    We had term insurance until recently..we are 78 and 79 and the term insurance date was nearly up. We have whole life just enough to pay cremation costs so our kids won't have to pay..we have no debt and plots and stone paid for. 😊

    I think an awesome series for you to do, or show would be how to live so that you don’t need to do spring, fall, heavy cleaning. That’s how I live, and my house stays perfectly clean perfectly in order 12 months out of the year. And you know what, it is much much easier, less overwhelming than people would think. Just a thought.

    Just curious Tawra, why was the “family medical emergency” not covered by insurance? Not meaning to be intrusive. Just wondering if your experience might help us to avoid the same.

    I live in company housing, northeast Ohio, owned by my employer. I only pay $350 per month. I live by myself and it's a 2 bedroom, 1,000 square foot, house. I do all the yardwork, grass mowing and snow shoveling, to get the cheaper rent but the maintenance man from the office does any needed repairs or maintenance in my house

    I am in east tennessee, my rent is $850 for an 3 bedroom 1 bath older house which is way lower than the rent average on my area. Been renting here for 8 years and landlord does raise it about $100 every year the last couple of years.

    My mortgage is 1200.00 and I get 2400.00 for rental. Paying down mortgage & it is less than 40k. While being rented, I’m doing big fixes (roof, painting) so I can write off those expenditures. First home paid in full. Will snowbird between the 1st and 2nd location, once all is buttoned up, paid off which I should do in 3 years .

    We don’t have a mortgage (THANK GOD)!!! We had our former house paid off, sold the rent house (was my grandparent’s then my dad’s then mine with each subsequent death) & when we moved to be closer to hubby’s immediate family members (MIL/FIL/BIL/SIL & our nibblings), we sold both houses (NEVER EVEN MADE IT ONTO THE MARKET FOR EITHER ONE) & within less than a month of buying this house - our former house FINALLY SOLD (Oklahoma storms am I right? Had to fix a few things & pushed closing out several times) this one was completely paid off. We are in the process of building our emergency fund back up to $10k (when the pandemic hit, we had over $20k which was seriously needed because 1- we never got a check from the government & 2- everything kept having issues… like forget in 3’s it was more like in 6’s… microwave fire, BOTH refrigerators were completely out… which meant 1 of the freezers was out… & in the past 4 years we’ve had BOTH freezers not working & lost all of that food ~ have temp gauges now so 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️).

    Here in Jacksonville FL, the rent for the house next door to where I live is $2000 monthly. That does include a pool with pool cleaning services. The neighborhood on average is about $16-1700 for a 2 bedroom home with 1 bath. I am lucky my brother is renting me the house for "insurance and tax" payments.

    Regarding the dividends that people were talking about on whole life insurance, it is not something being given to you by the insurance company. It is a return of your own money because the amount that they collected was more than the cost of the insurance and the remainder is being returned to you.
    The cash value in whole life insurance is taken away if you collect the face amount of the insurance if the insured passes away. You do not receive it because the beneficiaries only get the face amount. The cash value can be taken out, if you terminate the insurance coverage. but it would be nowhere near what you paid into the policy.

    We always paid less than 1000 to rent a house the past almost 20 years. Rent is going up though so if we moved not sure we could keep it below that now. We have lived in duplexes too. I do not recommend an apartment if you have kids ( that was horrible) but having a duplex was fine. We have lived in lots of different rentals in the same area.

    RENT: I’m in metro Detroit. I’m very fortunate, because while I’ve seen similar rates in this specific area, I know the rates in the immediately surrounding area are 20%-40% higher. My rent is $1,028 for a 2 BR, 1 bath. Each unit has a terrace, we have a pool, each unit has covered parking for 1 vehicle (doesn’t cost extra). We’re across the street from a shopping center, less than 5 minutes from 2 freeways, less than 10 from another and a major tourist attraction. The best part: my neighbors. As long as I’m here, I want them here too. We’ve got a good bunch in my building.
    CABLE: in the 21 years i've lived on my own, i've not had cable. i haven't had any streaming subscriptions either. i was on a relative's netflix account - until i wasn't. LOL i would just sign up for free trials for other services. my thing has always been, i don't need to sit in front of the tv anymore than i already do.

    I was watching a utube show, channel is A More Perfect Union. It was about the USPS. I think they were in Cheyenne Wyoming. They were talking about how the USPS used to have people sort the mail at each post office. But now they only want like one sort center so even if you're mailing something that is going across the other side of town it goes to the sort center first, gets sorted, then sent out again. It totally makes now sense. But that's big government for you.

    Curious, since this emergency you’ve had that has forced you to use credit cards (thankfully a 0%) if it has made you think any differently about putting so much towards your house. We are currently trying to decide how much to throw at our house, versus save for emergencies…we’ve currently been trying to have around $5,000 and are ready to tackle the house, but stuff like
    This makes me wonder?
    Would love a video on your thoughts?
    (PS- I though I left a comment allready…but sometimes my phone is weird. Hopefully you didn’t take me wrong and delete . I’m not being AT ALL critical of your decision. We are ready to do the same thing…just curious if you’d do anything different? Or if it was just so wildly random and you can’t really prepare for it and you still thinks it’s best to tackle
    The house after a 3-6 months savings….

    • @LivingOnADime
      @LivingOnADime  Місяць тому

      We had 6 months living expenses saved up and that was all gone plus a good chunk on the credit cards. We didn't start paying on the house until we had the months. So we pretty much did everything "right" but life happens sometimes despite our best planning. If you don't think $5,000 is enough then save up $20,000 and then start paying it off.

    • @creativelycountry1617
      @creativelycountry1617 Місяць тому +2

      @@LivingOnADime ok, thanks! Ya, we so bad want the house paid off! But it is at 3.25% so it’s like with current interest rates…do we just keep paying the normal monthly payment and save, save otherwise. We probably would be wise to have more like 20-25,000 before we get too aggressive. And as you say, we can prepare and plan, but life still throw’s curveballs!
      Praying the Mother’s Day sale helps you out a lot!!! Appreciate your videos ☺️
