I think the Highway Code makes it clear about these hatched areas. If the hatching has long broken lines at either side you can cross them as long as you use caution. Just the same as if it were a single long broken line. However, if the hatched area has solid lines around it you must not enter or cross it as this is the same as crossing a double white line in the road. All the hatch is for is to make the lane dividing lines wider giving greater lane separation, it’s the solid or broken line around them that defines if you can enter or cross them.

"Enter broken hatched markings only if safe and necessary", why does everyone seem to miss that phrase. Do you think it was safe for any vehicle, let alone a large bus, to do that manoeuvre when there could be oncoming traffic and people coming out of the side roads as he said? 🤔😡

@@dhcgvvchnchb1161 I think you both make a good point on this, the phrase "Enter broken hatched markings only if safe and necessary", is open for interpretation. I think we can all agree though that the bus took liberties with that one. 🙂

I have regularly overtaken tractors in the cross hatchings on a stretch of road near Evesham, 3 miles of wide straight road, but wouldn't dream of using the area to overtake a car or lorry. Use the area when necessary and only when it's safe to do so is what I was taught many years ago.

4:40 I let cars through temporary lights first when i'm cycling, but only if it's only a few, I've done that countless times. It's just nicer than having a couple of cars tailing you through the coned area, then trying to pass. If the lights change with no other traffic approaching, you get a clear road with no dodgy overtakes for quite a while. It's also considerate towards drivers, which I will be when it's safe and reasonable.

    * Highway Code Rule 130Areas of white diagonal stripes or chevrons painted on the road. These are to separate traffic lanes or to protect traffic turning right. If the area is bordered by a broken white line, you should not enter the area unless it is necessary and you can see that it is safe to do so.
So, we're the bus actions necessary? Nope. We're they safe? Nope

08:02 - this is an increasing problem in my experience-cars parked way too close to junctions. Highway code says no parking opposite or within 10 metres of a junction. The other annoyance in this clip is all the cars parked on what is a narrow road, when every property has a driveway.

    • @stephenwalker6823

The rules say that motor vehicles should stop at the ASL "if it is safe to do so". If the lights change when the vehicle is close to the line or another vehicle is close behind, then vehicles should stop in the box, rather than increasing danger by braking harshly.

Hatched markings bordered by broken(dashed) white lines can be driven on if you need to. However hatched markings bordered by solid white lines - you aren't allowed to drive on or across them unless it's an emergency situation (not that it stops some people, of course, and you know who you are!)

The audi at 12:31 - i dare say another one of those who can't comprehend either a) why someone might be going to somewhere different from them or b) why there is other traffic on the road! It's always real idiots who glare at people for preventing them driving improperly. Many years ago a house my family and I lived at was just to the right of a corner at a junction where people would (and still do) routinely cut the corner because not many people turn right out of that junction, and my dad used to get a lot of glares from people simply for waiting to turn right (and thus preventing them cutting the corner as a result)

I'm thinking I should set up cameras at the junction by my office. I cross it on foot twice a day. In the two years I've worked there, there have been 3 days when not a single cyclist has gone through a red light. Though for evenness, it's fair to point out that about once a month, a car driver turns into the broad cycle lane, thinking it's for them.

If it's the classic hatched lines that lead up to a separate area for turning right from it's fine to drive on the markings (as long as they have broken not solid edges) to join the traffic tuning right and avoid obstructing traffic behind you. They are there to protect right turning traffic and you offer more actual protection than a little paint on the road. Where they are like the ones that bus run over that are there to separate two lanes running in opposite directions then it's only OK to use them if you absolutely have to because your vehicle is too wide or you need to cross them to go into a driveway or similar. They are obviously not there to provide an extra lane for 'special' people.

At 9:14 you're having your little rant about how cyclists who have the advantage of the "box" as you called it or the proper term, ASL and why they dont use it and just cycle through the red light like the one you showed, which I agree was wrong. However, you didnt mention the fact that the car in front of you was breaking the Highway code as they had gone over their line and were sat in the ASL box, something I see all too frequently. On the occasions when I used to ride to work at my old job I would actually make a point to "break the law" and put my bike in front of them to proof a point because of their inconsiderate nature.

    • @stephenwalker6823
      @stephenwalker6823 10 місяців тому

If the car was close to the lights when they changed, then they should only stop at the ASL "if it is safe to do so". If it means braking hard and risking a skid, they "should" stop past the ASL, but before the stop-line proper.

And after they went I started to cross and out of nowhere an orange Peugeot Suv (I don't know the model name) turned into the road and almost hit me, they didn't even indicate I started crossing due to thinking they was going straight on, then obviously they turned into the road.
Dangerous drivers need to have either re-test on their driving skills. So if they fail, they will have to retake all lessons (that they need) to become a safe driver.

there are not many cyclists who ride recklessly. with little protection, you are very vulnerable on a bicycle, so there's a massive incentive to not do anything stupid. I don't make a habit of riding through red lights, but sometimes, it just makes sense. A couple of days ago I had a situation where a bus pulled alongside me and moved into the ASL box. I didn't want to be setting off at the same time as the bus, so anticipated the lights changing and rolled through the red light as the intersection was completely clear. The bus set off a few seconds after when the lights changed, but I'd already got across and made my right turn by then. Far safer than trying to turn right across traffic when it's accelerating ahead.

Bikes are always breaking the law/s of the highway code! They don't have to sit a driving test! We need more cameras at traffic lights to catch those clowns! Learner drivers get taught in how to drive/reverse, but not in how to read what is round the corner, keep your distance from the car in front etc! They are let loose to create havoc to themselves and other road users! More tuition and guidance should be available to new drivers! Dash cams help us drivers a lot when incidents occur, yet we are all paying OTT insurance premiums which is a bit confusion seeing that we capture evidence on our dash cam?

3:32 I know it's technically illegal, but both those red light infractions were done safely. There's far worse behaviour on the roads. Red lights wouldn't exist if it wasn't for motorised traffic, I've yet to see traffic lights installed at an intersection of cycle lanes or to control pedestrians crossing a cycle track (that's not part of a road crossing).

The first traffic light was installed in 1868 - long before motorised vehicles were on the road.

Just drive your own car as safely and considerately as you can. There is absolutely no point getting hot under the collar about things you can do nothing about.
