This is exactly what I hear with all of these Tone City comparisons. The Tone City pedals are just a hair behind their pricey challengers. I can see having a cadre of Tone City pedals at a third the price. But yet I continue to spend the extra ching on the real pedals.
I agree on the plexi I bought one. But once I save I'm going with the OCD just because of the full range it has. But I usually buy used when I go super expensive. Usually saves a few bucks that end up being used on shipping because the nearest shop that has pedals is over 120 miles away and doesn't have a large selection at that.
The Dry Martini sounds a lot more unfocused and blown out when pushed hard - almost like a fuzz pedal. The OCD maintains much more clarity and definition - a lot tighter at high gain. The tone knob is also more usable and versatile through its full range on the OCD. When turned completely down, the Martini gets hella muddy, whereas the OCD takes on a darker Marshall or rolled-back AC30 vibe that's still very usable.
let's remember the feel and response of being the player and standing in front of the speakers actually pushing air at you is vastly different than viewing this all through a screen, in regards to the actual differences of these (or any) pedals
OCD more versatile: sounds good almost everywhere, the tone pot does a lot more, better clean boost, another very nice structure on low peak. Tone city sounded nice with pots at 12ish, but not so much otherwise.
Damn! The OCD sounds INMENSE! The Dry Martini sounds really good too, at that price, you really can't go wrong. But, that OCD, damn, with the gain at 75% in the HP mode, it really fattens everything really nicely, and it remains clear enough to be a nice distorted sound. The Dry Martini just couldn't keep up at that stage.
The EHX Glove is an OCD clone for about $70 US and is switchable 9v/18v and made in Merica! I think the EHX sounds a smidge smoother in the clipping than the OCD but hey. Lets just say I don't own the OCD anymore. Being an OCD I was able to get most of my money back selling it used. Tone City sounds good. I wish we had them more available here in the states as they seem to be a step up in quality from joyo. Amazon has them hit or miss and can't find them on eBay new. For State side folks, the joyo ultimate OD is an OCD clone for $30. I'd suggest spending the extra and get an EHX Glove.
Admittedly the Tone City does sound close (as far as I can tell via UA-cam), but in Canada most Tone City pedals go for about $100. For what they are $100 seems a bit too much to me, especially considering the OCD only costs $150 here. To me it makes more sense to spend a little more and get the genuine article rather than save $50 on an imitation. I realize that $50 is half way to getting a second Tone City pedal, but I'd rather have one OCD than one and a half Tone City pedals.
Yeah, the pricing on Tone City in Canada just doesn't make sense, they've missed their target window I think. I bought a couple last year but they were still going for $70 then.
THE BIG ONES LIKE THE MODEL B I HAVE ARE $100 FROM RIFFCITYGUITARS, WHICH HAS THE BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE I'VE EXPERIENCED SO FAR WITH THE HAND WRITTEN NOTES AND FREE 2 DAY SHIPPING THAT ACTUALLY TAKES 2 DAYS, NOT LIKE GUITAR CENTER WHERE 2 DAY SHIPPING TAKES 5 AT LEAST, BUT BEST OF ALL ABOUT THEM IS THE SUPER DELICIOUS COOKIE THEY SEND YOU! IT SUCKS THOUGH BECAUSE ALL THE BRANDS I LIKE THE MOST AREN'T STOCKED BY RIFFCITY OR I WOULD BUY EVERYTHING FROM THEM
Yeah, at least from the one site I found that seems legit. When you consider the conversion, 50 Pounds is a little over $80 CAD. Even the $60 USD +Dominic Blizz quoted is still about 80 Canadian Pesos.
I love how you always say "pluck them in" in these videos. The best! On a more serious note, I'm all about the bang for buck on the tone city with this one, especially live.
Pete your playing is absolutely superb. Love watching your videos. That purple CS Tele must be one of the nicest teles I have ever heard. Thanks for these videos
Usually I would say something like "Tone City gets real close, but _____ is just a little more alive". But this one I gotta say I kept going back and forth. Sometimes I preferred the Tone City and sometimes I preferred the OCD. I own an OCD too so I'm very familiar with what it can do.
