Hey, this video game has animated monkeys, which reminds me of Taron Egerton in Sing, which reminds me of the talking cgi gorilla in Dolittle voiced by Rami Malek, which reminds me of [REDACTED]
I don't like that the Wii U gamepad was not utilized for diddly squat, and I don't like that the very end levels end in a choice of two instead of a single finale level Otherwise yeah perfect game
Underrated channel jumpscare, ya love to see it! I adore this game (Tropical Freeze sweeps it though), and this list was a wonderful swing down memory lane. Here are my thoughts as a certified Dong enjoyer: -Jungle’s a rock-solid start for this game, providing a vibrant playground of green and dozens of scummy new creatures. Screaming pillars, funny walking shrubs, depressed hawks. I played Secluded Shore at a friend’s house and it’s what introduced me to this game’s existence. Silhouette levels were a stroke of genius. -Beach is my personal favorite, speaking as somebody who REALLY loves marine biology and the oceans. You may not get to swim, but you get weird flying jellies and pirate crabs, so… worthy trade. Tidal Terror absolutely whooped me as a kid and conquering that fear (and the level itself) felt incredible. -I agree with you on not being that into the Ruins, maybe that’s just because child me heard a playground rumor that World 3 was “Waterfall” and I got let down seeing a bunch of rubble instead of a crashing cascade. Hey, I like my water. -Cave may be my favorite thematically, but what kills it for me is that there’s barely any platforming. You get some during the start of 4-1, but after that you’re forced to speed through all the pretty scenery on a cart or rocket for the rest of the world. It gets points for Crowded Cavern though, as bats are my all-time favorite animals. Also that KONG level was pure CBT. -Forest has gorgeous music and I kinda like how bizarre Mangoruby is, but it doesn’t feel like it really reached its peak potential. I also somehow never realized that Muncher Mayhem had you chased by spiders. The WHOLE time I thought it was ants… even though you see their eggs, and there’s spider architecture everywhere. -Cliff was my least-favorite vibes-wise, as all the pollution and tar made me sad and I was never that into dinosaurs. I am, however, into skeletons and the enemies are great in this world. Mad solid platforming, especially on Precarious Plateau. “Precarious” was certainly a fun additions to 10-year-old me’s vocabulary. -Factory is the best world. It’s not even CLOSE, and I say this as somebody who vastly prefers natural settings over man-made ones. Every level stands out aesthetically and gameplay-wise, the switches were wonderful additions to make secret-hunting even more involved for me, and Feathered Fiend is the best song in the game. Music Madness takes silver. -Volcano is a generic pick for a final Nintendo platforming world, but THIS is how you do a volcano. The black glaze of the pumice and delightfully manic energy of those fireball fellas snaking through the orange pools of lava provides a gorgeous set piece for hearing the “Lives Lost” jingle on-loop. Tiki Tong was just alright, but their overworld form looked pretty cool. I liked how you didn’t see their face when losing a life until you actually saw their true form firsthand. -Golden Temple is as energetic and enjoyable as any bone-breaking bonus level should be. A surrealist paradise of pure torture that somehow staves off the weight of your imminent suffering with “Hehe funny floating banana.” What a GOAT game. Thank you for this list, love the vibes here! :D
"No restrictions" and yet the Golden Temple is on last place with only the Wii version being taken into account. For the record, the Nintendo 3DS version (called Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D) expanded the Golden Temple into a full-fledged "Cloud" world with eight more levels (although those levels are themed after the previous worlds rather than using the unique cloud theme). It's very likely that the Switch version will also include these levels, given that many of the other improvements from the 3DS version are present in the Switch version.
Returns was my favorite game as a kid alongside Galaxy 2. But I gotta say Tropical Freeze is even better. Idk what you have against it, it’s basically Returns but even more creative and unique. And the final world is literally the island from Returns but snowy, what’s not to love
18:32 The factory is a consistant thing in the dk series, it was built by the kremlings all the way back in dkc 1 and has remained for the entire series
could we get a video of you talking about Tropical Freeze? I'm actually really invested on what you have to say since I never got around to playing that one. Also I totally agree, Smokey is indeed PEAK
When i was a kid my dad got me this game on the 3ds and personal stuff happened and when i saw it coming on switch and my dad let me pre-order it and when i played it i got so emotional
As someone who also grew up with Returns and is insanely excited to play the Switch port soon, it's really cool getting to hear the opinion of someone else who nostalgic for it! Overall I'd say most of your opinions line with mine, except swap Beach and Jungle around, as Beach is probably one of my favorite worlds in any platformer I've played for very nostalgic reasons. Stormy shore is one of the best levels in a platformer and I will stand by that! Plus the boss tikis of the world, The Maraca Gang hold a very special place in my heart for very personal reasons. Only thing that really surprises me is that you dislike Tropical Freeze, as someone who only recently played it in the last few years It's really good! Especially that last world where every level is a callback to one of the worlds in Returns, Seashore War gave me goosebumps playing it for the first time! Would love to know why you dislike Tropical Freeze if you ever plan of talking about that.
