You just popped up in my recommends!
Between 2006 and 2016, I used to spend about 3 months of every year in Japan - nothing to do with work, I just liked the place!
Shinjuku made a huge impression on me the first time I visited. Walking down from the station (is it the East Gate? It's been a while!) to Kabukicho, you have to cross a main road that is just a mass of neon - the whole place was throbbing with energy. I got really emotional that first time - I was saying to myself - 'This is the heart of the world!'.
And then on to Kabukicho itself, with all the salaryman bars and clubs - drunk men in suits lying flat out on the pavement with their briefcase placed neatly next to them, dodgy guys outside dodgy clubs, like they were in a Tarantino movie. It was all wonderful!
I went back many times, but nothing could bring back that original emotional rush.
Japan changed a lot over those 10 years, and I'm not sure I want to return. I was no spring chicken then, and I'm a pensioner now. The long haul flight from the UK is daunting, and there are SO many tourists now. About 3m per year first visit, and 10 years later, in 2016, 23m! God only knows how many it is in 2024. I was one of them, of course, and I blame myself for telling everybody how great it was. It is all my fault!

Given they state of the yen right now, my guess is they appreciate the tourism. I live in Nagoya and only get to Tokyo a few times a year so it hasn't lost its magic on me yet.

Nagoya really surprised me with its size first time I was there! And all the elevated roadways! I was there during Xmas period once, and the tree at the front of the station was massive!
But the issue with the tourists for me was that it happened so suddenly, they hadn't built the hotels yet. So the first few years I'd move around the country, booking hotels when I needed them. But as tourism increased, it became very had to find anywhere - booking way in advance was essential. Changed the vibe.
First couple of trips, it was 250-ish Yen to Pound! Everything was so cheap! But it fell at less than 150 to Pound, so prices almost doubled for me. Haven't looked recently, but Japanese friends have mentioned the fall.

@ZachariahJ I recently read an article about how because of the weak yen tourism has spiked and japanese people can't get hotels so someone similar is happening.
Yeah they go overboard at the station. I love when they set up all the illuminations around here.

I’m shocked that this video popped up in my algorithm just now despite being subscribed and my hunt for video essays on classic horror games for the spooky season. The research and work you put into this is top notch and I can’t press the thumbs up button enough 👍

@@madeline5493 UA-cam has been especially unkind to this one and unfortunately, short of reuploading completely, there's nothing I can do about it. I was very disheartened with the initial response. The good news is nostalgia based content doesn't exactly have a time limit and I've had several videos go unnoticed for almost a year before getting a second wind. So maybe it'll pan out in the end.

I am a retrospective aficionado, so when youtube recommended me your video, I decided to give it a shot. Very glad that I did! I'll be playing catch up with your older videos first, but do know your efforts are appreciated despite not having a stellar amount of subscribers or views; you have nothing to envy from bigger channel. Keep up your efforts!!!!

Thanks that means a lot. I do this because I love making videos but I was hoping for a better turn out for a Halloween horror game video so this one was a little disappointing. But I appreciate your words.

@@arkham666 If I were to guess, maybe the YT algorithm seems to prefer clickbaity titles ex: "The Most Heartwrenching Horror Game: Whateverland". I'd refer to the title for Baroque from someone like Dungeon Chill? The content is there, you just need one video to catch the algo's attention to blow up and jumpstart your channel for good. Worry not, I'll keep on the lookout for future videos as I feast on the backlog during work! I believe in the future of this channel!
