I’ve always been frustrated trying to estimate how many stitches for the length I need. I can see this technique being incredibly helpful. Thank you so very much!
As a "long-time crocheter," this gives me a BUNCH of ideas of ways you could do a knitting cast-on using other crochet stitches as well! :D I may have to go do some experimenting. ;) ;) I will definitely be using this in the future. :) GREAT video as always! :D
I'm so glad this is a thing! I hate casting on straight to the needles, so I started transferring stitches from my Tunisian crochet hook to start. It helps so much. :D
Omg thank you so much. I crochet but have been trying to learn to knit. The casting on was so hard for me i gave up but with this method i can try again. Thank you. ❤
you definitely should look into tunesian crochet then. It will give you all the right kind of ideas for knitting (and psst...my next video on my main youtube channel will be all about crochet techniques for knitters!)
I’m a fairly new knitter and a long time crocheter. I found it easier, especially when working through the back bump, to use a tunisian crochet hook and complete the entire cast on without having the struggle of forcing the needle through that somewhat difficult back bump. Hope this helps
@@nimbleneedlestwo I apologize, I should have specified that my comment was aimed at those who have experience in crocheting as well as knitting. I have found that a tunisian hook can be used as an alternative to a knitting needle in various knitting cast ons/bind offs for those who feel more comfortable working with a hook.
Wow! This is one great video...only problem I have is controlling the tension on my yarn...my cast on stitches aren't consistent. I'm a Portuguese knitter...I need to practice this more...but I love the look! Thanks so much!'
you can also bind-off with a crochet hook if that's what you mean? but other than that, there are no real matching cast-ons and bind-offs. your best bet would be starting with a provisional cast-on and then doing the same bind off on both sides.
yes it absolutely can be used in the round - with one little caveat. You will have to graft one stitch to bridge the gap with the tail later on. Otherwise, you will end up with a bigish gap.
Hi Norman. Would I be able to use this method of casting on in the middle of a row? As I’d like to match the neckline edge (top of the sleeve section actually) of a jumper that had standard cast off stitches on the other side? I hope I’ve described that well enough 😅
So, I would lean towards same or bigger. If you look closely at the repeat, that you will notice that the immediate edge stitch is definied by the barrel of your crochet hook (the others are devined by the knititng needle). So, if you were to use a very teeny tiny hook that edge would end up very tight.
hm...well...i would say it does matter but it will depend a bit on how tight or loose your crochet. But normally, the size of your needles definies the size of those loops, not your crochet hook.
not really, as you cast-on around the needle and this will define your gauge. However, if the crochet hook is too big or too small you will have a hard time grabbing the yarn. So i'd say it should be roughly around the size you are planning to knit with
@@nimbleneedlestwo You know how we use a tape to get the measurements of someone’s hip or waist in crochet? My question is; can I use the same method and still pick up the loops to knit? I dunno if that made sense😑
@@sonneebah well, knitted fabric behaves vastly different than crochet fabric. So, I would be very careful to adapt any method found in crochet..just because the cast-on is done with a hook, doesn't mean the rest of the fabric will behave like crochet as well. in knitting (but actually I would say also in crochet), planing a design always starts with a swatch.
As a long time crocheter who doesn't like casting on, this will become my go-to method! Thanks from Canada!
You are so welcome! it's certainly a very lovely option!

Norman, you are very quickly becoming my favorite teacher for new techniques! You explain everything so well. 😁 Danke schön!

definitely, Gwendy. there are so many different ways to cast-on with a crochet hook on top of that.
What a pretty cast on! Thank you, Norman! It's always a delight to see you on Sunday.
heh. Yeah, I try to stick to that schedule as I felt that's when people have most time to really enjoy their knits and purls :)

Hi Norman. Thanks for another great tutorial! Thanks for the tips on the slip knits as well. There are so many different ways to make them!🤗
Thank you for the clear demonstration of a very neat cast-on method!
Thank you! You made it easy and fun😊
Best method I’ve ever seen for crochet cast on. Thank you
Just found out about this cast on technique today. Thank you, Norman. ❤
I’m a long time knitter and a long time user of the long tail cast on. I’m really liking this crochet cast on, hopefully it works left handed.
Love that you reviewed both methods! Thank you ❤
very comprehensive and easy to follow and also very quick! i don't know how you manage it
I love the look of this cast on, plus I am terrible at estimating the proper length of tail in a long tail cast on!
This has a lovely look to it, Thank you.
yeah, if you combine it with a normal bind-off, then you will get mirrored edges!
This is so helpful!!! Thank you!!!!
Love you Norman!,,,,,❤
Just what I needed. Vielen Dank!
Very helpful 😊
Norman wonderful tutorial 👍🏻🤟🏻🧶🙋🏻♀️💕🏔As others mentioned, I will be using it in a variety of projects!!!!

yeah tunesian crochet hooks are quite useful. Many knitters don't own one tho - or even know they exist.

Hi, Norman, do you use a crochet hook same size as your knitting needle? I love your tutorials 😊👍🏻
yeah (sorry for replying so late)
Good video, thank you ! But what hook size vs needle size do you recommend ?
thats very difficult for me to say because it kinda depends on your crochet tension. Typically I would say...same or half a size higher.
Would this stop the curling up of stocking stitch at the beginning of the project?
no. I don't see how it would. But maybe read this article on my blog: nimble-needles.com/tutorials/how-to-keep-knitting-from-curling/

you can use the backwardloops cast on or the knitted cast on for mid project cast-ons.
Hi Norman! Does it matter what size crochet hook I use? Should it be the equivalent to the knitting needle?
yes, I would pick one that is in that range. It will depend a bit on how tight or loose your crochet, tho.
A question on this method, if I may. What size hook do you use? Is it the same as the needle size, or larger or smaller? Thanks if you do reply.
I'd go for same size or slightly bigger yeah.
Do you use the same needle AND hook size? If I'm using a 5mm knitting needles do I use same 5mm crochet hook?
So, I would lean towards same or bigger. If you look closely at the repeat, that you will notice that the immediate edge stitch is definied by the barrel of your crochet hook (the others are devined by the knititng needle). I’m just so confused what cast on to use when. Someone recommended this cast on for a scarf so I guess I’ll try it?
there are no hard rules. use whatever you feel looks pretty and is stretchy enough :)
Is the crochet hook size important here? Or can it be any size?
hm...well...i would say it does matter but it will depend a bit on how tight or loose your crochet. But normally, the size of your needles definies the size of those loops, not your crochet hook.