Great video. I was also terrible at this game as a kid. Maybe you should continue your gorilla(z) obsession by ranking types of apes? Gibbons, orangutans, chimpanzees...
Fossil cliffs is by far my favorite world when i was younger and remains to this day, in tropical freeze it turns the level into a blizzard mixed with an avoalanch and the music in both is just beautiful. Fossil cliffs is why i love donkey kong to this day, and funnily enough i learned about donkey kong from walmart way back then when you used to be able to play wii games. Best childhood memories where made with the king of swing himself
I personally like DKCR more than tropical Freeze i like both games tho Returns just is a little higher to me as much as people think tropical freeze is better i still personally like returns more its just more challenging and it definitely is more difficult because it took me a long time to beat returns and i beat freeze in like a week i 100% both to idk they are both amazing games tho
I try not to get too into the weeds when it comes to discourse online, but liking DKC Returns more than Tropical Freeze is a wild take. And on top of that saying you didn’t like TF at all is even crazier. Please explain yourself.
I remember that when I was a kid I was terrified of entering the golden temple (and in fact I never did because I sucked at the game) because it gave me the feeling of being somewhere I wasnt supposed to be
Donkey Kong Country Returns HD actually has 8 extra levels in World 9 based off of the first 8 worlds! These were originally in the 3DS version, but they've been remade(?) in Returns HD.
I started loving DK games with DK 64 but is very cool to see someone who loves Returns and hates Tropical Freeze haha. Why tho? It would be very interesting another top with Tropical Freeze worlds :p
Wow so much nostalgia from this game🥲 This game was so hard when I was a kid, yet it was still so fun for some reason. Awesome video :) Would love to see your ranking on tropical freeze if you're interested in doing that one
Holy shit when I was young I beat the game 100% and after watching this video I just learned what banana juice did I just assumed it turned you into super Kong
i have 200% this game on the 3ds and wii versions it is a based game, but god you are right on the rocket/minecart levels, it doesn't get easier unless you know the level like the back of your palm, once you do get it though, they're exciting as all heck that being said, once you do get good at it, and understand that knowing your momentum can carry you over certain dangers, you spend a lot of the game speeding through the stages, which ironically makes it all easier keep trying, you'll breeze through it in no time Also also, farming lives/coins in this game is easy, each time you complete a level, wait before hitting the goal barrel for the DK sign, time your jump to do it right at the stage between the red balloon and the dk bonus, with practice, you should be able to do it consistently if you just want banana coins, you can just stay on 1-3, before taking the barrel cannon to go up, do a roll & jump to the rightmost part of the first part of the level, where you'll find a puzzle piece, if you walk up to the rightenmost wall, you'll be able to respawn the 3 goomba like enemies at the start, that you can then combo to get up to 3 coins, then rinse and repeat until you get what you need, or grow bored ...I apologize for the madman ramblings, this game was genuinely my hyperfixation back in the day also! justice for my man squawks, made this game easier for 200%
I’ll echo people’s surprise that you like Returns but don’t like Tropical Freeze. Like, I respect your opinion, whatever the reason. And if I had to hazard a guess, given it’s a common criticism from what I can tell, you didn’t like it for the game’s difficulty? Which is totally fair- I didn’t like Donkey Kong Country Returns when I first played it on the Wii, but replaying it knowing what the game was like, I really enjoyed it. But Returns is a great game, and is very well respected, coming from a huge DK fan. Tropical Freeze is much more highly regarded, so even if my guess was off base, you’re definitely in the minority there. But like I said, you didn’t gel with the game, and that’s totally fair. I love it because it’s a very visually stunning game, the music is excellent, Dixie is a more fun Kong partner than Diddy, and the world themes and level design are a lot more fun, in my opinion. As for the ranking, I’ll have to play the re-release to confirm how I’d rank the worlds, but probably- 8. Cave (since I struggled with that world most first time through, and that stuck with me), 7. Volcano (Probably the least interesting world visually, but still fun), 6. Ruins (I liked the aesthetic, just didn’t do much memorable), 5 and 4. Jungle and Beach (I like both for, once again, the visuals, and they just have a nostalgic feeling for being the intro to the game. On any given day, I’ll give a different answer which goes where), 3. Forest (I really enjoy the forest world theme in the DKC games, and it had some fun levels, from what I remember), 2. Factory (As a side note, the factory is there because it was a world theme in the original Donkey Kong Country, run by the bad guys of that game, so it was brought back to use by the Tikis. And it had some real cool levels and was an interesting world for the theming behind it), 1. Cliff (I just really like the Cliff world. The levels are cool, the world feels pretty unique with the tar and living dinosaur fossils, and it’s just a real cool world.) Solid video, though. I appreciated the background for your avatar changing with the worlds, you have a nice narration, hearing the nostalgia stories just gives me a warm fuzzy feeling, and it’s nice to see someone talking about a game they love.