Overall you would go for the Tone City although my one reservation is that I thought it sounded a bit jangly at lower gain settings. Love the bridge pick-up on that tele. Great series of videos, keep them coming.
The only difference that seemed significant was that the tone pot was much more useful on the OCD. It also seemed to have a bit more mid push. As has been the norm on these videos, the Tone City pedal did quite well as the value priced option. One would assume that they, ahem, closely studied the circuits of a lot of famous pedals when they were designing their own.
I am a Huge Fulltone Guy. I Love my OCD and would never part with it ( however ) - this is Alot Closer then I thought it would be. The difference is negligible. I am a very surprised. ( I still prefer the Build Quality, & internal components of the OCD ). - Please do the Mooer E-Lady Flanger vs. EHX Electric Mistress. Nice comparison. It gives people on a budget more options.
really close, the Ocd has a little more room for tone and beefyness but that tone city sounds really nice. I've been looking for a ocd replica....this is it.
The type of amp used really has a huge impact. I was trying out the OCD through my Hughes & Kettner tubemeister head and really didn't like it at all. Couldn't get a clear, crisp tone that Pete manages to get here. Both sound great imo, would probably just look to save a bit of $$ and go with the tone city.
The Dry Martini sounded pretty good, but I think I prefer the OCD on this one. Then again, I'm probably biased because I own an OCD and it's by far my favorite pedal on my board. That all being said, the Dry Martini still holds up pretty well in comparison.
1. This is the best comparison video I've seen for a long time! Very good job Pete! 2. I consider the OCD as the holy grail when it comes to rich overdrive pedals. But I have to admit that there are tons of really good sounding clones out there. And if you are on a budget there is many pedals to go with. Ofc the Tone City Dry Martiny is one them.
Unlike the Kalamazoo video, this is more what I'm used to seeing with these A/B videos - they were largely indistinguishable. And given the price difference, the closer they are, the more it represents a win for the cheaper, smaller Tone City pedal. It should be pointed out all these videos start with the assumption that setting the knobs on the clone exactly the same as the original should result in the same tone. In practice, given the slight variations in components used and circuit layout, this is often not the case. And if both pedals offer have a "sweet spot" but you need to be at 11:00 on the tone knob for one but 1:00 on the other, does that really matter? Thanks for the comparison - enjoying the videos!
Pete did a great job of demoing these pedals. Both pedals sounded great! I think Pete could make piano wire strung across a 2x4 sound good. The OCD sounded a bit muddy at higher gain levels. I wonder if it could have used a bit more DC voltage.
I've used an OCD for years, but it just recently quit on me. Currently I'm using the Tone City Bad Horse instead, but I'm glad to know that I can replace the OCD for a fraction of the original cost with the Tone City equivalent. Thanks Pete!
I loved both, the TC really held its own, the only time I could say I liked the OCD more is when the drive was in the high or low position, when the drive was in the middle for some parts I liked the TC more and vice versa
Very close but the OCD is smoother on all settings and i bet more versatile with different amps in my experience you get what you pay for all depends on your budget i guess cool sounds though
I feel that I like the dry martini more for bluesy riffs and ocd for more rocky riffs. I do like the more compressed sound of the tone city more overall.
One small complaint, he is running the OCD off of a battery and the Tone City off of main becuase it can't take a battery. It doesn't make a huge difference but a small difference.
Unity gain would make this a better demo...that said, I have TWO TC Dry Martini's on my board because they are THAT good...one low gain, one higher gain...Mesa 5:25 Express + for full gain.
I have a couple of the tone city pedals, they sound great but I do notice that the gain control doesn't have a very good range. They go from low to high gain at around 9 or 10 o' clock and past there the increase is only small.
Hey Pete -- the video that persuaded me to get a TC Dry Martini which is fab even though I don't often use such high gain. Great work. Please, how do you set the HRD to get your "clean" tone? I'd love to get that tone from my HRDv 410 but don't think I've ever been able to turn up the volume enough!
