1:24 reminds me of a lot of scenes from fire force
(for the initiated, it's a fantasy-steampunk (or is it nuclearpunk since they use nuclear?) manga in which they worship the sun god, but they also use nuclear plant to power their entire city, so what they worship is kinda accurate)
A very simple story which is kinda refreshing. We've been getting a lot of heavy hitters toward the setting lore of overwatch, so this is nice. She seems like she'll be good. 👍

Part of me likes to believe that whatever happened with the machine actually wasn’t her fault and instead was the result of whatever experiment Sigma was doing with gravity, causing some space shenagains that caused a rush of sunlight energy to flood into the momentary vacuum caused by his black hole gravity experiment, meaning that when activated, Ilari was filled with a huge burst of sun energy, could help interconnect the world and characters in a fancy way
overwatch do this now
its a bit of a stretch but i’m all for it, would love to see Illari have a reason to oppose talon and join overwatch
I think you’ve thought this more out and throughly then the overwatch story team themselves 😂 but in all seriousness that sounds like an amazing idea for them to integrate, stuff like this makes me realize how great overwatch’s story’s can be. just need the right medium and handing, a animated tv show is long overdue atp.
This doesnt seem like it would fit in with the timeline? I think Sigma was only relatively recently in Talon but Illari's incident would've occured much earlier.
Even if it did match up close enough for it not to be considered a retcon it would still be pretty scientifically implausible, i mean overwatch is sci-fi so that shouldn't matter but the explanation you gave is like directly incompatible with our modern understanding of physics. Light cannot be sped up by a blackhole and since it has no mass it cannot be pulled into a blackhole(it bends due to spacetime curvature, not due to the effects of gravity.
A better explanation would be that Sigma was in his lab in orbit over the earth, suddenly his experiment goes wrong and an actual blackhole formed in his lab for a worrying amount of time which literally BENT the space around him, because of his relative position to the Sun and Illari's homebase the warping of spacetime focused an incredible amount of photons over a relatively small area(Her whole village/City would've shut down their solar panels automatically since they can sense the amount that incoming and detect if it exceeds the limit that the battery's can handle), but since Illari's ceremony CANNOT be interrupted otherwise she'll end up dead/comatose/paralyzed/mutilated/incinirated/whatever, so there is no manual or automatic shut-down of the panels which power the machine, afterall more power would be better in this case(they didnt know anything like this could've happened).
@@infochan6776 actually, not to be "that guy" in reference to a world where science is treated more or less like a soft magic system, but in our own reality gravity is simply an illusory force that is the result of the curvature of spacetime... Gravity and spacetime are not separate entities, at least as far as we know. Therefore yes gravity can bend light and yes light does fall into black holes. Not that your overall conclusion is wrong ofc, but i thought it was a bit odd to be pointing out modern scientific facts and then say something humanity has known to be factually incorrect for nearly a century now.
Illari: *straight up murdered her whole race*
Also illari: “… That doesn’t matter now”
I mean, theyre already dead, sooooo....
Does it reeeeaally matter now?
She didn't kill everyone, just the other Inti warriors in their headquarters who were gathered to watch her ceremony. The rest of her people lived in the city a little ways away (you can even see it in the scenes with her in the headquarter ruins). But even if she didn't kill her entire people, now she has to protect people who probably hate her for getting their family members who were other Inti warriors killed. Also you can see the city behind her in the very last scene.
@@hootax8980 Just to clarify, inti is sun in quechua, so the name "inti warriors" is basically the children of the sun or whatever she said
@@hootax8980 I don't think they're the same, actually. You can see that Illari is using the solar energy stuff before she even gets her Solar Threading installed, which implies that the Inti are distinct from other people and have some kind of innate ability to capture that energy. Further, you can also see the wreckage of the place she destroyed from Runasapi, which also implies that it was another sister city a little ways off, instead of being part of Runasapi as a whole.
Others: "Still, it had to have been traumatic."
Illari: "No, Not to me it wasn't."

While playing her I was thinking how she’s boring and had no personality. But then I listened to her voice lines and thought maybe there’s a reason why she sounds monotonous, or very serious about everything. This origin story confirms that. ☺️
I wish she wasn't so abrasive and had more than her guilt to contend with; something so nuclear as the power she holds would definitely feel much more of a constant weight on her shoulders than just the one time she lost control of it.

I hope that she at some point of the story forgives herself for it. She seems to be a character that loves helping others but the burden of her "mistake" prevents her of showing her kind, caring side and makes her look rather cold and serious. That´s a thing I love about the character design in Overwatch, that you can comprehend what those heroes must feel if you are/were in a similar situation.
The kind of power she has that could nuke a whole city through one "mistake" should also be an extra weight on her shoulders, and one that couldn't be so easily left behind after forgiving herself to boot.

I have to say that I prefer the way they teased Ramatrra, first the lore and then a couple days later the gameplay. For me at least that build up a lot more hype than the way these last two were released, since you already know what they are all about and can then speculate about their abilities.

@@neurozoned probably
They had us speculating about Ramattra since 2019 with the Storm Rising mission in that year's Archive's event. I do like when a character is added and we already have some context for them. OW plot/story/worldbuilding has a ton of loose ends, and the game itself doesn't allow for much character development, so I'm not sure how far we will get to know about Illari. Especially considering her entire community is... dead, as we see in this Origin Story. I do wonder what else we can learn about her.

