Olsh Loop, I hope your comment gets thousands of likes. As a Black American, I often see a bitterness between us and Black Africans and vice versa. For instance how most Black Americans are unable to know their roots is frowned upon by Black Africans who know their lineage. I mean, we would know it and honor it if it wasn't stolen from us. Thanks so much for writing this unifying message. 💚
There are black Americans named Ashanti, Imani, etc. During the black power movement in the 1970's, many gave their children Afrocentric names. You can give your child any first name you want. It doesn't necessarily indicate heritage.
Just hearing how passionate this woman is about discovering their past and culture is so heart warming. All she wants is for people to know where they came from and their rich history and culture. It would be amazing if they made something like this for Native American people too!!
There is!!! I'm always looking into all my native peoples history, both African and in the Americas! I searched up something about indigenous American DNA testing and they are trying to build up a base from existing indigenous tribes today. They still need help collecting the basis of their study but please look into it! 23andme and other testing that give you broad spectrums are not good for indigenous peoples to use bc they will keep you DNA. But I hope you can find out more about your ancestors and yourself. Also praying to your ancestors for guidance and help never hurt anyone! They are always with us in spirit and always listening!

Tears are coming to my eyes reading the comments from those that are still living in Africa or just came here to America recently. To say the words that "We in Africa love you - Africa will always love you" breaks my heart. Because they understand that we were kidnapped. We were stolen and abused against our will. It is the same feeling anyone would have if they found out one of their family members has gone missing - no where to be found. To understand that we were made to forget our heritage, culture and language. Thank you for the words and feelings. This video is appreciated.
@MANIDEEP REDDY The people called gypsies in Europe are said to be from India. Are they also having a good life because they are in Europe and not poor in India?
@MANIDEEP REDDY That's bad logic. You have to factor in the reasons they ended up in that foreign country. Proximity to gold doesn't equate to access to it under all conditions. Also, brainwashing of one's worth is a hell of a detriment.
@MANIDEEP REDDY In short, the point she's trying to make is there is something to be said of having an independent home to belong to unconditionally, one I believe the Romanis in Europe can also benefit from if they reconnect

Even though Black people in the Americas with our mixed ancestries may not have social ties to other continents, we have ethnic groups and cultures of our own. I may not know exactly where all of my ancestors came from (which is standard for anyone with a family that has migrated or immigrated) but I know where I came from. I feel incredibly proud to be from the Americas, to be from the US specifically and to be a part of a rich legacy. Black Americans have such a huge global influence for such a small ethnic group. The whole world sings our music, dances our dances and looks up to our athletes.
I think this test and the explanation she gave is just a beautiful experience. Everyone should know where they come from, especially African-Americans (from the U.S.) and Hispanics. We see our past with such a hazy blur full of negativity (age of "discovery", colonization, imperialism...).To actually see where our ancestors came from and who they really were would help people figure out who they are as an individual.
Marcus Garvey wasn't a supporter of Pan-Africanism and like Malcolm X and Martin Luther King he knew blacks as we are called are not from Africa but Aborigines/Natives stripped majorly of our values , history and land. He did support a free state/economy like Liberia

White people really take it for granted that we know our ancestry and/or can easily research it. I know where my ancestors lived, what languages they spoke, what religions they followed, etc. I have the privilege of speaking English when I AM English. I know a lot of white Americans scoff at the notion that knowing where you come from is important, considering themselves culturally American and nothing more, but the history of your people influences you today in ways you aren't even aware of. People often try to downplay the transatlantic slave trade by falsely comparing it to slavery that's occurred in the Middle East and ancient Rome, as if it's something every culture has dabbled in at one time or another, but most slavery systems didn't involve forced assimilation via bans on languages, religions, cultural practices, family groups, etc. Slaves in ancient Rome could continue speaking their native languages and worshiping their own gods, and their children weren't automatically slaves. The transatlantic slave trade was built upon intentional cultural genocide. Humans are easier to subdue when you strip them of their identities. It's one of the most tragic things that can happen to a people and it's shameful that the US never made reparations. We can never give back what we stole from the descendants of slaves but as a society we won't even admit the gravity of what we stole.
Laith the Arab slave trade was infinitely more brutal than the trans Atlantic slave trade and your wrong about forced assimilation. All cultures practiced slavery at one point, there was slavery going on in Africa thousands of years before the Europeans showed up. Try again

It hurts to only be to identify as “Black” don’t get me wrong but imagine if we african americans knew our true background. Seeing how proud people are to rep their flags I always feel i’m on the outside
Tribalism has its own problems too. In countries where there are mostly black people, tribalism can often replace racism (Thanks Colonialism). Like in a lot of African countries, identifying as black means nothing, 'cause we're all black, but we're not all the same tribe, so that takes precedence.

Dox Holiday lies lies and more lies and most of the slaves came from Israel and were Hebrews who fled to Africa the Roman emperors Pompey and his father burned down Jerusalem and the Africans didn’t like the Hebrews!!!! The prince of Egypt shows Egyptians and Hebrews living together but are different people
Dox Holiday By your reasoning the Irish were also oppressed by their *own people* the English, for centuries right? Since when is capturing and holding in bondage your rival ethnic group who have nothing to do with you *your own people*? Africans throughout the continent were never “one people” as you posit. It was Europeans who stripped Africans of diverse ethnic origins (e.g., Fang, Ewe, Hausa etc) and lumped them into *one* for social, economic and political gain. The European enslavers deliberately grouped together diverse ethnic groups so that they could not communicate with each other and cause an uprising. Also, the same applies to the indigenous people throughout the Americas, they were falsely lumped together as *one* and the false label *Indian* was imposed on them. But we all know that the “In group” has to use DECEPTION among other strategies about the “out group”.

