    I bought a G2 about 2.5 years ago as an upgrade to the Rift S which was my introduction to VR. Prior to getting the Rift I'd been playing DCS on a 65 inch 4k TV with Track IR and having a really great time. Unfortunately, the first time I tried the Rift S flat screen flight simming was spoilt for me forever! The immersion completely trumped the resolution.
    I think I used the Rift S for just over a year. The G2 was a big step up, with none of the screen door effects which I could see in the sky when flying DCS in the Rift S. However, I seem to recall that the sweet spot was a bit smaller on the G2 - despite the higher resolution - and the G2 was certainly not as comfortable as the Rift S. One of the negatives of the G2 was the annoyingly inflexible cable.
    However, I got a great deal of use and enjoyment out of the G2 over two-plus years, and when I invested in a 4090 card around the turn of last year it made a big difference. This was stepping up from a Nvidia 2070 Super with an i7 processor. Prior to getting the 4090 I'd found MSFS unplayable. With the 4090 I was playing DCS with all settings maxed out and felt that the investment in the new GPU was easily justified.
    However, 4 months ago, on the basis that you're a long time dead, I decided to treat myself to a Pimax Crystal. I had considered the Varjo Aero, but the need for base stations was a deal breaker. Having said that, if the Aero price drop had preceded my purchase of the Crystal I might have reconsidered...
    So, I've been using the Crystal for about 2 months now. I suppose the clarity is a step up from the G2, and the colours are richer, but the most important feature for me is the edge to edge clarity. Even in my peripheral vision the image is sharp, and reading instruments in side consoles is easy. The wider FOV is nice and I can more easily access switches at the rear of the consoles and look back over my shoulder much more easily. When I'm making a Case I recovery in an FA18 in DCS and flying past the carrier it's nice and sharply detailed, rather than being the grey blur I'd see in the G2. And since my DCS missions are exclusively A2G, having nicely detailed terrain to the sides, as well as the front, is a huge improvement.
    The chief downside to the Crystal is the lack of comfort. It's just so big and so heavy. If you tighten the strap it's uncomfortable, but if you don't it feels loose all the time. I think I'm going to have to buy an Apache strap, although it annoys me immensely to have to buy 3rd party add-ons because of design flaws in the basic product. I'm a bit miffed that I didn't have the option of buying the "Sim" version of the headset without the controllers. I can't imagine ever playing room scale games in this enormous headset.
    For room scale games I have a Quest 2, but I had to buy two "elite" head straps before I found one which was comfortable. I see that the Quest 3 has been launched with the same wholly inadequate default head strap.
    On the issue of battery life, I rarely play more than 2 hours and the only time I've ever changed the battery was the day it arrived. The installed battery lasted a couple of hours during the (frustrating) installation stage and I then inserted the second battery which I'd put on charge straightaway. That battery has now been in place for two months and always appears to be fully charged. So, from my perspective the battery is merely a counterweight and not something I have to give any other thought to.
    I tried contacting Pimax customer support shortly after getting the headset and waited nearly a month for a reply. So, not impressed in that respect.
    Nor am I impressed by the GUI, which is still confusing after two months of using it. I don't understand how Pimax can be working with testers in the international VR community and not be acting on the recommendations which I'm sure they've had from users.
    So, bottom line: do I regret buying it? No. Might I have been better to get the Aero at the new price? Quite possibly.
    If you have a G2, but not a 4090 card, get the card before buying a new headset. You'll need a 4090 to make the Crystal worthwhile in any case, and getting the new GPU will greatly improve the performance of the G2. Use the G2 for another six months and then see what's available in the premium headset market at that time.

      I’m looking to upgrade from the Q2.. whilst the Crystal/Aero is within my budget I don’t know whether the extra cost is really worth it (considering pretty much everything is an upgrade from the q2!) I have a 4080 and a 13700k, do you think the 4080 would run the Crystal ok? Or is the 4090 necessary?

    • @peterfagan3587
      @peterfagan3587 Рік тому +1

      Well, while I do have a Q2 I've only ever used it for BeatSaber and the much missed Echo Arena. I've never tried it in a PC-VR mode - only standalone.
      As for running a Crystal with a 4080, there's plenty of reports of people doing this successfully, but I've found that even with my 4090 card I've had to dial back some of the settings when flying in the new Sinai map. I think I might be inclined to recommend you look for a good deal on a used G2 for the moment, rather than committing to either the Crystal or the Aero just yet. Having said that, a guick Google suggests that even second-hand G2s are still commanding a pretty high price.
      However, by that same token, you could try a G2 for a while and then unload it after a few months without losing much. They do seem to be holding their value, even with the reduced pricing of both the Aero and the Crystal.

