hands to me waist, tracking is lost - this is especially noticeable in sword and saber based games - tracking reestablishes immediately but it's very immersion breaking. The controllers are also flimsy, lightweight and use very cheap materials. The buttons are of the snap action type too, which are very cheap feeling and don't have a smooth action. The windows and menu buttons are also easily pressed by accident due to their position and recessed amount. I find myself failing Beat Saber all the time because the buttons are so easy to accidentally press. The controllers also don't feel very ergonomic...something just feels off, like I have to physically reach to hit buttons. I really HATED my rift, but I will say that those controllers were much, MUCH better quality than my G2, which is a damn shame considering their pricepoints. All in, I wouldn't recommend the G2 unless they revise the controllers. It's also the a pain that numerous games only partially support the G2, so fully expect to need community controller bindings and configurations because nobody is updating their games to work with the G2. My advice is to save a bit more and get an index, it's a much better system all together.
yes the tracking is bad and the controller are cheap but i ordered knuckles controllers. the headset himself is awesome. oculus do a better job with 4 camera they have just a better positioning and better algorithm
@@astroreflux fortunately I do, been wanting to upgrade for sometime so I can give my o+ to my friend. Greatly appreciate the input, might consider saving some bucks with the q2 but zuckkkkk
What this video has shown me is that this is a non-issue. I had similar limitations on my Rift-S. The tracking seems totally fine, especially given you'll almost always be moving in-game.
Have the reverb g2 3 days and have 1 big problem, I become sick I believe you call it motion sickness, I must admit I only run it on a 1060 gtx and it seems it do the job, but after a few games like onward and Il2 I am dizzy and almost wanne trow up, it takes me a few hours sleep and a asperine to recover, what do you think?
Hmm, that does sound like motion sickness. I believe because you only have 1060 your G2 runs in 60hz mode. That makes you sick. You need a beefier gpu then you will feel better because games will run in 90hz.
So it seems like infrared is better option, so just curiosity, why did they choose leds? cheaper? easier hardware engineering? less temperature and battery stress?
My son already has 20 hours in Beat Saber with the G2 with no problems. When the batteries get down under 7% the tracking starts to mess up a little. Only tracking issues I have seen is with my hands at my side, other than that the tracking is fine. If they would have went with IR instead, I think it would have been better for the people having problems. What to do with bad tracking: Make sure you use a eyeglass cloth and clean all lens and cameras. Smudges on the cameras from your fingers can mess it up. Make sure you have enough lighting, but not too much. Four 40 watt bulbs seem fine, so no more than 1800-2000 lumens. Make sure there are no clear LED light bulbs around, because they also can mess it up. Make sure there are no mirrors or super reflective pictures on the walls. Make sure there are no open blinds on windows with sunlight coming in. Make sure you use better batteries like Duracell Optimums or rechargeables at 1.5v or higher. PKCELL work great and they are 1.6v. This is everything I learned from using the O+ and it seems to still work with the G2. Can't think of anything else.
I'll take "tracking that is a smidge worse and not really that bad" with being locked into an /active/ facebook account any day. But yknow, a bit more money and you get the best part of the index, and you end up paying about the same amount of money ;3
Awesome info, thanks! and... damn! Why are all the VR companies fuxing up their products in one or more ways, forcing customers to compromise =( If I'm going to have to compromise, then I'm: a) Going to go for the cheapest option. b) That doesn't have a major shortcoming. At this point, that seems to be the Quest 2. A conclusion I find to be incredibly frustrating, as it isn't really a product primarily targeted at the PC-centric VR experience. Maybe I'll just wait through yet another generation of VR :(
Different design decisions come with different trade offs. Improving one thing, map make another thing worse. For example you could increase the headset's FoV, but that causes resolution to go down.
Good video mate. I was the one who asked you about the bowling game. Thanks for clarifying that about the bowling motion. I am glad that it tracks fine.
I notice that most of your lights are pointing away or against the wall in your video. Do you have any light sources that are direct in your place space? I wonder if saturating the play space with a moderate amount of indirect light is the key to success? I also am curious if different types of light sources (LED, Flourescent, etc.) or different spectrums (3000k, 5000k, etc) could be a factor. This clarification video was great and I hope it resolves issues for some users struggling with the tracking. I am still waiting on my G2 to arrive.
Great work as usual. Loving the clarity of my g-2. It's like my O+ only better. My right speaker is rattling with any base and I'm waiting to see when they will send out a replacement but its definitely not going back like the cosmos did.
