Best 5.56 not an AR is SIG 550. Standard rifle of Swiss Armed Forces. Easily beats any AR in accuracy, stability and handling. Also I missed Kel-Tec RDB in your list.
I own a scar 16, I've never had a malfunction and I shoot the shit out of it. Malfunctions happen from crap ammo and cheap mags. Army m4s and m16s constantly malfunction, it sucks
Yes the scar 16 is overpriced... For a crappy trigger, A2 pistol grip and plastic and aluminum construction...I don’t hate the 16s but when you think about it there is no “service rifle” today built like the 550 with the exception of possibly the swedish AK-5 It terms of reliability of course you can break extractors and piston assembly springs just like any other Piston operated rifle. I’ve never heard of the 550/551 having reliability issues for over 20 years.... remember it’s basically just a refined AK operating system. The shorter 552/553 can have short stroking issues if you use underpowered ammo which can be remedied by adjusting the gas valve. I agree it should not be on this list because the average dumbass Wants the popular rifles The SIG SAN 55X series of rifles should be on a list of “best made” service rifles. I challenge anyone break one down and disagree... Yes built better than HKs even HK admitted in rifle trials the the 55X is a superior weapon in every way except cost.
So ein Quatsch die beste Waffe ist die StG 77 alles was Steyr an Waffen baut ist der Hammer. Es gibt kein Gewehr das mich glücklicher und sicherer macht.
I replaced my ar with a norinco type 97 gen2 flat top and I’ll never look back. Super quick to shoulder. 1/2” shorter than my 10.5” ar and still has 18.5” barrel. (Canada) can be easily shot one handed it so well balanced. And biggest perk for us Canadians is the non restricted tag.
Seems like if you want an AR but not an AR you gotta pay so much extra for it and invite a lot of potential proprietary/compatibility issues. I think it's better to just get an AR.
Some people also do not like a DGI (direct gas impingement) firearm. It is not reliable, as no firearm designed to inject combustion gas and carbon from the round directly into its chamber ever could be. Put a couple hundred rounds through it, do not clean it, let it sit for a month, and then try it again. You'll come into issues, but many other semi auto designs will not. In combat, you can't always keep your rifle meticulously clean and well lubricated between usage, this was proven in July of 2007 in the U.S. Army's limited competition between the M4 carbine, FN SCAR, HK416, the Robinson XCR (which was disqualified on a technicality), and the HK XM8. Each weapon fired 6,000 rounds in an extreme dust environment, with the XM8 scoring the best, with only 127 stoppages in 60,000 total rounds, the FN SCAR Light had 226 stoppages, while the HK416 had 233 stoppages. The M4 carbine scored "significantly worse" than the rest of the field with 882 stoppages. Gas piston, as well as other designs like H&K's older delayed blowback roller lock, are infinitely more reliable in the field and under adverse conditions. DGI is a poor design choice for anything except a range toy.
some people will pay that extra price for something exotic. also by buying an AR you're just perpetuating the AR circlejerk that's preventing other designs from entering the market. they're fine guns but I don't want to live in a world where you can only get one gun that's not prohibitively expensive
Exactly Jacob. People like Wendell don't understand this whatsoever. You have a platform that has been out for almost 60 years, hundreds of companies producing them to the point where you can pick one up for $400, yet they compare new designs to the AR and expect them to cost $400. From a manufacturing and business standpoint, it will never happen. It cost money to bring new product to market and the cost is passed on to the customer. ARs are the most devalued rifle platform there is right now. Its a great platform, and it is a platform in which most of everything else is compared to. But its a highly devalued platform, an anomaly that only occurs with the AR here in the States.
Cody Forsythe Cody Forsythe I don’t see the downside to this. I understand it’s cheap because of how overproduced they are, it’s an old design, and the R&D is already done. The result is a widespread market to support a great platform that you can acquire for prices as low as $350. Im sure once the military changes to another rifle and caliber, that’s what will be prolific. In the meantime, I can’t justify spending $1500+ on a rifle that doesn’t do anything significantly better than a decent $600 AR, nor does it have the aftermarket support.
There is not downside at all from the point that we get $350 ARs. Its great. The downside comes to new companies and new products. We all want to see new guns being made. However, any new rifle that comes to market that costs more than $1200 gets flamed and criticized for not being a $350 AR. That's my point. You can't bring a new rifle to market that's not an AR for AR prices. It doesn't work like that. So when people like Wendell make the comment that the guns in the video are for people that want to spend 2-3 times more than what an AR costs for a gun that's just an AR alternative, that isn't correct. We don't pay high prices for guns because we have money to blow, we pay the higher prices because I support new product and don't want 50 ARs in my collection. Yes, if you have one rifle and all you care about is fit, form, and function, the $350 AR is the best value. If you however are much further along than that and like collecting and shooting different platforms, that's where other non-AR guns come into play. Its not all about the most bang for your buck with everybody. I think some people's heads would explode if they jumped into the HK forums and saw what people are willing to pay for certain items or jumped into the AK forums and saw the market for collectible AK mags. The gun community is more than $350 ARs.
Most rifles that had been designed after WW2 in an intermediate caliber are modern enough as far as shooting is concerned. AK, AR and AUG over time only really needed a few rails installed and sights improved, but that's all. AR made in 50s, became an M-16 had been essentially rebarrelled, had its receiver top modified and its furniture replaced. Same goes for the AK and AUG.
Long live the King. You may want to consider that at the time Eotechs were issued with the SCAR-L. It's been over 7 years since then and only this year did Eotech finally settle the class-action lawsuit because of their temperature shifting Eotechs. Back then everyone trusted Eotech and they put all the blame on the rifle Vertical stringing after extended firing sessions does happen with all the pencil barrels though.
But no look what's coming rapidly from behind , it's the HK417, and, and it's taken the lead, wait, it's won!!!! Fireworks, fans go wild. Yh, you get the idea.