    I've also had my G2 since release. I have used it so much that my headband broke where the speaker connects. I bought a Quest 1 headband and just shaved down the front curve on it, it works great and it has a adjustment knob on the back. I actually think the Aero is probably the best buy now. It has all the same stuff as the Crystal, plus active cooling, 200Hz eye tracking instead of 120Hz, best build quality of any headsets, no battery BS, and the best customer service of any other headset.

    • @VRLowdown
      @VRLowdown  Рік тому +2

      It's def the best option for some. External tracking and no integrated audio are the two downsides for me.

    • @rawdmon
      @rawdmon Рік тому

      The Crystal has significantly better vertical fov, better lenses, dynamic backlight dimming, inside out tracking, and wireless (60ghz wigig) PCVR streaming on the way later this year. 120hz eye tracking vs 200hz makes no discernible difference to dynamic foveated rendering or anything else that would be using the eye tracking so that's really a moot point. The Crystal has excellent integrated audio, can upgrade to DMAS off-ear audio for $99. The Crystal also has an optional hand tracking module which is pretty darn cool (I ordered one, I plan to use it while flight simming). The Crystal does have a couple of fans in it for active cooling but they are more to cool the components than to actually vent the headset, I would have liked to see active venting in it. The Aero is a damn nice headset for sure but the Crystal has enough advantages that I personally decided to get it instead of the Aero. It just feels like a more future-proof device in terms of evolving features and the ability to operate stand-alone for wireless streaming. I also don't personally want to deal with steamvr base stations for tracking (been there, done that, with the original oculus cv1 headset), I'd rather just rely on inside-out tracking. The Aero has also been discontinued at this point.

    I love my G2 - it was my first VR headset. I am convinced, based on lots of reading, that it's still the best buy for the price, and a great first headset for anyone who wants to get into PC VR, especially sims such as flying or racing. I couldn't care less, at least right now, about stand-alone VR games - I sit and fly planes. That said, I ordered a Vargo Aero now that the price dropped, just to try something else, especially something outside of the WMR ecosystem. I play mostly DCS and some MSFS and do experience stuttering and some odd behavior with the G2. Sometimes I have to re-start games a couple of times or the headset updates at 2-3 FPS. And, this is with a 13900K and a 4090. But, once it's loaded and running it works great and I can play for hours without issue.

    Nice review, thank you for this. Happy Reverb G2 owner, I have been contemplating on getting Pimax Crystal for a while. I play exclusively flight sims, DCS about 80% of the time and MSFS other 20%. Used to play other VR games with previous Oculus Rift S, but not anymore.
    I enjoy everything with G2, apart from the limited field of vision. It's not a big issue when flying alone, but when you have to do formation flying or go into occasional dogfights, that does become somewhat of a problem. Clarify is generally sufficient. After seeing your review where you mentioned that the FOV increase in Crystal is good, but not substantial, and the comfort level is less than in G2, I'm beginning to have second thoughts. Since my sim sessions are often 3+ hours, the comfort is quite important, and I'm not sure I'd enjoy having such a bulky thing on my face for hours in a row.
    Additionally the price of Crystal is steep. Very steep. It might be reasonable in USA, but once you get this delivered to Northern Europe, you're effectively paying around $2000 with taxes. So given all the pro's and con's I think I am going to skip the Crystal and see how does the hardware develop in the next generation.

      @VRLowdown  Рік тому +1

      This sounds like a pretty sensible plan. Crystal does a lot right, but it does have drawbacks. I def feel the FOV could be better. It doesn't really feel much bigger than Quest 3. Although I wouldn't describe it as being a comfortable headset, I'm doing regular multi-hour sessions in it without too many comfort issues. Not great for active roomscale activities though.

    Have had the G2 for about 2 years now. For me it’s still good enough to hold me over a bit longer. My next headset needs to last at least a few years. Oled, pancake lenses, integrated tracking, eye tracking and not weigh a ton. Budget is really not an issue but I’m not going to spend 2-3 thousand bucks on something that doesn’t tick all boxes. I feel we’re getting close to a solid VR standard quality where tech will plateau for a bit. Looks like Varjo is getting there if they can increase their FOV and add inside out tracking. Lots of new players and smaller form factors getting to the market soon so soon we’ll have more options.

    Great video, and that's coming from someone who is struggling to decide whether to "upgrade" to the Pimax from a G2. While money and time are no object (I'm a longtime retiree, widowed, kids grown, etc), the real problem is I know in my heart I'm just hoping it'll do something that has nothing to do with visual clarity, fit and weight or PC power (I have a PC built around the RTX 4090). It has everything to do with hoping it'll inject some fun into flight simming, a hobby with which I'm starting to get really bored.

    Interesting as I own a G2 and did consider a Pimax. In the end I didn't get one becasue I wanted to get back into mainstream VR. I'm a simmer though and use my G2 for MSFS, the trouble is I just use my G2 for MSFS and I think that's because of the lack of an eco system. Before the G2 I owned the equally comfortable Oculus Rift CV1 and I played all sorts of games from the Oculus PC Store, it was amazing fun. I can access these games on the Reverb but it's a pain. Anyway I've bought the Quest 3 and if my hunch is correct, then that headset will offer PCVR performance superior to the HP Reverb G2 even without the DP cable. Guy Godin has stated it's the best wireless headset out there by far so I'm confortable this will be great for simming and great to get me back into the Quest games and mixed reality experiences for a price £619 - 100 pounds cheaper than HP Reverb G2 £719 in the UK at least. So I strong disagree you should get the G2 today and I would seriously consider waiting for the Pico 5 (April 2024) or have a look at the Quest 3 (October 10).

    • @VRLowdown
      @VRLowdown  Рік тому +2

      I can't disagree with your logic. I hadn't realised the Reverb G2 had got so expensive! I'd agree that the Quest 3 should provide visuals at least on a par with HP Reverb G2, and I really do love wireless headsets. I don't tend to be overly bothered by the decreased image quality when streaming wirelessly, but I know that some people are. I'll have the Quest 3 next week so I'll be able to test them head to head.
      The Pico 5 is looking very promising, certainly the rumoured Pro model, but Pico are still lagging behind in a few areas, so I'll need to test it out thoroughly before passing judgement. Really appreciate the comment.

      My guess here is that very few games were tested for this review so that little software tweaking was necessary, as the Pimax software has gotten vastly worse over the past couple of years. They have implemented 'features' that make Pimax frame generation unusable (it will auto-switch to a 1/3 framerate mode) and simultaneously reduced performance (Pimax Client has significantly worse performance than PiTool.) It's a shame, because the wide FOV and overall clarity of Pimax HMDs is so good (8K-X user myself), but their software has become so, so terrible that I couldn't in good-faith recommend their products at this point.

    I just do racing sims with G2 and run a very nice 4090 PC. Had the Quest 2 prior (different PC) and yes, it’s huge jump from that. However, I’ve found WMR a pain in the ass with it’s glitchy Win + Y, and the cable…lord. I’m on my third cable and contacted HP to see about a back-up as it will inevitably go haywire at some point (those that experienced it know it can work one day, and not the next, then work again the next….if lucky). HP quoted me $179 US for a new cable. Not happening….feels like throwing good money after bad at this point, especially since HP discontinued their VR. Also, one of the off-ear headphones is constantly glitching needing me to move it to resume playing. I’ve re-attached a few times. So, that brings me to looking at comparisons like this for the next headset. I’m considering the Quest 3 because from what I read it’s pretty equal with visuals to the G2, without the headaches. Or there are the step ups. The Pimax Crystal is just too darn bulky, and I see it being outdated in no time because of that size. Bigscreen Beyond looks good except the need for base stations which jacks the price. I’ll likely go with the Quest 3 as I’ve been pretty happy with the visuals of the G2 and hear Q3 is similar. But do appreciate this comparison.

      I share your frustrations with the HP Reverb G2. Also concerning that WMR is being abandoned. Visual clarity of Quest 3 is about the same as G2, but much larger sweet spot and better lenses. I used G2 since it came out but I've hardly touched it since I got Quest 3. If you're ready for a new headset, it's very easy to recommend Quest 3, particularly when you compare the price to some other competing PCVR headsets.

      So I did order a fourth cable for the G2 (got better price than HP so will see if it works). AND, I took the plunge and bought the Quest 3. Still playing with settings. Where it is today is the image is more stable with the G2. The Q3 works well, and the image is about on par with the G2 but a much larger sweet spot..as in whole screen). The overall color is deeper and better on the G2, but just a little. As mentioned still going over settings but today the image is more stable with the G2, likely do to motion smoothing turned on in the SteamVR settings. Can’t recall seeing that option when connected to the Quest. Haven’t had as much success with wireless though it does work. I just find the cable a better way to connect since I’m not moving around with sim. When I do back to back I find the G2 is a bit better for sims as of now. Will update if I can get settings better. Side note, really enjoying the Q3 and it will be a great back-up for sims if and when needed, but it is a really great stand-alone with PC (HLAlex) or in the Meta verse of games. Glad I got it.