@@ComdrStew I took it off and checked the pins and it sounds blown or a piece of plastic is rattling inside it. Left one sounds fine. I keep the volume round 70%. Still usable just blatty with low pitch sounds that repeat.
Hi Dmacell, thanks for your comment! Try unscrewing the right speaker and screwing it back on, perhaps the pogo pin connection is not great? But if it does not work, do RMA! Glad you are here and hope you stay tuned!
@MRTV Do you think some of the UA-camrs with issues may be using 1.2v instead of 1.5v batteries in the controllers? I've bought some 1.5v li-ion for mine. My G2 should be turning up in 1 week.
Ive had a Lenovo Explorer for a couple of years and the tracking was perfectly fine for me. Only noticeable tracking losses I had were when the batteries were close to dying or when I had the controller really close to my face. I mainly played in my main living room at night with just the regular light on. Tracking is fine so I'm hoping the G2 with the 2 extra cameras would be BETTER than my Explorer. Just waiting for it to come now :)
hi Sebastian, im not sure whether the bluetooth signal also play parts on the stability of the tracking in this HP Reverb G2, but i noticed that in my first generation of HP MR, when i connected several devices to my PC bluetooth at the same time, eg: gamepad, headset, mouse, keyboard .. the controllers were stuttering, so aiming/pointing were terrible. but when i reduced the number of devices connected to my PC bluetooth, the controllers tracking were getting better significantly.
Yes, the WMR help page offers this same advice! I was going to try this today as I had some trouble with my G2 controllers yesterday, but played Half Life Alyx today for a couple hours without incident. Now I am thinking the possible culprit yesterday was that my television was on and in the field of view of my HMD cameras...
How good will the G2 work on a 5700 XT? I planned to upgrade the gfx card but since the prices are so insane I just won't and what I have will have to do.
Great information as always. Thanks for covering the shortcomings as well as what you obviously like about it. It's not worth it for me, and it's a real shame because I really wanted it to replace my Rift S. But for the money you're paying for it, I don't think all these tips and adjustments should be necessary to get a good experience. I live in a rented property and probably not for long, I can't put anything on the walls and I'm not going to pay for blinds to be installed in someone else's house. Installing things into the walls was why I decided against lighthouses in the first place. This shouldn't be necessary and it isn't with other headsets for a good experience. Really disappointing but oh well, it's only a VR headset, it's not essential so I'll wait for one that meets my requirements! Thanks again!
I just got the Reverb G2 and the tracking is ok but very not ok when it comes to games like Paddle up or Eleven, little sad. It was much better with the rift. For many shooters and other games I guess it will be fine. But for these racket sport games and maybe all of them these doesn't cut it.
Here is how I solved my issue with Reverb G2 trackers that were so shaky while in VR: connect the external antenna of my desktop PC's motherboard. I thought it was only useful for wifi and since I am connected with ethernet I did not bother connecting the antenna, but it actually enhanced the bluetooth as well. Now this is perfect for Beat saber or Halflife Alyx at least. Another issue I had was the G2 headset getting regularly disconnected then reconnected from windows => I disconnected all the unnecessary equipments from USB plugs in keeping keyboard and mouse only. Hope this can help users for troubleshooting.
i havve a Rift CV1 and a Rift S and two WMR headset Dell and HP,and i have had a terrible time with tracking i have tried different brands of batteries three different Bluetooth adapters in different ports different lights i have no mirrors around i unplugged my rift sensors in case and even uninstalled it,But after a few minutes the motion controllers always get stuck in place and you after turn them off and on again to regain tracking,i have given up after 3 months and chucked them in the cupboard
how do we get the youtube vr 360 hd videos to be clearer in the g2? do we need to download them ? they appear as low resolution and not crystal clear. i have a high res windows pc using mix reality and steam. also 1080 ti. and 1 gig internet. thanks ,tom
I think you make false review and play with your subscribers money. You get paid by hp to blame the customers for "not using the headset right" instead of blaming hp for a shitty tracking development . In addition if the g2 works with only a small variety of batteries why the hell hp won't supply them too?! 599$ is too much for that scam. Yeah, its sharp and vibrant, but that's it, not even a google cardboard killer.
I have a G1 and the tracking is totaly acceptable for me. After the last Windows update it is better. I have a Quest 2 and a Reverb G1 and I play with the G1 because the screen is so mutch better than Q2 Link and the tracking not too bad. Anyway I cant play biliard in Sport bar 2 with the Quest 2 because the cameras not see the controler in the necessary pos. Maybe with the G2 the biliard is playable? The side cameras maybe enough for that.
