Charlie George was unlike other great footballers; ones which achieved far more, because he showed that there was another way of playing the game and his talents will always be a mystery to me; not because it was wasted; only because it should be accepted that the great Clough and Revi noticed how great he was and so they both knew he had something to put their reputations on the line for.
We've seen the greats and marvel at their brilliance, but George's talents can never be explained, so take a look at this and decide who is similar. Nobody is, because his touch defied his size and power.
Did England and Arsenal mishandle him? They had a true great and failed to use his abilities to achieve far more.
Arsenal never reached those heights again and until 1996; England failed to qualify for the World Cups in the 1970's, but this footage allows us all to see things which could easily have been lost forever.
You don't have to like any of his former clubs or the man himself to enjoy this, because true talent is so entertaining and the reason why the game of football was once described as being beautiful. I think Charlie George did much more to include England in that too!

In that 1975/76 season Charlie was consistently brilliant. I was lucky to be a season ticket holder at the Baseball Ground at that time. The football was thrilling and so entertaining.

Charlie was part of Arsenal’s double wining side, but not handled well by any club apart from Derby. I’m sure Clough even wanted to sign him, but a deal wasn’t made possible, so that shows how much he valued him and he knew a great player when he came across one.
It should be acknowledged that many players are more consistent and rely on certain attributes to prolong their careers, but they rarely do anything to stand out or to show how good they really were. Charlie did that, because his talent was unique and nobody else was just like him.
Charlton could hit a ball so hard, but Charlie used his special touch to direct it in ways which only a very great player could do and Platini comes into that idea. Michel was the best all round player I’ve ever seen and the difference with him and George is that he could hit a ball like Charlton; make it move towards targets which seemed so impossible to do, but his touch was so incredible to watch and none of the greats could compete with all he had to offer! He applied his personality into the way he performed, but importantly, he succeeded in offering the British game something which many others fail at and only because he was so clinical, but his touch a piece of magic out of nowhere.
We’ve seen Stan Bowles; Marsh; Best; Hoddle and even Rooney, but none could achieve all he did and he did compete at the top until at least 32; winning the double with Arsenal- plus Fairs Cup; one cap for England; playing for league champs Derby and scoring not far off of one goal in two, although a midfielder;capturing the attention of Clough and playing so brilliantly for Southampton in 1982.
Fans always will remember him, because he could entertain and scored so many great goals, but it was his special touch which stands him out and when he blasted the ball towards the goal, he was always able to make you wonder how he was able to find those angles so well. In my opinion, he’s up there with Platini on his touch, but tell me another person who could hit a ball so hard and with such a deft touch?
Hoddle was fantastic, but George scored more great goals than even him and was definitely right up there with Best and Marsh, but it’s the ability to do something which stands a player out for entertainment value and talent which makes them unique and there’s nobody else like him.
Hoddle will always be compared to the great Platini; Charlton to Rooney and a player like Shearer for how it could hit a ball, but nobody could be compared to George. Charlie didn’t just rely on power to score his goals; his touch was so delicate and I just don’t know how he did all he could do. That aspect must make him superior, because we all know how those other great players were able to perform so well!

Went to the Real Madrid game the week before my ninth birthday. A member of the junior Rams supporters club he became my favourite Rams player of that era, class no doubt. Just happened to play at the time England did not have a great side otherwise he would have got more caps along with Hector, Todd and Mcfarland. People unfortunately forget he was a major star with us after he left the Gunners.
