The merchandising joke was because Brooks actually asked Lucas for permission to do a parody (technically he didn't have to, parody is protected.) Lucas said yes, as long as he didn't do any merchandising that might cut into star wars merchandising.
I think it was cause he asked to use Star Wars Assets, like the inside of one of the space shuttles and other background sets more specifically.
Lucas also didn't want Spaceballs merch to be confused with Star Wars merch
Oh! Lucas also didn't want Brooks to use Han Solo's likeness/costume, so Brooks put Lonestar in the Indiana Jones costume.
@@burningfox4974the escape pod footage from the climax of the movie is actual, unused footage from the OT. Lucas _loved_ the idea, even the merchandising restrictions were as much the demands of the Schwartz toy company that handled Star Wars toys.
Don't forget Lucad letting Brooks use his special effects studio for the ship exterior models

ah yes, Spaceballs, Star Wars's "Father's Brother's Nephew's Cousin's Former Roommate".
The fans of star wars: "What does that make us?"
SpaceBalls: "absolutely nothing!"
😂
Your fathers brothers nephews cousin is just your cousin.
@@camrn_brian It could also just be you. Your father's brother is your uncle. Your uncle's nephew could be you, so like you said, your uncle's nephew's cousin could be your cousin. But your uncle's nephew could be your cousin as well. So your cousin's cousin could just be you.
"WE AINT FOUND SHIT!" I yelled once at my mom when she asked if I found her earrings. She was not happy lol.
Back before Tuvok suppressed his emotions.
and you still have your face? my mom would have slapped my face right off my skull!😂
@@Vsmit00 came here to comment this
They actually asked George Lucas for permission to make this and he even agreed to help them with the special effects through his company ILM, but his one condition was no merchandise so it couldn't confuse little kids.
That's why there are so many jokes about it.
He also didn't want Lonestar to look like Han Solo, so Mel Brooks made him look like Indiana Jones, since both are played by the same actor^^
There was more than one condition
@@luckyshot2574 And they're both Lucasfilm films, George Lucas created Indiana too
Ok, so they couldn't have Lone Starr dressed as Han Solo, so they just used the outfit of a different character Harrison Ford played: Indiana Jones
And that's why he is from Ford galaxy 😂
And that's why he is from Ford galaxy 😂
Also another George Lucas creation.
My favorite part was already John Hurt with another chest burster. His "Oh no, not again" line is a classic. 😂
"Half my personality was formed from Mel Brooks movies" Same here, bro😂
It's good to be the king!
For me, it’s a quarter Mel Brooks and a quarter ZAZ.
I am convinced that without Spaceballs, we wouldn't have Deadpool.
They just announced a sequel is in the works a week ago. I’m really hoping they call it spaceballs 2: the search for more money, or we need more money
How about Spaceballs 3 - the Search for Spaceballs 2! :D
@@PandezPandaSpaceballs 2: what happened to the money?
Make way for another sub-par "amazon prime" movie!
@@Otokichi786 I don't know. You ever noticed how it could be Paramount Plus?
@@PandezPanda Yes, "The Search for Spaceballs 2" was the proposed sequel that Mell Brooks discussed with Rick Moranis years ago.
To think the pizza costume was real pizza and they drip boiling cheese on for the effect. The actor had heat exhaustion on set. One of most difficult scenes in movie history
Poor Dom Delouise.
“When will then be now? SOON!” 37 Years ago today MEL BROOKS released his parody of all SCI fi movies into theaters, SPACEBALLS!!!!!!! One of the most hilarious movies ever made, lol!!!!! Was this a coincidence of you guys releasing this video on the day that Spaceballs premiered in theaters!?!?!? I think not!!! 😂
Wait really?
@@complex2live Yeah it was released June 24, 1987!!!
And guess what. We are getting a sequel
@@TheDiazDarkness I did hear about that, won’t be as good as the first one! That I know for sure, BUT I am intrigued!
