    James Bond is one of the world's most famous fictional characters. His style is admired, copied, and adored by men around the world. Even though there are entire blogs and channels dedicated to the style of James Bond, it's not that easy to copy his look because on the one hand, you need a lot of dough, on the other hand, you may not look like James Bond.
    Just because an outfit works well for 007, doesn't mean it will work well for you, and your style, and your surroundings.
    At the Gentleman's Gazette, we think it makes more sense to figure out what style rules Bond abides by and then use those to adapt them to your unique situations rather than just copying him to the tee.
    Even though we think it's impossible to distill James Bond’s style down to one single concept, we came up with 11 rules that we think he lives by.
    Number one, he respects the power and style of clothes. Obviously, Bond is an intense character who's more a man of action rather than words. As such, his clothes are an important part of who he is and how he wants to be perceived.
    Two, Bond knows exactly what works for him and he sticks with it. What does that mean? Well, he expects his garments to perform and so he doesn't use cheap substitutes. He also keeps his color palette somewhat limited to keep a harmonious look that is somewhat of a signature for him.
    Three, Bond's style never overshadows him. The same is true for you, the clothes shouldn't be wearing you, you should be wearing your clothes.
    Four, Bond moves with the times but leans into classics. Fashion has changed radically since 1962 and every Bond has found a way to move with the fashions. Roger Moore wore a safari suit and flared pants in the 1970s, Pierce Brosnan's Brioni suits and jackets lean more into the looser fit of the 90s versus Daniel Craig in the 2000s used Tom Ford suits with a slimmer and trimmer silhouette. So even though Bond goes with the time, certain elements like the classic suit are always part of his repertoire.
    Five, you don't have to stick to bones color palette and if you're into clothes and you like to play with colors, you can certainly explore a little more, all that matters is that you find something that works for you.
    Six, functional wear doesn't mean it has to be athleisure. Bond is always on the run yet you never see him in Lululemon pants.
    Number seven, know the style rules and then break them as they suit you. Bond definitely breaks certain style rules and we don't suggest you make all of them but still, knowing what it is and then intentionally deciding not to follow it is much better than not having a clue in the first place.
    Style number eight, dress for the occasion. Bond is typically well attired. He wears a tuxedo when it calls for it, he wears a suit when he shows up at MI6, and he wears a down jacket and boots when it's cold outside. Understanding your surroundings and the purpose of your clothes always help you to dress through a right level, depending on your occasion.
    Number nine, the basics will always look good whether it's a pair of dark denim, a dark suit, a white shirt, a white pocket square or a knit tie, these are all staples in your wardrobe that you can combine with lots of different outfits and they work for Bond and they will work for you too.
    Rule number ten, when in doubt, wear a jacket. I would say that Bond, more often than not, wears a jacket, whether it's a suit jacket, a blazer, a sport coat, a safari jacket or maybe a down jacket. He just wears something because it pulls his looks together and he's more complete that way.
    Finally, last but not least, James Bond embraces the suit. James Bond chooses to wear it because it gives him dignity, authority, and competence. The suit is the classic hyper masculine garment that communicates power and authority, at the same time, I believe he wears it because it makes him feel good and respected.

    Here’s a thought: Bond may be wearing a belt with a 3-piece because he’s carrying a gun. If he’s using an ITW holster, he has to wear a belt. He has used a shoulder holster quite often, but this could be a detail that justifies the use of a belt.

      I concur! An IWB holster requires a belt. A lot of people who don't work with firearms are unfamiliar with the need for secure placement while wearing a pistol. A holster shouldn't flop around at all, both for reasons of concealment and for speed & ease of draw. This detail may not be apparent in movies.

    One thing to note is that Bond started wearing Rolex due to it being functional. A robust diving watch for an ex-Navy spy is a good fit, after all. Nowadays it is product placement, but the category of watch is the same.

    • @seikibrian8641
      @seikibrian8641 4 роки тому +10

      @phillipmoodie9071 4 роки тому +9

      @@seikibrian8641 They really needed the market exposure, because up until 1970 Omega had been the market leader for about half a century. In the late 1980s my late wife was responsible for a group of about 130 Jewelry shops, the largest group in Australia. When she gave me a gold Omega Seamaster for my 50th birthday she said that Omega had a very special pricing deal for all of the shops staff nationwide, because those people had a massive grass roots influence on general market sales. She said that the CEO of Omega told her that they were reviving their presence at shop staff level in preparation for a massive global advertising campaign. The product placement in the Bond movies flowed from that campaign, that included Australia, which because of its global success in a wide range of sports, had always been an important market for Omega. I think also with things like his choice of sports watch and a simplified colour palette, it would also make sense for someone like Bond who's travelling a lot (or for someone taking style tips maybe someone who's travelling a lot for business) to have much less to pack, so a couple of suits and shirt combos which all complement each other and not having an entire watch box to take with him is an advantage for just packing for perhaps carry on baggage.
    Ideally you wouldn't want to wear a sport watch with the more formal end, but if your plan for the evening potentially involves diving off an exploding boat then something with 200m or more water resistance is going to effect your choice.

