I remember 5 years ago a lady crashing in front of me on one of my first mountain bike races. I stopped and asked if she was ok and there was no response. She had a heart attack while she was riding and I gave up my race (was in a podium finish at the time) to help her out until medical personnel arrived. They transported her to the hospital and she has since recovered and continues to ride but not in races anymore. Her, her husband and family and I still keep in contact and get together to ride sometimes and they are all like family now. Really good to see that there are so many other riders out there there are willing to help out and give up there race to help another rider. I would give up another race again if I had to help out another rider. Thank you Macky for being AWESOME!!!!

When I raced XC in Alaska in the 90s, there was no question if someone was seriously hurt of not stopping and helping (especially since it was Alaska). It’s one thing in a World Cup race where they have all kinds of course personnel and medical personnel standing by, but in a local race, people’s safety takes absolute precedence. Good on you for thinking right; we need to be helpful towards our fellow racers and worry more about them than a race. There’s always another race to run, but people’s lives are not infinite.
That’s one of the things I have always enjoyed about mountain bike racing; it’s an extremely gentlemanly sport where people cheer each other on and support each other. The competitiveness is just a bonus we get for having fun together. 👍🏻

Macky, I greatly admire and appreciate your compassion for the downed rider. Both of you are true sportsmen, ethical, kind, humble and transparent. That's what keeps me coming back. (My wife watches all your videos and she doesn't ride)

You know, I am a part of multiple communities (as most of us are). I enjoy the cycling community, 3d printing community, writing community, and a few others. There's a weird competitiveness in some of those other communities. But one thing I have always been grateful for is how incredibly supportive the mountain bike community is. Almost everyone is willing to help others out, even the noobs getting into the sport. It's one of the best communities I have ever had the pleasure of being involved in.
I love the mess you have, Macky. How no matter how good you are in this sport, there's still the chance that something terrible can happen. I have never wanted to get to a point where I don't forget to respect the trail. There are a lot of times when I'm coming to the end of the ride and I shout out a thank you to the trail for being kind to me on that ride. Just respect the trail.

I used to race XC in Alaska and that sense of community was one of my favorite aspects of being in the sport. We always cheered each other on and supported each other; the competition was subordinate to the fun we all had together. It’s always been a very sportsmanlike, gentlemanly sport and I’m happy to see that’s still the case all these years later.

Hooooooooly hell. I've been silently watching these videos for a few weeks now, as I've slowly gotten more and more interested in mountain biking, with this being the first full stage race that I've watched brand new.
The main thing that I will say is: I can *totally* see why you guys are held in such high regards. Not only did you guys manage to power through one of the toughest MTB stage races out there while under the weather and still finish strong, but you also showed the community aspect of the sport too, whilst also sending out a reminder of the many dangers that can occur regardless of skill or age. And good on you for sharing the GoFundMe for Howard as well.
    Overall, a job well done.