Boom had the best straight face. Every time the others talk or blow their nose over a classic joke and he jokes about it, or pretend he doesn’t know that lightsaber mock scene is coming later.

But Yay!
24:19 Mel brooks made a deal with George Lucas to make Spaceballs all George Lucas lawyers said was as long as you don’t make merchandise do what ever you want. When the movie was finished filming Mel showed George and George laughed the hardest at the merchandising bit.
8:29 You know, for years as a kid, I had no idea that this was a parody brand as I'd never seen the real version. As such, I thought the "P" was a stylized "D", making the brand "Derri-air". In my version, Mel Gibson was up here snorting canned ass!
That's very funny!
I absolutely love that the chest burster alien was singing the Hello My Baby Hello my Honey song that Michigan J. Frog sung on the original Looney Tunes tv show so funny
If any of you guys are Star Trek fans, the guy who says "We ain't found shit!" is the actor who played Tuvok on Star Trek Voyager.

Now, watch Rick Moranis again in Ghostbusters. It's a fun series.
his best work was little shop of horrors
Strange Brew! Got to see where he started out.
Who brought the dog? 😆
This is definitely the best Mel Brooks satire movie in my book. It’s really hilarious from beginning to end. May the Schwartz be with us all.
I mean this one's good but it's no Blazing Saddles or Young Frankenstein or The Producers
i mean this is good but blazing saddles and robin hood men in tights are better imo mel brooks is awesome
@@legendaccount3247Blazing Saddles isnt really a parody in the same way this and Men In Tights are, moreso just a comedy.
SPACEBALLS !!! One of the top funniest movies Mel Brooks created, so lets go to Ludicrous Speed with fun facts:
- This was originally going to be called “The Planet Moron”
- The studio wanted Tom Hanks or Tom Cruise to play the role of Lone Starr which Bill Pullman ironically never saw Star Wars before making the movie
- While the movie made a huge joke about merchandising it funny when Mel Brooks ask if he can do a parody of Star Wars to George Lucas he said yes but that they can’t do any merchandising
- The man making of those noises is Michael Winslow famous for the Police Academy franchise & is just one of my favorite scenes in the movie
- The black man with the comb (first funny scene) who said “We ain’t found Shit !” Is Tim Russ who would later play Tuvok in Star Trek plus Rob Paulsen was in that scene as well
- At the ending was an Alien parody scene of the chest bursting which funny is that they got John Hurt to be in this scene because he was in the original movie which is why he says “Not Again”
- There was a animated series which was not that good
We don't talk about the animated series...
But, REALLY?! ROB PAULSEN?!
Wait, there was a series?
@@stephanniemorinYes I heard it from himself mentioning it in a video
One of my all time favourite movies!
Rick Moranis ended up costing Mel Brooks "a lot" of money, since the crew (including Brooks) couldn't help but laugh during his scenes, most notably when he first appears on screen and has breathing problems.
George Lucas lended the services of his company ILM to shoot some scenes. The escape pod dropping out was actually a (once) deleted scene from A New Hope. He agreed to let Brooks make the movie on the condition that he couldn't make merchandise, hence the running gag throughout the movie. And he didn't want Lone Star to dress like Han, so Brooks chose to dress him like Indiana Jones.
Rick Moranis improvised the entire scene where he plays with his dolls, he was sick and had a fever that day and still came up with one of the best scenes.
The original title was Planet Moron.
Brooks had a bad reaction to the Yogurt make up and got a bad rash around his eyes.
The voice Dark Helmet has when his... dark helmet visor is down is inspired by David Prose, the physical actor for Darth Vader in the original trilogy, and how he sounded with the mask on set. You can find footage of it.
Just a little bit of extra trivia, the shot of the escape pod leaving is actually the very first shot that was completed by ILM but George had rejected it and then they had redone it. It's the redo that is in Star Wars.
19:58 This is hands-down my favorite gag in all of cinema. I memorized the back-and-forth they have, and whenever it comes up everyone is laughing. I adore this movie, but this bit? Nothing else comes close, IMO.
