You're right mate. I respect his opinion and it is his right to not like this song, but it seems like he only caught most of the simple bars and missed most of the more complex bars and doubles etc, which kinda counter acts some of his points. 🙂

@@Steven90108Runs Yeah, it's totally legit to not like it aesthetically. It's just not your thing. That's fine, but some of his criticisms are more like saying that you don't rate the lyrics to a song, in a language that you don't understand. That may be a failing of the track in the broader sense, as it does require the listener to either have some foreknowledge, or be highly perceptive and able to interpret the thread through the references and callbacks. Honestly, there were a couple of references that I didn't get, but I got enough to know that those I didn't, were a failing on my part.

You don't understand that he uses his British humor. He is sarcastic. He loves British references, some references go again through his work, like him being a falling Angel, being Robinhood, being the new King Arthur. He is an anarchist.
He has so many amazing songs.
His Shakespearean tribute- The tales of Jenny and Screech, and Violet. The Tracks Money Game 1 and 2. His love music trilogy, his darker songs Heretic, Diazapam, Dominoes and How to be me, Chalk Outlines, depression and insomnia. His rap tracks are all different with different vibes. Genesis, Hunger, Power, What you want, Everybody drops, Life is funny.
Then there is his band, the Big Push and loads of amazing live busking videos and music videos.
Then there is his collaborations with Sam Thomkins, (Blindeyed, What went wrong 1 and 2, loads of live performances ) who now is touring with Justin Bieber
You haven't heard anything yet buddy. You have never seen someone this versatile. 😅❤

It cracked me up when you mentioned him going after the lowest hanging fruit when I think you missed the entire concept of this music video. There is a battle going on in this video that is really easy to miss. There is a Ren in pure white who is like a full spoon of sugar. He wanted to show that Ren as someone that is 'good' or marry (Happy). Then there is a Ren in black who is violent and the kind to kill a pacifist. And the scene where they are literally in opposite sides of the street like they are about to fight each other. Ren literally put a whole hidden ass story in his video. Dope.
From your comments I highly recommend Genesis by him though. Awesome reaction!

I never usually break down my own words because I love letting people apply their own meaning, but there was one line I wanted to explain. The title of the song. Alot of people took this to mean "The greatest Of Our Time"
"Look for all the answers that I never seem to find,
Till then I guess I'm still the illest of our time"
Its my reluctance to be the illest - the clue is in the word 'guess' - ive spent the better part of a decade looking for solutions to the damage lyme disease dealt with countless doctors visits, and am still in that boat. "Illest" can also mean "dopest" "best" etc. So it's a bit of a double entendre. Same as "Sick boi"
This theme is repeated with the line "elementary dear Watson you might find" cause Sherlock Holmes was always searching for the clues to piece the puzzle together, which is very relatable when trying to piece together parts of a very complex health picture, anyone with a very complex illness will relate to almost having to become your own detective.

Acceptance that this might just be the cards I've been dealt.
To search for answers and simultaneously accept that chronic illness may be your fate is a bit of a paradox because it is the rejection of acceptance that spurs you forward in the pursuit of answers, but it is the acceptance that you may always be sick that let's you lead a more peaceful life... so one must walk this contradictory line between both opposing states to have the motivation to find the answers whilst not being so outcome dependent. Still haven't mastered this, but think it's an interesting concept" posted by Ren Gill (The Illest of the Ill)
Me: To me it's like Ren is psyching himself up to get bigger, how much bigger? Big enough to have the power to create a standardized treatment for Lyme Disease & an early detection system... hyuge you gotta be hyuge. That takes millions upon millions upon millions of dollars, but Ren ain't rich never has been most of the money goes to medicine. Some of the reactors have more subscribers than he does. that's why he feels like Atlas sometimes maybe like the weight of the medical world is on his shoulders but he can't shrug it off. he got a go fund me for his medical bills but I doubt it covers much medicine is crazy expensive, but if he ever gets Eminem level money Jay Z level money Kanye level money he might actually make a mark on this world far better than the aforementioned.

I thought the same the first couple of times I heard this tune in terms of the rhyme pay-off but I thought about it’s context with the “you’ll find yourself in the mind of the illest of our time”, we’re basically in his head with all his random memories. Memories of films he watched as a kid, wrestling, Mike Tyson biting ears, philosophical musings, and general meandering thoughts - when you’re the “illest” these random thoughts and memories will circulate your brain. Even “Because Im Mary like Poppins” has a purpose, even though it kinda misses on first listen.
‘Genesis’ is straight hip hop with a more conventional approach. I guarantee that will impress you - not a “low hanging fruit” bar to be heard.

