I can still remember the extraordinary crowd surge & roar behind the goal when Greaves headed that goal. I was 12 years old & nothing at a soccer match has ever come close since. Saw Jimmy play 3 times, twice for Spurs that season & once at Highbury for the Hammers - Jimmy scored in every game. The greatest player ever imo.

Spurs had some brilliant players with Greaves the greatest!
My dad was a massive Spurs Dan in those days since the early sixties, Dave MCkay was his hero, it was wonderful to see him back at Spurs, what a wonderful player he was.
That 70s pitch. Try as Spurs tried, we couldn't supercede Cgelsea's sandpit.

That Header from the Legendary Jimmy Greaves,from a fiercely hit Cross was a piece of Artistry!
I was at that game, and remember it because of the rare headed goal by Greavsie. A man next to me in the crowd pointed to his forehead and shouted out: "on 'is 'ead, on 'is 'ead" in disbelief when it went in!
Jennings the greatest of all keepers making brilliant saves look commonplace. Luv the Mullery Webster spat showing how a handshake solves all.

I was at this game aged 12 in the Park Lane behind the goal where Jimmy glanced in a rare header. Great times. COYLW!!!

Lovely video. Despite the win, I remember this was a troubled season for Spurs. The FA Cup defeat at Palace a couple of weeks later was the final straw for Billy Nick, who decided things needed shaking up, leading to Jimmy Greaves being transfered to West Ham shortly afterwards and Martin Peters going the other way. Martin Chivers was struggling up front (not helped by a serious knee injury season before) and getting a fair bit of stick from the crowd but luckily came good in the following season. Greaves retired in '72 and Peters became a key player for us so I guess Sir Bill was right on that one but a tough call at the time.
Interestingly Spurs won the FA Youth Cup that season with players like Perryman, Barry Daines and Graeme Souness. Souness would have been a great replacement for Dave Mackay but Nicholson thought otherwise.Instead we had players like Dennis Bond ,John Pratt, David Jenkins ,Terry Naylor coming in. Greaves wasn’t even 30 when he was shipped out to West Ham. Peters was good but there was only one Jimmy Greaves.
@@JAllenFBrown I may be wrong but I do remember reading that a very young and homesick Graeme Souness suddenly upped and cleared off back home, never to return... Pity, could have done with him in those late 70s teams.
@@JAllenFBrown Greaves out Souness moves on!? And it seemed like ,(to me)the more u see old Vids, the lack of decent defending& Organization and from my perspective,so much dependent on individual flashes of Brilliance,or individual moments of inept play or defending!

Obviously Derby brought the notorious Baseball Ground pitch with them! Rather this than the perfect sanitised pitch of grass & plastic we have now, it bores me.
Boy, has football gone backwards since these times. No diving, no shirt pulling, no arms all over each other. How did we end up with what we have now? Spectators not ripped off to attend (30p to stand at this match, I know because I was there).
Fantastic clip. Seen the final Greaves goal before but good to see all the highlights, the second Spurs goal was even better IMO. Brian Moore mentions the 0-5 defeat at Derby earlier that season which brought about the legendary "Flitwick" incident when the Spurs football special never made it back to London ;-). Always wondered what the fans chant for Greaves was now I know, just a straight "Jimmy" in the way Barca chant "Messi". Also right at the end with the announcer telling the kids to stay off the pitch, more like stay off the sand! Thanks for posting.

You don't get the mature football greats now & dropping down to lower divisions passing on their knowledge & learning the management game as now they are multi millionaires & cheek expect a testimonial match some do it for charity. Some like Harry Redknapp only do charity work for money & charge £1000s & they pay it such is the charity business.

Alan Hinton was the first player I can recall playing in non-black boots, saw him at Newcastle wearing white Hummel (i think) boots, went home and used tennis shoe whitener on mine ...got a right hiding for it

Dave Mackay a bit over weight?
He was always barrel chested, which gave him the impression of being overweight though you are probably right as he was coming to the end of a long and succesful career.
maybe Mackay was a little heavy - still a great player. Why did he never manage Spurs ???
