He appeared relatively convincing, so much, that Laura K hardly seemed to know what to do...smile, chuckle. nod?

Rory Bremner was the one who broke the door down on that. Didn't matter then because the politicians were grown ups, balanced and confident. What we have now is the result of years of constant control of the thoughts and beliefs of candidates. The Cons are no longer a broad church political party. They are narroe, frightened, and confused. This is when they are at their most dangerous.
It's happened as far back as I can remember. Was spitting image woke?

Joe was pointing out two things- 1. how Truss told us nothing about solving our country's problem (except she'll think about it at some point in in the future), 2. that newspapers have this tendency make up things for the headlines- oh the irony.

Truss deserves to be made fun of as is every politician or anyone who presents themselves in the public domain.It's called satire/comedy. It's called freedom of speech which this Government is so proud of but only if it suits its ideologies. Well done Joe Lycett, smiles all round.
Well O'Brien is in the "public domain". However, *he* has the advantage of a 30 second delay and a hand on the mute button.
I suspect those two options have been employed in the past to spare him some embarrassment or to avoid a pertinent point from a "guest" that doesn't quite suit Jimbo's political agenda.
No-one deserves to be made fun of..People are going to do it, but that dos not make it right. There is political debate and disagreement and there is lack of respect. We should be a country where everyone respects everyone else. That is what hopefully we teach our children and that should be the example we set.

Daily Heil is unfortunately more mainstream than we would like.
There are those who keep complaining that the DM is too woke. Just read the BTL comments on the Mail on Line. I'm not convinced that these are just from Russian bots.

Whether that is in society, politics, civil rights, office politics, the farming industry, whatever. It comes from the US and mostly black communities, used to describe becoming aware of how the system there has measuers in place that are aimed to impact black communities more negatively then white communities, this can be from zoning laws to voter rights.

Being 'woke' in 2022 is not being a 90's liberal for gods sake, which is what you've just described.
There is a whole body of academia now relating to race and gender issues and how to deal with them, some of these ideas have a lot of merit...others are far more controversial. However its possible to discuss all of them calmly and rationally.
It's changed a lot since the roots of wokeness which you mention, and awareness is no longer ever nearly enough. Have a look at most corporate policies towards diversity and inclusion.

The Daily Fail, in common with most of gammonhood, is in a permanent state of fury. If they even quote somebody who's to the left of Goering the words fury or furious will be in the headline - "Fishmongers' and bakers' fury at Jesus undermining their market".

Thank you, James, for highlighting the hypocrisy over what woke is all about. The definition is to be awake (or aware) to the realities of life. The Fail is so hypocritical in its coverage, they’ll argue blue is red one day and the opposite the next. I feel sorry for its readers. I may be recycling something James said, but I heard a lovely rebuttal of the fear-filled anti ‘woke’ rhetoric. The suggestion was to substitute ‘woke’ with the synonym “respect”. “It’s respect gone mad.” “Respect is ruining our culture!” “Oh, you’re just respectful.”
That’s not to say that there aren’t issues with liberal oversensitivity about … well too much really, but for me anyway it’s a reminder that wokeness is not the vile thing it’s represented to be.

Joe Lycett made comments that most people in this country share. The majority of people in this country did not want this government and yet have had to tolerate it for over a decade. The only thing the BBC did was broadcast a guest on a show representing that view. It also regularly broadcasts the views of the minority who support the Tories. What possible reason is there to be furious?
Are we to assume that anybody who holds a view that opposes that of the government should no longer be given the right to express that opinion in public? Is that where the Tories are heading?
With the tradition of British humour, anyone in the public eye has always been and will always be a target for comedy, satire etc. Deal with it - ! 😁
The daily mail have been campaigning for Truss from the word go, and rubbishing sunak, so it's not surprising they were upset with any comment that was even mildly critical.
Joe Lycett is brilliant, very articulate and switched on and very funny. I really can't imagine why on earth they invited him on to be honest. He was always going to criticise Truss in an hilarious way. Job done.

I think you have got it wrong James, it's not woke (daily beano) we call this being 'childish'! These people have been schooled too long and are still in the playground.

What got me the most was how those two opinions were presented and I think Joe just highlighted how absurd it was. One was a piece on all the problems a new PM faces in the times, then an opinion in the telegraph saying, yeah but it could all be great. Presenting them as equally valid opinions is intellectually dishonest and a disservice to the public.

That's what the media including the BBC has been doing for years. Present a top expert on a given subject and, "for balance", a complete charlatan with an opposite view.
