I am glad that I have no interest in cards, magic or gambling. Because I simply cannot focus on anything like the way he is dealing the cards and would lose every time. I just enjoy the way these are presented
Preternaturally gifted. Amazing. Also a great voice for narration. I want to believe, I hope, he was a decent human being - only because I like the stage persona so much.
phah the last deal isnt a centre deal. He first stacks the deck putting four cards in-between the aces once he has controlled them after putting them "back into the middle of the deck" he then second deals the aces to his hand making it look like a centre deal but this whole show/routine is well thought out and well presented :)
The last deal is not from centre of the deck, but well thought out illusion. At 2:57 he stacks the aces (putting 4 card in between each). Then he puts couple cards on top of the first ace, runs the cards from top (as a schuffle) until there's just 5 cards left on top of the first ace. After that he deals the cards and when he deals to himself he deals second card from the deck. Wonderful illusion, well thought out as well the rest of the show.
The aces remain together the whole time - he uses an overhand shuffle until there are 5 cards left above the aces, then he deals the other hands as normal and second deals himself an ace. All the remaining cards for his opponents are dealt from the bottom, and the aces are always a second deal.
nope thats not how he does it, he puts 5 cards on top of first ace and staks rest of the three aces by 4 cards in between. he second deals aces then.....ricky jay cant do an actual center deal thats why he resorts to psuedo center deal
Just to clarify, ricky Jay is the best living magician. Steve forte, Richard Turner, and jason england have been acknowledged as superior card handlers, although their performances are still not at this level.
Yeah sure. I believe Paul Wilson and Darwin Ortiz are as good as him. Jason England is even better. Then the true masters of this art are of course Steve Forte and Richard turner :)
this was a case of a great magician explaining the method of gamblers to attain a certain purpose but at the same time, using these methods against his spectators who, satisfied that now they know how false deals are accomplished. With due respect to Ricky Jay, I have no doubt that he can do the center deal...but the last deal was definitely not a CENTER DEAL....
Actually it's not... He uses an overhand shuffle until there are 5 cards above the aces, then he deals 4 from the top, second deals an ace, then bottom deals the remaining cards for his 'opponents' and uses the second deal for the remaining aces. It may not be a centre deal but it's a very convincing and clever manipulation, and he's still the master in my eyes.
It isn't a trick it is exactly what Ricky said. If you were a magician you would understand perfectly. Since you are not you really don't need to know.
Ricky Jay is a fav. Ok, but did he false shuffle and not move the cards and center deal? False shuffle and place all the aces in the center? Or false shuffle and place all the aces on the bottom and bottom deal and skip center dealing? One can only speculate and admire the master.
@generalmaximus5 There are several ways to do this effect. I think it unlikely he's using gaffed cards since either spectator could clearly see if there were breaks in the deck due to short cards or crimps. I've been in magic for going on 15 years. I've never heard of "magician's oil".
Which second deal does Jay use here? Strike or Pushoff? IMO England is the best at centers and bottoms right now, but Ricky Jay's second is the most deceptive and the best performed I've ever seen-- ever. Aboslutely imperceptible.
@RS1963 Yeah but why taking credit over something that you know that it is not true? Obviously as a magician you expect something better from Ricky Jay. Darwin Ortiz shows a great demo on center dealing without faking the center deal. I'm just saying that he should've done it.. I was disappointed when I saw this, but that doesn't make him a bad magician...
I surmise your vision is impaired. If you watch clearly, you will see the individual/respective cards actually being placed in between groups of cards. While the method certainly wasn't a 'center' deal, I would consider asserting that the 4 cards used were on the bottom a mere wild guess, if anything (or of course if the above mention isn't true).
@RS1963 OMG you are right, that was not explained on the book of Expert at the Card Table it was explained on Center Deal by Allen Kennedy, I apologize for the confusion, I was thinking also of that one book by Karl Johnson named The Magician and The Cardsharp in which he told that old old old story about The Professor and Allen Kennedy ... For some reason it got me confused.. And I will agree with you on this one since for lay people it is the same and that was the main purpose of it.
@RS1963 @RS1963 I understand what you mean about magicians doing those things, however, Ricky Jay has a reputation as a magician and as a performer and in this trick he only gives credit to his reputation as a performer not as a magician. Steve Forte he is more of a performer than a magician and its understandable that he would do that, but no Ricky Jay, he is a great magician as well.
I think he actually did it the set up would require ddddd u dddd u dddd u dddd u d means face down cards, u means face up cards He had 9 cards up on top of the first face up ace. he shuffled 4 of them to the bottom to make the set up work. I could not see him set up the rest of the deck clearly, but I think he did set them up. People might dislike this comment, but I do want to say it. And it is possible to deal aces from the center I will find the link and post it
@xRNEx I think that all the aces are in the bottom, one next to the others. He only puts three or four additional cards in the bottom, those cards he showed us. He starts by bottom dealing for the three first cards and then the aces are in the bottom! He just has to perform an other bottom dealing for each ace, and that's it.
I understand that the center deal it is extremely hard to perform and master, it was meant for exhibition only just like Ricky Jay was doing it in this video. Center deal has been explained in great detail in the book of Expert at the Card Table by S.W. Erdnase (E.S Andrews) and in Revolutionary Card Technique by Ed Marlo and in both it has been offered for exhibition and that is exactly what Ricky Jay was doing in here.
Rikki Jay is as legit as they come. If anyone can centre deal, he can. And he just did, so there. Just because you guys can't do it, doesn't mean it's impossible
That skype sound made me check my computer twice. I had thought I had shut down my skype and was still getting messages. Quite confusing, to say the least!
jonoisgood “the hop, the pass, the shift saute with poot” which is not a move but rather combination of moves. The hop, the pass, the shift, that is. The ending is just thrown in there.
@Masterofpew There does exist a real center deal. However, it its hard to perform and master. What he did was either a second or bottom deal but he's so good I can't see which of two :)
that skype confused the shit out of me
I clicked the comments right as that happened. I was hella confused
Lol
it made me check my notifications and now i'm installing driver updates, thank you skype noise.
Better card dealers? Probably. But he has a combination of theatricality and screen presence ONTOP of legendary skills which makes him so notable.
We've lost a master. So long, Mr. Jay.
All the recent tributes to this man's genius fail to mention he can fart a Skype noise. Wonderfully talented man RIP
Oh, is that what that was?
lol
R.I.P. Ricky Jay. Amazing human being 🙏
Any body else check there Skype 1:14