Why on earth would they use visible LEDs instead of infrared ones? I'm guessing there has to be a good reason. The inside out tracking doesn't work with IR cameras?
I don't understand how someone can find this acceptable on a 600 dollar headset, its 2020, they had years to figure out where to put cameras and fix tracking...This is what stops me from upgrading form a CV1...looking at this compared to a 3 camera setup is a joke, hell its even a joke coming from a S or Quest 1/2 and those cost 300-400, all this has going for it is the screen...like holy crap HP/MS get your shit together, good video though...I'll wait another year or two.
Yeah it's like they put all the focus into the headset. Surely they should have worked out infrared is the way forwards both for reliability and battery life? That said if nothing else is around at the time, as someone who uses VR mainly for racing I'd be happy with the G2 and no controllers (already have knuckles+base stations + 5K Plus). If you're willing to sell your soul to FaceBook the Quest 2 plus Virtual Desktop and acceptable latency for PC gaming is very very tempting.
@@Space-O-2001 i wonder if facebook/oculus have patents with inside out i/r tracking that prevented hp going that route.. shit it might have even prohibited them using capacitive touch buttons?
@@dutchiedutchie3367 Yeah possibly. I think the core thing that all OEMs need to remember is that mass adoption for the sector must be the key focus (not squabbling over you own little corner/eco-system) so if you can swap and change any bit of hardware with ease and at low cost (yes you can get the Knuckles to work with the G2 but it's not a cheap out of the box solution) then everyone will benefit. For example how many people are going to pass on the G2 because the controllers are naff (not awful but well below par for this generation). How many people can be arsed to get alternatives working with the G2. Too much barrier to entry means this will always be a super nerd pastime (even though it's not hard to set up) and scumbags like FaceBook will succeed (they are already buying the market space.
@@GoldSrc_ Interesting, although unless you're making a direct copy of something patents can be worked around (not saying that in this case it's applicable)
Hi Sebastian. I would add a piece of advice for the ones who experience controller glitching with WMR headsets: "Try to switch off all of nearby bluetooth devices like headphones or even a smartphone, because they could interfere with the controller tracking."
Thank you Pedro, glad you enjoyed this!! Yes, simply needed to make this video to shed some light on the G2 tracking and the different kind of experiences!
I'm spoiled by lighthouses. I'm so used to that level of tracking that using the G2 controllers while my knuckles are being replaced has been too painful. I have to take my beat saber down a difficulty because I'm used to my regular wild movements and being on VRChat, the act of having my hands at my sides causes it to lose tracking and I have to remember I have to look down every so often to remind my headset where they hands are. I feel like it wouldn't be nearly as bad if any cameras were just looking down. It feels like there's a really wide horizontal field of view in the revision, but vertically you have to have your controllers are chest height to get a proper detection, and so many games want you to reach to something on your belt.
will the tracking be good enough to play half life alyx when you put in / take out ammo from your backpack?. or in pavlov where you have get a new ammo clip from your belt?
There's no camera looking down where your resting position is. Ring placement: bolt actions you'll be slapping plastic. Cigars and beverages pokerVR you'll be hitting your headset and dropping cigars. Index knuckles are on order. Using my riftS with a drifting controller is still better for now.
Something I have noticed is that seb uses NiZn batteries. These are actually putting out 1.65v, I assume then they are in series which would mean an extra 0.3v (10%) over 1.5v batteries. LEDs will shine quite a bit brighter with higher current, and I assume driving higher voltage will drive higher current. Not sure how tight the voltage regulation is in the controllers - but if the LEDs are brighter this could aid in tracking. Wondering if worthwhile measuring if there is a difference in light output. Was going to go for Li ion - but if NiZn gives more consistent tracking, might just take a punt on these.
I have this headset now, here's my opinion. The controllers are good enough, they barely make it. It looses tracking constantly. I'm used to tracking from CV1, so having to adjust my play style to insure my hands are out in front of me feels awkward. I'm getting used to it, it still works, but man it sucks compared to the CV1. I'm learning from others that have other headsets like Rift S and Quest that these limitations are just things people with inside out tracking have dealt with and apparently oculus has a much better version of inside out tracking. Either way, on a comparative level. The tracking on this unit is terrible in comparison to the CV1. That being said, it still works very well if you don't have an excellent tracking system to compare it to. For FPS games, I don't have much of an issue. If you are the type of player that rests your hand on your chin to steady your gun, this will not work for you, but I guess everyone with inside out tracking knows this and plays differently. To demonstrate the bad tracking, you need to move your hands slowly down to your sides and you will see them lose tracking. This really sucks, and forces you to dip your head consceiously knowing you have to keep your hands at an awkward position to the HMD.
x570 chipset folks check for motherboard BIOS updates -- the 2702 BIOS for the ASUS Crosshair Hero VIII from the other day has apparently fixed the G2 connection issues.
