  • It's a modern classic. First released in 2005, the fulltone OCD was a trailblazer praised for it's touch sensitivity and harmonic content. Over a decade later this pedal has seen 8 different iterations, possibly with more to come. Created by Mike Fuller and Fulltone effects the OCD has long been a favorite of the Tone Junkies. It's pedal with a story. So of everyone who has ever asked, "what's the story with all those OCD versions? This is the story of the Fulltone OCD

I just spent $500-ish on a used v1.1. I'm keeping a watch for some beat-up ones to grab. I don't know if these early ones are repairable? Unfortunately the tone is priceless. Just hate to spent that much for one to actually use... not collect.

@@heythere6983 I go off the S/N mostly. The V1.4 is known to have started around S/N 16016. I have seen used ones for sale going from S/N 16915 up to S/N 66482, the later ones (incl 66482) had the germanium clipping diode D2 removed/linked out. Those with D2 are true V1.4. Seen V1.7 starting at S/N 86299 to 156008. The early V1.7 used the V1.4 PCB, but marked up as V1.7 in black Sharpie on the case.

@@ToneJunkieTV I have owned the V2.0, V1.4 and V1.7 in that order and have played them off against each other. I prefer the V1.4 for clarity and gritty harmonics. The V2.0 has too much bass and the V1.7 sounds lifeless compared to the V1.4. It all depends on your guitar and amp, for me the V1.4 works best.

nice vid... someone brought me an OCD to play at a gig loved it, I went and bought one and hated mine. didn't know there were so many different ones at the time. Who knows which one I had compared to his.. It's really unfair for the builder to sell it as the same pedal.. there should be a number right on the front..anyway...thanks

Hey - long shot- did you play at Gwinnett arena years ago at the “Forward Conference”
I remember a dude that looked like you - on a deluxe reverb that had the best tone of all the guitarist in like 8 bands. (I was the head audio guy w a massive LAcoustic rig)
If that was you- very cool! I went and bought an OCD for my Twin and had a blast.
If it’s not you - your video was great
Well done on the info - editing- and your narration sounded all pro.
    Rock on!

Interesting history lesson. Was wondering why my 1.4 says 1.7 on the inside. Thanks!!!

1.1 is my favorite but they all sound cool. Great pedal.

Me too, but it’s the one I own, so I’m probably biased.

I opened my OCD and saw it was a 1.6. Great pedal!
I use it for a thick, creamy marshall style sound, since I use a handwound Little Green Wonder for the slightly driven, transparent sound.
Can agree that the OCD isn't the best clean boost since it can be a bit throaty.
I have a question; on the side it says it can take from 9V to 18V. What does it sound with 18V?

Really appreciate that. I was just looking through some new pedals and saw this right after buying my new OCD. Got the v2.0 version which is still pretty nice. But this was surprising to me to see such a significant difference between each pedal.

I have a v1.6 that I absolutely love. At one point, I had two 1.6 ones and to me, they sounded different, so I opened them up and sure enough, there was a resistor on a pot in one and not the other.

Steven Sefton I have heard of this. Apparently this change is present in 1.7 as well but first took place on some 1.6s

Hey bud curious which V1.6 sounded best? With or without the resistor?

They all sound good IMO.. I really liked the 1.1 and the 1.4 the best as they seemed t be less aggressive on the eq curve... I foolishly let my 1.4 go thinking it was the final version and I could always get a new one .... wrong ! So now I have 1.7 and just picked up 2.0. Of those two I like the 2.0... One thing to consider is sometimes things that sound better alone don;t do as well in a band mix and vice versa.

Definately subtle differences between some, big diff on others. 1.1 & 1.7 stand out as similar and flatter EQ, the rest might just vary by standard deviation of stacking component tolerances, except 2.0 which is low-mid heavy to my ear.

1.4 has been in my chain since it came out. I've had three, but 1.4 just plays well with ALL my amps, and really has more dynamics then the others But I'd take a 1.1 anyday as well. HUGE fan of Mike Fuller by the way.

Edit: My preference changed as the tone changed id actually say 1.4 or 1.7 was my favorite but version 2 for lower gain.
I actually liked the version 2 best, surprised they decided to go surface mount. It's not necessarily a bad thing but modding surface mount can be more difficult without an adjustable soldering iron or rework station. And people seem to prefer seeing larger components that are better visual representations of what they are. But with that said surface mount has many advantages for large scale manufacture and they can allow the pedal to fit in a much smaller enclosure but smaller pcbs seem to sacrifice some bassier full tone of its through hole larger counterparts. But with all that said I enjoyed to version 2 but I would be happy with any of the versions I'm sure.

You can see on the PCB of the 1.5 and 1.6 where they went away from the asymmetrical clipping by removing the Ge diode and just jumpering it. There's no provision on the 1.7 board for the Ge diode either. So, there's that.

I really appreciate that you took the time to do this video! Very nice! I'm sure everyone has their favorites and I think mine was probably 1.7 though 2.0 was a close 2nd. One thing I thought I noticed was it seemed like there might have been more noise in v 1.7 than in 2.0 which for me would tip the scale in favor of Vrs 2.0. Was I hearing that correctly and did you notice that in your comparison?
