Measure the distance from the top with a ruler, not your hand. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just professional.

Will this method prevent a gap from happening between the wall and wood panel? Or will it still have a gap in between?

It should not have a gap. If there is any gap it may be because the panel is warped.