Sounds like my Skype was notifying me of a message while I was recording the video. Oops!

Preternaturally gifted. Amazing. Also a great voice for narration.

He was the absolute master. RIP Ricky Jay. We’ll miss you.

+Frank Maloy Well spotted. I have heard of fake false deals, lol

I thought that wasn't a genuine centre deal! Nice spot
nope thats not how he does it, he puts 5 cards on top of first ace and staks rest of the three aces by 4 cards in between. he second deals aces then.....ricky jay cant do an actual center deal thats why he resorts to psuedo center deal
Ricky Jay😍🥺
Humorous Magic
Just to clarify, ricky Jay is the best living magician. Steve forte, Richard Turner, and jason england have been acknowledged as superior card handlers, although their performances are still not at this level.
"and that would be cheating..." priceless.
Seriously mind blowing. I love, respect, and miss you Ricky Jay…. Rest in peace.
I'm still pulling seconds and ripping bottoms in 2018 .......15 years of practice......
Ricky’s delivery is the epitome of droll.
Thanks a ton for adding this video. Ricky Jay is amazing. Pretty cool to see the 3 main kinds of false deals done by such a pro.
Yeah sure. I believe Paul Wilson and Darwin Ortiz are as good as him. Jason England is even better. Then the true masters of this art are of course Steve Forte and Richard turner :)
Why does it make that "bloop" noise when he reaches between his legs at 1:14? Is that a trick too?
this was a case of a great magician explaining the method of gamblers to attain a certain purpose but at the same time, using these methods against his spectators who, satisfied that now they know how false deals are accomplished.
With due respect to Ricky Jay, I have no doubt that he can do the center deal...but the last deal was definitely not a CENTER DEAL....
Funny how, decades later, so many are still in denial about the center deal.
is it real? :o
I don't know if this is center deal, but Jason England's tutorial is very clear. It exists !!!
yes that is indeed a real center deal.
Actually it's not... u think ricky jay did a legit center deal??? it was totally a second deal. he performed what is called a pseudo center deal
I miss Ricky Jay so much! Truly a Master of the Arcane Arts.
I remember when this show was on HBO. One of my favorite magic shows I've ever seen on TV.
It isn't a trick it is exactly what Ricky said. If you were a magician you would understand perfectly. Since you are not you really don't need to know.
The very best

