It hurts me to see this channel go to such waste. The production value is stunning and I absolutely love the classic "James Bond" vibes that many of the videos possess. Unfortunately, many videos are absolutely worthless. I see many videos where there is only one style that someone would actually attempt to wear (shorts with a tuxedo jacket is not creative or fun... Just tacky and disrespectful). Although that upsets me, it is this video that truly grinds my gears. Black tie is one step down from the most formal wear a man can partake in. In most cases it IS the most formal thing a man will wear. Because of the structure of the tux wear there are very few places you can go wrong with a tuxedo... This video found one of those ways. If you are going up get all fancied up and look your best you should at least try, especially if you're a grown man. That is why a pre-tied bow tie is NEVER OK. It's hard for me to see regular folks make this mistake, but to see a menswear channel do it is absolutely terrible.
Right there with you on this. Also cringed when the full time model, who’s job is in fashion, said button top- down and he listed the sometimes always never rule in the wrong order….and then mrporter produced the episode. The video Mowed over the beauty in the formality of it all.
The buttoning order on three button jkts and blazers is sometimes top, always mid (but open when seated), followed by never on the bottom button. The order is incorrect here
And if there is only one button, as it SHOULD be the case HERE that it is about dinner suits, then the button should be buttoned, especialy if worn with a waistband. If worn with waistcoat/vest instead, then it COULD be unbuttoned...
@@123dorias tbh i find the cummerbund buttoning rule superfluous nowdays when we have things like smoking jkts/ tuxedos with t-shirts, But the buttoning of the jacket is just for the silhouette, just today I had a young lad that I had to insist upon buttoning because it was more flattering taper wise
@@Kafetti But dinner suits/tuxedos should have one button, unlike the example in the video.. This one button should be treated like the "always mid (but open when seated)" that you said... Wait I thought a Black Tux needed to be peak lapels not notched. Patent leather (doesn't have to be leather as long its patent look) oxfords not derby's and tuxedo bib shirt that required cuff links?
derbies are designed to fit a man with wide feet and although not as clean/formal as oxfords: unbrogued derbies are acceptable for evening attire, I'd say opera pumps would be the norm, both oxfords and derbies are oke
I was just about to post about the notched lapels. glad somewhere else on youtube has a clue : ) do you prefer peak or shawl? im a shawl man myself : )
God I hate pre-tied bows... I prefet Charvet, 1 piece bowtie... Shirt : bespoke (no made to measure), Dinner Jacket(s) : bespoke, shoes : Edward Green of course.
I ONLY learned to tie a Bow tie this yr. @ the age of 49yrs, old & Let me tell you Guys that Now that i know i really can't see myself going back to pre tie.
that is what fashion is suposed to be: too ugly to be worn for more than a season so there is no reason for a fashion-bowtie to be propperly made it should be mentioned that I dont think fashion deserves a place in a classical attire like a tuxedo
either type of waist covering is provided so that your waistline does not look odd! and black tie is a highly respected attire to be worn with certain rules please keep your opinion to yourself and dont spoil the attire
The first guy said you need to start from bottom up. Well he should practise what he preaches and work on his body first. He has a freaking beer gut :)
+Khanh Ho To be fair, that's true about every piece of clothing. And suits still hold up better than t-shits and sweatpants when worn be a 'grander' gentleman :)
Wait wait wait ... Did Mr. P. Björkman put on a pre-tied bowtie? PRE-TIED? Maybe my eyes have mistook this detail.
His collar doesn’t fit. M.
Pre tied bow tie and notch lapel jacket = fail
And no cummerbund and socks and shoes...
And don't forget the awful Derby shoes
@c6g12c6
Exactly.
And no cummerbund

Completely agree. Never wear a self-tie bow tie. Unless you are a teenager going to a prom.
Right there with you on this.

I could never wear a clip-on bow tie with my tux.....looks tacky IMO, but hey everyone's taste is different.
You play with power ranger toys you have no say in fashion lol.
The rule on buttoning wasn't "Sometimes, always, never"?
What's up with the clip-on bow ties?
Wait I thought a Black Tux needed to be peak lapels not notched. Patent leather (doesn't have to be leather as long its patent look) oxfords not derby's and tuxedo bib shirt that required cuff links?
You like your life complicated don't you ?
Patent is preferable but a good shine oxford will do too. Peak/Shawl lapels only. Notch is big no.
These just look like black suits with a bow tie on. I like my tuxes a little more extravagant, I guess.

Derbies (an informal shoe) and a tux (the most formal thing to wear)? I thought oxfords were standard, hmm 🤔.

