I was riding on my mother's hip...she was shorter than the corn. And all the years I took from her...just from being born. One of the greatest lyrics of all time.
Yep. Agree.
His lyrics knock me out. He’s really an incredible writer.
definitely Hanna..agreed!! He kills it.
I grew up hating country. Now that I'm older, stuff like this, which yes i know isn't "country country", is what I mostly listen to. But really, anything with good songwriting. He's such a great writer.
Hits me everytime
Did the folks who saw this ever recover? Masterful.
Right? I'm so jealous.
how the effin hell 15 people not like this?
OMFG. he's just damn good. Good... like ALL TIME GREAT
I haven't heard anything as good as this man in a long time
It’s been nearly 20 years for me. I had no idea I need his songs as badly as I did.
If his guitar solo at the end doesn't ROCK you to your core and make your insides tremble, then you need to see a doctor. Absolutlely brilliant.
So nice to be able to see his hands at work
My wife and I saw Jason and the unit in Peoria a couple months ago and ladies at work said, "we haven't heard of him, what kind of music does he play?" My wife said, I guess it is country. At the show as Sadler and Jason were scorch the guitar on this song and many others I repeatedly said to her, "do you still think this is country music?" He is an excellent slide and regular guitar player and I love the axe work in this song.
This is his Free Bird!
Agreed. Absolutely glorious solo.
Haunting and Chilling
Watched this guy as a young kid in DBT to smoke filled half empty Detroit shows to this....Brilliant.
I can’t stop watching this. And I never want to. Isbell is a National Treasure.
this is astounding. If this song doesn't make you cry you might not be human.
Song kills me every time I listen.
1:35.... those chords are just soaked in melancholy and bittersweet loveliness.
i have seen him in concert 8 times and that guitar solo will never ever get old. i cant wait to see him and the 400 unit again!!!
This is amazing, thank you Jason for making generational music while not being appreciated for it. This will stand the test of time.
This is my favorite song. My Mama was 18 when I was born. Jason is an amazing songwriter and singer, and the mournful slide solo pulls on every heart string. This is brilliance on every level.
This is the song that made me a Jason Isbell fan for life. Says more eloquently than I ever could've what I thought and always wanted to say to my mom before she passed. Heard it lots of times, and it still makes me cry.
I always thought Isbell was an incredible singer
/songwriter but it was at 4:19 in this live version that he went from being a singer/songwriter to a rock star to me.. I just love it when he walks away at 4:19 puts down the acoustic and walks back real slowly to the mic with the electric guitar and then goes fucking bannanas. He sealed the deal for me when he looks over to Amada Shires and Derry Deborja at 8:29 and signals to close the song then lifts the guitar up and brings it down real slow to close the song.
For me, this song has always been an answer to the misogyny buried in FreeBird and the idea that women are disposable; that a musician could have one in every town. I know I'm seeing too much in it, probably much more than he intended this song to mean. My grandmother was 14 when my 25, at the time, grandfather got her pregnant the first time in 1933. With no education and no prospects, she stayed pregnant or nursing a baby for 33 of her 50 years.
And him? All I can say is, Thank God for the TVA or they would've starved.
I have no memory of her, but I think about her when this song plays. It is beautiful and amazing and Jason is an amazing writer.
One of the tastiest song build-ups and guitar solo phrasing out there, and that driven slide tone is perfection.
Such a great performer...Jason's live stuff is even better than studio.
not a huge Jason Isbell fan from Denmark, but this is one of the most amazing melodies in music history....so so amazing!
People who are not Jason Isbell fans are just people that will eventually be converted.
Few bands are as honest and just fucking as good as this band
Not sure how anyone could dislike this Awesome performance.
Yeah yeah yeah Jason is fantastic. But that FIDDLE. Amanda is a national treasure.
One more time for Jason's solo
And cheers to the lighting guy
Hey, thanks for the shout out to the lighting guy. I always say lighting should be felt, not seen. It shouldn't upstage the talent on stage but work in conjunction. I thought the lighting on this song was a good example of that.
Condolences to Jimbo Hart....lost a family member yesterday and was sorely missed here in Dallas tonight
Jason Isbell is such a poetic, incredible lyricist and songwriter that I sometimes forget what a MUSICAL MONSTER he is. And then I hear that guitar solo and it's like, oh, yeah, right, he's an absolute god among men.
this is an amazing song ! John Prine said Jason is the new voice of Americana
He's a fucking superstar.
The bass line is fucking amazing!
Just Amazing Performance!!!
This has a wonderful Fleetwood Mac vibe. Jason is a treasure.
That outro is epic!
best song writer in a very long time
This is absolutely incredible. This song lyrically and musically is amazing. I just got a guitar and want to learn that solo. It reminds me of our multi generational family farm that was homesteaded in the beautiful state of Montana.
How can someone be such a brilliant songwriter and also so good on the guitar? His songs always move me. So do his guitar solos. Magnificent!
Saw him in February at The Count Basie Theater in Red Bank, NJ. I was totally BLOWN AWAY! Pure magic! Best songwriter alive today! The entire band kicks soo much ass!!!
Once upon a long, long time ago there was something called "Country Music". It was sung by men called Jonny, Wille, Hank and women like Loretta, Dolly and Crystal. Their words spoke into your life and tugged at you soul...it sounded alot like this.
He’s more of a rocker than country, really, but I know what you mean- the greats you list are/were all known to have hearts of lions, and Jason def. has the heart of a lion!
we need music like this today!
been to 4 of his concerts and last night in Grand Rapids was by far the best. he keeps getting better.
3 times I've seen him, what a talent.
2 for me....and hopefully many more to come. He's just so good.
So bummed; just found out today that he’s playing tonight in town and I have a gig already.
have shared this 4 times on FB, want my friends to love this song like I do!
Master piece ! This is is a MASTERPIECE
explain to me how 15 folks don't like this?
So there's the songs. Arguably the best living songwriter around. But the BAND. When I first saw them live a couple years ago, I knew it would be good. What I wasn't expecting was the unbelievable level of musicianship from every one of them. Two lead guitarists. Ridiculous rhythm section. Derry adding so much to the feel of every song. Amanda ofc--who I miss. But holy shit. Jason is legendary but The 400 Unit is fucking 🔥! If you're a fan but haven't been able to see them live--do it!
Watching again and REALLY missing moments like these
Great song and great production.
There's a magic made real when two artists are in love, that is a blessed unknowing to the "other lovers" of this vale of heartbreak...Serpensliber, be near~less I lose the rope~of all
2021 who is jamming
face.melted.
The song that got me listening to Jason. My favorite!!!
The best of the best...
This is just so effing good
A live audio of this entire show needs to available for download! Brilliant.
Anybody else seeing Johnny Cash and Neil Young in this guy?
I definitely hear Neil Young in this song.
They’d both be fans, would see/hear in 10 seconds that Jason’s the real deal
Just WOW!
jus 145K views only, really! ? well, 145K wise people in 2022
Probably not that many people...I've watched this at least 375 times.
It’s a crime they don’t have the camera on Amanda at 4:20.
It really is- wasn’t very good camera work, period, (but I don’t know what kind of limitations or ‘live show obstacles’ they had, either)
So beautifully filmed.
Wow
This is where Steve Earle lead me
Saw him at the Alabama Theater for the first time back in November..can't wait to see the new joint live.
All the feels.
Perfection
wow...
Just wow.....