I'm listening to a lot of the these Tone City VS video's. I haven't listened to them all but this is the closest to the competition I've heard so far. I think the OCD wins by a hair but it ain't much.
What about comparing it to the Mooer Hustle Drive too,? I'd like to know which is the better sounding cheapo, as far as I can tell Hustle Drive sounds a bit more digital but still tonally closer to OCD than the Tone City one.
I've just watched three differeng David vs. Goliath with ToneCity drive/boost/overdrive pedals and while the competition has some cool features and sounds, overall I liked the ToneCity sounds best. Which is moot, because I don't use any drive pedals (if you ignore the optional boost on my Morley Bad Horsey II)...
Can you folks do the new EH Big Muff with op amp vs the new Russian Muff? What about a Treble Booster Shootout between Caitlainbreed, Throwbak, British pedal clones, the German BSM ect...???
this duplicates a back to back I did some time ago in Anderton's. My conclusions are the same from this video. The OCD was marginally better sounding but not £80s better. I bought the DM. also got a wildfire against a suhr to. Couldn't justify the difference.
When I listen to the tone pot comparison starting from 4:20 ...the Martini sucks ...OCD is much smoother and not that harsh ...more useful. For my taste the OCD is clear the winner. But if you search for a similar sound character for less mo0ney then go for it.
Duncan Earley It's like a BOSS DS-1 and a tubescreamer had a baby called the OCD. It's more distortion-like than the tubescreamer but keeps the tone without being lost in the fuzz that can happen with the DS-1
Dollars to Donuts, I'd say the Dry Martini held its ground on this one. I have a number of Tone City pedals and they are all good (and tough). Thanks!
Hi wich Tone City overdrive have you bought?
I like donuts 👍
They are very close. I think the OCD is just a bit richer sounding, but it's very close.
This is exactly what I hear with all of these Tone City comparisons. The Tone City pedals are just a hair behind their pricey challengers. I can see having a cadre of Tone City pedals at a third the price. But yet I continue to spend the extra ching on the real pedals.

I own an OCD and I love it...but that Dry Martini definitely has some mojo of its own
A little touch of white paint or tip-ex into the controlls of Tone city pedals is my Tip Of The Day!! ;)
they are extremely close at low gain but oh my the OCD at higher gain rips :D
The Dry Martini sounds a lot more unfocused and blown out when pushed hard - almost like a fuzz pedal. The OCD maintains much more clarity and definition - a lot tighter at high gain. Darrien Day I agree.
Darrien Day
dangit darrien
your on each and every video i watch
dadddgummit boyy!!!
get them fangers a werkin sunny boi.
Oh you can't imagine how much these fangaz are a werkin. come to my next show, you'll be smitten, friend
OCD more versatile: sounds good almost everywhere, the tone pot does a lot more, better clean boost, another very nice structure on low peak. Tone city sounded nice with pots at 12ish, but not so much otherwise.

For State side folks, the joyo ultimate OD is an OCD clone for $30. I'd suggest spending the extra and get an EHX Glove.
In the US, Riffcity guitar carries Tone City.
The Dry Martini sounds very natural and has great tones! I own the OCD myself and I personally love how thick the drive sound is!
OCD is certainly worth the extra money. More gain on hand and more organic-sounding compression at high-gain.
Agreed, the Tone City sounds much more unfocused, blown-out and 'fuzzy' at high gain!
After a while I just started mainly listening to Pete's juicy playing :P
Admittedly the Tone City does sound close (as far as I can tell via UA-cam), but in Canada most Tone City pedals go for about $100. +sensenstein you pay $100 for Tone City pedals in Canada?? Wow - they're about $50 in the UK!
sensenstein Yeah, 60$ here in the states.
Wow, so close! there is usually a clear difference in the D v G videos, but here if anything I'd be more tempted by the tone city pedal. great stuff.
I love how you always say "pluck them in" in these videos. The best! On a more serious note, I'm all about the bang for buck on the tone city with this one, especially live.
I did little test in a local store and I ended up picking the OCD. They’re something about it that I just love a little more then the Dry Martini.