As a news reporter, for flexibility, I usually wear a shirt and tie (I know, not the best, but works in my profession), but I am seen to be more respected than my counterparts who show up in bad ruffled polos and jeans and bad sneakers/boots. I have also had the comment before, "you're the only guy I know that shows up to a house fire in a shirt and tie." Ha ha. The other thing I notice is when I wear suit/shirt/tie, I get the comment "What's the occasion?" I say "it's a weekday." ;)

    Bond wears a coat for a prosaic reason; he carries a gun. Both belt and shoulder holster mandate wearing something covering them; the front pocket holsters for undernourished handguns also have a distinctive signature partially masked by the bottom of a coat.

    I loved this video. It is a great subject matter. Two of my favorite style icons are Steve McQueen and James Bond. However, I would like to make a little correction. Twice you showed a clip from the movie Skyfall and said that Bond sometimes wears a down jacket. That was not a down jacket. That was a Barbour waxed cotton jacket.

    • @phillipmoodie9071
      @phillipmoodie9071 4 роки тому +1

      @Ron Pruitt. The Barbour jacket was also loved by motorbike enthusiasts. But I preferred very solid leather coat style jackets, because they didn't shred if you parted company with the bike and went sliding down the road. But a leather motorcycle coat of that quality was twice the price of a Barbour, and in winter it was twice as warm. Phil.

    The belt was probably an accident, but it is an absolute necessity for someone carrying weapons and fighting. I’m former military, former law enforcement, and have carried a gun, extra magazines, a flashlight and a knife with me nearly all day, every day, since I turned 21. I wouldn’t be able to carry those tools, nor fight effectively, if I didn’t wear a sturdy belt with my three piece suits. Moreover, the vest is great for covering up concealed weapons without printing (showing the outline of the weapon through the clothing).

    Connery loved Grenadine silk ties (in gray, navy, or black) and 2-button single-breasted jackets. And, he used Saville Row tailors for many outfits.
    Roger Moore favored double-breasted and bolder ties. Obviously, Moore had huge collars, lapels, and ties.
    Brosnan favored double-breasted jackets, especially in gray. The roomy fit was very late 90s. Everything being Brioni, he and Connery are widely considered the best dressed.
    Craig wore tight fitting Tom Fords, frequently. He wore very normal gray, navy, and black frequently.

    He wears a jacket to conceal his pistol in a shoulder holster. When he isn't wearing a jacket, it's in an ankle holster. Bond's style is calculated to draw attention to him. Like a stage magician he distracts, sets up and performs tricks that leave you confounded.

    James Bond's watches are chosen for they are very heavy-duty diving watches, that are perfect for the character. The first was the Rolex Explorer (with that on the wrist, Hillary went on the Everest); than they passed to the Omega Speedmaster (it went on the Moon).

    I'm surprised the shirt you're wearing doesn't have the Bond cuff (French cuff with buttons) as seen in the early Bond films with Connery and Lazenby.
    Up until the last Connery bond, James wore bespoke suits, which needs to be able to hide the shoulder holster for the Walther PPk (considered a ladies' pistol: meaning it's smaller, lighter and perfect for close action). His particular holster is under the armpit and behind the ribs ( not in the FBI style of side piece where the handle creates a bulge near the chest) so the suit jacket needs to be cut in order to conceal it but drape well to appear natural.
    I like how it's a video of Bond styling rather than another "Who wore it best" video (Lazenby hands down by the way).
    You guys never disappoint. Thanks for sharing.

    This may be an American notion, and possibly "not correct", but while I absolutely love classic menswear, Sven hit on something about *functional* menswear that I believe can take you out of a suit without necessarily placing you into a too-casual jeans & polo, or causing you to sacrifice style. For me and my military background that spells *tactical menswear* like the 5.11 brand. These aren't camouflage fatigues, but subdued or natural tones with a military cut to the trousers very like what police and paramedics wear on-duty now. Tactical trousers typically feature very durable fabrics, more than 4 pockets, heavy duty belt loops that help support a tactical nylon operator's belt with a "cobra buckle". These trousers may come in navy, black, light gray, charcoal, dark brown, khaki tan, coyote brown, and olive or forest green. You can either wear these with a polo shirt for a more toned-down, civilian vibe or you can wear them with a tactical duty shirt which also emulates a police or paramedic uniform shirt with pleated pockets with button-down flaps, and crisp perma-creased wash-and-wear blended performance fabrics that along with the trousers create a strong sense of professionalism, ruggedness, and strength. For men with a decent physique, it conveys the "man of action" aura that most men appreciate, and turns women's eyes. This type of clothing is perfectly suited for active and outdoor lifestyles, and may be worn with virtually any kind of footwear. It's far from suit and tie, but I believe that this style allows you to look great and still get things done without having to worry about ripping a seam or getting a tear. In short, it's everything a man needs when your work or leisure are not compatible with a suit.

As with this video and others, I have noticed that your trousers often look a trifle short. In my opinion they would look better if they sat on the instep of the shoe forming a small fold on the crease of the trousers. At least, that is the way I like to wear them or am I out of touch with modern times? Thank you, Rodney (74 year old).

    Before I retired (RCR) I'd make it a habit to wear a black suit with either a red shirt and black tie, or a black shirt and red tie. It was my way of showing my dominance over the other brokers/traders and it worked like a charm. People would refer to me as the guy who looked like the devil. And not for nothing that getup was a prize winner when chasing (or rather being chased) by women in bars. I think my experience coincides with some of what you're saying here. Of course I wore wing tips and a red pocket square.