Illari is my favorite support hero, and overall one of my favorite characters in Overwatch
Seems like the real messup was when they decided to make a custom of gathering all their members around a device with the potential to go off like a big bomb.
No matter the amount of security to prevent someone from messing with it, the ultimate defense against such disaster is to put such a device behind a lot of armor, and to never, ever, gather the entire group in one place (after all someone might just bring a bomb).
Okay, I have a couple of questions:
1. What kind of society is this that has never been mentioned in the lore? Is it some kind of hidden tribe?
2. What is this power of the Sun that warriors use? Another magic, like Shimada's dragons?
3. Why is Illari "the last"? It seems like her house is alright, and nothing prevents them from recreating the... um, the army of this tribe?
Maybe it was forbidden to make more for there was no way to know yet if it could happen again.
In the voice lines it hint that because of the explosion, some of the blueprints and knowledge of the technology to create more was destroyed. Her voiclines also hint that when she became a nuke, she accidentally wiped out everyone in the room. Including the other warriors. So now she is the last one.
re 3rd question: she blew up the chamber that gives the sun tech(?) along with everyone else.
Well if we're to take the story at face value the technology is *highly* efficient solar energy which... well, _harnesses the power of the Sun._ It's not Dyson Swarm/Sphere levels of efficient, but definitely enough to do justice for that phrase. So, no, not magic. Just really, *really* efficient solar power technology- probably (if not most likely) merged with biotechnology for those with high compatibility.
I guess that answers question 2.
For question 3: Again, if we're taking the story at face value, I'm guessing she had too much potential? Maybe her compatibility for the Solar tech was too high and the settings weren't prepped properly because they overlooked something crucial (I don't think it's her fault, because people with survival's guilt blame themselves a lot, it's pretty sad). Anyway, lack of info ---> not enough (proper) prep time, the right settings, or caution on the scientists/engineers/whoever's side----> Transformer gives her the power (Play the He-Man music!), but compatibility is over 100%! "Oopsie, we weren't ready for tha-" ---> Cue the Chernobyl-style explosion fueled by too much solar energy in her ignition and - Presto! Breakthrough in science! Oh, everyone's dead except her... *Whoops!* 😳 (By the way, she left *no evidence?* no charred bodies at all? Impressive, in a dark way - which is morbidly funny due to the context.)
Look on the bright side, newbie- everyone has a _certain_ weakness! Superman has Kryptonite, Batman has trauma, and you have Survival's Guilt! (You better hope the enemy can't defend themselves verbally as they do physically!)
Not sure for the first question though. It could be the Overwatch universe's version of Wakanda for all we know.
@@phoenixfyre365I also think it's remarkable that not a trace of a soul was left behind. She quite literally vaporized all of them. Impressive and also terrifying.
Thank you, Overwatch Story Team! This was lovely

This is a cool backstory, looking forward to seeing how her character develops.
That's a really cool origin story and spin on the chosen one trope. The Children of the Sun were essentially the private Overwatch of Peruvian Wakanda, she ended up being the chosen one, but her chosen one-ness burned everything, so now she's the last of her people and looking for answers as well as ways to make up for what she blames on herself.

See I agree with the first person and I know someone is gonna get the wrong idea over this but there are actually three characters who seem to be like that (excluding Widowmaker who has a reason) but Sojourn, Sym and now Illari are just poor. They are so... boring. Design is ok at most but their personality, story and character are about as interesting as a blank piece of paper is to someone that can't draw. This one is probably the worst there is since her tragedy is just laughable. If it wasn't for Bap, Sombra or Lucio, I'd assume they were just filling their minds with this idea that darker skin tone characters should be more serious to say the least. Doomfist is a bit like that too but I think the difference is just that he has that "evil leader" feel nailed so perfectly. I have nothing against making characters like this but seeing them do it so often not just here but other games too is just getting old. At least make more dark skin tone female characters that have some kind of personality before adding this serious stuff so much.

looooooool, no way peru ever had this kind of money to fund a weird army, academy and enhancement device.
Overwatch team never failed to deliver top tier content of stories.
Canon Illari: has the power of a god rivaling that of Sigma, blows up like a nuke.
In-Game Illari: haha funny fly and shoot. You need heal? I give turret only to me and place infront of enemy. FACE THE SUNRISE
OverWatch just retconed in and then reretcond out the most powerful group in the OverWatch universe
Out of all the new heroes from Sojourn to Illari, I think she's the most "Overwatch-feel like" hero in Overwatch 2. I love her healing powers, her character design, her color scheme and her personality.
I don't expect her backstory to be told in OW2, but it would be nice to see it.
This dosent feel like Overwatch. This feels like Dune or something.
Amazing origin story
You didn’t even watch the video 🤔
as a peruvian myself, i find this scaringly accurate
Won't be surprised if someone from the shadows sabotage the proceedings. Either Talon, Vishkar, or another shadow organization or are Illari's rival/nemesis.
We really need more fleshed out cinematic experiences from OW. You guys have top tier stories and animation, just give us more! OVERWATCH MOVIES PLEASE!
Be careful what you wish for, when we asked for that with tf2 we got Emesis Blue
Illari is every fantasy I’ve ever had about a hero come to life. I genuinely hope that one day she gets her own animated series where we get to see her struggles and triumphs. Also I want her to crush my head under her thighs, ok bye
I agree with the first half of your statement... and I especially agree with the second half
Both of you need to go outside more likely @@christurner6330
she's the most main character a main character can get
anime backstory fr
@@christurner6330 she destroyed her own clan because she was too powerful, so shonen of her
@@NKO_lindoexactly haha
Illari is also angram for Liar Liar which Blizzard is very frequently known for
Lore: one blast and all the people were dead.
Game: Take a nap while her gun charges to deal tickle dmg (headshot for less than Kiriko at much lower speed)
I like how her default voice line is “forgiveness is earned”, makes me think that she’s talking to herself and finally forgives herself for what happened when she was younger