1. I always play with a gunstock from ProtubeVR, so my controllers are always at the same distance of my headset, making sure I don’t accidentally bring them too close to my head(and of course improved accuracy to freehanding)
2. I tried using new 1,5V regular AA batteries(cheap brand) and had quite some tracking issues. Switched to my 1,2V recheargable high quality AA batteries and not a single hiccup
3. I can’t keep my hands all the way down next to my body to run, cause after a few seconds that the cameras don’t see the controllers, it’ll freeze and directions won’t work correctly anymore, so I keep my hands a little in front of me so cameras can capt at all time

Waiting for my reverb... this was the video i needed to reassure me. Thanks!
You are welcome!
I just "felt" a little better.. the thing is that with the batts I had
random hands drifting way off in the distance for seconds on end and that had stopped along with the stuttering of tracked movements within the movements of arms reach.
No youtuber seems to have quantified how bad the tracking was.
tl;dr
I really wish there was a bottom and top cameras. That's what botters me the most when playing Beat saber with my Odyssey+.
It would even be good enough if they just changed the camera positions to the edges of the headset, like Quest.
@@mixedrealityTV oculus has patented everything, maybe even camera positions? :DD
@@Gregoses yep most likely
@@Gregoses It's either that or Microsoft is lazy and doesn't change camera placement because they would have to alter the tracking algorithm.
I know😪
I have now owned my G2 for one week.
Just got my G2 today, and it's tracking the controllers flawlessly. Very happy with it! And I ordered a Frankenfov mod right away.
Ive had mine for a little under a couple of weeks now and I have no problems with the G2 Tracking. I love the overall performance of the G2 and the biggest thing for me is the image. It's now longer just wow - its WOWWWWWWWWWWWWW .......
YES, it really is....wow! :) Glad that you enjoy the headset!
@ I just got mine today and I'm in the US. I ordered August 5th (jeez that was a long wait, now that I think about it).
@ I got mine yesterday and I'm in New Zealand, pre ordered it on September 15th.
@ Australia my friend. 😊 hope you have yours soon.
This is excellent and clearly shows the tracking is not going to be an issue for most games, nice!
@@mixedrealityTV Cheers Seb looking forward to it 🍻😊
@@LightningAussie Let me guess.
@@samik83 it doesn't compare well to Quest 2 mate.
Good analysis and proof that it works behind your back with the motion sensors. I couldn't believe they made a faulty product, and appearently the didn't. Thank you very much. I find this acceptable together with the lighting explanation.
Glad this could help you!
Thanks for the insights. I was getting worried based on those other reviews, but you did a wonderful job of explaining and showing how to make things work properly
Outstanding analysis. Informative and fair and balanced
Thanks so much for the rec room example. First good true overview that doesnt just highlight the bad. I ordered of of these on black friday and knowing the tracking isnt as bad as people say and that the screens are better than my quest2 i think ill be very happy with this headset
When I used my G2 the tracking went crazy in onwardVR when my LED lights were on in my room. You cant have LED lighting around the G2
Well...LED lights...like in your controller? :) So yeah, that is definitely better with IR lights!
Ceiling fixture or lamps? I haven't had any non-battery related issues with my Explorer while using LED's in my ceiling.
@@pyroth309 true, Hue lights are reported to be fine with G2 controllers.
You've practically sold me on getting a Reverb G2.
Your content on this has been the best I've seen. Really appreciate it. I might have cancelled my G2 order if I hadn't have seen these videos.
Glad I could provide value to you. I would probably also have canceled my preorder if I had just watched some other channels. Glad you found mine! :)
HI Sebastain, thanks for taking time to make these videos. These were helpful for me who got a G2 recently.
Reflections from mirrors, windows and other glass surfaces can also cause issues.
@@jorkovitz thanks, good to know!
Have fun with potato resolution.
Boyyyy, what you said makes no sense. If you are willing to pay 1k, then get the g2 with the index knuckles controllers. Duh!

Hi Sebastian, what about Robo Recall or games like it when you have weapons in holsters at your side?
