I do appreciate a dev whose so confident in the horror of their game they allow you to turn off jumpscares.
Real horror is made in atmosphere. If your game isn’t good without jump scares, you’re relying on cheap tricks to carry what’s most likely a sub-par game at best. Some of the best horror has little to no jump scares.
@@SEGSnewsdifferent types of people like different types of horror, and if you play a lot of horror games you may grow numb to things like jumpscares OR some atmospheric elements. i’m a big horror nerd and i love an atmospheric horror game, but unironically jumpscare-based horror scares me more because i don’t play it so i don’t have the tolerance for it.
in a similar vein, giving the option to remove jumpscares can be entirely because some people really cannot handle the feeling of being startled from a jumpscare so they will not even touch the game if its in there, even if they like horror. it’s not inherently cheap, it’s just that most jumpscares fall into the equivalent of “shaky png appears on screen”. don’t write off a classic horror trope simply because it gets used a lot. it clearly is a form of horror that scares a lot of people, and a good jumpscare can take just as much effort as good atmosphere.
@@frog_goblin It's definitely a mixed bag overall, I think for sure though that atmosphere is considerably more vital in a game being scary, and sometimes the atmosphere is what makes the jumpscares scary in the first place, I think i'm kind of on the opposite side with jumpscares doing little to nothing to me, unless they're built up well.

The use of peripheral anomalies, particularly strange or horrifying things that only appear on the border of your vision that either hide or will be further instigated when you attempt to look directly at it, is a concept I've always wanted to see properly realized in a horror game. I feel like this game has made excellent use of that trick which is rare.
i am terrified of seeing something horrifying out of the border of my vision
as somebody who gets hallucinations rather frequently that primarily manifest in my peripheral vision just like that, this was some GOOD horror to me. Felt really personal and accurate to my experience with those hallucinations. Makes me wonder if the dev has experience with something similar?
just like in real life...🥲
a horror game i played called In Sound Mind actually did it a lot, it had completely random peripheral hallucinations of this one character that was ever present in the game, he could just randomly show up to spook you but subtly
The whole game is "higher or lower number?" while random shit tries to scare you. Why do people accept shit like this as if it's a good game?
5:58 I loved the "What in the FNAF minigame--"

@@timoxtoni just have to ask since I saw you here! I noticed that the font used for ”FLATHEAD” is similar to, or maybe even the same, as the font that the band radiohead have used for their logos in the past, an example being on the cover for their record ”the bends”. As i thought about this I also realised that the guy sitting to the right in your game also resembles the dummy thats featured on that same album cover, the bends by radiohead. Both of them also look up which I thought was interesting and eerily similar. I’m wondering if you were inspired by radioheads imagery when coming up with the aestethics for this game?
Ikr it kinda feels like RE7 on LSD 😭😭
Hi! I’m a voice actor! Most of us LOVE to act, it’s why we do what we do. Yes, we’d like to be compensated for our time on projects that will actually come out. My biggest advice for starting game devs: make adding VA’s the last step before you release your game!
Most people don’t realize how much work adding voices is but it really takes your content to the next level of your game if you get good enough actors. That being said, the amount of times people add voices early and then the project never sees the light of day is TOO NUMEROUS TO COUNT. Don’t drag along VAs until your content is 99.9% finished.
Thanks!❤
To add to your point how much VA's can add, remember that Disco Elysium released without full voice acting at one point. the game went from an 8/10 to a 10/10 just by patching in full VA. Not just adding voice acting, but GOOD voice acting.
This is good advice!
thissss I have seen so many indie projects (visual novels for example) casting voice actors very early but then development stalls
@@hades_town exactly! It’s for this reason that a lot of VA now have trust issues, tbh. It might not seem like a big deal to fans on the outside, but that the time/effort we put into a project=money for us, and then when those projects come out, that’s another project on our resume/portfolios. When we put forth time and effort into a project, even if we are paid, and it doesn’t come out, we’re actually losing money.
I mean the first VA sucked lol, "uhh I uhh, read uhh all my lines uhh, real awkward uhh"
There is more to the game. You have to play multiple intervals of three round to get all the tapes/recordings/spectigrams to "beat" the game. Hope this helps! :)

Who gives a sht? This game is complete garbage.... It isn't engaging whatsoever... the whole game is literally just, one, single random number generator.
Wow, what riveting gameplay... -.-
You win nothing, and lose nothing... And there's nothing to be scared of either, because the "scary" stuff is on a strict timer... It's hardly even a game.

