Helter Skelter (white album version not this watered down vesion), is credited with being the template for heavy rock, distinct from cream, hendrix, zepplin and purple mk1 which were hard blues pre 1969.. This is distinct from the album version in many ways , not least the sharper guitars, Ringos heavy drumming, cutting vocals (softened over the years), cutting guitar solo (not an impression as here). and finally after the collapse of the song finale, John shouting " I've got blisters on my fingers", after so many takes to get this right, he had blistered his fingers and in case another take was suggested, John let loose with this comment that was kept in. AS a musician its recognised that a live version of a studio track is often softer due to acoustic and tech limitations live, add to that, you only have one member of the original band with all that brings and its not the same. Paul was quoted once "The white album was a compilation of solo tracks, so recording each was laborious and for instance on helter skelter , the last track finished, George was getting frustrated at playing the same solo over and over John ended up shredding his fingers and by the last take my voice was going, so many takes, then we ended up building the track, RINGOS heaviest take, GEORGES, prefered take, ast but one of my voice and Johns last, out burst and all" . something you cant duplicate 20 years later with a different band and the absence of original producer and engineer. please try the original by THE BEATLES.

Zeppelin were neither a blues band or a metal band. They were so much more. However a few of their early songs were most definitely a template for the hard rock and metal that followed. Communication Breakdown has it all. Bags of energy and attitude, heavy riffing, breakneck fast solo, screaming vocals, powerful drumming and bass etc. Zeppelin were already playing that to the public before Helter Skelter was finished being recorded. Sabbath and Purple wouldn't have sounded as they did without Zeppelin for a start. Zeppelin were WAY more important to the direction rock music went in the 1970s and beyond than the Beatles were.

The Beatles were always rock band, although they did every genre before they were through. This is without a doubt their heaviest song, but they have other heavies! The White album is full of them- "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey", "Birthday", "Savoy Truffle", and of course you already did "Revolution". Other hard rocking songs that I love are "Paperback Writer", "Taxman", and "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band" (I love the reprise). So many more...

ALWAYS start with the original studio version, no matter which group you have. Even if the live or cover version is excellent, you need to hear the source and inspiration for subsequent versions. And all too often the live versions suffer from various problems, whether it's technical or performance related.

  • @ChickCiccarelli

Paul McCartney wrote “Helter Skelter” as a response to critics who accused him of writing only sentimental ballads and to compete against The Who's "I Can See for Miles, " described in an article at the time as the loudest, rawest, dirtiest song The Who had ever recorded. Later the song would become known for the killing spree ordered by cult leader Charles Manson (because of his interpretation of the “Helter Skelter” lyrics). One of Manson's cult members wrote “Helter Skelter” in blood on the walls of the crime scene. The song is also regarded as a key influence in the early development of heavy metal.
