  • On May 1st, 2024, Seattle conducted another sweep near the Burke Gillman Trail and a grocery store on the corner of 8th and 43rd in Ballard.
We hear from several neighbors and their experiences with sweeps and the options they are given. We also hear from a neighbor that received a tiny home and how she purposely had to place herself in an encampment that was scheduled for a sweep.
The City of Seattle has persistently conducted 3-4 sweeps per week in King County since the beginning of the year, resulting in the displacement of hundreds of people and costing millions of dollars. Last year that number reached 38 million.

Glad Seattle is doing something about the homeless population. I was born and raised in Seattle but moved away many years ago. When I went back for a vacation 3 years ago I couldn’t believe how horrible it had become. The graffiti, the homeless people everywhere, the drug addicts. Not a place I would raise a kid.

Especially in Ballard, where you have folks rolling up in brand new electric BMWs, Mercedes, teslas, etc, stepping over homeless people or their tents to get to a niche baby gear store to buy a $1300 jogging stroller... Just seems like something is off there. I'm not saying it's anyone's responsibility to take care of anyone else but to not just ignore them, but to actively treat them like garbage? Society has become so completely detached, we've got to treat each other like humans and the fact that that has to be even said is a testament to how disturbingly bad it's gotten. Hopefully we can at least get back to mutual respect and simply returning a friendly "Hello" with a smile or, god forbid asking " how's it going?"... Hopefully people will start returning a smile with a smile!

With all the empty buildings,,houses open them up for some homeless,,I know the concern is drugs, and making crack houses ,,but if time is taken and check the back round of people,it can be done...women with children, first then seniors,,veterans,,it could work...and must be legal usa citizens...
