I unknowingly was dressing in this style since the late 90’s and I will add that a big part of my aesthetic is wearing underwear as clothes. So bustiers and pretty bras under sheer tops or wrap tops but also buying petticoats either skirts or dresses and dying them or getting them in black and just going ham with accessories is a super easy entry into this style with things you can get anywhere.
I love that!! I’ve found some really pretty satin and lace cami tops from Fredrick’s of Hollywood which I remember from that era which look cute over white t’s or turtle necks if you remember that trend. I had bought a bustier with the original tags from there in a beautiful teal color I wanted to style but was sadly too small on me.
"I like space" hahaha! That's me! I have sun and moon/stars tattoos on my feet and never realized I would have to explain about them so much. For 2 decades 😆
Haha yeah I think the sun and moon with faces is a thing that has been around for a while. I think it gets lumped into the aesthetic of astrology and tarot because it appeals to people who like both. But I remember my dad having a lot of sun things in the 90’s and he isn’t into astrology or tarot because you know … satanic panic and all that 😂 (I wasn’t even allowed to have pokemon cards and couldn’t play final fantasy)
It wasn't until I was in my late 20s when I realized where my love of moons came from: CareBears! My favorite was BedTime Bear. I still have my stuffed baby BedTime from the 80s. He is all worn and well loved with beautiful moon and star embroidery on his tummy. The 80s were rad! 💙🌛
Yes to whimsigoth wardrobe tour! I struggle finding this style in plus size. I kept a couple pieces from the 90s but can’t fit into them so that doesn’t help lol!
For inspiration for male whimsigoth is look at some music artist like Prince and David Bowie al la Labarynth (1989). These men had groupies screaming for them and wore very feminine clothes, even wearing womens blouses, perfume, and makeup. 80s glam rock is similar in this way too.
Gen X here...we kinda invented that whole style! And it's supposed to be eclectic and unique, because we were ALL ABOUT the thrifting! (Anti-fashion/consumerism and all...). And it lends itself to some really practical and comfortable looks. Like a cute flowy dress with Doc Marten's. Some more good brands: Wild Fable, Torrid, Philosophy. But yeah, it's really about whatever you score at a thrift store!
Oh yeah for sure - the media people reference was at its peak popularity during Gen X’s college years. I feel like this nostalgia about these years and the rise of its popularity with this fashion is especially common among millennials and elder gen z because we grew up watching those shows as kids, and the people in our lives that dressed this way were either our older siblings or our baby sitters who we looked up to and thought were so cool. I think with how things are going in the world, a lot of us really want to channel that cool, rebellious but ethereal quality. Especially as more people are waking up to the harm of capitalism and consumerism (which is why it feels so weird and disingenuous to see fast fashion cash in on the trend).
@DressMeUpScotty oh for sure! And yeah, us Gen Xers are used to bucking trends and fashion (like with grunge and whmsigoth) only for big corporations to copy us. [Flips hair] what can we say, they're obsessed with us! (Lol!)😎
Just in case you (or anyone else) hadn’t heard and might want to buy doc martens in future, the quality has really gone downhill 😢 These days the only hope is secondhand but there’s some other brands that people are moving to instead! If I remember correctly Solovair is one?
@@EmL-kg5gn That's right. I just bought a pair second hand - one of the post '90s cheaper quality - and they are not great. But Solovair was the OG manufacturer for Doc Marten's, and their "Made in England" line is still apparently up to quality.