Don't feel bad. What good is having good visuals if the controls have issues. Hopefully everything works good for you and fast!

The IMU is great, thanks for this video.
Needs lighthouse or downward facing cameras. Really sucks when you casually hold them at your waist.
It seems like a lot of these issues can be solved with patches :) thanks for the review Sebastian, I hope to buy one soon
Will the tracking work well with Pavlov, beat saber, rec room, half-life Alyx?
Got confirmation tonight that mine has shipped and should be here Wednesday. Finally! 😀
What day did you order?
@@ledwire3784 I think it was August 19
Helpful video, thanks. 👍
Reading articles about the G2 and most would just say the headset tracking is bad, thank you for explaining the "how and why" of the tracking shortcomings.
You are welcome.
Thank you so much, most useful video on the topic!
Thank you for your channel,
Do you think is it possible to use HP Reverb connected on a thunderbolt 3 dock?
Or the output video connexions have chance to block it at 60Hz?
Yea I do VR on a laptop, and till now it's perfect for my use.
Thank you.
Very good video, learned alot how my headset works, thx
If you can set up base station controller tracking without a faceplate on the reverb g2 why cant you do it with the vive cosmos? They want something like $300 on the cosmos for a faceplate to use for tracking. Why doesnt the g2 need that?
So, if the controllers aren't completely up to par, but the res and image is fantastic, then later on as our computers become more powerful, and we purchase different controllers - should I expect this to be a reasonably well future proofed unit ?
Purchased almost exclusively for msfs2020.
This is my plan yes. But you will likely need base stations for future controllers which is a bit shit.
My advice is to save a bit more and get an index, it's a much better system all together.
yes the tracking is bad and the controller are cheap but i ordered knuckles controllers. the headset himself is awesome.
oculus do a better job with 4 camera they have just a better positioning and better algorithm
over 1k hours on my odyssey+ lol, I love shooters and have a great time with my shitty wmr tracking. Can't wait for the g2 to get here !
even with better tracking?
@@astroreflux fortunately I do, been wanting to upgrade for sometime so I can give my o+ to my friend. Greatly appreciate the input, might consider saving some bucks with the q2 but zuckkkkk
Ok but what do you do if the controller randomly get stuck in the air and only rotates?
What this video has shown me is that this is a non-issue. I had similar limitations on my Rift-S. The tracking seems totally fine, especially given you'll almost always be moving in-game.
Hope it will be possible to buy the stand alone headset and save for the knuckles and base stations, or wait another generation.
Nice video Sebastian, as usual. Greetings from Spain.
Thank you!
I am curious to see if there is anyone that received the 'updated' Reverb 2 in October 2021 that supposedly fixes the tracking issue
I will review soon.
So it seems like infrared is better option, so just curiosity, why did they choose leds? cheaper? easier hardware engineering? less temperature and battery stress?
all kinds of overhead lighting works great. HP and MS have also updated the tracking several times since this video was made.
What to do with bad tracking:
Make sure you use a eyeglass cloth and clean all lens and cameras.
Dont forget wireless and standaone capability. Not really an apple to apple comparison there
Please make a video about the wide-spread USB and audio issues.
Awesome info, thanks! and... damn!
Why are all the VR companies fuxing up their products in one or more ways, forcing customers to compromise =(
If I'm going to have to compromise, then I'm:
a) Going to go for the cheapest option.
b) That doesn't have a major shortcoming.
At this point, that seems to be the Quest 2.
A conclusion I find to be incredibly frustrating, as it isn't really a product primarily targeted at the PC-centric VR experience.
Maybe I'll just wait through yet another generation of VR :(
Right, for Quest 2 you always have to keep in mind as well that the company is going to make money with you, selling ads and analyzing how you use VR.
Different design decisions come with different trade offs. Improving one thing, map make another thing worse. For example you could increase the headset's FoV, but that causes resolution to go down.
@@gyroninjamodder they could implement eye tracking and foveated rendering, so even if the panel is 8k it's not gonna use a lot of resources
@@claudio7010 but adding an eye tracker will increase the price of the headset. It's another trade off.
@@gyroninjamodder an eye tracker is just a camera, it shouldn't cost that much
Good video mate. I was the one who asked you about the bowling game. Thanks for clarifying that about the bowling motion. I am glad that it tracks fine.
Cool! And I answered you in a video isn't that sweet?! ;)
@@mixedrealityTV Sure is! :)
Make sure the volume is not louder than 85%, the speakers seem to have overmodulation. If it is still doing it than yeah the speaker is probably bad.