YALL WATCHING A GEMMMM
25:53 actual film has effectively INFINITE resolution, it captures actual light on what is effectively a 1 to 1 scale, your only limitation at that point is what to display it on.
Old box TVs couldn't display the entire resolution of film, that was why _theaters_ gained their reputation as the go to for watching movies, a large canvas to project light onto was the only way to truly see the full quality of a movie.
The advent of digital video and film upturned all this, it basically set back film quality by several decades, and it's been playing gradual catch-up to what film could already do ever since.
The old movie theater experience your grandparents and great-grandparents knew had several times the visual quality of almost every TV or screen you've ever had.
Mel said recently he wants to work on a sequel finally. I can't wait! I imagine it will be based on the new Star Wars movies.
It was announced a week or so ago that him and Josh Gad are working on the sequel.
Honestly this such a good dumb movie to just laugh at and enjoy
They never made any of the merch. The deal that Brooks made with George Lucas was he could parody the film, but he couldn't sell any merch for it.
LAME
Yeah boom. I had the same reaction when I heard
who's Mel Brooks
In 1986, the year before "Spaceballs" was released, was the cult classic and infamous flop "Howard the Duck", the first ever live-action movie based on a Marvel property (thus making it the first movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe). "Howard" was such a disastrous flop that allegedly Mel Brooks announced "Anyone who was in 'Howard' can be in 'Spaceballs'," in an attempt to save the actors' careers.
It’s THE Star Wars parody. Also fun fact: there was a very early draft of the movie where the entire running time was just the “star destroyer” flying by.
27:57 funny story it’s just recently been announced that Josh Gad A.K.A. Olaf, and Mel Brooks are working on a sequel
Fun facts, Lucas actually had his special effects team help with the movie, the escape pod launch scenes where actually unused shots from A New Hope,
My 2 little favorite bits that often get overlooked:
1. When asking, "How many assholes we got on this ship?" The only one who doesn't stand is the guy who replaced the guy who got Schwartz'd in the balls.
2. When the camera pushes in to Dark Helmet in the jammed radar scene and hits him, he subtly pushes Col. Sandurz out of the way of the camera.
Fun fact: it's literally just been announced this past week that Mel Brooks and Josh Gad are working on Spaceballs 2 together. The Search For More Money is now preparing for production!!
Rick Moranis was in the horror/comedy musical Little shop of Horrors the year before Spaceballs. He was also in Ghostbusters 1&2, Honey I Shrunk the Kids Honey I Blew Up the Kid, Honey We Shrunk Ourselves, and Little Giants with Ed O'Neal from the Married with Children series & Modern Family.
"good luck going around that ship," but they fly in 3 dimensions.. just go up, ruff
I had this on VHS and I had fast forwarded over the long ship shot so many times that you couldn't watch it on normal speed anymore, the tape was actually damaged. 😄
LET`S GOOOOO!!!!!!!!! I NEVER THOUGH YOU WOULD ACTUALLY WATCH THIS MOVIE!
"combing" the desert always makes me laugh we aint seen shit.
this is the type of movie you will never get tired of and can rematch it as many times as possible and you still lugh your ass off xD
"We ain't found shit!" - Tuvok.
I love the commitment to the first visual joke of the movie. The Spaceball 1 model used for that shot was 17’ long. The shot goes for a little less than 2 minutes (considerably longer than the Star Destroyer flyover at the beginning of Episode IV, but fairly shorter than the intro of _Alien)._
My favorite Mel Brooks movie is Young Frankenstein (1974) starring Gene Wilder, roughly based on Mary Shelley's novel as well as several classic Frankenstein movies.
This is required viewing after watching most of the 80's scifi :) Please continue on with more Mel Brooks!
Okay, Ruff not knowing anything about Mel Brooks is a grave sin. REMEDY THIS!!!!
I absolutely love every second of this movie! So many quotes and parodies in one movie it's ridiculous!