What Ren is is simple: he's a story teller, a modern age Bard. He's versatile in his artistry, complex with his poeticness. Ren speaks to our souls and educates us on things we would never think twice about. His music requires multiple listens to catch everything said. The complexity of the subjects found in many of his songs may be missed the first time. Ren is a gift from the heavens above, sent down to show us that we're not alone. Listen here my man, you're reaction videos are FIRE... F R E I X... FIRE
My only criticism here that you've gone ahead and discounted a whole aspect of the art which is where Ren uses some of the most well known icons of historical pop culture and either run them as words, or as flows. The references to Mary Poppins and Robin Hood, firstly they came close together, keeping you in movieland, and those are two icons of UK and Irish movie history from his generations childhood. Those are like little golden drops of hitting an absurd pop culture reference, and being so absurd as to avoid modern, topical pop culture and hit really soft aspects of all of our childhoods. Some of the raps may seem like low hanging fruit, but that's because he's aiming at them. It's a super creative way of using pop-culture references in lyrics, but done without being a bro and just talking about lambos and crystal.

The entire last arc of the song (from "I don't feel so well") is about his brain damage from undiagnosed Lyme disease and certainly tells a story... He's got noodles for brains (Head in Hong Kong, wonton soup / Is what I have for brains, I know), is near death (Banished from the heavens but I'm knocking on the sky), is in an impossible place (Travel to the corner of my cornea and mind [i.e. there are no corners in a sphere]), and is desperately looking for answers that he can't seem to find. Quite sad ending actually, "Till then, I guess I'm still the illest of our time."

I think that he is a musical genius by the way he can play his guitar. Rock, rap, opera, folk, jazz, etc.... He can play any genre of music and make it sound great..... In the stagnant pool of shite, that is the music business, it's refreshing to hear a real artist who can actually sing the songs that he writes, while he plays a real instrument at the same time.... I think that he is an amazing performer too.....

Alternative reaction to your 2nd time seeing Ren 😮 okay fair play but the rabbit hole deepens into a warren turn left get his buskin, turn right get it from his singing collaborations, straight on and you can have illest and future endeavors yet to be released. But go back and you get a plethora of rap, pop, heavy and oh Bardcore 👍

Try his song Genesis, which is much more tropical, talking about his personal illnesses. Or, for singing, try Chalk Outlines. Or try Blind Eyed, with Sam Tompkins.

If you like when he's talking about something, check out Money Game 1 & 2. Personally prefer 1 (I feel 2 is a bit over-produced and I prefer it when his stuff is stripped back), but 2 features a stonking description of capitalism using She Sells Seashells by the Sea Shore.

True on the "low hanging fruit" comment, but he takes the obvious and makes it his own. Sort of like a chef. Sure anyone can cook and the ingredients are there, but what you do with it is the point. You should do "The Hunger" next and see what you think. Who am I kidding? The dude's whole catalogue is fire.
Edit to say: we are reaching a point where everything is derivative of something at this point, so the Vinn diagram is getting crowded as far as sounds and styles go.

You got something else on your mind distracting you maybe? I say this because most of this song went right by you, and what you caught you only caught at a shallow level. I can understand not liking an artist's output, it's all subjective, but it seems to me you're confusing your not understanding/catching multilayered references with there being not much actual content. Ren packs a whole lot into his songs, and in my experience, exactly none of it is filler.

You say Hi Ren was more rap and this more music?..low hanging fruit....wow, we are not on same page musically. I just checked out one of your raps...I couldnt even hear half the words (not clearly spoken), excessive n word/profanity, bitches and jewelry and how tough/great you are. Rens bringing back fun old school style rap back that everyone can relate to and enjoy, And adding new flows and techniques. Rap hasnt been fun/enjoyable in decades. I like seeing someone that wants to have fun and not boast their street cred.

Going through the comments, I agree there many shades of Ren, every song you'll pick will be different and will show you something new and unexpected. If you didn't like this one, the next one is an entirely new journey - I would suggest actually something different - Blind Eyed live version with Sam Tompkins, MC session is a favorite, but all are great! Genesis, Power for rap. Hunger and Loosing it are fire, but if you want to get the lyrics and references maybe it's better to know more about him and UK to get all the references.

Ren whether you dislike his tracks or not is talented to the max. I'm 60 and have seen a lot of talented artists. Ren is top tier in music, lyrics, usually it goes totally without saying.

If you don't know Ren's personal story some of his lyrics can come across a little simplistic because he does reference his life experience. I have listened to a bunch of Ren and read about him and what he has gone through in his life. He is super dope, super talented and incredibly versatile. I think if you knew more about Ren you might feel a little different homie. But I'm always gonna rock with the KBD Family regardless. Shout out Kso, Milk, J-Mo and the whole KBD Family!! ✌️❤️!!
