ORIGINAL - RECENT ENGINE & DRIVELINE OVERHAUL
    PLEASE WATCH THE VIDEO HERE
FOR SALE IS A LOVELY ORIGINAL 1939 Chrysler imperial. The paint, interior, and chrome on this Imperial, one of 10,536 that Chrysler produced that year, is said to be almost entirely original, except for the rebuilding of its factory engine. Sold new in Oregon, this Imperial four-door sedan is said to have spent years in Nebraska, where it was garaged by its original owner in 1968 and remained out of sight until its second owner acquired it. Few years ago the second owner sold it to an older man here in Monterey, CA who enjoyed it until he became ill and decided to sell it. This Imperial enjoys a remarkable degree and quality of preservation, and its odometer reading is believed to be accurate.
    Exterior
The paint on this Imperial is believed to be fully original. The first owner is said to have touched up any chips. Check out the paint in person, or watch the video to see its condition.
I was told the original owner covered his garage floor with sheets of cardboard that inhibited rust formation underneath the car. There should be absolutely no real rust anywhere. No evidence of rust repair either. The glass is said to be all original.
    Interior
The seating and related facings in this Imperial are said to be the original wool-based coverings, which appear to be free of soiling, tears, or other damage. The front seat’s side frame has slight wear. The car retains its original rubber front floor mat and rear carpeting. The original headliner appears to be undamaged and is said to have an operating dome lamp. The painted steel dashboard presents in unrestored condition. The interior is very original, except for new knobs on the window winders. There is no radio, but the heater should also be operable.
    Chassis
The base Imperial engine in 1939 was Chrysler’s 323.5-cu.in. L-head straight-eight. With an optional compression ratio of 7.45:1, the engine received its fuel mixture via a Stromberg AAV-Z two-barrel carburetor and was rated by the manufacturer at 138 horsepower. The straight-eight is believed to be original to the car, and is about 500 miles on the fully rebuilt engine. A replacement cast-iron head has been fitted and all bearings and seals have been replaced. The engine idle smoothly, without smoke. It shifts smoothly through all of its three-speed manual transmission, whose Fluid Drive replaces a conventional flywheel, or the overdrive system. The engine bay presents as stock and strongly clean.

Very nice. Would be nice to find a '39 license plate for it and to register it as such.

Very nice Imperial. I've only seen one other 39 in Vermont a number of years ago. A shame about the scrapes on the sides. Looks like they didn't take the keys away from the owner soon enough.

What a beautiful car. It's shame that the sides of it are banged up. I find myself wondering if the damage was one incident or two. It would be nice to know if it took place on a stolen joyride or if it was honest damage due to the owner that sold the car due to illness.
For anyone that's new/newer to Chrysler products let me share that, Chryslers were considered the best car that you could buy up until about 1975. And particularly those from the 1930s through the 1960s. Ask any old-timer. I've owned 1948 Chrysler for about ten years now. It has almost 80,000 miles on it. It drives beautifully and has been an excellent and reliable car, only having to replace parts that deteriorate with age and sun exposure such as rubber bushings, rubber mounts and the windshield gaskets. The engine has never been opened-up and most of the peripherals are day-one parts, such as the carburetor and generator. Because I had learned that Chryslers were so well-built (Thanks Dad) I felt confident in buying one over the more popular Chevrolets and Fords.

Crazy as it sounds this imperial was priced next to Royal Windsor, then new Yorker and highest price Saratoga. Then crown imperial limo. Similar in 40 but no reg Imperial but Saratoga highest price over new yorker except for crown imperial limo. Then in 41 no reg imp and Saratoga is back less money than new Yorker.

The Saratoga and New Yorker changed places during the middle of either 40 or 41. The Springtime Specials featured a lower priced Saratoga. There it remained through 1950.

Are the window cranks actually round glass balls ? That's awesome.

I haven't seen glass looking balls on the window cranks before. They're new to me because I've never seen a 1939 Imperial. I can tell you that Chrysler was enthusiastic in their use of early plastics. You can see some of these in the video here, on the dashboard trim and the glove compartment door. My gut feeling is that the crank balls are probably glass unless this car has been garaged since day one. The reason I say this is because I own a 1948 Chrysler Windsor which was one of Chrysler's better dressed cars. In my car they used lavaliers on the window crank handles. And the dangling ends pieces are a combination of chrome side mounts with a glass-like insert. I say glass-like because mine have yellowed somewhat over my car's seventy-five years. My description of these is horrible but if interested you can find photos on-line. Your search would be "1948 Chrysler, Windsor Highlander or New Yorker, or Imperial, Interior." And click the option for, photos. My mention of "Windsor Highlander" is that I know the lavaliers are in that version. Or you could search one of the higher models such as, "New Yorker" or "Imperial" because those models would have them too.
I don't how much interest you have in Chrysler's. If you're new/newer to them let me share that, Chrysler was considered the best cars that you could buy up until 1975. Sadly soon all combustion cars and trucks including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-(
In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025
on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Car washs will be forbidden too because they are climate killers, now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime. (BABVVEN & TEBBVEN & BEFVO laws)!!!

What a shame, but here in California, only the sale of new gas cars will be banned. We will still be able to buy used ones, and keep the ones we have.