Whoever did the miniature effects for the jam jar hitting the radar dish definitely had a fun time on that. Still looks great today 😎😎😎😎
Perfect timing for this reaction, since they announced that there's finally going to be a Spaceballs 2
My personal favorite Mel Brooks movie is “Robin Hood: Men in Tights”. Robin Hood is played by Cary Elwes and it’s amazing
Once upon a Time warp
"Just step to the left" 😂😂😂
You might recognize Mel Brooks' voice as well. He also voiced Bigweld in Robots.
They actually couldn't sell merchandise based on Spaceballs. It was part of a deal with Lucasfilm to settle a lawsuit against Mel Brooks. However after that deal did lapse several years ago and now merchandise is available. I have a model of the Eagle 5 Winnebago produced a few years ago.
I recommend watching robin Hood Men in Tights another mel brooks classic
This movie is one of those movies where its so bad its good imo and so many hilarious lines
"i see your schwartz is as big as mine" that killed me when i was younger
They just announced space balls 2 starting josh gad and produced by Mel brooks
John Candy died 4 days before I was born, and honestly I think that's where everything started going downhill for me.
The scene with the dolls happened because Rick Moranis was messing around between shots and Mel Brooks decided to film it.
If I’m recalling correctly The movie was allowed to use Lucas film’s / ILM’s sound effect library as long as they didn’t make any merchandise of the film. So they decided as a joke to have a bunch of fake merch in movie you can’t buy in real life
John Candy as barf and Uncle Buck are my two all-time favorite characters in anything
On the whole "Old movies on blu ray looks so good!" Thing is film as in the film reels a camera recorded onto was HD quality but the broadcasting equipment it was shown on after was never HD. Projectors were closer to that quality, but not quit.
So fast forward to modern Blu ray yes there is "clean up" to be done but if you have masters of the original film and it is kept well. Then you can HD release it.
I am horrifically simplifying it but basically old Movie Cameras did record such High quality.
This is genuinely my favorite movie of all time. A few months back my theater played this as part of like a "rewind" performance and I was like "Oh, we gotta go." All my friends also happen to love this movie and they were like "Fuck yeah we do!"
11:29 Whoa! Your editor did great with those cuts here! Haha! Love it!
Fun fact: During the merchandise scene if you look closely at the Spaceballs comic book you can see it's just a Transformers comic with Optimus Prime on the cover. Either this was an intended hint at the later scene we would get with the Spaceballs 1 ship or they just forgot to cover the transformers on it.
Considering all the intended nods to other movies and media it could be either.
Yeah, didn’t you know that Megamaid is Megatron’s sister?
I love how throughout the reaction Erik can't stop belly lauging, while Ruff is still busy trying to process all the chaos happening
that was gorge Lucas's one request from this film was no merchandising
At a comic con I bought a poster someone made of Dark Helmet that had the quote "Evil will always triumph because good is dumb."
The whole sequence will the dolls was improvised by Rick Moranis. Mel Brooks came up with the idea of something like it while filming and he gave the figures to Rick and told him to do whatever he wanted.
There was a cameo of the Millennium Falcon at the diner.
Also Mel Brooks has discussed on and off about the possibility of a sequel for years but never committed to doing one...until earlier this month! There was an announcement that Spaceballs 2 was in development by Amazon with Josh Gad set to star and help produce alongside Mel Brooks. So hopefully it will be decent (and hopefully it will indeed be called "The Search for more Money").
random science / cinema fact - in the 20th century film was made to capture moving images with silver halide crystals that would chemically react to light as it moved through the camera. digital cameras were created to be less expensive and were used more and more in the later half of the 20th century and early into the 21st century. it took a while but 4k is the closest we've ever come to replicating film quality resolution. that's why digital cinematography from the 80s, 90s to early 00s looks so pixelated. silver halide crystals were essentially 4k resolution and that's why old films shot on film are able to restored in 4k bluray with crystal clear clarity.
With all the Star Wars content, I also recommend the men who stare at goats and fanboys. Those are pretty funny!