I love how this game functions as a metaphor for navigating bureaucracy. The way the game throws you in without a tutorial, the deeply unsettling user environment and oddly cheery musical cues capturing that idea of painting a veneer of cooperation on the part of Whatever you are dealing with. the monster inching closer operating on rules you don’t understand, ready to punish you for mistakes you don’t realize you’re making.

Hey! I'm one of those professional voice actors Mark was talking about! Yes, please get voice actors for cool games like this! It really helps bring indie games together!
For real
2:30 it's a minor thing, but it's super refreshing to see someone play a game and actually pay attention to it so much so that they verbally recap it. I imagine part of it has to do with coming back to making videos after over a year of primarily working on the movie, but eitherway it's just refreshing because it's not uncommon that even youtubers who I'd consider on the more attentive/competent side of things have their eyes completely glaze over meanwhile the game is basically screaming "HEY, TO NOT DIE, PRESS THE G KEY" only for them to die 5 seconds later confused.
3:15 "purely speculative" *_TODAY_*
You must be new to Markiplier because he always used to forget the function of the game, especially in games like cuphead
I get what you mean, Mark isn't JUST making content, so he actually pays SOME attention to what's going on-instead of just dying his hair crazy colors (lately) and screaming about literally everything lol
Mark does a good job usually but also kudos to the developer for making the instructions/lore interesting in a way that makes you want to read it/pay attention to it. Like if that information was just a text scrawl at the beginning, I think most people would have glossed over it. And the developer didn't put too much at once. Too much exposition can lead to glossing as well too often. So good job all around lol

Especially with how many "developers" think AI voices are an acceptable replacement. Very genuinely lovely of mark to make that a strong point!!
@skylarkblue1 why are you putting it in quotes they are still 100% developers
@@skylarkblue1
Keep in mind dev teams are like single people who are also very broke but wanna make games. So like you can't produce something from nothing and AI voices can probably work for smaller dialogue.
The problem isn't broke devs trying to make a game. It's AAA game corporations who wanna hoard money.
@@vvitch-mist20 Hi, I'm a solo developer with a budget of £0. You absolutely do not need to even look towards AI for making a game. AI voices are horrifically bad and lower the quality of the game overall. It WILL get noticed.
@@skylarkblue1some developers are broke as shit and it costs a fair bit of money to get a VA that doesn’t sound like a shitty anime protagonist
Yo! Professional VA here 😄 Thanks, Mark, for giving us a shout-out, and what he said is true! Most of us can and will do mixing or, at the very least, we KNOW someone who can do the mixing. I'd love to work with any developer on their game!
I just see this as an anti-add for gambling. The two monsters next to you represent people passing by who occasionally like to watch and the incoming monster behind is just the guy who tells you that the casino is closing. (Or you ran out of money and that last gamble determines whether you get more money to gamble more or nothing)
If gaming has taught me anything, if it isn't 100% it's 50/50

