Another advantage of old cars is that they aren't constantly looking over your shoulder. It's not paranoia if they really are watching you all the time! :)

Jay Leno has Johnnie Carson's dad's 1938 Royal.
The hood ornament hints at the Eagle to come.
The license plate light on the trunk mimics the hood
and the trim on the skirts is half of the hood ornament.

That '38 dash is a work of art! I havta say, I was never a fan of cars from this era, but with your reviews, I am quickly not only becoming a fan, but truly appreciating the innovations made during this time as well. To me, they all looked the same, but with your up close reviews, I'm noticing the styling differences and details. So thanx! I guess old dawgs can learn new tricks! One other thing that didn't help the Airflow was GM's media campaign against it... No one said squat when Taurus drivetrains were falling off... LOL... I love that radio set up! So cool! What a great car! And wait... what's that I see? Are those "venti-ports" on the hood? 🙂 WYR: 1) Chrysler 2) Chrysler... that Graham snout is just a no... LoL

I could go on and on and on about new cars and how overpriced they are they’re never going to come down in price because people keep buying them and Covid really ruined the market people paying $20,000 over MSRP. I thought was the dumbest thing in the world.. now those cars are being repossessed because they can’t afford them. Interest rates are through the roof. I could go on forever, but I’m not going to lol.

Yes, the cars from this era are wonderful to behold. My first car was a 1949 Plymouth coupe. Those steel-bodied cars rusted soon enough in our salted winter road climate. Jay shows the design details on this one very well: imagine having a body shop in your hometown reproduce them!

For WYR, it’s the Chrysler Royal in the first scenario, both the Chrysler and the Huppmobile the second scenario. But it’s got to be this color, instead of the blue.
As far as dashboards are concerned, I take the ‘38 over the ‘37.
Great car, for all the reasons you mentioned….the grillle, the ornament on the fender skirt, the art deco dash. But I love the color most of all!

When I was a kid, a lot of vehicles from the pre war era were still sitting around in garages or back yards. So had a chance to go inside them. They all had a uniform 'OLD' car smell, which was unpleasant. At the same time, most of these were ex USA military vehicles, mostly staff cars, with the massive rear seat room. Recalling that Pacific command, under General Douglas McAurthur was located in my city (Melbouirne Australia) The navy See-Bees had built a concrete road from the airport to speed McArthur out of their. I have often wondered if I had ever been in one of the Generals vehicles? So many items were sold off as surplus following WWII, that a 'Crocodile' tank, for towing fuel for flame throwers in tanks sat forlornly on a block of unused land, A Catalina navy plane sat at the airport, and even de-milled tanks were being sold so cheaply that farmers would buy them as spare tractors. I found a Mark VII Churchill tank in a farmers field one day (early 70s) which had the upper armour removed with a blow torch, and I took a souvenir, the gear change plate of solid cast iron. I still have it at a decorative piece. Your show is great for enlivening history you know Jay. All the cars I was aware of were 'Dodges.'

My Dad's first car was a 35 Plymouth that he and his sister shared. No pics of it exist that I know of, so I don't know if it was a coupe or sedan, darned sure it wasn't a convertible. Dad passed in 2012 but his sister is still going at 98 (those women always kick our asses in the longevity test) so I should ask her about that Plymouth! Great job as always Jay!

I wonder how many men have died after saying hold my beer.

Your rant at the end of the video is soooooo true! Todays cars have no soul, nor a personality. I would also hazard a guess that those seats are just as comfy as any new car- in fact, they could be put in my living room! I'm not a huge fan of most 30's cars, but at least they had soul! Oh, having a Yahoo email addy is nothing to be ashamed of, I like them better than Cox.