I WISHD ID HAD TUXEDO LIKE THAT
Just echoing the comments posted here. Clip-on bow ties are a big no-no.
@1:02 Derbys??? Wrong, wrong shoes...
Everyone wears an derby, very wrong indeed, you must wear an opera pumps or not an wholecut/capless oxford, never a derbies
3:45
They even get the button rule wrong... it's 'Sometimes, always, never'. Jeez.. And pre-tied bows? I mean, come on...
I was just about to post about the notched lapels. glad somewhere else on youtube has a clue : )

im a shawl man myself : )
Peaked for me and yes I noticed the notched lapels too.
i would love to learn use tuxedo
Pontus pulled the tuxedo off like no one else !
Could anyone identify the shoes Nick Sullivan was wearing with his tux?
A patent derby which is wrong, it can only be a capless oxford or a pump.
@@staaswolter641 derbies are fine as long as there is no perforatios, oxfords and pumps are merely (quit a bit) better
I'm upset that the waistcoat has been done away with. Also why are we lacking socks and pre-tied bow ties, really?
Agree. They look terribly wrong.
Connor Smith where do you see no socks?
@@sasohal 2:40 Second Outfit, they guy has no socks on
the last guy had the perfect socks. Black Silk.
I'm really grateful for these tuxedo videos featuring on Mr Porter, you guys are awesome.
Can anyone tell me the name of the song playing throughout this video?
what kind of jacket was the first one wearing
I want more videos every day, i love them all
The last two ones didnt looked good in tuxedos , first because they werent good ones and they both had a bad fit
No style guys.. shirt collars too big.. pre-tied bows.. no pocket squares.. no socks.. should i go on?
God I hate pre-tied bows... I prefet Charvet, 1 piece bowtie... Shirt : bespoke (no made to measure), Dinner Jacket(s) : bespoke, shoes : Edward Green of course.
AND NO WAIST COVERINGS! You can see that annoying white triangle under their button and it is very annoying
not to mention, I spotted a notch-lapel in there, some two-button jackets, and bow ties that didn't match what should have been satin lapels...
Agreed, and where the hell is the cummerbund? Not right at all.
What shoe is Nick Sullivan wearing?
I WOULD LOVE TO WEAR TUXEDO AND FIRST ONE AT SOME PARTYS OR DINNERS
I WISHD ID HAD TUXEDO NR 1
@ 2:47 the PRE-TIED bow tie looks awfully loose!! That can't be right!! Should check how Italians wear everything ... including the Tuxedo!
Handsome man. Real Gentleman.
Came for tux stayed for jazz.
ERES MUY ELEGANTE HA MIN ME GUSTA
Some of the styles featured in this video are downright sacrilegious.
Konjic nails the short stubble beard 🧔♂️
I WOULD LOVE TO WEAR A TUXEDO
I agree with Nick the most, apart from the no black rule
I love the Acne swedish man's house
Talking to the shoes on the last guy. Is it leather or what?
I ONLY learned to tie a Bow tie this yr. @ the age of 49yrs, old & Let me tell you Guys that Now that i know i really can't see myself going back to pre tie.
As a flamboyant person. I like wearing a tuxedo every walks and trips but my parents never allow me to.
Perfection.
A clip-on bowtie AND a tuxedo with notched lapel? That's blasphemy
i wear a rose in my tuxedo jacket and i use a shoe horn to put my shoes on
I was expecting advice on how to style a tuxedo, not personal opinions on what is a tuxedo.
I learned nothing from this video except I don't need to learn how to tie a bowtie
this is night-attire worn as daywear: cover your waists
Of the 3 men, only 1 tied his own bow tie. Tells you something right there… 🧐.
always put your shoes than your shirt.that is why all of there shirts a untucked after they put there shoes on
Cover the waist band
valentinos
Derby shoes? Pre-tied bow tie? No cummerbund? Is it even a “black tie”?
1st guy had the best fit but you didn’t actually show it🙄. 2nd and 3rd were pretty bad imo
A derby with a tux? Jesus
The first guy is a bit much. The second guy needs to discover a tape measure. Did you see how big the shirt was? Come on young man!
2 nD 3rd GUY What a joke

why do these men forget cummerbunds ?
The trend now is to not wear cummerbund or vest.
Voice of Sanity i like how you used trend. trend are for naive gentleman!
Faiz Shaikh Whatever you say, but I've seen it in a lot of places.
Faiz Shaikh cummerbund and vests both look terrible.

Disappointing video, none of these guys know proper black tie.
Gosh... I extra mrporter to have better guys than people who use pre tied bowties
Did i just see a tuxedo jacket with notched lapels?🤢🤢

Did I see something called Acne studios in the 2nd vignette? Gross !
I can't stand the way Pontus talks his english.. and Iam swedish aswell.
the second looks bad, his legs look bad, the shoes without socks are horrible
PRE-TIED BOW TIES are actually convenient. Real bow ties have to be untied and ties all over again, but ties and pre-tied bow ties are easy.
THEY AREN'T HANDSOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :( :( :( :( :(