Still one of the funnirst parodies ever made
you want a few great unsung movies:
El Dorado (John Wayne)
Wagons East (John Candy)
Oscar (Stalone)
The Villian (Arnald and Kirt Duglass)
“Or else what”?
“Or else pizza is gonna send out for you”.😂😂😂
I absolutely love this movie. My dad showed me this when I was like 9 and ever since then I watch it at least 15 times a year.
You guys haven't seen alien? You gotta watch it its a certified classic
Their was a couple of people in the movie that where In various Star Trek series like the Monitor lady playing different aliens in Star Trek Deep Space Nine, and the Guy who said "We ain't found Shit" was a main character in the Star Trek Voyager series.
"Its snowing on mt fuji" i saw that quick game grumps reference
The Spaceballs all look like Funko Pops. And one of my favorite quotes is, “Funny she doesn’t look Druish.” Also the spaceship at the beginning is the Metallica of spaceships
Spaceballs Sequel in the Works With Josh Gad Starring, Mel Brooks Producing. This was just announced a week ago too. Robin Hood: Men in Tights is my favorite Mel Brooks movie by far.
Funny enough both candy and moranis had cartoon shows staring them.
Rick with gravedale high and john with camp candy.
I often listen to the Spaceballs song because jokes aside, its a fucking cool song
I started chanting "SUCK" with you guys and and my girlfriend walked in and yelled "NO!" then left. Worth it.
Robin Hood: Men in Tights is a must watch as is Young Frankenstein.
Mel Brooks actually called George Lucas and got permission to use all the Star Wars references. As far as I know, this is the only other movie that has the Star Wars Crawl. Anyone who tried to use it gets sued by Lucas Film
Wooow. I've seen this movie a good number of times over the past few decades. I can't believe I never got the "Chapter Eleven" bankruptcy joke until now. I always thought it was just a play on the "Episodes 4-6" titles.
So you mentioned that film quality "wasn't as good back then", but that's actually a misconception. 35mm film stock has roughly the same clarity today as it did when it first came out. What made them look bad was that home releases were limited to things like VHS, or standard definition broadcast signals. In these modern releases, they simply go back and re-scan the original film reels, but instead of transferring it to something like VHS, transfer it to a digital file that can store a lot more quality.
A sequel with Josh Gad has just been announced, with Mel Brooks directing.
Tim Russ was in several shows and a few movies and was even one of the leads on Star Trek: Voyager for its 7 season run (170 episodes), and yet he finds it so funny that there are people who know him best for 4 words spoken in a Star Wars parody: "We ain't found sh*t!"
They weren't allowed to make Lone Star look like Han Solo... so they dressed him up like Han's other franchise INDIANA JONES!
The actor playing pizza the hut almost died from the heat.
Apparently they're making a Spaceballs 2 now.
I hope they name it "in search for money"
Lucas allowed Brooks to make the movie, but one condition was that they wouldn't sell any merchandise
Sorta Stupid watches the OG Alien movies would also be dope!
"Spaceballs": Mel Brooks' take on epic Space Opera movies.
And now every time you see a Tesla with a 'Plaid' emblem on it, you know where it came from.
He was so confident with “The Passion.”
Most prominent facts about the movie.)
Spaceballs got George Lucas's approval for it so long as two things didn't happen. 1. No merch for the movie (which explains the merchandising scene). and 2. that Han Solo's counterpart couldn't be dressed like him, so they made their "Solo" dress at Indiana Jones.
George Lucas likes the parody so good that he allowed them the same VFX Team and Set from Star Wars at the time.
“Half my personality is formed from Mel Brooks movies.”
Same!
25:52 Actual celluloid film was always in High Definition, it's the screens and data storage that couldn't keep up. After all, it still needed to look good when projected on a big-ass screen with what's basically a big-ass lamp and a magnifying glass.
Me: oh, cool, ruff wore a green shirt to add stars to the screen.
Also me: oh... My screen is just filthy...
Dark Helmet somewhat same ring as Emperor Ming from Flash Gordon.