( I still prefer the Build Quality, & internal components of the OCD ). - Please do the Mooer E-Lady Flanger vs. EHX Electric Mistress. Nice comparison. It gives people on a budget more options.
The OCD seems to have a wider variation of tones but, for the price, you can't go wrong with the Tone City
OCD can be ran @ 18v which makes it sound a lot better IMO. I owned one for a while but eventually sold it when I switched to playing through a Vox
really close, the Ocd has a little more room for tone and beefyness but that tone city sounds really nice. I've been looking for a ocd replica....this is it.
I think that the main difference is on quality of components. Durability, power supply, noise....
Because they are both good, really, by sonority
The type of amp used really has a huge impact. I was trying out the OCD through my Hughes & Kettner tubemeister head and really didn't like it at all. Couldn't get a clear, crisp tone that Pete manages to get here. Both sound great imo, would probably just look to save a bit of $$ and go with the tone city.

I think it should be called Pete vs Goliath
Unlike the Kalamazoo video, this is more what I'm used to seeing with these A/B videos - they were largely indistinguishable. And given the price difference, the closer they are, the more it represents a win for the cheaper, smaller Tone City pedal.

Thanks for the comparison - enjoying the videos!
there's a little something about that dry martini i liked more. go figure
Great demo, great playing... got a bunch of Tone City mini pedals coming in, just gotta try them out! 👍👍👍
Pete did a great job of demoing these pedals.
Both pedals sounded great! I think Pete could make piano wire strung across a 2x4 sound good.
The OCD sounded a bit muddy at higher gain levels. I wonder if it could have used a bit more DC voltage.
I have both and use both simultaneously!
Sounds very nice for the price!
I love OCDs, i have a Mooer Hustle Drive (OCD copy) and LOVE it...
Cool videos! I'd like to see how the Caline CP-14 English Man does sometime. One of my fave budget pedals of all time!
I've used an OCD for years, but it just recently quit on me. Currently I'm using the Tone City Bad Horse instead, but I'm glad to know that I can replace the OCD for a fraction of the original cost with the Tone City equivalent. Thanks Pete!
Send it back to Fulltone, they will repair your OCD.
Both are cool but OCD just has more depth and richness IMO
Right off the bat OCD has more Girth going on, but I say tweak up the gain on the TC and see if that matches it.
They are practically identical
The OCD is a bit louder in its settings Giving the illusion of being slightly fuller
WayHuge Blue Hippo vs Tone City Angel Wing!
Wow, they are both very close, but the OCD seems to have a more natural tube compression sound.
I loved both, the TC really held its own, the only time I could say I liked the OCD more is when the drive was in the high or low position, when the drive was in the middle for some parts I liked the TC more and vice versa
Tone city vs. Goliath
Very close but the OCD is smoother on all settings and i bet more versatile with different amps in my experience you get what you pay for all depends on your budget i guess cool sounds though
I think the only BIG difference is that you can run the OCD with 18v for more grit. I love my OCD. Mine has been on my board forever
I really like how the Dry Martini affects the tone with character. The OCD just adds dribe, but still sounds dry in comparison
I feel that I like the dry martini more for bluesy riffs and ocd for more rocky riffs. I do like the more compressed sound of the tone city more overall.
today is the day of uploads
Dry Martini sounds good. Seems versatile.
Do a David vs. Goliath for amps. Similar wattage, speaker size etc, but affordable vs expensive.
EQD Cloven Hoof vs Thorpy FX Fallout Cloud.
One small complaint, he is running the OCD off of a battery and the Tone City off of main becuase it can't take a battery. It doesn't make a huge difference but a small difference.
i have the ocd and im really happy with it, shame this vid wasn't up earlier XD
I like ToneCity, but andertons does seem to advertise them quite a bit. Love the videos though!
Stone Valley they could have a partnership or a set amount of them in Stock that they need to sell. I don't know. Does it bother you?
+Stone Valley we just think they're the best budget pedals out there!
This was a great comparison, would love to see more like this That said I can see why the OCD is so much more expensive. You get what you pay for.