@@emmanuelabiola1871 I know. Thats why i said even if many slaves didn't originate from Kenya, they should feel free to call Kenya home. I already knew the backstory to the Atlantic slave trade which East Africa wasn't involved in. Knowing your ancestral history is empowering in my opinion. I didn't know they had this DNA test, that's really awesome that folks can do this and learn their family's histories beyond the nightmare of slavery. I'd love one like this for Native American tribes too. Native children were stolen from their tribes to be civilized and christianized. I knew my dad's family is native but my dna test showed I am also native on my mom's side and I'd love to know more.
The sad reality is that test like this are misleading. They look at autosomal DNA and can only tell you about the DNA you carry. That means they do not look at all of your ancestors. And if they look at Y chromosomes they can only tell you about your father's father's father's father's father so many generations back and the same goes for looking at mitochondrial DNA only being able to show you your mother's mother's mother so many generations back. Given the forced migration of African people on the African continent to West Africa's Coast during the days of the transatlantic slave trade, it's virtually impossible to trace any modern-day African-American to one African tribe. And because modern-day Africa is a byproduct of its Colonial past, African Americans could not lay claim today in being descendants of any modern-day countries even if they wanted to. There was no country called Ghana or Nigeria or Senegal or the Democratic Republic of Congo or any other modern African nation when our ancestors lived on that continent
@ that's real Africans took war prisoners and enslaved them. Arabs also enslaved Africans. The transatlantic slave trade was pretty lucrative for crooked African slave traders.
Africans enslaving each other was not the same as chattel slavery in the US. It wasn’t race-based, it was possible to buy your freedom, slaves could marry into a family etc
It really is a beautiful thing for descendants of enslaved Black Americans to trace their roots. I was recently at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and remember having the same feeling I got after watching this video. As a side note, it's nice how you mentioned that you hope for a Native American DNA test in the near future without commandeering the video. You got your point across without being disrespectful to Black people by hijacking the point of this video like many commenters here did. So many people are putting the onus on Black people to fix every race's/culture's problems. Whenever Black people get something or do something, some foolish POC is like "But why don't you help us instead?" like Black people don't already help other POC to get no help in return. I wish more of those people would be like you who want to work with Black people and not have Black people work for you. 💛
I neither liked or disliked, but I can perfectly understand someone becoming completely fed up with yet another video where the topic of slavery is brought up and leveraged against 'white people' and disliking it because of that. That's what happens when you constantly harp on something year after year, decade after decade, generation after generation, century after century... and methodically craft a narrative aimed at making people who've never owned slaves feel guilty about something that happened in the distant past. Not a single person in America has ever owned a slave. None of their parents or grandparents owned slaves. Yet it's one of the most talked about subjects in 2019 because it's used to leverage guilt, and put an entire race of people on the defensive, people are getting fed up with being brow beaten and dehumanized for something they took no part in. White people didn't "steal" blacks, their own people enslaved them and sold them to merchants. They were put on ships usually owned by Jews or Arabs. They were taken to different parts of the world, in fact the fewest amount of slaves were taken to America, where less than 2% of white Americans owned slaves. 89 years after the formation of the country white Americans ended slavery, then joined the British in demolishing the slave trade around the world. Black Africans on the other hand are enslaving other blacks to this day. Try making a video where slavery isn't used to put false guilt on an entire race of people and there won't be thousands of people disliking it. Because it's only going to get worse.

There are black Americans named Ashanti, Imani, etc. During the black power movement in the 1970's, many gave their children Afrocentric names. You can give your child any first name you want. It doesn't necessarily indicate heritage.

@MANIDEEP REDDY That's bad logic. You have to factor in the reasons they ended up in that foreign country. Proximity to gold doesn't equate to access to it under all conditions. Also, brainwashing of one's worth is a hell of a detriment.

Correct, African American! Not Blacks, because we know!

I wish I could like this a million times
Laith slaves in the Roman Empire COULD NOT appreciate their own cultures and speak their own languages. Try again.
Laith the Arab slave trade was infinitely more brutal than the trans Atlantic slave trade and your wrong about forced assimilation. All cultures practiced slavery at one point, there was slavery going on in Africa thousands of years before the Europeans showed up. Try again
I’m white, and adopted. So keep in mind thus doesn’t apple to all white people.

Black is just a general term of all the African Diaspora and due to the Europeans not caring nor keeping proper records and many Europeans destroying their familial ways of knowledge by slavery
Hmm, Have you read the Holy Bible?

Who stole something? Those people were enslaved by their own people and sold to merchants who then transported them to various places where they were purchased. Try speaking the truth for a change.
hrikw clearly you’ve never heard of melanin shots they’ve been doing it for centuries

@100k Subs Without Any Videos? from what i'd gathered it seemed like when africans enslaved others it was more like indentured servitude
Not sure who disliked this video, but that says a lot about you
I neither liked or disliked, but I can perfectly understand someone becoming completely fed up with yet another video where the topic of slavery is brought up and leveraged against 'white people' and disliking it because of that.