I have a few things to say to you both, after ending this epic adventure. Let's start with the easy one: You are both extraordinary. As riders and as human beings. Second: as a rider, and not a racer what I felt, a long way away, in Portugal is that the Brec Epic is on the very limit of what XCO marathon/endurance races can be. Those trails go from absolutely gorgeous single tracks, perfect for your ARI's, to the most gnarliest rock gardens and technical climbs. In my humble opinion/vision, the very limit of what an XCO endurance race should "present" for it's riders. I'm now slowly building my next, final bike, a 120/120mm XC with trail capbility. I haven't decided yet on the yeti asr or the specialized Epic 8 but...my adoration for my current stumpjumper says than when the time comes to buy the last piece of the puzzle, the frame, I'm gonna choose the Epic 8. And...I wouldn't take that bike to those trails! I could easily take something like a an Orbea Occam, light trail bike frame, with 140mm travel front/back and achieve a build of 12 kgs or very close. With good trail tires and very good brakes. With less than that I wouldn't dream of tackling trails like those. But, that's why I am a doctor and you're professional mtb racers!! Lol! The last piece of my "letter" to both of you I'm gonna apologise for, before even starting. And it's this: I can't, as an inteligent, compassionate and knowledgeable human being, wich I am, compreehend a country than can ellect, as leader of the free world, someone like Donald Trump...ever since the war in Ucrania started and took such a toll on my little country that I detest and fear every single russian man and woman who stand beside that dictator and what he is illegally doing. But I'm even more afraid of americans...This planet receded 30 + years because of what that racist, shortsided and incompetent excuse of a man was able to do, while in office...backed by millions and millions of your contrymen.
And you Macky, completelly changed that for me! The way your race ended was the worst possible way imaginable. A rider getting seriously hurt is the peak worse of what anyone in this sport can imagine happening. And the whole pack of elite men competitors showed everyone what being american, and a true sportsman, trully is about. It's about being compassionate, caring, decent and humane. It's about actually being the "freaking" leaders of the free world. You actually led me to tears with your last speach. I can only remember one single sport nowadays where I saw that happening: The Dakar race. A portuguese bike rider was very seriously hurt, a few years back, during the beginning of a stage. The leader of the race stopped and didn't leave his side until he was on the helicopter beying medevacked. He later perished...The pilot that stood beside him the whole time was completelly devastated...His race was over, done. And of course, in the golden years of F1 I still remember Ayrton Senna stopping his F1 and rushing to the site of a crash, to help the injured pilot...This kind of thing doesn't happen anymore. So thank you for reminding me what true americans, true gentlemen and true competitors actually do. Sorry for the long "letter". But I felt I had to write this to you.
As always, I'll be cheering you on, always, from Coimbra, Portugal. Be well and be safe!

There is rarely an opportune time to bring this up, but now that this latest race is concluded, I would love to see you guys dedicate time to those wonderful Shafer gravel bikes by doing something truly epic with them.
I know Syd did one nice ride on hers a while back, but there was not too much said about how it handled the trip.
I would love to see you guys do the Smoke n Fire 400 bikepack route in Idaho on the gravel bikes. The weather for that is absolutely ideal in late September to mid-October (you will need a puffy jacket for the nights). Normally, people use mountain bikes for that route, but your very high skill level makes using a gravel bike very doable. Its not a technical route at all by your standards.
At the very least, would love to see you guys do a multi-day bikepack route on the Shafers, closer to home in New Mexico. Consult the bikepacking website which has routes across the country for some ideas. I think most of the NM routes are mountain bike only though. Guess it is a very rugged and rocky state.

Other events aside, its interesting what you learn in places you least expect. I also use the iGPSport bike computer and in an earlier EPIC video Syd said her computer was having issues determining which direction she was going. Funny I instantly knew what she was talking about. If you have a map loaded and ride a trail out in one direction and then back in the other, my iGPSport PC does the same thing. The map is unable to determine if you are coming or going. I was curious if that was just an issue with my computer. Interesting to see that it actually isn't. Hopefully a fix is coming.

    • @sydandmacky
      @sydandmacky  2 місяці тому

Hmm I don't think that was necessarily an issue with the IGPSport so much as just the unreliability of GPS in the mountains. When the course goes close to another part of the course, it's not uncommon for the GPS signal to pick up slightly off which confuses the route. We had the same issue with stages sometimes too 🤷‍♂️

Strenuous exercise creates inflammation in the body and a stage race doesn't give it time to recuperate and why it's one of the toughest of cycling events like the tour which may be the toughest stage cycling race but what you two have done shows you can perceiver and overcome even with the body saying I have had enough

Both of us are breathing through our mouths in this video. As a general rule, Mike usually says nasal breathing for easy endurance pace, in nose out mouth for threshold and mouth for race pace or VO2. That said, elevation changes things a lot, and I think most people are probably breathing through their mouths at endurance pace or above at 10,000 feet of elevation.
