Every aspect of this trick revolved around the number 7. okay so i think there's some logic behind this just hear me out...
so when asked to pick a number 5-12 we automatically know from basic arithmetic that 5+7=12 so 5+x=12 and from that connection our minds would usually go straight into picking the number 7. It's entirely this. The maths and having to do them "fast" beforehand gets your brain geared to quickly process the relationship between the two numbers he shows each time. So when it sees "5" and "12" the most natural conclusion is...

It's not magic, just math. Since you add and subtract the age you kissed, the answers is always 9. He just gave poor instructions, resulting in Ethan getting all confused.

I noticed that, playing along as a girl, my final number wasn't 9, so I figured Ethan only included the directions for guys in this video because that's what was relevant for him. So God help me I went and watched the original video from Rick Lax. The equation for the girl version is equally simple. Again replacing your age with x, the equation is: (X+3+5-X)*2-7. Simplified, that's just (3+5)2-7, which of course equals 9.
Also, in the actual video, he pauses a lot to give people time to do the math. I think that this, along with different equations for different genders, is actually an intentional strategy to make it look like magic. The more time that passes and the more numbers their are flying around, the easier it is for people to get confused and forget what math they have already done. If they can't remember what the actual equation was, they won't realize how easy it was for him to "predict" their number.

It's based on psychology he shows us every number option except 7. When he tells us to pick a number, we tend to try to think of a "unique" number so we subconsciously pick the one number we didn't see. It's not really picking a random number, but it's still got a chance to fail. Tricks still kinda lame thou, people do real crazy shit with the same idea. Regardless, love the video! Big fan
First one is psychology (which I fell for). The first three problems are adding and subtracting. The reason why its quick is to give you the mindset of doing math. So when he quickly says pick a number between 5 and 12 you subconsciously do these two things (most likely). People have a tendency to pick 1 of three categories. Higher, lower, or middle. Now that doesn't really clear anything up since you can choose according to those categories 5,6,8,11, or 12. (Larger ranges less chance). Also notice I didn't say seven. Here is the second thing you are already in the mindset of math so when you either do what's 5 plus some number to get 12 or 12 minus 5 to get some number its gonna be 7. You subconsciously do that in your head so you think well that's not in any of the ranges above so I'll say that because it will catch him off guard. Now obviously everyone does not do that thought process. It also only really works when you do it fast with easy problems like he did.

Most people will pick 7 because 12 - 5 = 7. And after being asked some basic math questions, your brain will automatically include mathematics in your decision to pick a "random" number between 5 and 12. I thought I should bring this up not to educate people, but to fulfill my own need to be considered intelligent by others. Papa Bless!
