    What an amazing way to describe how to get over the stigma. It really is ignorance that is feeding the stigma in society! We need to start talking about mental illness as we would any other illness of the body! Thank you so much for sharing John!

    Comforting thought...you've been through it and you're gonna get through it again! ❤ Life is a journey through the good and the bad. I think the bad times are there to make the good times sweeter and the realization how blessed you are. Wisdom is gained from lessons learned.

    I like how matter of fact he is about it and I like how he talks about the solution as being so “simple”. It makes it far less threatening and scary.

    Thank 👏 You 👏 So👏 Much 👏!!
    Those of us who have to live with this chemical imbalance not only have to work hard to stay mentally healthy and, at the same time, fight (or are stressed about) the stigma that we face in society.

    I am just a year older than JRB and--like him--have been experiencing symptoms of mental illness since I was a young child. In my case I have GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorder) coupled with depressive episodes, and social anxiety disorder. I am amazed that the stigma still goes on. Having said that, I don't discuss my mental illness at work other than on a need-to-know basis as I am a very private person. I am also hypoglycemic and don't discuss that outside of a need-to-know basis either.

    I was diagnosed with anxiety and panic disorder in my 30s, as well. Took me being rushed to the ER with heart attack symptoms to get to that diagnosis. Just reflected that I had my first panic attack at 4 years old. It was a big one and not the only one of my childhood. Families sometimes just want it to go away, especially after traumatic abuse, but it needs diagnosis, understanding and treatment. There are a great many of us, it's like any medical issue, we just need to get over the stigma and get honest about it.

    this is exactly how I had to cope. My husband has often used diabetes and a lack of insulin as an example to explain depression to others. This video is so correct. thank you so much. also love you tbbt and speechless. my family is the similar. I'm a mom of three with my oldest, teenage daughter having autism, adhd, and oppositional defiance disorder.

    This is a real in your face video. It is so true. I can relate to everything he is saying because I too suffer from depression and a panic disorder. It is such an isolated and lonely path, because no one will share what they are going through, and the doctors that I saw were clueless. Wish I had seen this 40 years ago.

    Amazing explanation. He must have an amazing mind to be able to overcome this chemical imbalance. To me, it shows me how more capable we are, much more than we think we normally are.

    Wow thank you so much John! I've never thought of my depression as a "Crazy uncle"that's so cool!! :) I have anxiety that gets really bad, but I'm learning to deal with it :) I'm not scare of the medication but it hurts me when people tell me that I'm too young to be taking them, or that they don't work... that's a really mean thing to say to somebody with a mental illness... I love Berry in The Big Bang Theory and your fights with Sheldon! it's so cool to see someone you look up to talk about problems that you have... thanks so much!!

    SSRI and SNRI are affective in conjunction with therapy. I think that in America these are readily prescribed without proficient therapy alongside (as this is difficult to undertake). There are side affects to taking prescriptions such as tolerance builds as well as affecting therapy itself (never learning to cope with symptoms), CBT can be really affective to treat these disorders but i think it's fair to have a balanced view and not just jump straight to medication as the first and last line of treatment.

    This video makes perfect sense and that realization of it being this familiar thing we can again recapture dominance or control over is really enlightening and powerful insight.. I loved reading The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook, it sounds cheesy as hell but it's seriously exactly what he's talking about in terms of actualizing and representing these sets of feelings/mood changes that prompt this- making it very real power in ones favor

    We are suppose to talk about things like... feeling suicidal or feelings haunting you of self harm..... YET... when I do, I'm accused of "threatening" to do something or of trying to cause a drama, or of being manipulative ... so... the end result is... I ... stop... talking!

    • @memyselfi2005
      @memyselfi2005 Рік тому +1

      I don’t have supportive people
      To talk to either. It helps me to put all my thoughts and feelings into a journal. It’s not perfect, but it saves me from reaching out to others who I know will end up making me feel worse, and therapy is too expensive.

    Crazy Uncle Depression. Exactly. You just get on with it while you wait for him to leave. (After you've "beat" him, I mean. Before that -- before the doctors, the meds, the counseling, whatever your cocktail is -- he kicks your butt. But after you kick _his_ butt, he comes by, you roll your eyes and wait for your crazy racist uncle to go home.)

    What a disappointment! I thought he has a speech defect as Barry Kripke in BBT and it wasn't fake :( It is adorable! Barry's defect not speech defects as itself. SPEAKERS WITH ENGLISH AS NATIVE LANGUAGE: Hi :) I have a question: How often are you using the word "impediment" as (speech) impediment? Maybe I've been using "speech defect" incorrectly? And it is rude?

    • @Guenter34
      @Guenter34 5 років тому

      I use the word impediment for any type of speech that isn't deemed "normal". So even for his lisp I'd say he has a speech impediment.