My favorite kind of horror is the silent and unsettling feeling you get when something is just about to happen but you don’t know when.
Ik, and ngl the message of “there’s jumpscares” helps make it scarier imo
That’s known as a thriller
That's my least favorite horror because I get violent when I'm scared
The VA conversation was fantastic. Reminds me of the comments Erica Lindbeck made when someone did an AI of her voice and she actively said she would have happily discussed doing some lines for the project if they had approached her. But the choice to favour AI first and not even ask her she found greatly disappointing, as it illustrated some people will take convenience over reaching out, and she felt like hearing her own voice in a project that devoid of her involvement felt... unnerving and haunting.
It's something we tend to overlook, or undervalue, especial if we look up to these VAs. Of all the games to hear this topic, was not expecting it here.
So cheers Mark.
Flathead and Silkbulb Test remind me of my nightmares and it gives me so much hope for horror as a genre
One thing I really appreciate about this game, is that it does a great job not making you know what is going on, and that is horrifying
Is it? honestly found this pretty boring. Nothing really happened, and there was just no real atmosphere. It was weird, but hardly scary.
@@RyanM92 there's a lot of things that are unknown in this game, which makes it scarier, and adds to the atmosphere, like what is the thing coming towards you? why is there a guy smiling on the monitors? and what is that human-like figure sitting next to you? the sound of the monster behind you slowly gets louder, and you can only see it with limited uses. there is an atmosphere, but i guess it doesn't appeal to everyone
@@RyanM92Everything is blurry if you stand far enough... To feel the atmosphere you really just have to stand closer. Experience it... idk how to describe it other than that
tbf, i think the devs did a great job, but just like the first reply, i know personally I and some others who watched this just really get much out of it. I think this is a game that's very much up to preference and that's okay!

I felt so seen too! I dream of being cast in a game and seeing it launch. 😊😊
@ezaf5989 except I have done paid work my biggest job being 2000 dollars so though I am not well established I am a professional with a professional set up. Being casted in an Indi game is a great way to show you can do veidogame work and character work and can help give you a in to that part of the industry. You should not talk if you don't know. A lot of beginner professionals get gigs in promo and freelance in things that isn't the field of voice acting they want.
Yeah and then later you'll make a twitlonger about how they didnt pay you
Why are half of the comments here so negative lol- I'm sure you'll do great, OP!
@ezaf5989 um dude in voice acting you definitely need to prove you can do work. It's called being able to market yourself. That's why you need professional demos and to do auditions. If you are not well established sure you can get lucky and score a good audition and be casted, but often you get those parts through slowly getting recognized via networking and self promotion. You literally have no idea how this industry works. A professional is some one who dose this for a job. True a more well established professional doesn't need to market as hard because they have the work to prove it for them aswell as people they have worked with to recommend them. You 100% need to show you are capable of doing certain type of voice acting for different things. How you record and read depends on the type of voice over work. Promo, telephone recording, audio books, educational , documentary, animation, video games, dubs, raido, announcements ect all require different skills. There are professionals on the lower end who need the stuff for there portfolio just like a photographer would or an on screen actor, dancer, or a writer. Creative jobs that take talent and skill like this requires proof beyond a good audition. Don't belittle professionals who are still in the phase of taking smaller jobs or jobs to build up there work experience. Again I personally have a professional set up and get paid to do my work. Doesn't mean I won't consider helping some one with a passion project that I like and want to support. So why don't you stop acting like you know what a professional is unless you yourself are in that profession.

Anyone else wanna see Mark do a play through of Still Wakes the Deep? I think he’d love that game, especially since he brought up the professional voice acting
there's a full ending once you get all the tapes by gambling enough
This reminds me of a program we used in school that was kinda like how this game plays, answer a question correctly among multiple choices to proceed but if you fail you have to complete two makeup answers in order to continue making “points”. It was very infuriating lmaoo
Theres a fun difference between what humans consider random and true statisitical random.
True random has points that cluster up and deviate all the time. Where as our human perception of random a lot more ordered than we'd like to think.
There are thousands upon thousands of hungry voice actors like myself who would gladly jump at the opportunity to work on a project like this. Like Mark said, there's an endless amount of VA's out there who would work for a nominal fee or maybe even free, and would happily help work on the audio effects needed to bring the project to life.
This is what distractible felt like when mark started introducing the random chance wins like the coin flip and the wheel, even if it was enjoyable it was also bullshit. Great game.
POV: Mark experiences a fraction of Bob's Wheel of Fate misfortunes
14:06 ....Darkiplier?
This is actually kinda fascinating and I'd live to see more.