Oh my gosh I would *love* a whimsigoth wardrobe tour. Also, every time I watch your videos I get a sudden urge to go thrifting because it gives me so much inspiration (and false hope, my local goodwill is really bad) 😅 but I can still dream
I definitely lean more Victorian (some of the whimsy is a little too young for me if you know what I mean. Since I was actually a teen in the 70s I have to be careful to not look dated as opposed to vintage or retro) I love velvet, brocade, jacquard, chiffon & dark colors like purple & indigo & black or rich colors like rust & moss green. Hanky hems-check. Lettuce hems-check. Bell or Lantern sleeves especially with puff shoulder & tonal embroidery or lace-check. I now live in Idaho where it is cold enough to actually wear my velvet pieces unlike Roseville. In the Summer I go more Boho & prefer lighter sage greens, white/off white, lighter denim blues, etc. I still wear black too just not as much & I'vbeen trying to get other dark colors in my wardrobe besides black all the time. Been really into deep, rich brown lately & it's actually a trending color this season so Yay! For guys or male presenting/andogynous inspo just check out Jimmi Hendrix or any British rock star from 1968. All those guys were wearing velvet, satin, lace shirts, paisley & florals & stripes & lots of ascots & hats & fur coats. I liked the male fashions of the 60s more than the female tbh. Love me a velvet pantsuit 😊
Oh yes I have to agree with your assessment about the male fashion from the 60’s and 70’s and looking at the rock stars from those eras for inspo. Their fashion was so good! They were so creative and expressed themselves so immaculately: they created some amazing looks with amazing visual interest! It’s always a delight seeing the newer generations channeling those looks, which reminds me of the creator I mentioned Antique.Aquarius - totally gives me a 60s/70s rockstar vibes!
I was also a teenager in the 1970s! I live in western Oregon, and have always dressed more colorfully, feminine-leaning, and yes, whimsically in the summer than the winter. This year, due to a number of lifestyle changes, plus volunteering at the local humane society thriftstore, I have decided to carry my more creative summer style into the winter. It has been fun putting together what I like to think as Witchcore Plus! Plus= collegiate/professorial, and more whimsical lagenlook layers as well. I still have "ready to go on a hike in the rain" PNW clothes that I wear of course, but making them a bit more lively than in the past!
@DressMeUpScotty I love your content and it's very inspiring as I'm looking at all my clothes! Though I do now have the urge to get them back out again and make outfits.... 😆😆❤️
Great video!! Always look forward to them! I would also say learning basic hand sewing skills is crucial. A lot of pieces are *almost* perfect, but are missing buttons/zippers. Or maybe the neckline is not what you want, or the garment is too long or too short. Maybe the dress is perfect, but it just needs to be dyed a different color. It’s all about seeing potential. Layering is also super important. And using things in creative ways that deviate from the original purpose. Ex. Using a skirt as a top. Using a poncho as a skirt layer. Wearing leg warmers as sleeves for a sleeveless dress.
My dad was a full on reinassance/medieval revival flamboyant hippie in the 70's and I think most of the clothing he wore then would be found in the womens' section of the thrift stores nowadays so that was a great tip for thrifting masc clothing. Some of his stuff perfectly flatters my feminine body and curves because stuff was very slim fit and well tailored for men back in the days (and I'm a bit bigger than he was back then). I think I got my love for this style from my 70's hippie parents and the fact that I'm a child of the 90's who loved all the witchy things from then.
P.S. If you live in a town that has an Assistance League thrift store (many cities do), they have a rack called "Holiday Preview" around this time of year. It is full of anything velvet, sparkly, lacy, etc. I about lost my mind last time I went there.
I find searching for Dark Mori Kei can help sometimes! There’s a ton of crossover there with cute and witchy, almost cottagecore but not, edgy looks/items
I very vividly remeber this style of fashion from my childhood and teen years. I myself sprinkled some elements to my own wardrobe circa 2004-2007, when I was still trying to find my personal style ❤

@kikisworkshop6327 I think some masc whimsigoth icons are Johnny Depp and basically the cast of the OG Interview With the Vampire movie! Very New Romantics, with some boho vibes and lots of jewelry.
haha, I have many tops, skirts & dresses from Pyramid. Priced better than Holy Clothing (but not as much selection if you want tonal soutache trim on rayon) I miss their Halloween catalog-great clothing quality pieces & accessories. They still carry some of it but a lace up velvet witch dress for $100 plus shipping is probably more than most people want to spend on a costume. I sold my purple & black velvet witch dress this past Oct on FB Marketplace since it was now a sz or 2 too small. If you watch their clearance & get on their text list, they regularly have 15% & 20% off sales.