They are pretty good rifles. I don't have 1,000s of rounds down range on them, but I like them. Most people's issues with them are the price of mags and less than perfect accuracy. I have no problem with either, since it is just a plinking rifle for me, but I know it can get the job done if I need it for defense.
From what I can tell all Bushmaster did was buy the rights from Magpul and change the location of the charging handle followed by Remington producing the mil/le version.
@@erikturner5073 i live in Switzerland so i own a SIG 550/Stgw90. Personaly i think the Swiss Made a very Solid Combination between AR and Kalaschnikov.
The Tavor is pure genius! It's a rifle that is shorter than an NFA SBR, but it's not an SBR that you have to jump through hoops to own. Fantastic little rifle, and a way around bureaucratic nonsense!
My favorite "not an AR" is the FAMAS. I really like having a high rate of fire if I choose to, and the shoulder mag, is a personal favorite of mine. Very compact, and quite accurate too. The recoil is very manageable, and the burst is really nice. And the way it looks is just terrific imo. Big issue though, its just not available for civilians
Please do a video on the Robinson arms xcr-l or xcr-m preferably the competition length models! They are non restricted here in Canada and the nicest alternative to an ar platform that you can hunt with and they can even be chambered in 7.62x39 for some really cheap fun!
The Aussie iteration of the EF88 Austeyer called the Lithgow F90 "Atrax" (You yanks always gotta give guns cool new names), is the new service rifle for the Australian Army. And boy is it awesome...
The HK rifles are probably THE best non AR guns out there. Their only drawback is the price and no last shot hold open. They are accurate and keep their accuracy after one or two mags. They are a smooth firing rifle. They are comfortable to hold prior to firing. They are also not that Buck Rogers futuristic bulky either. Instead #5 on this list it should have been #1.
I agree. The one rifle that beats all of the above is the HK416, although it is almost quite difficult to argue that it is not an AR. It really is a G36 in the much better AR, M4, M16 get-up. To be honest though, for the average Joe, an AR of "almost" any make will do the job just as well as an HK416. The HK416 is for the true professional (we're talking operators), who will accept no substitutes in performance and modularity.
Yes, there is indeed nothing "weird" about talking about a rifle's ability to handle sustained fire for purposes of lawful self-defense as a civilian. Many of us own semi-auto rifles for defending our lives and family's lives in the event of the collapse of the rule of law. In this scenario, we absolutely need to be prepared for the possibility of needing to fire multiple magazines to protect ourselves. Please don't fall into the trap that we somehow can't talk about this scenario and evaluate our defensive equipment accordingly, or that we need to somehow apologize for it.
You guys need to calm down the personal defence thingy. For when the government and rule of law collapses? Why would that ever happen? And why would anyone go after exactly you? What do you have to hide? Why would your neighbour try to kill you? What is wrong with Murica? Sorry for all the questions. I think they are relevant and i am really curious of why the whole PDW mess is a thing.
Hey, I appreciate the questions and I can understand why you're curious. It's really about freedom and our natural right to self-defense. I can understand if you're not from the US - and you no longer have these rights because they've been taken away - so you may not value those rights as much as we do. We desperately don't want to end up in your situation. As for the rule of law being something that can end - look no further than history, my friend. If you need to ask why that can happen, I'm not sure what to say to you...
I still dont see the history of The wild west as a reason to arm the whole country with weapons that can easily murder a lot of people in a short time. I see it like this: If someone really want to hurt you, they can do it very easily without you knowing it will happen. If you both have guns, then even easilier. The guy who pulls the trigger first, wins. So what if your killer gets shot afterwards by a random or even your family? You still lost. You like guns and have it as a hobby? Cool. Do that. Do you want to use your weapon for killing or hurting someone? Not cool. Even for self-defence? Not cool. We have the police for that. Thanks for the good answer. I have had guns in my possession and had no emotinal reason towards self defence when letting go of it. I never had a feeling tell me that im safer with a gun in the house.
First time I have seen your channel. I am impressed with the lack of bs when you talk about the weapons. Never got a chance to fire one sadly, but I am a mega huge Steyr fan. They have to be a decent rifle if the Australian Army uses it. I would love to hear your review on an L1A1 SLR if you can get your hands on one. Damned fine rifle that, and one that I can say I got to shoot in Army Cadets. Weighed a tonne, but a Vietnamese friend of mine, whose Mum was a VC sniper, said it was one of the only weapons she feared. 7.62mm and Rubber Trees are not compatible!