@@dmacell4110 Yeah if you took it off and put it back on it is probably just a bad speaker. Problems of first production units.
@MRTV Do you think some of the UA-camrs with issues may be using 1.2v instead of 1.5v batteries in the controllers? I've bought some 1.5v li-ion for mine. My G2 should be turning up in 1 week.

@Matthew Patents are public knowledge aren't they? Isn't that why companies can't even surprise us cuz we also know they patented it ages ago.

My G2 just arrived with no email or prior notice, ordered August 5th in the US.
Ya, they dont send any kind of notice, that they will be charging your card again or if they shipped. I've had mine a couple weeks now
Did you have to sign for it? I am still waiting on mine.

Thanks a bunch HP - way to rub it in...what about Europe??
It least it suprised you! I'm still waiting fot mine and I pre-ordered it in September from HP Australia and got $200 off.
hi Sebastian, im not sure whether the bluetooth signal also play parts on the stability of the tracking in this HP Reverb G2, but i noticed that in my first generation of HP MR, when i connected several devices to my PC bluetooth at the same time, eg: gamepad, headset, mouse, keyboard .. the controllers were stuttering, so aiming/pointing were terrible. but when i reduced the number of devices connected to my PC bluetooth, the controllers tracking were getting better significantly.
I think you should be fine enough, you 'll probably have to use the half-resolution mode in demanding titles, though.
Can i fix the tracking issue on the reverb controllers by using the htc basestations? Or do i have to buy the index knuckles?
Have to buy Knuckles. But the controller tracking is actually not so bad.
Can we use base stations with the controllers?
i havve a Rift CV1 and a Rift S and two WMR headset Dell and HP,and i have had a terrible time with tracking i have tried different brands of batteries three different Bluetooth adapters in different ports different lights i have no mirrors around i unplugged my rift sensors in case and even uninstalled it,But after a few minutes the motion controllers always get stuck in place and you after turn them off and on again to regain tracking,i have given up after 3 months and chucked them in the cupboard
how do we get the youtube vr 360 hd videos to be clearer in the g2? do we need to download them ? they appear as low resolution and not crystal clear. i have a high res windows pc using mix reality and steam. also 1080 ti. and 1 gig internet. thanks ,tom
360 cameras are pretty crappy unfortunately, it’s not the headset’s fault
IMPORTANT: You need to use 1.5V batteries! I recommend these here: geni.us/Dc0wDk
NiZn Charger: geni.us/NdIy
It's alright, but i hope it could get a bit better with software updates
I think you make false review and play with your subscribers money.
You get paid by hp to blame the customers for "not using the headset right" instead of blaming hp for a shitty tracking development .
In addition if the g2 works with only a small variety of batteries why the hell hp won't supply them too?!
599$ is too much for that scam.
Yeah, its sharp and vibrant, but that's it, not even a google cardboard killer.
Looks fantastic! Thank you Sebastian

Haha, exactly!
Hi Sebastian. I would add a piece of advice for the ones who experience controller glitching with WMR headsets: "Try to switch off all of nearby bluetooth devices like headphones or even a smartphone, because they could interfere with the controller tracking."
Great video. All is clear now regarding G2 tracking. Thanks.
Thank you Pedro, glad you enjoyed this!! Yes, simply needed to make this video to shed some light on the G2 tracking and the different kind of experiences!
I didn’t see the link for how to use the valve index controllers with the G2 in the show notes. Would you be able to supply that? Thank you!
Yes. I made lots of live videos about the tracking, just have a look.
@@mixedrealityTV okay thx :)
Can we get some science involved in this. What is too bright? What is too dark? Can we get a lumens # or something for the best tracking performance?
Go for it....let us know your results
@@oliverarguello6472 when mine arrives I will do the analysis.
There's no camera looking down where your resting position is.
Ring placement: bolt actions you'll be slapping plastic. Cigars and beverages pokerVR you'll be hitting your headset and dropping cigars.
Index knuckles are on order. Using my riftS with a drifting controller is still better for now.
yes the tracking is awful i have knuckles on order too because i love so much the headset.
Was going to go for Li ion - but if NiZn gives more consistent tracking, might just take a punt on these.
pkcells work great for me at1.6v. They last a few weeks for me too on a charge. I used them in my O+ for over a year and bought new ones for th G-2
Good news for us VR lcd Elite Dangerous players! : "Scientists Just Discovered Outer Space Isn't Pitch Black" lol
Thanks a bunch MRTV.