@Audi0Phil To show you even when the cards are face up, you couldn't tell they came from the middle.
lmfao i tought it was my skype :))
so knowing this, how is anyone ever supposed to play poker again? or any other card game in a casino, for that matter
How did he do it?

Anyone else just staring at his hands and not listening
Love Ricky Jay, but still don't get how this is remotely possible even with 100 years of practice. I must be missing something.
Didn't know him till Deadwood.

2nd dealing so frigging hard. I cant belive there people out there who can do it consistently.
Ricky shows you how to manipulate the deck without revealing his methods. Also a fine actor.
I would never want to play poker with that guy everybody would lose immediately
Very well, but if you'd phrased your original comment more clearly, I wouldn't have followed up saying that you'd missed one...
@everio17 No disrespect inended here, but it's patter, Jay means to entertain with this bit, not necessarily educate.

I can do the trick easy did see how he did it at first time. Can not peform so gud as ricky jay. Ricky jay own

Ricky, I regret that I missed the chance to shake your hand and call you the GOAT.
Christ almighty, it's like I'm sittin here playing cards with my brother's kids or somethin.
i actually know how to center deal, but nowhere close to performing it... but, in different places... ergh, hard...
Rikki Jay is as legit as they come. If anyone can centre deal, he can. And he just did, so there. Just because you guys can't do it, doesn't mean it's impossible
@TonyRush lol the funny thing is that i thought someone was skyping me... and i checked but i was offline... i got confused...lol
@TonyRush haha, when the skype noise went off, i had to check mine to make sure it wasnt mine.
i think he does a "pinky break" when putting the aces in the center, not sure though
No, three. Second-dealing at 0:15, bottom-dealing at 0:45 and centre-dealing at 3:20.
Or he could just do a pass... but that move sounds much more interesting.
That skype sound made me check my computer twice. I had thought I had shut down my skype and was still getting messages. Quite confusing, to say the least!
Thumbs up if you exited full screen to check your Skype at 1:43.
Wow. RIP.
@TonyRush
LOL i quit the fullscreen to check my skype... and was like wth no new conversaton :P
Wow! The aces look like they just appear out of nowhere, actually they probably are lol!
Ok play the video and hold 1 and look. And then hold 8 and listen... lol
Its because the face up aces are bend the opposite way leaving a space within the deck where the aces are
@149scrat its just on the right time when the dude on the right pulls someting out his nose..
I remember when i was really into magic. Ricky jay was a great man and a good entertainer. Sad he passed.
@TonyRush yeah that messed with me, I checked my skype to see nothing

Please don't forget his role as the cameraman/ film editor for Jack Horner AND his role as Eddie Sawyer on DEADWOOD.
Bond too, killed by villain.
Wow.
I figured it out! Its false dealing. Im so smart.
That was not center dealing.
@149scrat Sounds like a skype I.M tone!
press 4 three times then 5
This is why I never play cards!
Great showmanship, amazing magic
what grip is he using for the bottom deal?
Is there anybody better than Ricky Jay at this?
Almost as good? Id like to be just as good :L
Surely you jest. Yes I just called you Shirley.

the bottom deal is a bit more obvious than the second deal, I think, even when Ricky does it
jonoisgood “the hop, the pass, the shift saute with poot” which is not a move but rather combination of moves. The hop, the pass, the shift, that is. The ending is just thrown in there.
wow, you and Houdini..
Ricky Jay is a god!
@Masterofpew There does exist a real center deal. However, it its hard to perform and master. What he did was either a second or bottom deal but he's so good I can't see which of two :)
RIP Ricky Jay