Haha I’m glad you appreciate that 😂 I sometimes spend far too long searching for clips 🙊🙈 I get hyper focused on it when I know I remember a line or a moment or something but can’t find it.
Also a great brand to look for is Per Una. Their modern stuff doesn't look that interesting, but their 2000's pieces are perfect for whimsigothic and fairycore styles

The Pyramid Collection is surprisingly still around but not nearly as filled with whimsigoth clothing as it used to be. Still ridiculously expensive tho.

I dress this way a lot and wear dresses most of the time. I get some fun looks from the cookie cutter moms when I pick my kids up from school lol….I don’t let it bother me because I’m 44 so I frankly just don’t care anymore. I’m just me.
@@DressMeUpScotty I’m pretty sure their shipping takes forever because they custom dye and alter their pieces after you order them;; don’t quote me on that though. I’ve been hard yearning over their masculine line.
Merci la vidéo est très intéressante mais son doublage audio automatique la rend difficile à écouter... Je reste adepte des audios originaux voir avec sous titres écrits si besoin
I think it’s UA-cam doing that automatically when the website is set to that language, it’s done that to several people now. You can go in and change it back to English with subtitles. I think it’s a recent update they did with the auto dubbing and I’m not a fan of it myself. It sounds so robotic and kinda creepy lol. I’m gonna see if I can disable the auto dubbing or at least make it go to the original language first.
It’s the stupid new AI audio translation - I did not green light that I assure you. UA-cam did this to all of us 😭 feel free to set it back to the original audio because if you have your app set to any language but English it adds a terrible ai generated auto translation 😭 I tried to turn it off but it won’t let me.
@@isabelquintana4435 You’re good didn’t sound rude at all! I’m also a little weirded out by the AI translation lol. Also the fact that we can do that now, sounds like something from Star Trek 😂 (universal translator)

Omg it’s been doing that!! It did it to someone else who has the app set to Spanish. I’m wondering if I can adjust to where it won’t do that. It’s so weird. I checked out the languages and it sounds soooo weird 😂
OK, so basically every piece of clothing I have that is not in pastel colors fits in your definition of whimsigoth, got it.
Haha exactly 😂 since it crosses over so much with different styles, especially those that are “whimsi” - definitely see that.
I dress this way a lot and wear dresses most of the time. I get some fun looks from the cookie cutter moms when I pick my kids up from school lol….I don’t let it bother me because I’m 44 so I frankly just don’t care anymore. I’m just me.
Honestly, they’re probably jealous because you look STUNNING serving looks.
@ aww, thank you!
Holy clothing. Bad name, great clothes. And size inclusive
I’m super curious about them, I know a lot of my Ren Faire friends have stuff from them, I just heard their shipping takes forever.
Wtf was that spanish dub 😭
It’s the stupid new AI audio translation - I did not green light that I assure you. UA-cam did this to all of us 😭 feel free to set it back to the original audio because if you have your app set to any language but English it adds a terrible ai generated auto translation 😭 I tried to turn it off but it won’t let me.
No se por qué pero se reprodujo en español y fue la peor experiencia de mis oídos
Someone else mentioned there is an auto translated audio track and it sounds so uncanny. I didn’t even know they were auto translating audio.
@@DressMeUpScotty It's okay! It was also a surprise to me, sorry if a sounded rude! Great video tho! Can't wait to expand my style! 🥰
@@isabelquintana4435 You’re good didn’t sound rude at all! I’m also a little weirded out by the AI translation lol. Also the fact that we can do that now, sounds like something from Star Trek 😂 (universal translator)
I put all my visual aid cards into a Google drive folder for anyone who wants to download any of them:
