  • Since Mum and Dad have been 'locked down' with us, I got to take Mum for a picnic on Mother's Day. We flew the Ercoupe to Placerville in the evening, and just about made it home before dark. Placerville is short 36NM trip South East of Nevada County Airport, taking about 24 minutes.

    Very nice to be able to fly your mum for a combined Mothers Day and birthday flight. As you know our Mothering Sunday here in the UK is back in March. I was never able to fly my mum before she died but I have flown my father who is now 90. Looked like a lovely dusk flight. Good one James, well done! 🙂 👍 🇬🇧 Tim

    I had to keep reminding myself that you were taking you mum on a Mother’s Day & Birthday flight. It’s funny to listen to you mum & Diane laugh. I don’t know if you noticed but to me they both have the same laugh! I wonder if this is by chance or happenstance! Lol... To me they are both lovely ladies and enjoy listening to both of their comments while you fly them around. Also they both have a excellent educated understanding of life around them whether it’s people, animal or plants they seamed to have a complete grasp and respect of all things living. It’s amazing what an education does for people perspectives on the world around them. Keep the videos coming James I’m just sorry for being late to this chapter due to life getting in the way of my viewing of your postings.. Cheers James, and say hello to Charles & Diane for me Sir. Take care

      James Good - it’s been awhile and I needed to catchup on your adventures and it was nice to see your Mum and her special day. My Mum would never fly with me because she was afraid of small aircraft. She remembered PSA Flight 182 that collide over San Diego where we lived and the devastating effect it had on her. She was about 1-1/2 miles away when both aircraft came down and she was stuck in the middle of the debris field. It was pretty horrific for her. I was flying for the Navy back then and she always worried about me. My sister flew for TWA as a flight attendant at that same time so we worried my Mum everyday and every time there was an incident our phones would ring asking about information. Our phones would ring all the time. Fly safe James

    You make such lovely and relaxing flight videos; of course your beautifully polished aircraft and the california countryside only help. These videos always inspire me to take my tomahawk up for a spin. Now one thing: Did you raid a Swiss arsenal? that blanket reminded me an awful lot of my service days ;-)

    Nice trip to honor Mother - more good scenery. Those power lines make a very long crossing - almost seems too much for cables to tolerate!
    Looked like an ideal day... nice spot for a picnic and good memories for a summer day. Light sure got pretty low for easy VFR.

      Yes Chris, I wonder how they got the cables across? Big helicopter, I suppose, one at a time? Clever stuff!

    Awesome way to show your Mom you love her. My wife and I flew our Cherokee to your airport KGOO and had a picnic on the benches near the terminal building on May 9th earlier in the day. LOL its a small world. BTW: Great flight and video!

      That's cool! There's a nice picnic table near ramp 4 too, which is quite nice.

    The right gear looks to be loose. I thought it might be the camera but if it was I would expect the wheel to wiggle all the time but it doesn't. It only wiggles side to side when you are level and not when banked which is exactly what one would expect of a loose landing gear strut. I'd watch those parts of the video a bit James and decide if I needed to put her on jacks and have a better look.

      Yes, good eye. I had noticed that from an earlier video, and will indeed be putting it up on jacks and checking them out.

    Nice little flight. Ya know, I am from South Texas, when I go back to visit, my accent comes back quickly. I noticed that with your Mom, your accent also becomes a little more pronounced. A funny thing. I am going to try that tail mount and see if I eliminate the vibration I experienced on the wingtip. Wondering If I had it too far out? Also another question, I like your instrument lighting. Are those built into the instruments themselves ? Fun to see the evening landing.

    • @JamesGood
      @JamesGood  4 роки тому

      Hey Joe. The instrument lighting its aftermarket, little led post lights. Strange about the wing tip vibration. I bet the GoPro Hero 8 stabilization would get rid of it. But the 3 was also OK most of the time for me. Interesting!

    I was concerned when your checklist went "full rich" on your mixture with a density altitude of 5,100 ft. Per the FAA:
    "At power settings of less than 75 percent, or at density altitude above 5,000 feet, it is also essential to lean normally aspirated engines for maximum power on takeoff (unless the aircraft is equipped with an automatic altitude
    mixture control). Otherwise, the excessively rich mixture is another detriment to overall performance."

    • @JamesGood
      @JamesGood  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks Bob. The videos are edited, and don't always show the whole story. My checklist states, 'Mixture Rich', but that never involves me putting it to full rich at my local altitudes.

    • @HugoHugunin
      @HugoHugunin 4 роки тому

      @@JamesGood to minimize the risk of a partial power take-off, a more appropriate call-out might be something like "Mixture - Set"? When I had to get checked out for high country flying, my instructor had me do some take-offs with, and without leaning. I was gobsmaked at the difference in performance. He taught me that once I had leaned the engine for best power during run-up, that I wouldn't touch the mixture until additional leaning was required once at altitude or for engine cooling if required.

    I realize you don't have flaps, but your approach is real shallow. If your engine would fail for any reason, you'd be in the trees!!!

    • @JamesGood

      This has been commented on before. I believe the wide angle lens makes it look shallower than it is. I often land without power, and the coupe is not known for a good glide angle!
