    Definitely what my playing needs :) I can build nice melodies in key, but knowing how to 'land' the phrases is my next challenge. I can find the best notes by ear, but it often means 2 or 3 extra notes at the end of the phrase as I'm working out where that good note is. Time to develop a better awareness of the scale degrees in each pattern I think 😀

They also allow demonstrations that no other method could achieve. The explanations are also a model of clarity and steady progression point by point. Your video is a big help to me. With the enormity of scale tones available, it's really hard not to get lost. Having a structure to start with will help me create phrases with more confidence.
    My question is this: When applying this to a chord progression, are you thinking of the 1, 3, 5 in the other chords or are you thinking of them as the intervals within the major scale? For instance, the V chord in C Major is G and is made up of the 5th, 7th and 2nd of that scale. I'm using the E shape which is your example in the video.

    this is a great video and very informative but in my experience as a music teacher I find hat its better for most students to start with more linear phrasing when they are first learning to create melodies bc other wise they seem to just kind of jump around the scale with no reason and it sounds random. Also , on the guitar its not obvious to beginners how to go up and down the scale in one position so its important to get used to that. Again ;great video and I love the channel. Just a thought.

  • @fretjamdotcom
    @fretjamdotcom  11 років тому

    No, but this is a good place to start as they are the "safest" tones to rest on over their related chords. Once you get to know how scales interact with chords a bit better, you can start building phrases around other tones in the scale. The reason I focused on triads is because they exist in every scale, so you can always rely on them as safe points in your solos.

  • @LohTek
    @LohTek 14 років тому

    I'll go one even further, When I first asked you for an indepth guide to phrasing back in 09 I was extremely frustrated with my attempts to understand and use the major scale to solo, I eventually got frustrated to the point where it inspired me to use my frustration of using the scale to master the scale by using obscene "phrases" which I wont repeat here, I ended up writing a slash metal song using 2 chords and triad triplets.

  • @LohTek
    @LohTek 14 років тому

    Now we have the fundementals, all we need to do is add the "phrase" to phrasing, which is to say to yourself a phrase which can convay emotion, We know that music is a journey from the tonic around the scale and returning to the tonic in circle. This "middle area" is where phrasing comes in, such as you can give different emotion to a simple three note lick by the phrase you use, by saying the words "I AM ANGRY!" produces a much different feel than "I am happy" experiment with this.

    @fretjamdotcom Yeah, that term comes from the little digital drum machine I use to practice with, I call it robot rock because you can only choose between 4/4 quarter notes, 8/4, and 16/4 sixteenth notes it is incapable of using a mix of quarter notes and eighth notes.

  • @jambautista9202
    @jambautista9202 6 років тому

    For me studying scale is knowing the formula then practice from the formula, cmaj scale form is C,D,E,F,G,A,B but the formula used in this video is C,D,E,F#,A,B for everyone who is just starting to learn scale i suggest you stick with the formula on major which is indicated above and minor C,D,D#,F,G,G#,A# on the key of C, and before you study 7key scale i would suggest you start with pentatonic scale to blues scale because they're so much alike, you just 1 key on the formula to make a pentatonic scale a blues scale.

  • @LohTek
    @LohTek 14 років тому

    Just a clarification, I dont mean that I used two chords to create the song, I mean 2 chords as in D2, A2 power chords. The point being that "phrasing" is a powerful tool to harness your frustrations with learning the scales/disappointment at work/whatever is bothering you to write music and make playing enjoyable and powerfully meaningful for you if you so desire.

    I thought if we were in C minor bar cord shape @ the 8th. fret.
    And we wanted to play the Dorian scale, one would start on 10th. fret the D note, on E 6th. string.
    Dorian is the second note or scale/cord of the C major scale and I know it's a minor scale. So why does this not apply to the Dorian scale in your diagram?

    • @davidberkowatz3933
      @davidberkowatz3933 6 років тому

      Despite these both being in C (key centre of C, not the Key of C major) the parent scales these modes originate from is different.
      C Ionian is the first mode of the Key of C major .
      C Dorian is the second mode of the Key of Bb major.
      If you were to start the Dorian mode in first position (the second diagram) on the tenth fret like you claimed we'd actually be playing in D Dorian (second mode of C major).
      Hope this helps.

    • @HeavyInstinct

    Different between pharasing and filler? Explain plz

    • @fretjamdotcom
      @fretjamdotcom  5 років тому +1

      Well I think of musical phrases in a similar way to written or spoken sentences. We have sequences of words that communicate a thought or expression and then resolve and stop. In that sense, any sequence of unbroken notes you play can be considered a phrase. The musical equivalent of a full stop is holding or emphasising a note longer than the notes leading up to it and is often a chord tone. And of course you can also have moments of silence between notes which gives a sequence of notes a kind of containment that could be called a phrase.

  • @LohTek
    @LohTek 14 років тому

    @fretjamdotcom Technique is important, "phrasing" is about adding emotional depth through technique, after all your solo wont be very good if you played the whole song just using quarter notes, You would have what I call robot rock. The use of an actual phrase tells your fingers the direction, speed, and technique to use.