this is my introduction to you, this is the first video of u i have ever watched, i like tropical freeze but returns is a way better game but nonetheless, you have made an enemy today. Putting the Ruins & Forest stages at the bottom when they're the best and put the cave so high when it's the WORST; psh- preposterous. & i like Stu, he was challenging and scary when i was younger, HOWEVER- to insult Mangoruby is blasphemy of the highest degree. She is a beautiful, kind, docile berry amphiptere and my favorite boss and i will bot tolerate this slander.
I love DKCR so much! But like, Tropical Freeze is objectivity better, EVEN THE MUSIC, Irate Eight, Wing Ding, Sawmill Thrill, Homecoming Hijinx, Fruity Factory, Alpine Incline, Amiss Abyss, Seashore War, Frozen Frenzy, Scorch N Torch, Frantic Fields, Forest Folly and so many more, now half the boss themes either suck (Big Top Bop, Lord Fredrick's and the Monkeys whatever it's called) while the other half is really fucking good (Fugu Faceoff, Punch Bowl, Mountaintop Tussle) So I'll give DKCR that generally all of it's boss themes are consistently good.
3:02 - BASED BASED BASED BASED BASED BASED BASED BASED BASED. Okay, I don't completely hate Tropical Freeze, but it's so overrated IMO. Most always say how much better it is than Returns, so I'm happy to see I'm not the only one feeling the opposite about it.
Is a fine game but i don't think that is better than returns, in my case i liked Returns more because the slower plataforming and waiting fits more with DK physics. Meanwhile Tropical Freeze is a much more speed focused game, this meaning that it requires you to do some fast decisions but the slow turning and weight of the character doesn't make it for me. And about the visuals TF isn't really a noticeable step up from returns, which is a Wii game, people always seem to bring up and glaze the fact that the game levels give context for what ur doing but i couldn't care less if it just looks good, titles like Rayman Legends, the first Yoshi Island, Kirby's Dream Land 3 are better looking games in my opinion. %200 is tedious bc of Hard Mode, i don't dislike difficulty in video games at all, i specially enjoy Super Meat Boy, Celeste or Spelunky and %100 all of them but when you put 0 checkpoints in a 4 minute long stage it starts to feel cheap. Returns didn't have this problem cuz at least checkpoints WERE present and levels are shorter overall. I'm not saying it's a bad game by any means and honestly wanted to enjoy it more, but if someone thinks TF is the best 2D plataformer of all time, they have all the right to do so bc like you said in another comment, there is no true objectivity in gaming.
No kidding you're not in touch with fan opinions on the Donkey Kong games. Just casually throwing out a dis of Tropical Freeze like that, seemingly unaware that it's considered by many to be the best 2d platformer of all time. To each their own, of course, but I am very curious to hear why you don't like it.
Aside from the Factory being ranked high and the Golden Temple being last, I couldn’t disagree more with the order personally. Jungle by default was one of my least favorite worlds, but that’s mainly due to it doing its job as a first world. Still sets the tone well, and it being ranked lower for me stands to show how great the rest of the game is. It also helps that visuals and aesthetics of the jungle blend into the Ruins not long after, and the Forest serves as a successor to Jungle for taking concepts introduced in the Jungle levels and amplifying them further. Beach I never really cared for besides Stormy Shores and Tidal Terror, and Volcano very much underwhelmed me with what ended up being a mostly forgettable world with exception to Smokey Peaks and Roasted Rails. To me the biggest problem with both worlds is a lot of the levels struggle to stand out. Like with Cliffs and Caves I could easily describe most levels with no issues and notice how distinct they are from one another. Regardless this was a good watch, but it was interesting seeing such a drastic difference in opinion.