If I could have it my way, I would have a bunch of 30s 50s cars I really want an airflow 37 or 36. I like those two years the most… 30s and 50s are my two favorite decades I would really love the owner of golden Hawk one day as well as a 59 Rambler cross country that’s my favorite wagon of all time..
I was watching a podcast with Doug Deiro saying that he doesn’t take anybody seriously that has a Yahoo account which I thought was very close minded to think people judge people based on their email account.. sort of shallow idk

Hi Jay! You are so right! I have overlooked these cars for a long time. But, seeing it again, I kind of like the design. The '38 is a little better looking than the '37. Looks so comfy inside! Interestingly, the trunk trim piece/license place light must have been a direct carry over from '37 as it mimics the 1937 grille shell. The dash is so nice! Another nice thing about this car is it has a lot of bells and whistles for the time. Specifically, the heater and radio. Every time you show the specs for these 6 cylinder cars, I can understand why Henry Ford hated the six so much! Most if not all have equal horsepower or sometimes even more than the venerable Flathead V-8. Now the flatty was a lot lighter than the OHV or flathead sixes, but still. . .
WYR#1 as tempting as the other two are, I'm going Chrysler on this one. #2 ALL of them!! LOVE the Sharknose Graham and the Hupp, too!!

Fantastic Chrysler in my favorite deep green color, and luxurious interior and dash, those 30,'s and 40's dashes were wonderful works of art from a American Bantam to the most expensive Packard. The clock is in a much better spot instead of the glove box lid. First pick Hudson 6 second Graham Shark nose. Purchased my last new vehicle in 2003 said when I bought it now 21 years old, no more new ones, the next will be a 60's 70's classic whether it is a plain Pontiac Le Mans hardtop, or a basic 6 cylinder 3 speed manual sedan or wagon.or truck. For the price of a new 100,000 vehicle I can purchase a Chrysler Letter car, and unlike the new one it will never lose its value .

Both dash designs have their strong points. I prefer the earlier one for its 'timeless elegance' and its 'wooden boat' strake look.

Very nice job on the video. To me this car isn't anything special but it is super interesting to see its design details shown clearly in such a nice example and it makes cars like this much more attractive to me. In the first scenario I'd choose the 1938 Hudson Six and the second the 1938 Sharknose Graham by a mile! I love those Sharknose Grahams! I love old cars but I've driven a lot and seen a lot of accidents so I want all the safety features of newer cars. Plus I have a relative and a couple friends who were ambulance drivers for years and they all said they would never want a daily driver without airbags. Safety engineering and the engineering for performance and economy crank up the prices a lot and I begrudgingly say it's worth it. But yeah, new cars don't have the soul or character of older cars.

Nice video but I definitely like the 1939 model year a lot better. The Dodge and the Chrysler looked a lot a like in '38. I hope that you do a video on a '39 Chrysler sometime in the near future, if you haven't done one already. For WYR, I'll take the Hudson, and definitely the Graham shark nose. What a unique looking car! And then for the song, my only guess would be "My Baby Left Me", by Elvis Presley, but I don't think that I got that one right. 🤔

Definitely The goal was the cover at least one car from every single manufacturer that never gets talked about on the flipside of that I want to cover every single car like at least one so I want to revisit this with the Chrysler imperial and the Chrysler imperial custom as well as a few multiple body styles.. the coupes look so nice but are rare
Great choices I love the shark nose graham that is a car that I’ve definitely been looking for.. I want to know what that car sounds like I can’t think of another company that supercharged the six back then.
      It’s not an Elvis song
Song is from 66 it’s not The Beach Boys either

Yes Chrysler were an engineering company forst and foremost. Looks whats happened to them now though. THey are at best a syling company, resting on the memory of their variant of the hemi-head. Which wasnt so fancy an idea anyway. IE, the Merlin engine ran a hemi with 4 valves per cylinder, DOHC with sodium cooled valves, and much more, and that was in the early 30s. Tell me, was first gear syncro'ed?

Want a comment? Ok fine. You should have rolled down the front windows and seen that the vent window trim is on the roll down glass and not the vent window so when its rolled down the view is clearer. Walt would have worked on this car design as well before passing.

I do have to disagree somewhat with your statement about consumers controlling the auto market. In the US the rising costs in the auto market have a lot to do with government regulation. The government is trying to force auto makers create a car that is as safe as a Sherman Tank yet get 100 mpg. That type of regulation is expensive to comply with and the cost is reflected in new car prices. True, the public is eating up all the new features that come out on cars but that's only part of the cost.

My dad bought a brand new Ford F150 truck it was a 2015 model option completely out but he bought it in 2016 for whatever reason it sat on the lot for a year they took $25,000 off the truck he bought a $55,000 truck For 30 grand it was insane. It was the best truck he ever had… that won’t happen now but it takes everybody to not buy just like what happened with Bud Light..