Normally I would agree with you. But I think my EHX od glove is better than the OCD and I only paid $60 for the glove.

I'd love to get that tone from my HRDv 410 but don't think I've ever been able to turn up the volume enough!
It's clear that the guys at ToneCity decided to copy the OCD. And what a great job they did!
I'm listening to a lot of the these Tone City VS video's. I haven't listened to them all but this is the closest to the competition I've heard so far. I think the OCD wins by a hair but it ain't much.
Tone city for me. I like the warmer sound.
both are good .. one is more affordable .
wouldn't mind seeing some Strymon and Eventide gear
Good comparison. I use my OCD purely for boost on solos and stuff. I think its a great drive, but the tone city sounds just as good..and it's cheap.
The only thing i noticed was bass loss on the Martini, other than that close.
OCD is much more gig reliable AND it accepts 9V batt. Joyo UD is a killer soundn cheap alternative but not as reliable either.
OCD has more clarity, less hash compared to the Dry Martini, but a huge difference in price!
Can you folks do the new EH Big Muff with op amp vs the new Russian Muff? What about a Treble Booster Shootout between Caitlainbreed, Throwbak, British pedal clones, the German BSM ect...???
I’m a tone city fan but the OCD driven hard is definitely more ballsy
It ain't what you got I s the way that you use it😎
In the mid gain range the dry martini seems more neutral and twangy to me. The OCD seems too identifiable, too pedally.
once again time city nails it
Sharkbate211 I prefer Tone City, but it's whatever you like 😉
drdoom8793 imma not edit my post so u can have ur great joke haha
Sharkbate211 Time City?
Both sounds great, but, which one actually cuts better in a band?
I swap my Mandragora in and out with my Dry Martini. In my rig the DM sounds like an old '70s cranked Orange amp. Fat and woolly.
The OCD seems to come with added cream. Hehe.
Nice! Sound about the same to me (through cheap earbuds).
this duplicates a back to back I did some time ago in Anderton's. My conclusions are the same from this video. The OCD was marginally better sounding but not £80s better. I bought the DM. also got a wildfire against a suhr to. Couldn't justify the difference.
OCD! Fantastic!!!
TC sounded more dry, but OCD was WAY louder.
When I listen to the tone pot comparison starting from 4:20 ...the Martini sucks ...OCD is much smoother and not that harsh ...more useful. For my taste the OCD is clear the winner. But if you search for a similar sound character for less mo0ney then go for it.
That purple Tele looks sik af! It NEEDS a better psychedelic looking pickguard tho
OK but reliability becomes an issue. OCD uses discreet components also overall sounds fuller.
What's an OCD more similar to? A tube screamer a boss blues driver or a boss SD-1? Or even a Boss DS-1 sort off?
Duncan Earley It's like a BOSS DS-1 and a tubescreamer had a baby called the OCD. It's more distortion-like than the tubescreamer but keeps the tone without being lost in the fuzz that can happen with the DS-1
It doesn't quite perform as well in the low end when the gain is rolled back. That's the biggest difference I can see.
Tone city one is just a little less full and a tad fizzy
The Dry Martini sounds a little dirtier and noisier than the OCD, but it is pretty close otherwise.
I thought it sounded sharper and clearer.
you should do one with a mooer
ISN'T THE DRY MARTINI SUPOSE TO SOUND LIKE A MARSHALL STACK? I THINK THATS HOW THEY DESCRIBED IT ON THEIR WEBSITE
Tone City Dry Martini is Goliath?!
OCD for me really. Like them both but the OCD just has a bit more of what I want.
The OCD shines at 18v. Almost returned mine until I found out about that.
Paulitik be cool if there was a comparison of the OCD with 9v vs 18v...
I prefer the ocd on 9v...
Me too 9v
Found it hard to tell the difference
The Martini has some overpowering , unnatural bass frequencies happening if you listen closely. Other than that it’s very close
Don’t hate on me but I actually prefer the Dry Martini 🍸
ocd just sounds cleaner
ocd was fuller sounding but the cost was the winer
ocd ocd ocd