Oh and my ranking goes: 1. Forest 2. Cliffs 3. Factory (my top 3 change a decent amount between which is best) 4. Caves 5. Ruins 6. Volcano 7. Jungle 8. Beach 9. Golden Temple
As a guy who's only played DK Country Returns and Tropical Freeze, I can think of a few reasons why Returns is better. Obviously, I can't speak for Sahana, but I do have some personal opinions, (one big thing and several smaller things). I think the world maps of Returns are better. The little character icons tend to move faster than the animated characters ever could. I think the bosses are SIGNIFICANTLY worse in Tropical Freeze. In Returns, you're always moving, always able to speed the boss along if you know what you're doing. I personally think the music is better in Returns overall (personal opinion), though the overworld music of Returns is objectively better eith the fact that the music changes in every world. But the biggest slander I have for Tropical Freeze is it's 100% completion. In Tropical Freeze, they introduced secret exits, which grinds the pacing of the game down to a crawl. These secret exits often have two things in common: they require a specific Kong Buddy, and they're placed near the end of the level. That's not always the case, but it usually is. These levels are LONG and they can be DIFFICULT. It's never not frustrating for me to have to play through a second time, only to potentially have the wrong partner or, even worse, not even have a partner by the time I get there. Again, these levels are HARD, and it can be very difficult to hold onto your buddy if you don't have any buddy barrels. Not to mention the fact that the secret exits aren't even all that worth it. You skip one, maybe 2 levels at best, but that's it. I compare it to New super Mario Bros, where at least they had the guts to skip entire worlds and could be accessed by anyone.
i 100% agree! i also-and this is probably just me-prefer diddy over cranky and dixie. it’s probably nostalgia, but i just prefer the worlds and level designs in returns, even though tropical freeze is probably the better game
@sahana.speaks I personally like all 3 for different reasons. Diddy for nostalgia, Dixie for easier platforming and swimming, and Cranky Kong for banana coin farming. I also like Cranky for his bounce. It carries momentum, so if you roll jump and bounce, you'll fly across the level at top speed. I die within seconds of trying it most of the time, but it's still fun.
This is just nostalgia speaking. Dixie is way better than Diddy in every way. Not only does she do something similar to Diddy but also better, and it gives me more height. Also, preferring Returns over Tropical freeze is something I can understand in fact there are many things I prefer in Returns than Tropical Freeze. But I gotta disagree with the music. It is not even a matter of opinion. Tropical Freeze's music is far superior to Returns. It is composed by the same composer that composed the soundtrack for the original Donkey Kong country games. He is a musical genius. Returns music is literally music he already composed for the old games remixed, lol. Like, sorry if you're a person who genuinely believes that Returns has better music, then there is something wrong with you and your taste in music.
@arminarlert7273 Think about it this way. Yes, most of Returns soundtrack comes from older titles, I'm not gonna argue against that. But I have never PLAYED the original titles. I've heard the original soundtrack before, but my mind is showing me memories of Returns. And who's to say that, just because it's unoriginal, that it automatically means it isn't good?
@Sonic-o5w I never said it wasn't good I don't know why you have to resort to the straw man falacy you literally did the pancake and Waffle meme. I am just saying DCR's soundtrack is just objectively not better than Tropical Freeze. And this is coming from someone whose first Donkey Kong country game was indeed Returns. I only played tbe older titles recently. But yet again I am somewhat of a music nerd.

The levels are cool, the world feels pretty unique with the tar and living dinosaur fossils, and it’s just a real cool world.)
Solid video, though.
The factory makes more sense in the first DKC, where it’s actively built by the antagonists. Here it’s kinda just there because DKC1 had it
Ok, now you have to make a video explaining why you don't like tropical freeze, like that game smacks 🔥
Would really like to hear your thoughts on the original trilogy sometime!!
What you really need to do is rank the tiki bosses based on how good they sound
Yeah donkey Kong country returns is a masterpiece easily in my top 10 and you don’t like tropical freeze what!?
The puzzle pieces are cool though, they unlock concept art, which is really pretty in this game
I prefer Returns over Tropical Freeze as well. Thank you :)
For your favorite game, you hated a lot on some of the best level concepts
Not liking DKTF IS nuts
I want to know for the golden temple if you included the 3DS levels would it still be last or no?
Im curious, have you beaten tropical freeze?
@@chuckiketahaciendo Everything you just stated I completely agree with. I'm glad someone agrees with my "no true objectivity" statement too.
0:21 I already like you now.
Epic
I love this game so much, but tropical freeze is better. I dont get why they dont like it
I also love this game irrationally to much but I own the wii and ds version and have no need for another overpriced copy, incredible game though
You can't just say these hot takes like how Tropical Freeze is mid without context. 😂💀
Why are you beefing with Squawks, HE’S JUST A LITTLE GUY !!
I respect ur opinion, but The Jungle has 2 levels that are pretty mediocre and even bad
Great video, but I have to disagree. Tropical Freeze is way more better and creative
Banana
No kidding you're not in touch with fan opinions on the Donkey Kong games. Just casually throwing out a dis of Tropical Freeze like that, seemingly unaware that it's considered by many to be the best 2d platformer of all time. To each their own, of course, but I am very curious to hear why you don't like it.
Thugly is way cooler than mugly
Oh and my ranking goes:
1. Forest
2. Cliffs
3. Factory (my top 3 change a decent amount between which is best)
4. Caves
5. Ruins
6. Volcano
7. Jungle
8. Beach
9. Golden Temple
I didnt like tropical freeze either. Game fucking sucks.
