Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 5 new videos every week! Tuesday through Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we transition from city dwellers to full time homesteaders!

I think your unbiased experiment worked wonders and gave other homesteaders a great understanding of raising chickens. Now we know why the Cornish Cross is so popular... Facts show they are cheaper to raise and a tastier bird. Thanks Kevin, Sarah, Samantha, and Grace!!

You two did an awesome job on this comparison test!! I was truly surprised in the taste test but then the light bulb clicked on and realized that they both ate grain. Because all of my chickens are free range including the FR the meat just tastes different (better) and the egg yolks are almost red. Your feed ratio is what made me decide to phase out my FR’s and stick with my Brahma chicken’s for my fresh meat. When seeing your feed consumption I started paying closer attention and saw the FR are what doubled my feed bill. I know how much extra time and work went into this test and just can’t say how much I appreciate your attention to details (nerdy chicken math and all)! Thanks so much and have a very Merry Christmas and may you prosper greatly in 2019!!

Thanks for doing the work for us!
You could try sprouting your feed grain. It really boosts the ratio and the end nutritional value of the bird you end up eating. I learned how to do this from Art and Bree's channel. It's very easily and it just a couple minutes a day.

We just processed our first batch of FR meat birds. We were very impressed with the flavor and juiciness of it. All of our customers have said the same. Our next batch coming in September will be CC. We’ll see which one we like better.

Objective Viewer: Not really very objective are you then. The experiment was extremely fair throughout the whole process and the individual comparisons were done on same gender chickens. You surely can’t ignore the fact that each and every person who tasted the cooked chicken all preferred the same bird.

Kevin and Sarah.....thanks for the side by side comparison. I was not surprised at the end results. Josh from Stoney Ridge Farmer raised Freedom Ranger and Cornish Cross, and he had similar results in terms of growth rate, harvest size, and cost. Videos like this help so many people make better choices in terms of livestock in their efforts to get out of the grasp of corporate food production.
I wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and look forward to more amazing videos in the coming New Year. God Bless!

This is a fair like-for-like comparison, but as soon as I saw you cooked them identically, I knew the Cornish would be preferred. We have found Rangers need to be cooked lower and slower than Cornish X in order to have that awesome flavor. I do think FR taste better when cooked that way, but for the other reasons you addressed I think we'll be raising CX next year as well

I'm about to start raising my sustainable flock (Black Australorps will be my first experience) and I think I will also raise some cornish cross in the meantime while the Australorps are growing up. I will keep a separate breeding flock for the Australorp hatching eggs to incubate and raise ongoing. But if the australorps don't fill out well I may downsize my Australorps and try freedom rangers or Cx.

Thank you for this series. Much appreciation for the time spent sharing in the raising of chickens and recording & editing. Your results and opinions along the way were similar to others who we trust with the cost of raising and taste of the final product. It was a plus that you were not given free chicks to sway your results as some other channels were. We were surprised by the size of your FR's especially the breast meat as others had tender size dark colored breast meat. It's of great importance to us that you disclosed interaction with the hatchery that sells FR's and their dissatisfaction in your results. We will continue to raise CC. Happy holidays to your family! 🎄👍

I had that thought also. That was the only way I could tell that the taste test experiment was a little unbalanced. And @Summer Robinson, that was a recommendation to get them to butchering size, yes. Doesn't change the fact that they Were still 2 weeks older though. Did it make a difference? Can't really know since they didn't do the taste test right after butchering one each of the chickens when they were the same age. Maybe something to try for next year if they try this experiment again

    • @terrim.602
      @terrim.602 5 років тому +18

@@keandric2765 Since their goal grow out is not or never has been about age, this has nothing to do with their HOME experiment. Their goal is a final net weight of 6-6 1/2 #'s. They do not care about age, only weight and enough meat on the bird (and rabbits) to feed their family. It was not scientific experiment! It was a comparison of which one works best for them.
They work hard at figuring how much, what breed, what type to grow regardless if it's meat, veggies, or herbs. It's all about the amount and taste of food for their family. Kuddos to them!

    • @scienceoflifeteacher9773

Freedom rangers also have more muscular legs and probably less fat/leaner, which would make it tougher and drier! We are also used to eating a Cornish Cross (sold in grocery stores and served in restaurants). Think of it as grain fed vs grass fed beef! Awesome video- well done!!

Thank you all so much for breaking this down into these specifics. You've saved us a lot of time, guess work, trial and error, and have helped us make an informed decision. Since we prefer almost identicle methods for rearing, we will be going with Cornish Cross for our main chicken meat source, plus the culls from our Australorp flock. We will be attempting to get a bit of savings in the feed to meat conversion cost by growing at least a portion of our feed, which we are also hoping will help us get an improved flavor profile.

So much wonderful information in your series. I will start my homestead this year so it couldn't have come at a better time. I always heard that the better taste of the rangers made the extra expense with it. Thank you so much for all the great information you share.

There is a special market for freedom rangers raised a particular way in the Chinese community.
They can fetch a much higher price in the end.
