I LOVE Kristie, first saw her on the post Olympic tour in '84 or maybe early '85...she was phenomenal and I left there raving about her charisma and tumbling..she had it all!!!
It’s interesting to hear her perspective throughout the years. From the young gymnast to the Oprah show in ‘95 to becoming a coach/domestic + international judge. The way she has shifted and grown is obvious and compelling. To be brought up with Mary Lou and Rhonda around is so interesting to me and how she navigated the politics of gymnastics- especially living in the South.
I had the amazing experience of Working with her right after she retired. What a great human and amazing that. She has let what happens in the past and is so positive ( coach with her at international gymnastics camp)
So glad she’s well! Loved watching her as a little girl but she’s become a Phoenix! Go Christy for being an amazing coach, Mom, woman and advocate! She’s a bad #%^ ❤ you Christy! Thankful for your honest courage and perspective
I have always wanted to see Kristie’s UB from 1988 trials and Championships… she used a Gienger but their is no footage on UA-cam that I know of or comes up in searches.
I’m so glad Kristie Phillips is still involved in gymnastics, and more importantly, a devoted mom to her kids. And Kristie, I hear ya regarding teenage daughters! We raised two (and made it through!). 💕
I was such a huge fan of Kristie's (one of many). My hear broke for her when she was placed as a 2nd alternate. It is so wonderful to hear that she is doing well today and thriving.
I wish we could see Kristie better in the interview? ANd what the hek happened to Jenny Kirk? Why didn't she want to ask questions?? This interview had some strange things going on it but! I loved it!!!
Great interview. Thank you! It does seem to me that the gymnasts of the 1980s who trained with the Karolyi’s have a stoic regard about them. They are careful and almost defensive when they talk about them…or so it seems to me. Different time and generation for sure.
That is SOOOOOOOO awful what they said about her and her mom. So inappropriate. she was a a beautiful gymnast and teenager. So sick. those commentators were so out of line
Kristie was kept off the 1988 Olympic team by the Karolyis, in my opinion. Marta told USA Today in 1987 that Phillips "has had some problems with her weight, mostly because her heredity is not the best. Her mother is quite heavy". The videos of her at 1988 Nationals and Olympic Trials clearly show that she was definitely good enough to be on the team, but the Karolyis wanted to send a message to other gymnastics and their parents that you couldn't be on the team if you did anything they didn't like.
interesting how she supports Karolyi and doesnt say anything negative about him. Maybe because she still is in the sport and a judge. I DONT KNOW maybe she truly had a good experience interesting.
I remember watching Kristie in the 80s and really enjoyed her performances. It was unfortunate that when puberty hit, she was treated so harshly by the Karolyis and the judges. Puberty was a gymnast's death. Simone still competing in her mid 20s has helped smash that stereotype
Gymnasts started tending older before Simone’s time. See for example Svetlana Khorkina placing 2nd in the all around in her third Olympics in 2004 at age 25. The issue was the Károlyis were obsessed with prepubescent small gymnasts thinking that was the only way to win based on their results from the 70s and 80s.
I think she means they are going to college. As someone who has two kids in college I know exactly what she means when she says she has three years left with her kids cuz the. They grow up and move out. It’s really hard to see them go so her decision to be with them the last three years is golden. Sometimes you don’t realize you have only a few years left with them and then realize it when they are gone and you wish you could go back and enjoy them more
Wow! Best interview with Kristi Phillips! Things I’ve wanted to know for years! Thank you
Gosh love this. she was my favorite. I went to see her in the American cup in Virginia in 1987. She was amazing.

Yeah it's a very strange layout

why is Jennie on this? Love her but is she back on TSL?
We host a show together on zoom twice a week. We have done this since 2019. It is through Patreon - TSL Live.
Very fascinating that Elise Ray was the right personality for Cirque a few years later or so and Kristie was too happy and bubbly.
Where do Kristie’s kids go after those 3 years? lol
Funny way of phrasing it.
