Ren is Welsh. The opening is like a eulogy to himself and if I remember correctly it translates to: Pain is my teacher. It broke my smile. My bones feel old. Here lies the body of Ren. His accent is a mash up of Welsh and English and all his own. Some people can recover without long term effects from Lyme Disease, but for Ren it was misdiagnosed as multiple other things for 6+ years. He'd been treated for those other things that he hadn't actually had including mental disorders. As a result of the untreated Lyme he developed brain damage, nerve damage and a few autoimmune disorders.
No that’s not right, if you hear Ren speak English you’d never know he was welsh, there’s not a hint a welsh accent, it’s very much South Coast English with a smattering of London Estuary thrown in. Welsh is very distinct, it’s very sing song in its pronunciation and it’s very clear when you hear him speaking Welsh but invisible when he speaks English. In a sense his English accent is ‘contrived’ in the sense that it’s the accent he chose to adopt but it’s almost certain it’s not the accent he would have had during his childhood being brought up in a very Welsh part of N Wales.

Yes a tick bite can cause all this. Lyme disease, especially if not treated quickly, is nasty… and Ren went undiagnosed for YEARS! Hence the name of the album Sick Boi, and all the despair that pushed him to the edge of doing the things you don’t like being spoken about. Eventually he got treatment (stem cell) and is now trying to get his brain fixed, and then hopefully deal with his other autoimmune issues. One tick bite… years of pain! Crazy isn’t it.
The disease is incredibly difficult to identify. In the medical world it is often referred to as ‘The Great Pretender’ because it mimics so many other diseases. If you’re bitten and fortunate, you’ll know because you get a bulls-eye shaped bruise / rash at the bite site. Then you know you’ve been bitten and if you go straight to the Dr, about 70% of victims can be cured with a short treatment of antibiotics. In 30% of cases this doesn’t help and people will still develop the disease. The worst is when your bitten in a place unknown to you, like your head where the bruise is hidden so you can then carry the disease for years before it begins to manifest itself. This is when the disease does most damage and is probably what happened to Ren.
One thing that I almost never see mentioned under Ren videos where this topic comes up. Lyme disease, also known as Borreliosis is usually not that bad as Ren's version of it. I know two people who have had it. They can go years with no symptoms and then feel really tired, drowsy and dizzy for few hours or few days. In Ren's case it triggered an auto-immune disease which really fcked him up, but usually it doesn't go like that. On the other hand, ticks carry another desease called encephalitis which is basically inflammation of brain which can kill you in weeks. Luckily can vaccinate yourself against encephalitis. In my home country this vaccine is heavily propagated and most people do this vaccination. There is no vaccination against borreliosis (Lyme disease) though. Just to be clear, I am not putting down or doub Ren's experience and it can be this bad or even worse. Only thing I'm saying is when you get Lyme Disease it doesn't usually mean that it will be as bad for you as it has been for Ren. It can be a very manageable disease.
That’s all spot on. Interestingly it seems that some people have a natural immunity to Lyme’s. This is probably a product of evolution, where total or a degree of immunity developed over 1000’s of years, when this people lived in areas with a high prevalence of ticks. Ren was for sure, extremely unfortunate to have developed such an extreme level of autoimmune response but whilst at the more extreme end of the spectrum, he certainly isn’t alone.

All Ren’s breathtaking music comes from his pain. That’s how he got through this awful illness he got. Even now he’s making music while getting treatment in Canada. His busking videos are so good. This reaction is better than the last one.
This is the story of him falling into psychosis as a result of the illness, the mis-diagnosis and mistreatment. His body and brain were falling apart. Lyme can be treated if you catch the earliest indications the red bullseye around the tick bite in the day or two after the it bit you. But those symptoms, aren’t always visible and Lyme is much more rare here in the U.K. so the knowledge to even look for that isn’t as well known. Abd he was a teenager who went camping with friends ;I’m sure there as booze, etc) and teens can be stupid. So he only began seeing symptoms at the next stage and those are vague: pain, tiredness, stomach issues.

As others have mentioned, Ren is Welsh, but his accent is heavily influenced by the years he spent in Brighton (a seaside town south of London where most of the live busking videos were filmed). He leans into the accent as he rhymes. And yes, his illness was because of undiagnosed/misdiagnosed Lyme disease. If it goes untreated for too long it can trigger autoimmune issues. I really liked the beat at the start of this song but as it progressed I just lost interest as the beat didn't carry me. It's too jarring! I understand that Ren makes a musical choice for a reason, and this was very much him telling his story, but it's a, listen once and leave it at that for me when the beat isn't great. Some of his inflections can also be a bit off-putting. For me, I love when he brings the whole package, which is a beat and lyrics. yep seems strange lately... seemed to be before he just dissed ren cos it wasn't what he classed as rap and hip hop. At least then he had his opinion and was strong with it. recently it just seems he has realised his views on ren reactions are probably some of his highest and now he is backtracking to appease

yeah, thats exactly what it seems like....
To give KSO the benefit of doubt, there are Ren songs I liked better on the second listen. I think because his music is so different, sometimes it takes you a bit to get acclimated to such a unique style.
Also having lyrics may have helped him with understanding the song more.
@@IronRaspberry i understand ur point but if he's such the expert he claims to be , even if its not for him ,he should be able to recognise the creative talent / ability it takes to even write and put it together .... thats not what he does....at times kso is mocking it...
I genuinely can't hear any Welsh in his accent when I have heard him talking in interviews just sounds like your average English accent to me
It's a canned beat. I think Bieber used it in one of his songs.
Defo getting more this time dude - I shot the sheriff changed your view.
Maybe, up to you, stop thinking of hip hop rules - they change. ATL and and NWA changed the game late 89 as one example.
holy crap you dont know his story? wt fudge? he was given the wrong meds for 7-10 years, which almost killed him and where all his music comes from!
Hopefully you learn from this reaction that you need to listen more and pass judgement later because you really missed the whole story when you listened to it the first time - you should have known about his Lyme when you listened to SickBoi where he told you all about it but you were yapping away about wanting to know more about him and totally missed it
I really liked the beat at the start of this song but as it progressed I just lost interest as the beat didn't carry me. Ren loses me when the beat and his inflections all become a bit garbled.
If you don't like Ren, then stop using him as click bait and spare all of us from your trash video.
