  • Run-n-gunners can come in a few different flavors. Pixelheart's Tanuki Justice takes a streamlined, ultrafast approach combining sharp control, double-jumping and eight-way aim with platforming and tough enemy and environmentl hazard-strewn gauntlets. But how does it stack up?

    Watching you stream this, it didn't occur to me to think of it as a run & gun, but I can see that. It looked like a meeting point between Shinobi and Kid Niki to me. Definitely looks like fun, though!

      Yeah looks like a hybrid of those types of titles somewhat but seems pretty fun either way. May have to check it out , nice visuals.

    This is a great mix of Shinobi (system memory-based firing rate) and NES era Ninja Gaiden (movement speed). It's good to see more games like this returning to the modern offerings, and I think your spot on about the fairness in difficulty. Too many retro-mod games rely on a dev vs. community system to force players to use methods that go against their natural instincts to succeed (ala Demon Souls + Sekiro). That's why so many nostalgic indie fan service games end up in the junk pile.

    In tough retro games a limited rewind function as an easy mode would go a long way to attract new players

      The recent release of Gleylancer reinforces this statement.

    I have this. Reminds me of Ninja-Kun a bit. They also did something a little similar in the first Retro Game Challenge on the DS. I highly recommend that you check out that game! It's like a nostalgia burst of multiple games all in one.

    The art is so weird. There's bits of Revenge of Shinobi, Shinobi 3, and a bunch of PC Engine games in there.

    Great review! These games are perfect for the switch. If it goes on sale then I'd get it on PS4. I need a damn Switch!

    Did you say muted colour palette? Eh? That’s not what I’m seeing

    • @StudioMudprints
      @StudioMudprints  2 роки тому

      Slightly muted. PC Engine and Super NES have richer colour than this game.

    I don't know if you have played them (especially considering the name of this series) but have you played the two shmup spinoffs of the parody RPG series Epic Battle Fantasy called Bullet Heaven?

    • @StudioMudprints
      @StudioMudprints  3 роки тому

      I'm well aware of the Bullet Heaven games, but I'm not sure I could be 100% objective about them, as our series predates those games; I had put in a decent amount of research when applying a name to the show back in '09, and would have abandoned the title if it had already existed to avoid confusion and/or trademark infringement.

    Your “fucking dumb” comment on the score-clearing pause mechanic elicited a chuckle. To be clear your comment wasn’t dumb! Btw, are you gonna review Neko Navy on Switch? It was an honorable mention on 2019’s greatest 25 shmups on the shmup forum so it is maybe worth a look?

      I may, but it might only be via a livestream.

      @@StudioMudprints Esp.Ra.De too. I just got it from the Japanese Switch eshop and I’m pretty lost! It was fun figuring out how to search for it with the kanji keyboard, that was sorta my main goal, getting the actual game was more of a bonus. Now I’m trying to figure out how to turn on the hitbox indicator using the foreign settings menus.

    considering pause buffering is a well known way of cheesing these kinds of games i don't think having scores not count if you pause is 'fucking dumb' at all.

    Just as I suspected.. another rehashed retro "inspired" release that brings nothing new to the table.

    • @MrRawnch
      @MrRawnch 3 роки тому +1

      It may appear that way at face value. However, if it stays true to the genre it's inspired from with no gimmick -- it could be a refreshing title to add to the library. Too many retro "inspired" games suffer from a rushed foundation because the devs are too eager to introduce what's new. I think that could be said of any established genre.
      Edit - I agree the forfeited pause system makes me scratch my head and is dumb. It would make sense if the system was only tied to a speed run option, and I think assuming people will focus purely on speed running is overly ambitious.

    • @Heyjuststfu
      @Heyjuststfu 3 роки тому

      If it's retreaded and rehashed game design that's sticking to what's already been done before, how can it in any way be refreshing? This game has been made a hundred times, only now with a new trendy coat of paint. It's derivative, it's played out, and it's not even as good as the games that it's copying. But hey.. nostalgia and all that.

    • @MrRawnch
      @MrRawnch 3 роки тому +2

      The highlight of the review is around the core mechanics (controls), that allow players to focus on the content. The majority of copycat retro games fail at this alone. They get your attention visually but you know something is off when you pick it up.
      Apple pie is nothing new. Heck, I can buy one at Sam's Club. However, enjoying one that someone has put time and effort into is refreshing in that sense.

    • @Heyjuststfu
      @Heyjuststfu 3 роки тому +2

      I applaud the developers for making a 2D action platformer that isn't a laggy, uncontrollable floaty mess. Good on them. I have no issues there.

      Look up Battle Axe. Pixel art, retro, modern retro, and simple mindless fun are all the rage now. Games that call back to the past while still providing enough modern conventions that the old NES games could never dream of, which often extended play through little more than cheap deaths and challenge. Meanwhile AAA games like Avengers, that spend buckets of money, either flop or get lost in the sea of the hundreds of other such games coming out at the same time, and that have already long ago desensitized us to their realistic graphics and constant noise and motion.