And some people complain about the AR being plastic pea shooters...None of these rifles bring anything to the table over a regular AR that's significant. For your average savage, AR can't be beat. When you own a nice AR and buy one of these rifles, it's like buying a downgrade. You won't get anything out of it that an AR can't do except a lighter wallet. If you like collecting I understand.

Dewey Blackburn Exactly! Multiple AR’s for different applications and different calibers too! It truly is the grown mans barbie doll. The pinnacle of weapon design. I would really love to get my hands on an ak-107 though with thier recoil cancelling gas system.
I am glad you guys brought up the heating issue changing the point of aim impact. Most do not realize the expansion coefficients between plastics and and metals. Aluminum has a different expansion coefficient, same thing for plastics (or composite) and steel. I favor steel its the real McCoy aluminum is good too. But plastics well too unpredictable in terms of expansion. If P expends at X and steel expands at Y, and Al, expands at Z you will have a totally weird and strange points of impact. The M-16 is good because the barrel is pretty much isolated from the rest of the weapon. You start mixing the materials in terms of structure you will get one screwy accuracy. A single material weapon in terms of running gear would by far be best. Further just to give you a bit more of a headache care in design for accuracy has to do in terms of which part expands faster and which part contract faster as they all have direct impact on accuracy. If one designs the weapon where the barrel and sights are isolated from all the other stuff its possible to have a great accuracy in an inexpensive weapon. Its the old adage if you design it right from the beginning.... it will be as cheap or cheaper to make than creating fixes or modifications later. All that needs to be done is pay attention to the characteristics of the material and design it accordingly. With a simple CAD design this stuff should be easy to do on the computer before any metal get cut. I hope I just told everybody that makes guns how to do it right, so we don’t have to suffer through expensive weapons not being accurate.
I have a Berretta ARX with a SJC titan comp and it is absolutely amazing to shoot. I use a magnifier and at 100 yards the sight doesn't move. It has every feature you could want in a rifle, I'm really not sure why it didn't take off. Quick detach barrel makes cleaning a breeze and they make 10 inch barrels of you want to register it. At 7-800 dollars now it's a steal of you can find 1.
Agreed, worth every penny! Unfortunately the general population doesn’t really understand the SIG / SAN relationship, they don’t understand that these are the real deal “SIGs” which means more for us... I like it that way!
A SCAR that is not a 308 misses the whole point of having a SCAR. You can keep your overweight fan-boy crap. The AUG is King of the 5.56 Hill. Been around almost as long as the AR, battle tested in multiple militaries and in several conflicts such as the Falklands, Bulkins, Desert Storm (unlike the SCAR and Tavor), Austrian designed and built. Love the show guys.
The SCAR was not even around during the Falkands war, both sides used the FAL, or rather one side used the metric FAL and the other used the inch FAL. Both the FAL and SCAR were made by Belgian Fabrique Nationale bir they are as different as a Colt 1911 and a Colt M16 both made by Colt. SCAR is new.
@@johnfilmore7638 The part about the Falklands, Balkans, and Desert Storm is referring to the AUG which has been around close to the time of the AR's military counter part.
Steyr Aug for me thanks. Full-length barrel in a bullpup configuration combines the best of a full size assault rifle with the compact utility of a carbine, but without all the drawbacks of a carbine. The US move from the M16 to the M4 is in many ways a backward step
The Australian Military uses the Steyr, and there are a few gripes I have, it's not ambidextrous, unless you like brass in your cheek. No fire selector, just pull the trigger more - in a high stress environment this can be bad, and if you don't have the single sot lock out pin out, or it gets pushed back in. In the Army our standard rifle is the 20" barrel, which makes for excellent accuracy and grouping, and I never really noticed any rounds being thrown by a hot barrel, although we did use the heavy barrels.
I have an MSAR STG556 which I love. Believe it or not, I wasn't interested in bullpups until I played airsoft with an AUG airsoft gun and I was hooked! That persuaded me to buy my first bullpup, which is my MSAR. I also have an FN PS90 now. Bullpups ROCK!

Glad I got 2 original Tavor's one still NIB ; ) Collector so I usually buy guns in pairs or more depending on type, one to shoot one to just keep mint or collect etc. Been doing this for over 30yrs. One good (maybe bad for some) thing about guns that most get discontinued at some point and the value of a new in box gun goes up. I can usually sell my guns for more or than I bought em for or at least even or close, gun depending of course. NOT talking stock or big investment amounts, but guns in general do hold their value so they are an investment of a sort etc. So guns are good buys either way much better than some fancy smartphone etc. I just love all type of guns especially rare types. Keep up the 2A fight people! Or one day we may not have the choice to choose.

For a crappy trigger, A2 pistol grip and plastic and aluminum construction...I don’t hate the 16s but when you think about it there is no “service rifle” today built like the 550 with the exception of possibly the swedish AK-5
It terms of reliability of course you can break extractors and piston assembly springs just like any other Piston operated rifle.
I’ve never heard of the 550/551 having reliability issues for over 20 years.... remember it’s basically just a refined AK operating system.
The shorter 552/553 can have short stroking issues if you use underpowered ammo which can be remedied by adjusting the gas valve.
I agree it should not be on this list because the average dumbass Wants the popular rifles
The SIG SAN 55X series of rifles should be on a list of “best made” service rifles.

The ARX is used in Italy. I have seen it carried by soldiers in Florence at the airport and tourist areas.
Don Groves Because it's made by the Italian brand Beretta :D
the italans use the arx 160. the 160 can shoot fullauto
oh man. l love the old HK G3
My favorite is the XCR-L key mod version that gun is great
Jack Smith *most used weapon in combat* "ItS A rANgE Toy" you sound dumb bro
some people will pay that extra price for something exotic. also by buying an AR you're just perpetuating the AR circlejerk that's preventing other designs from entering the market. they're fine guns but I don't want to live in a world where you can only get one gun that's not prohibitively expensive
Jack Smith Except that the majority of the 882 stoppages was mag related...
Let's get a top 5 Not AK's
Cameron Davis This is a good idea, Galil, AN94(lol)...

Cameron Davis how about top 5 guns that are not mostly plastic
Cameron Davis what I mean to say the idea of polymer is lower production cost when I check the prices of these guns it's sticker shock
You can,t do this.because most of russian modern firearms are not available in US.AEK9XX/AK1XX/pp2000 etc
The guns featured in this video are AR alternatives for people who want to spend 2-3 times or more than what an AR costs.
Have you ever stopped and considered that since ar15 production numbers are so high, it devalues them, economies of scale
This. AR haters BTFO
I hate AR's and Ak47s, so I bought a IWI Tavor 🙌🏽 I Love it
Long live the King.
EO Tech is EO junk.
SCAR FTW!

They are pretty good rifles. I don't have 1,000s of rounds down range on them, but I like them. Most people's issues with them are the price of mags and less than perfect accuracy. I have no problem with either, since it is just a plinking rifle for me, but I know it can get the job done if I need it for defense.

Quarter Pounder With Cheese Haha, I suppose, although I can’t help but love mine, just not the company behind it so much.
The ACR is a good rifle ruined by Remington/Bushmaster.

I have an hk91 and it's one of my favorite rifles I've ever shot. Everything just feels so right and they're awesome shooters
Returning Shadow HKs are such pretentious firearms
Lou McGopher Not the stamped rifles and subguns. Those are good quality at generally sane cost.
Donald Drumpf Just out of curiosity, what mass shooting were you referring to as the biggest in U.S. history?

Try our Australian F90 it’s not a AUG takes 3 different size barels and 300 black out I used the F90 2 years before I got out of the army due to a IED the 300 Black our awesome it puts me down and it also can take the 6.5mm only thing you change is the barel that’s it!! Standard is 556 on sale in the US now it’s a little pricy but your paying for the best quality and pure quality been non bias as a Australian iv trained with marines that said they throw there M4\M16 away for the F90

The SCAR was not even around during the Falkands war, both sides used the FAL, or rather one side used the metric FAL and the other used the inch FAL.

Glad I got 2 original Tavor's one still NIB ; ) Collector so I usually buy guns in pairs or more depending on type, one to shoot one to just keep mint or collect etc. Been doing this for over 30yrs. I can usually sell my guns for more or than I bought em for or at least even or close, gun depending of course.