    Haha...that horizontal banding though on your Crystal......I've seen those and other complaints including the software firmware problems..It seems PiMax has regressed to the 4K days and that I can tell you from personal experience was completely draining.

    • @VRLowdown
      @VRLowdown  Рік тому

      The banding only appears as the through the lens video was done with my phone. There's no banding in the actual headset.

    The Reverb G2 has a higher latency than other headsets, and that is something that no review I have ever seen talks about. After purchasing and using it I immediately noticed this and had to return it because for me that's an absolutely unacceptable quality.

      @VRLowdown  Рік тому +1

      I've never actually noticed this before. I'll have to do some testing. I think some people are very sensitive to latency. I don't seem to be.

    Not to metion the Reverb G2 can often be had for a massive discount these days. I got mine last Christmas for $300. At $600 its a tough call, mostly because the Windows Mixed Reality software sucks, and also due to the existance of the Quest 3 now. The existance of the Quest 3 makes this a much harder choice even if you can get the G2 for $300. I haven't tried the Quest 3 yet, but from what I understand the G2 wins just barely in clarity, but it makes up for it in FOV, Pancake lenses, versatility, portability, etc. I'll be getting the Quest 3 for Christmas, so it will be interesting to see if it will retire both my Quest 2 and G2, or just the Quest 2.

    • @VRLowdown
      @VRLowdown  Рік тому

      Ive def seen the G2 on sale multiple times for huge discounts. Potentially a great way to get into VR without spending a fortune. However, I'm not even sure the G2 wins on clarity compared to Quest 3. Most things about Quest 3 are better.

    I was so certain I was getting a crystal, but gosh darn it do i hear so many bad things about it. I have the first reverb, and WANT to get a new headset... i am unsure I can justify it based on all thr negativity.

      It's really hard to advise. My experience has been very good. No technical issues so far. The only things are the compromises in terms of the size, weight and comfort, although these don't particularly bother me, as I only really use the Crystal for seated PCVR games.

    Pimax Crystal = Buyer be Ware: I have had so much trouble with the Pimax, having firstly wated 2 moths for delivery when I was assured one month, now the set won’t work properly despite having spent many hours of my own time and almost a full day with a Pimax technician remote and still no results. Further it is plain to see that the product is very cheaply constructed, clips a very week and with continued use this will lead to quick degradation and product failure. Pimax has added a lot of feature into this device, remember if it sounds to good to be true it usually is, lots of things to go wrong.

    VR, I find it so odd that your G2 video is so UNCLEAR yet your words are referencing very good clarity. I feel like I'm looking through a fish tank. Is it just an odd thing I'm seeing about the video capture and upload to UA-cam? Because, honestly, if that's as good as the G2 is, I'm calling it a hard pass. Thanks for an informative session!

    • @VRLowdown
      @VRLowdown  Рік тому +1

      I should clarify that this is only a issue with the quality of my through the lens footage. I was using my phone to capture the G2 video, and I couldn't get the camera right up to the lens, so it's shot at a bit of an angle and the quality is very poor. I'm just starting out doing videos on UA-cam, so my equipment is a bit rough and ready. In reality, the G2 is extremely clear, but the small sweet spot and lower FOV are issues.

    HP's Customer Service is easily the worst I've ever encountered in any walk of life. When my G2 suffered the common fault when it got warm of the lenses failing in turn for 10-20 seconds they simply refused to answer any of my efforts to get this resolved. They're a disgrace.

    • @dtrjones
      @dtrjones Рік тому +1

      Hmmm @@4sadas I know what you are talking about. Barral distortion, so Steam says you need 1.7 times the resolution. It's garbage, I've never seen an improvement which is worth sacrificing that level of performance, it's still blurry from the center out. You can get pretty good results with much lower values, like x1.2 or x1.3. I used a G2 in MSFS with a 2080 Ti for years and always had a great time.

      What's even more bizare is the Quest 3 is 100 pounds cheaper than the Reverb G2 and is superior is almost every aspect apart fron audio and the big one being the Dp connection. Although the headset does feature better audio than the Q2 and has a more powerful XR2 Gen 2 processor which will greatly mitigate any visuals from the compression, especially if you have a strong graphics card in your PC. You can also play wirelessly, even for PCVR, that's a pretty liberating experience to play games in. Ordered 2 512GB Quest 3's already!
